On a model for rotational tunneling with a $C_{6}$-space-time symetric analog

We analyze the simple model of a rigid rotor with $C_{3}$ symmetry and show that the use of parity simplifies considerably the calculation of its eigenvalues. We also consider a non-Hermitian space-time-symmetric counterpart that exhibits real eigenvalues and determine the exceptional point at which the antiunitary symmetry is broken.

On the straightforward perturbation theory in classical mechanics

We show that it is possible to extract useful information from the straightforward perturbation theory in classical mechanics. Although the secular terms make the perturbation series useless for large time, these expansions yield the perturbation corrections for the period exactly and may even be useful for sufficiently short time. We think that present analysis may be suitable for an advanced undergraduate course on classical mechanics.

Weakly (and not so weakly) bound states of a relativistic particle in one dimension

We present the first exact calculation of the energy of the bound state of a one dimensional Dirac massive particle in weak short-range arbitrary potentials, using perturbation theory to fourth order (the analogous result for two dimensional systems with confinement along one direction and arbitrary mass is also calculated to second order). We show that the non--perturbative extension obtained using Padé approximants can provide remarkably good approximations even for deep wells, in certain range of physical parameters. As an example, we discuss the case of two gaussian wells, comparing numerical and analytical results, predicted by our formulas.

On the application of the Lindstedt-Poincaré method to the Lotka-Volterra system

We apply the Lindstedt-Poincaré method to the Lotka-Volterra model and discuss alternative implementations of the approach. By means of an efficient systematic algorithm we obtain an unprecedented number of perturbation corrections for the two dynamical variables and the frequency. They enable us to estimate the radius of convergence of the perturbation series for the frequency as a function of the only model parameter. The method is suitable for the treatment of systems with any number of dynamical variables.

High order analysis of the limit cycle of the van der Pol oscillator

We have applied the Lindstedt-Poincaré method to study the limit cycle of the van der Pol oscillator, obtaining the numerical coefficients of the series for the period and for the amplitude to order $859$. Hermite-Padé approximants have been used to extract the location of the branch cut of the series with unprecendented accuracy ($100$ digits). Both series have then been resummed using an approach based on Padé approximants, where the exact asymptotic behaviors of the period and the amplitude are taken into account. Our results improve drastically all previous results obtained on this subject.

The harmonic oscillator in a space with a screw dislocation

We obtain the eigenvalues of the harmonic oscillator in a space with a screw dislocation. By means of a suitable nonorthogonal basis set with variational parameters we obtain sufficiently accurate eigenvalues for an arbitrary range of values of the space-deformation parameter. The energies exhibit a rich structure of avoided crossings in terms of such model parameter.

Exact sum rules for quantum billiards of arbitrary shape

We have derived explicit expressions for the sum rules of order one of the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian on two dimensional domains of arbitrary shape. Taking into account the leading asymptotic behavior of these eigenvalues, as given from Weyl's law, we show that it is possible to define sum rules that are finite, using different prescriptions. We provide the explicit expressions and test them on a number of non trivial examples, comparing the exact results with precise numerical results.

A quantum-mechanical anharmonic oscillator with a most interesting spectrum

We revisit the problem posed by an anharmonic oscillator with a potential given by a polynomial function of the coordinate of degree six that depends on a parameter $λ$. The ground state can be obtained exactly and its energy $E_{0}=1$ is independent of $λ$. This solution is valid only for $λ>0$ because the eigenfunction is not square integrable otherwise. Here we show that the perturbation series for the expectation values are Padé and Borel-Padé summable for $λ>0$. When $% λ<0$ the spectrum exhibits an infinite number of avoided crossings at each of which the eigenfunctions undergo dramatic changes in their spatial distribution that we analyze by means of the expectation values $\langle x^{2}\rangle $.

Weakly bound states in heterogeneous waveguides: a calculation to fourth order

We have extended a previous calculation of the energy of a weakly heterogeneous waveguide to fourth order in the density perturbation, deriving its general expression. For particular configurations where the second and third orders both vanish, we discover that the fourth order contribution lowers in general the energy of the state, below the threshold of the continuum. In these cases the waveguide possesses a localized state. We have applied our general formula to a solvable model with vanishing second and third orders reproducing the exact expression for the fourth order.

Perturbation theory for short-range weakly-attractive potentials in one dimension

We have obtained the perturbative expressions up to sixth order for the energy of the bound state in a one dimensional, arbitrarily weak, short range finite well, applying a method originally developed by Gat and Rosenstein Ref. [3]. The expressions up to fifth order reproduce the results already known in the literature, while the sixth order had not been calculated before. As an illustration of our formulas we have applied them to two exactly solvable problems and to a nontrivial problem.

On two perturbation series for short-range attractive potentials

We compare two alternative expansions for finite attractive wells. One of them is known from long ago and is given in terms of powers of the strength parameter. The other one is based on the solution of the equations of the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory in a basis set of functions of period $L$. The analysis of exactly solvable models shows that although the exact solution of the problem with periodic boundary conditions yields the correct result when $L\rightarrow \infty$ the coefficients of the series for this same problem blow up and fail to produce the correct asymptotic expansion.

Comment to "Thomson rings in a disk"

We have found that the minimum energy configuration of $N=395$ charges confined in a disk and interacting via the Coulomb potential, reported by Cerkaski et al. in Ref.~\cite{Cerkaski15} is not a global minimum of the total electrostatic energy. We have identified a large number of configurations with lower energy, where defects are present close to the center of the disk; thus, the formation of a hexagonal core and valence circular rings for the centered configurations, predicted by the model of Ref.~\cite{Cerkaski15}, is not supported by numerical evidence and the configurations obtained with this model cannot be used as a guide for the numerical calculations, as claimed by the authors.

Bound states in weakly deformed waveguides: numerical vs analytical results

We have studied the emergence of bound states in weakly deformed and/or heterogeneous waveguides, comparing the analytical predictions obtained using a recently developed perturbative method, with precise numerical results, for different configurations (a homogeneous asymmetric waveguide, a heterogenous asymmetric waveguide and a homogeneous broken-strip). In all the examples considered in this paper we have found excellent agreement between analytical and numerical results, thus providing a numerical verification of the analytical approach.

Weakly bound states in heterogeneous waveguides

We study the spectrum of the Helmholtz equation in a two-dimensional infinite waveguide, containing a weak heterogeneity localized at an internal point, and obeying Dirichlet boundary conditions at its border. We prove that, when the heterogeneity corresponds to a locally denser material, the lowest eigenvalue of the spectrum falls below the continuum threshold and a bound state appears, localized at the heterogeneity. We devise a rigorous perturbation scheme and derive the exact expression for the energy to third order in the heterogeneity.

High order eigenvalues for the Helmholtz equation in complicated non-tensor domains through Richardson Extrapolation of second order finite differences

We apply second order finite difference to calculate the lowest eigenvalues of the Helmholtz equation, for complicated non-tensor domains in the plane, using different grids which sample exactly the border of the domain. We show that the results obtained applying Richardson and Padé-Richardson extrapolation to a set of finite difference eigenvalues corresponding to different grids allows to obtain extremely precise values. When possible we have assessed the precision of our extrapolations comparing them with the highly precise results obtained using the method of particular solutions. Our empirical findings suggest an asymptotic nature of the FD series. In all the cases studied, we are able to report numerical results which are more precise than those available in the literature.

On the symmetry of three identical interacting particles in a one-dimensional box

We study a quantum-mechanical system of three particles in a one-dimensional box with two-particle harmonic interactions. The symmetry of the system is described by the point group $D_{3d}$. Group theory greatly facilitates the application of perturbation theory and the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method. A great advantage is that every irreducible representation can be treated separately. Group theory enables us to predict the connection between the states for the small box length and large box length regimes of the system. We discuss the crossings and avoided crossings of the energy levels as well as other interesting features of the spectrum of the system.

On an approximation to the Schrödinger equation with the Hellmann potential

We tried to determine the range of validity of a recently proposed modification of the Hellmann potential that leads to analytical eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. We discuss the difficulties that we found in the analysis of the main equations and results. We conclude that the eigenvalues reported by the authors do not exhibit the same order as those of the Hellmann potential thus leading to a different underlying physics. What is more: the spectrum of the modified model is qualitatively different from the one supported by the Hellmann potential.

Small-energy series for one-dimensional quantum-mechanical models with non-symmetric potentials

We generalize a recently proposed small-energy expansion for one-dimensional quantum-mechanical models. The original approach was devised to treat symmetric potentials and here we show how to extend it to non-symmetric ones. Present approach is based on matching the logarithmic derivatives for the left and right solutions to the Schrödinger equation at the origin (or any other point chosen conveniently) . As in the original method, each logarithmic derivative can be expanded in a small-energy series by straightforward perturbation theory. We test the new approach on four simple models, one of which is not exactly solvable. The perturbation expansion converges in all the illustrative examples so that one obtains the ground-state energy with an accuracy determined by the number of available perturbation corrections.
