Twisted compactification of N=2 5D SCFTs to three and two dimensions from F(4) gauged supergravity

We study supersymmetric $AdS_4\times Σ_2$ and $AdS_3\times Σ_3$ solutions in half-maximal gauged supergravity in six dimensions with $SU(2)_R\times SU(2)$ gauge group. The gauged supergravity is obtained by coupling three vector multiplets to the pure $F(4)$ gauged supergravity. The $SU(2)_R$ R-symmetry together with the $SO(3)\sim SU(2)$ symmetry of the vector multiplets are gauged. The resulting gauged supergravity admits supersymmetric $AdS_6$ critical points with $SO(4)\sim SU(2)\times SU(2)$ and $SO(3)\sim SU(2)_{\textrm{diag}}$ symmetries. The former corresponds to five-dimensional $N=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with $E_1\sim SU(2)$ symmetry. We find new classes of supersymmetric $AdS_4\times Σ_2$ and $AdS_3\times Σ_3$ solutions with $Σ_{2,3}$ being $S^{2,3}$ and $H^{2,3}$. These solutions describe SCFTs in three and two dimensions obtained from twisted compactifications of the aforementioned five-dimensional SCFTs with different numbers of unbroken supersymmetry and various types of global symmetries.

Holographic RG flows in N=4 SCFTs from half-maximal gauged supergravity

We study four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity coupled to six vector multiplets with semisimple gauge groups $SO(4)\times SO(4)$, $SO(3,1)\times SO(3,1)$ and $SO(4)\times SO(3,1)$. All of these gauge groups are dyonically embedded in the global symmetry group $SO(6,6)$ via its maximal subgroup $SO(3,3)\times SO(3,3)$. For $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ gauge group, there are four $N=4$ supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacua with $SO(4)\times SO(4)$, $SO(4)\times SO(3)$, $SO(3)\times SO(4)$ and $SO(3)\times SO(3)$ symmetries, respectively. These $AdS_4$ vacua correspond to $N=4$ SCFTs in three dimensions with $SO(4)$ R-symmetry and different flavor symmetries. We explicitly compute the full scalar mass spectra at all these vacua. Holographic RG flows interpolating between these conformal fixed points are also given. The solutions describe supersymmetric deformations of $N=4$ SCFTs by relevant operators of dimensions $Δ=1,2$. A number of these solutions can be found analytically although some of them can only be obtained numerically. These results provide a rich and novel class of $N=4$ fixed points in three-dimensional Chern-Simons-Matter theories and possible RG flows between them in the framework of $N=4$ gauged supergravity in four dimensions. Similar studies are carried out for non-compact gauge groups, but the $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ gauge group exhibits a much richer structure.

Supersymmetric solutions from matter-coupled 7D N=2 gauged supergravity

We study supersymmetric solutions within seven-dimensional $N=2$ gauged supergravity coupled to three vector multiplets in seven dimensions. The gauged supergravity contains six vector fields that gauge the $SO(4)\sim SO(3)\times SO(3)$ symmetry and admits two $N=2$ supersymmetric $AdS_7$ vacua with $SO(4)$ and $SO(3)_{\textrm{diag}}\subset SO(3)\times SO(3)$ symmetries. We consider solutions interpolating between two asymptotically locally $AdS_7$ geometries in the presence of a three-form field. For a particular value of the two $SO(3)$ gauge coupling constants, the $SO(3)_{\textrm{diag}}$ supersymmetric $AdS_7$ vacuum does not exist, but the solutions can be uplifted to eleven dimensions by a known reduction ansatz. We also study solutions of this type and their embedding in M-theory. We further extend these solutions to include the $SO(3)_{\textrm{diag}}$ gauge fields and argue that, in general, this generalization does not lead to supersymmetric solutions.

RG flows in 6D N=(1,0) SCFT from SO(4) half-maximal 7D gauged supergravity

We study $N=2$ seven-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to three vector multiplets with $SO(4)$ gauge group. The resulting gauged supergravity contains 10 scalars consisting of the dilaton and 9 vector multiplet scalars parametrized by $SO(3,3)/SO(3)\times SO(3)$ coset manifold. The maximally supersymmetric $AdS_7$ vacuum with unbroken $SO(4)$ symmetry is identified with a $(1,0)$ SCFT in six dimensions. We find one new supersymmetric $AdS_7$ critical point preserving $SO(3)_{\textrm{diag}}\subset SO(3)\times SO(3)\sim SO(4)$ and study a holographic RG flow interpolating between the $SO(4)$ and the new $SO(3)$ supersymmetric critical points. The RG flow is driven by a vacuum expectation value of a dimension-four operator and describes a deformation of the UV $(1,0)$ SCFT to another supersymmetric fixed point in the IR. In addition, a number of non-supersymmetric critical points are identified, and some of them are stable with all scalar masses above the BF bound. RG flows to non-conformal $N=(1,0)$ Super Yang-Mills with $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ and $SO(2)$ symmetries are also investigated. Some of these flows have physically acceptable IR singularities since the scalar potential is bounded above. These provide physical RG flows from $(1,0)$ SCFT to non-conformal field theories in six dimensions.

N=2 SO(4) 7D gauged supergravity with topological mass term from 11 dimensions

We construct a consistent reduction ansatz of eleven-dimensional supergravity to $N=2$ $SO(4)$ seven-dimensional gauged supergravity with topological mass term for the three-form field. The ansatz is obtained from a truncation of the $S^4$ reduction giving rise to the maximal $N=4$ $SO(5)$ gauged supergravity. Therefore, the consistency is guaranteed by the consistency of the $S^4$ reduction. Unlike the gauged supergravity without topological mass having a half-supersymmetric domain wall vacuum, the resulting 7D gauged supergravity theory admits a maximally supersymmetric $AdS_7$ critical point. This corresponds to $N=(1,0)$ superconformal field theory in six dimensions. We also study RG flows from this $N=(1,0)$ SCFT to non-conformal $N=(1,0)$ Super Yang-Mills theories in the seven-dimensional framework and use the reduction ansatz to uplift this RG flow to eleven dimensions.

Supersymmetric AdS$_2\times Σ_2$ solutions from tri-sasakian truncation

A class of $AdS_2\times Σ_2$, with $Σ_2$ being a two-sphere or a hyperbolic space, solutions within four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity coupled to three-vector multiplets with dyonic gauging is identified. The gauged supergravity has non-semisimple $SO(3)\ltimes (\mathbf{T}^3,\hat{\mathbf{T}}^3)$ gauge group and can be obtained from a consistent truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on a tri-sasakian manifold. The maximally symmetric vacua contain $AdS_4$ geometries with $N=1,3$ supersymmetry corresponding to $N=1$ and $N=3$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in three dimensions. We find supersymmetric solutions of the form $AdS_2\times Σ_2$ preserving two supercharges. These solutions describe twisted compactifications of the dual $N=1$ and $N=3$ SCFTs and should arise as near horizon geometries of dyonic black holes in asymptotically $AdS_4$ space-time. Most solutions have hyperbolic horizons although some of them exhibit spherical horizons. These provide a new class of $AdS_2\times Σ_2$ geometries with known M-theory origin.

Supersymmetric RG flows and Janus from type II orbifold compactification

We study holographic RG flow solutions within four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity obtained from type IIA and IIB string theories compactified on $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold with gauge, geometric and non-geometric fluxes. In type IIB non-geometric compactifications, the resulting gauged supergravity has $ISO(3)\times ISO(3)$ gauge group and admits an $N=4$ $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to an $N=4$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) in three dimensions. We study various supersymmetric RG flows from this $N=4$ SCFT to $N=4$ and $N=1$ non-conformal field theories in the IR. The flows preserving $N=4$ supersymmetry are driven by relevant operators of dimensions $Δ=1,2$ or alternatively by one of these relevant operators, dual to the dilaton, and irrelevant operators of dimensions $Δ=4$ while the $N=1$ flows in addition involve marginal deformations. Most of the flows can be obtained analytically. We also give examples of supersymmetric Janus solutions preserving $N=4$ and $N=1$ supersymmetries. These solutions should describe two-dimensional conformal defects within the dual $N=4$ SCFT. Geometric compactifications of type IIA theory give rise to $N=4$ gauged supergravity with $ISO(3)\ltimes U(1)^6$ gauge group. In this case, the resulting gauged supergravity admits an $N=1$ $AdS_4$ vacuum. We also numerically study possible $N=1$ RG flows to non-conformal field theories in this case.

Supersymmetric deformations of 3D SCFTs from tri-sasakian truncation

We holographically study supersymmetric deformations of $N=3$ and $N=1$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in three dimensions using four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity coupled to three-vector multiplets with non-semisimple $SO(3)\ltimes (\mathbf{T}^3,\hat{\mathbf{T}}^3)$ gauge group. This gauged supergravity can be obtained from a truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on a tri-sasakian manifold and admits both $N=1,3$ supersymmetric and stable non-supersymmetric $AdS_4$ critical points. We analyze the BPS equations for $SO(3)$ singlet scalars in details and study possible supersymmetric solutions. A number of RG flows to non-conformal field theories and half-supersymmetric domain walls are found, and many of them can be given analytically. Apart from these "flat" domain walls, we also consider $AdS_3$-sliced domain wall solutions describing two-dimensional conformal defects with $N=(1,0)$ supersymmetry within the dual $N=1$ field theory while this type of solutions does not exist in the $N=3$ case.

Supersymmetric $AdS_6$ vacua in six-dimensional $N=(1,1)$ gauged supergravity

We study fully supersymmetric $AdS_6$ vacua of half-maxi\-mal $N=(1,1)$ gauged supergravity in six space-time dimensions coupled to $n$ vector multiplets. We show that the existence of $AdS_6$ backgrounds requires that the gauge group is of the form $G'\times G"\subset SO(4,n)$ where $G'\subset SO(3,m)$ and $G"\subset SO(1,n-m)$. In the $AdS_6$ vacua this gauge group is broken to its maximal compact subgroup $SO(3)\times H'\times H"$ where $H'\subset SO(m)$ and $H"\subset SO(n-m)$. Furthermore, the $SO(3)$ factor is the R-symmetry gauged by three of the four graviphotons. We further show that the $AdS_6$ vacua have no moduli that preserve all supercharges. This is precisely in agreement with the absence of supersymmetric marginal deformations in holographically dual five-dimensional superconformal field theories.

Holographic RG flows in N=3 Chern-Simons-Matter theory from N=3 4D gauged supergravity

We study various supersymmetric RG flows of $N=3$ Chern-Simons-Matter theory in three dimensions by using four-dimensional $N=3$ gauged supergravity coupled to eight vector multiplets with $SO(3)\times SU(3)$ gauge group. The $AdS_4$ critical point preserving the full $SO(3)\times SU(3)$ provides a gravity dual of $N=3$ superconformal field theory with flavor symmetry $SU(3)$. We study the scalar potential and identify a new supersymmetric $AdS_4$ critical point preserving the full $N=3$ supersymmetry and unbroken $SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry. An analytic RG flow solution interpolating between $SO(3)\times SU(3)$ and $SO(3)\times U(1)$ critical points is explicitly given. We then investigate possible RG flows from these $AdS_4$ critical points to non-conformal field theories in the IR. All of the singularities appearing in the IR turn out to be physically acceptable. Furthermore, we look for supersymmetric solutions of the form $AdS_2\times Σ_2$ with $Σ_2$ being a two-sphere or a two-dimensional hyperbolic space and find a number of $AdS_2$ geometries preserving four supercharges with $SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)$ and $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ symmetries.

Supersymmetric Janus solutions in four-dimensional N=3 gauged supergravity

We construct supersymmetric Janus solutions using four-dimensional $N=3$ gauged supergravity with $SO(3)\times SU(3)$ gauge group. The $N=3$ supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacuum with unbroken $SO(3)\times SU(3)$, identified with the compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity on $AdS_4\times N^{010}$, provides a gravity dual of supersymmetric $N=3$ Chern-Simons-Matter theory in three dimensions with $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry. The Janus solutions accordingly describe supersymmetric conformal interfaces within this Chern-Simons-Matter theory via the AdS/CFT holography. We find two classes of Janus solutions preserving respectively $(2,1)$ and $(0,1)$ supersymmetry on the $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal defects. The solution with $(2,1)$ supersymmetry preserves $SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)\subset SO(3)\times SU(3)$ symmetry while the $(0,1)$ supersymmetric solution is invariant under a larger $SO(2)\times SU(2)\times SO(2)$ symmetry.

Gaugings of four-dimensional N=3 supergravity and AdS4/CFT3 holography

We study matter-coupled $N=3$ gauged supergravity in four dimensions with various semisimple gauge groups. When coupled to $n$ vector multiplets, the gauged supergravity contains $3+n$ vector fields and $3n$ complex scalars parametrized by $SU(3,n)/SU(3)\times SU(n)\times U(1)$ coset manifold. Semisimple gauge groups take the form of $G_0\times H\subset SO(3,n)\subset SU(3,n)$ with $H$ being a compact subgroup of $SO(n+3-\textrm{dim}(G_0))$. The $G_0$ groups considered in this paper are of the form $SO(3)$, $SO(3,1)$, $SO(2,2)$, $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ and $SO(2,1)\times SO(2,2)$. We find that $SO(3)\times SO(3)$, $SO(3,1)$ and $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ gauge groups admit a maximally supersymmetric $AdS_4$ critical point. The $SO(2,1)\times SO(2,2)$ gauge group admits a supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum while the remaining gauge groups admit both half-supersymmetric domain wall vacua and $AdS_4$ vacua with completely broken supersymmetry. For the $SO(3)\times SO(3)$ gauge group, there exists another supersymmetric $N=3$ $AdS_4$ critical point with $SO(3)_{\textrm{diag}}$ symmetry. We explicitly give a detailed study of various holographic RG flows between $AdS_4$ critical points, flows to non-conformal theories and supersymmetric domain walls in each gauge group. The results provide gravity duals of $N=3$ Chern-Simons-Matter theories in three dimensions.

3D supergravity from wrapped M5-branes

Through consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction, we construct 3D $\mathcal{N} =2$ gauged supergravities corresponding to twisted compactifications of M5-branes on a product of constant curvature Riemann surfaces, including Kähler-Einstein four-manifolds. We extend the reduction to fermionic supersymmetry variations in order to determine the 3D Killing spinor equations and classify all timelike supersymmetric solutions. As a by-product, we identify an infinite class of new supersymmetric warped $AdS_3$ (Gödel) and warped $d S_3$ solutions. Moreover, we show that the superpotential $T$ encodes the central charge and R symmetry of the dual $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ SCFTs in the large $N$ limit. We demonstrate that the R symmetry matches the canonical $U(1)$ isometry from existing classifications of supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions to 11D supergravity with $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ supersymmetry.

Non-semisimple gauging of a magical N=4 supergravity in three dimensions

We construct a new $N=4$ non-semisimple gauged supergravity in three dimensions with $E_{6(2)}/SU(6)\times SU(2)$ scalar manifold and $SO(4)\ltimes \mathbf{T}^6$ gauge group. Depending on the values of the gauge coupling constants, the theory admits both the maximally supersymmetric $AdS_3$ vacuum preserving $SO(4)$ gauge symmetry and half-supersymmetric domain walls with unbroken $SO(4)$ symmetry. We give all scalar masses at the supersymmetric $AdS_3$ critical point corresponding to an $N=(4,0)$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) in two dimensions. The scalar potential also admits two flat directions corresponding to marginal deformations that preserve full supersymmetry and conformal symmetry. This $SO(4)\ltimes \mathbf{T}^6$ gauged supergravity is expected to arise from a dimensional reduction on a three-sphere of the minimal $N=(1,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions coupled to three tensor and four vector multiplets.

Holographic RG flows in six dimensional F(4) gauged supergravity

We study critical points of $F(4)$ gauged supergravity in six dimensions coupled to three vector multiplets. Scalar fields are described by $\mathbb{R}^+\times \frac{SO(4,3)}{SO(4)\times SO(3)}$ coset space, and the gauge group is given by $SO(3)_R\times SO(3)$ with $SO(3)_R$ being the R-symmetry. The maximally supersymmetric critical point with all scalars vanishing preserves the full $SO(3)_R\times SO(3)$ symmetry. This is dual to a superconformal field theories (SCFT$_5$) arising from a near horizon geometry of the D4-D8 brane system in type I$'$ theory with an enhanced global symmetry $E_1\sim SU(2)$. Apart from this trivial critical point, we identify a new supersymmetric critical point preserving the full supersymmetry with the $SO(3)_R\times SO(3)$ symmetry broken to its diagonal subgroup. This critical point should correspond to a new SCFT in five dimensions. We study an RG flow solution interpolating between the SCFT with $E_1$ symmetry and the new supersymmetric critical point. The flow describes a supersymmetric deformation driven by a vacuum expectation value of relevant operators of dimension $3$. We identify the dual operators with the mass terms for hypermultiplet scalars in the dual field theory. The solution provides an example of analytic supersymmetric RG flows in AdS$_6$/CFT$_5$ correspondence.

RG flows from (1,0) 6D SCFTs to N=1 SCFTs in four and three dimensions

We study $AdS_5\times Σ_2$ and $AdS_4\times Σ_3$ solutions of $N=2$, $SO(4)$ gauged supergravity in seven dimensions with $Σ_{2,3}$ being $S^{2,3}$ or $H^{2,3}$. The $SO(4)$ gauged supergravity is obtained from coupling three vector multiplets to the pure $N=2$, $SU(2)$ gauged supergravity. With a topological mass term for the 3-form field, the $SO(4)\sim SU(2)\times SU(2)$ gauged supergravity admits two supersymmetric $AdS_7$ critical points, with $SO(4)$ and $SO(3)$ symmetries, provided that the two $SU(2)$ gauge couplings are different. These vacua correspond to $N=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in six dimensions. In the case of $Σ_2$, we find a class of $AdS_5\times S^2$ and $AdS_5\times H^2$ solutions preserving eight supercharges and $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ symmetry, but only $AdS_5\times H^2$ solutions exist for $SO(2)$ symmetry. These should correspond to some $N=1$ four-dimensional SCFTs. We also give RG flow solutions from the $N=(1,0)$ SCFTs in six dimensions to these four-dimensional fixed points including a two-step flow from the $SO(4)$ $N=(1,0)$ SCFT to the $SO(3)$ $N=(1,0)$ SCFT that eventually flows to the $N=1$ SCFT in four dimensions. For $AdS_4\timesΣ_3$, we find a class of $AdS_4\times S^3$ and $AdS_4\times H^3$ solutions with four supercharges, corresponding to $N=1$ SCFTs in three dimensions. When the two $SU(2)$ gauge couplings are equal, only $AdS_4\times H^3$ are possible. The uplifted solutions for equal $SU(2)$ gauge couplings to eleven dimensions are also given.

Noncompact gauging of N=2 7D supergravity and AdS/CFT holography

Half-maximal gauged supergravity in seven dimensions coupled to $n$ vector multiplets contains $n+3$ vectors and $3n+1$ scalars parametrized by $\mathbb{R}^+\times SO(3,n)/SO(3)\times SO(n)$ coset manifold. The two-form field in the gravity multiplet can be dualized to a three-form field which admits a topological mass term. Possible non-compact gauge groups take the form of $G_0\times H\subset SO(3,n)$ with a compact group $H$. $G_0$ is one of the five possibilities; $SO(3,1)$, $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$, $SO(2,2)$, $SO(2,1)$ and $SO(2,2)\times SO(2,1)$. We investigate all of these possible non-compact gauge groups and classify their vacua. Unlike the gauged supergravity without a topological mass term, there are new supersymmetric $AdS_7$ vacua in the $SO(3,1)$ and $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ gaugings. These correspond to new $N=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories (SCFT) in six dimensions. Additionally, we find a class of $AdS_5\times S^2$ and $AdS_5\times H^2$ backgrounds with $SO(2)$ and $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ symmetries. These should correspond to $N=1$ SCFTs in four dimensions obtained from twisted compactifications of six-dimensional field theories on $S^2$ or $H^2$. We also study RG flows from six-dimensional $N=(1,0)$ SCFT to $N=1$ SCFT in four dimensions and RG flows from a four-dimensional $N=1$ SCFT to a six-dimensional SYM in the IR. The former are driven by a vacuum expectation value of a dimension-four operator dual to the supergravity dilaton while the latter are driven by vacuum expectation values of marginal operators.

Supergravity dual of c-extremization

Recently a general principle, called c-extremization, which determines the exact R-symmetry of two-dimensional SCFTs with N = (0,2) supersymmetry was identified. In this note we show that the supergravity dual corresponds to the extremization of the T-tensor of N = 2 gauged supergravity in three-dimensions. To support this claim, we demonstrate that the expected central charge of SCFTs arising from twisted compactifications of four-dimensional N = 4 SYM on Riemann surfaces, whose gravity dual is a reduction of five-dimensional U(1)^3 gauged supergravity, is recovered in the three-dimensional framework.
