IRC-safe Graph Autoencoder for unsupervised anomaly detection

Anomaly detection through employing machine learning techniques has emerged as a novel powerful tool in the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Historically similar to the development of jet observables, theoretical consistency has not always assumed a central role in the fast development of algorithms and neural network architectures. In this work, we construct an infrared and collinear safe autoencoder based on graph neural networks by employing energy-weighted message passing. We demonstrate that whilst this approach has theoretically favourable properties, it also exhibits formidable sensitivity to non-QCD structures.

Precise probing of the inert Higgs-doublet model at the LHC

The inert Higgs-doublet model provides a simple framework to accommodate a viable Higgs portal scalar dark matter candidate, together with other heavier scalars of mass 100 GeV or more. We study the effect of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in this scenario in the context of the Large Hadron Collider. ${\cal{O}}(α_s)$ corrections to the gluon-gluon-Higgs effective coupling have been taken into account in this study wherever appropriate. We find such corrections have a significant impact on various kinematic distributions and reduce scale uncertainties substantially. Fixed order NLO results are matched to the {\sc Pythia8} parton shower (PS) and the di-fatjet signal associated with the missing transverse momentum is analyzed, as this channel has the ability to explore its entire parameter space during the next phase of the LHC run. A closer look at the NLO+PS computation indicates a sizable NLO effect together with a subdued contribution from associated production of the heavy scalar compared to the pair production, thereby leading to a refined analysis strategy during the multivariate analysis of this signal.

Influence of QCD parton shower in deep learning invisible Higgs through vector boson fusion

Vector boson fusion established itself as a highly reliable channel to probe the Higgs boson and an avenue to uncover new physics at the Large Hadron Collider. This channel provides the most stringent bound on Higgs' invisible decay branching ratio, where the current upper limits are significantly higher than the one expected in the Standard Model. It is remarkable that merely low-level calorimeter data from this characteristically simple process can improve this limit substantially by employing sophisticated deep-learning techniques. The construction of such neural networks seems to comprehend the event kinematics and radiation pattern exceptionally well. However, the full potential of this outstanding capability also warrants a precise theoretical projection of QCD parton showering and corresponding radiation pattern. This work demonstrates the relation using different recoil schemes in the parton shower with leading order and higher-order computation.

Freeze-in Dark Matter Through Forbidden Channel in $U(1)_{B-L}$

We examine a scenario for freeze-in production of dark matter, which occurs due to the large thermal correction to the mass of a decaying mediator particle present in the thermal bath of the early Universe. We show that the decays, which are kinematically forbidden otherwise, can open up at very high temperatures and dominate the dark matter production. We explore such forbidden production of dark matter in the minimal $U(1)_{B-L}$ model, comparing dark matter phenomenology in the context of forbidden frozen-in with the standard picture.

Energy-weighted Message Passing: an infra-red and collinear safe graph neural network algorithm

Hadronic signals of new-physics origin at the Large Hadron Collider can remain hidden within the copiously produced hadronic jets. Unveiling such signatures require highly performant deep-learning algorithms. We construct a class of Graph Neural Networks (GNN) in the message-passing formalism that makes the network output infra-red and collinear (IRC) safe, an important criterion satisfied within perturbative QCD calculations. Including IRC safety of the network output as a requirement in the construction of the GNN improves its explainability and robustness against theoretical uncertainties in the data. We generalise Energy Flow Networks (EFN), an IRC safe deep-learning algorithm on a point cloud, defining energy weighted local and global readouts on GNNs. Applying the simplest of such networks to identify top quarks, W bosons and quark/gluon jets, we find that it outperforms state-of-the-art EFNs. Additionally, we obtain a general class of graph construction algorithms that give structurally invariant graphs in the IRC limit, a necessary criterion for the IRC safety of the GNN output.

Self-interacting freeze-in dark matter in a singlet doublet scenario

We examine the non-thermal production of dark matter in a scalar extended singlet doublet fermion model where the lightest admixture of the fermions constitutes a suitable dark matter candidate. The dark sector is non-minimal with the MeV scale singlet scalar, which is stable in the Universe lifetime and can mediate the self-interaction for the multi-GeV fermion dark matter mitigating the small scale structure anomalies of the Universe. If the dark sector is strongly coupled, it undergoes internal dark thermal equilibrium after freeze-in production, and we end up with suppressed relic abundance for the fermion dark matter in a radiation dominated Universe. In contrast, the presence of a modified cosmological phase in the early era drives the fermion dark matter to satisfy nearly the whole amount of observed relic. It also turns out that the assumption of an unconventional cosmological history can allow the GeV scale dark matter to be probed at LHC from displaced vertex signature with improved sensitivity.

A dark clue to seesaw and leptogenesis in a pseudo-Dirac singlet doublet scenario with (non)standard cosmology

We propose an appealing alternative scenario of leptogenesis assisted by dark sector which leads to the baryon asymmetry of the Universe satisfying all theoretical and experimental constraints. The dark sector carries a non minimal set up of singlet doublet fermionic dark matter extended with copies of a real singlet scalar field. A small Majorana mass term for the singlet dark fermion, in addition to the typical Dirac term, provides the more favourable dark matter of pseudo-Dirac type, capable of escaping the direct search. Such a construction also offers a formidable scope to radiative generation of active neutrino masses. In the presence of a (non)standard thermal history of the Universe, we perform the detailed dark matter phenomenology adopting the suitable benchmark scenarios, consistent with direct detection and neutrino oscillations data. Besides, we have demonstrated that the singlet scalars can go through CP-violating out of equilibrium decay, producing an ample amount of lepton asymmetry. Such an asymmetry then gets converted into the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe through the non-perturbative sphaleron processes owing to the presence of the alternative cosmological background considered here. Unconventional thermal history of the Universe can thus aspire to lend a critical role both in the context of dark matter as well as in realizing baryogenesis

Probing non-standard $b\bar{b}h$ interaction at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

In the detailed probe of Higgs boson properties at the Large Hadron Collider, and in looking for new physics signatures in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector, the bottom quark Yukawa coupling has a crucial role. We investigate possible departure from the standard model value of $b\bar{b}h$ coupling, phenomenologically expressed in terms of a modification factor $α_b$, in $b\bar{b}$-associated production of the $125$-GeV scalar at the high-luminosity LHC. In a next-to-leading order estimate, we make use of a gradient boosting algorithm to improve in statistical significance upon a cut-based analysis. It is found possible to probe down to $α_b = 3$ with more than $5~σ$ significance, with ${\cal L} = 3000$ fb$^{-1}$ and $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, while the achievable limit at $95\%$ C.L. is $\pm 1.95$.

Invisible Higgs search through Vector Boson Fusion: A deep learning approach

Vector boson fusion proposed initially as an alternative channel for finding heavy Higgs has now established itself as a crucial search scheme to probe different properties of the Higgs boson or for new physics. We explore the merit of deep-learning entirely from the low-level calorimeter data in the search for invisibly decaying Higgs. Such an effort supersedes decades-old faith in the remarkable event kinematics and radiation pattern as a signature to the absence of any color exchange between incoming partons in the vector boson fusion mechanism. We investigate among different neural network architectures, considering both low-level and high-level input variables as a detailed comparative analysis. To have a consistent comparison with existing techniques, we closely follow a recent experimental study of CMS search on invisible Higgs with 36 fb$^{-1}$ data. We find that sophisticated deep-learning techniques have the impressive capability to improve the bound on invisible branching ratio by a factor of three, utilizing the same amount of data. Without relying on any exclusive event reconstruction, this novel technique can provide the most stringent bounds on the invisible branching ratio of the SM-like Higgs boson. Such an outcome has the ability to constraint many different BSM models severely.

Boosted jet techniques for a supersymmetric scenario with gravitino LSP

Search for compressed supersymmetry at multi-TeV scale, in the presence of a light gravitino dark matter, can get sizable uplift while looking into the associated fat-jets with missing transverse momenta as a signature of the boson produced in the decay process of much heavier next-to-lightest sparticle. We focus on the hadronic decay of the ensuing Higgs and/or $Z$ boson giving rise to at least two fat-jets and $\slashed{E}_T$ in the final state. We perform a detailed background study adopting a multivariate analysis using a boosted decision tree to provide a robust investigation to explore the discovery potential for such signal at 14 TeV LHC considering different benchmark points satisfying all the theoretical and experimental constraints. This channel provides the best discovery prospects with most of the benchmarks discoverable within an integrated luminosity of $\mathcal{L}=200$ fb$^{-1}$. Kinematic observables are investigated in order to distinguish between compressed and uncompressed spectra having similar event yields.

Modelling the influence of progressive social awareness, lockdown and anthropogenic migration on the dynamics of an epidemic

The basic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model is extended to include effects of progressive social awareness, lockdowns and anthropogenic migration. It is found that social awareness can effectively contain the spread by lowering the basic reproduction rate $R_0$. Interestingly, the awareness is found to be more effective in a society which can adopt the awareness faster compared to the one having a slower response. The paper also separates the mortality fraction from the clinically recovered fraction and attempts to model the outcome of lockdowns, in absence and presence of social awareness. It is seen that staggered exits from lockdowns are not only economically beneficial but also helps to curb the infection spread. Moreover, a staggered exit strategy with progressive social awareness is found to be the most efficient intervention. The paper also explores the effects of anthropogenic migration on the dynamics of the epidemic in a two-zone scenario. The calculations yield dissimilar evolution of different fractions in different zones. Such models can be convenient to strategize the division of a large zone into smaller sub-zones for a disproportionate imposition of lockdown, or, an exit from one. Calculations are done with parameters consistent with the SARS-COV-2 pathogen in the Indian context.

Data Processing Software for Chandrayaan-2 Solar X-ray Monitor

Solar X-ray Monitor (XSM) instrument of India's Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission carries out broadband spectroscopy of the Sun in soft X-rays. XSM, with its unique features such as low background, high time cadence, and high spectral resolution, provides the opportunity to characterize transient and quiescent X-ray emission from the Sun even during low activity periods. It records the X-ray spectrum at one-second cadence, and the data recorded on-board are downloaded at regular intervals along with that of other payloads. During ground pre-processing, the XSM data is segregated, and the level-0 data is made available for higher levels of processing at the Payload Operations Center (POC). XSM Data Analysis Software (XSMDAS) is developed to carry out the processing of the level-0 data to higher levels and to generate calibrated light curves and spectra for user-defined binning parameters such that it is suitable for further scientific analysis. A front-end for the XSMDAS named XSM Quick Look Display (XSMQLD) is also developed to facilitate a first look at the data without applying calibration. XSM Data Management-Monitoring System (XSMDMS) is designed to carry out automated data processing at the POC and to maintain an SQLite database with relevant information on the data sets and an internal web application for monitoring data quality and instrument health. All XSM raw and calibrated data products are in FITS format, organized into day-wise files, and the data archive follows Planetary Data System-4 (PDS4) standards. The XSM data will be made available after a lock-in period along with the XSM Data Analysis Software from ISRO Science Data Archive (ISDA) at Indian Space Science Data Center(ISSDC). Here we discuss the design and implementation of all components of the software for the XSM data processing and the contents of the XSM data archive.

Linking the pseudo-Dirac dark matter and radiative neutrino mass in a singlet doublet scenario

We examine simple extension of the standard model with a pair of fermions, one singlet and a doublet, in a common thread linking the dark matter problem with the smallness of neutrino masses associated with several exciting features. In the presence of a small bare Majorana mass term, the singlet fermion brings in a pseudo-Dirac dark matter capable of evading the strong spin-independent direct detection bound by suppressing the dark matter annihilation processes mediated by the neutral current. In consequence, the allowed range of mixing angle between the doublet and the singlet fermions gets enhanced substantially. Presence of the same mass term in association of singlet scalars also elevates tiny but nonzero masses radiatively for light Majorana neutrino satisfying observed oscillation data.

Looking for Minimal Inverse Seesaw scenarios at the LHC with Jet Substructure Techniques

Simple extensions of the Standard Model (SM) with additional Right Handed Neutrinos (RHNs) can elegantly explain the existence of small neutrino masses and their flavor mixings. Collider searches for sterile neutrinos are being actively pursued currently. Heavy RHNs may dominantly decay into $W^\pm l^\pm$ after being produced at the LHC. In this paper, we consider collider signatures of heavy pseudo-Dirac neutrinos in the context of inverse seesaw scenario, with a sizable mixing with the SM neutrinos under two different flavor structures, viz., Flavor Diagonal (FD) and Flavor Non-Diagonal (FND) scenarios. For the latter scenario we use a general parametrization for the model parameters by introducing an arbitrary orthogonal matrix and nonzero Dirac and Majorana phases. We then perform a parameter scan to identify allowed parameter regions which satisfy all experimental constraints. As an alternative channel to the traditional trilepton signature, we propose the opposite-sign di-lepton signature in the final state, in association with a fat jet from the hadronic decay of the boosted $W^\pm$ . We specifically consider a fat jet topology and explore the required enhancements from exploiting the characteristics of the jet substructure techniques. We perform a comprehensive collider analysis to demonstrate the effectiveness of this channel in both of the scenarios, significantly enhancing the bounds on the RHN mass and mixing angles at the 13 TeV LHC. Interestingly the FND scenario can reach up to a 5- $σ$ limit under the presence of the general parametrization at the high luminosity LHC.

Probing the inert doublet model using jet substructure with a multivariate analysis

We explore the challenging but phenomenologically interesting hierarchical mass spectrum of the Inert Doublet Model where relatively light dark matter along with much heavier scalar states can fully satisfy the constraints on the relic abundance and also fulfill other theoretical as well as collider and astrophysical bounds. To probe this region of parameter space at the LHC, we propose a signal process that combines up to two large radius boosted jets along with substantial missing transverse momentum. Aided by our intuitive signal selection, we capture a hybrid process where the di-fatjet signal is significantly enhanced by the mono-fatjet contribution with minimal effects on the SM di-fatjet background. Substantiated by the sizable mass difference between the scalars, these boosted jets, originally produced from the hadronic decay of massive vector bosons, still carry the inherent footprint of their root. These features implanted inside the jet substructure can provide additional handles to deal with a large background involving QCD jets. We adopt a multivariate analysis using boosted decision tree to provide a robust mechanism to explore the hierarchical scenario, which would bring almost the entire available parameter space well within reach of the 14 TeV LHC runs with high luminosity.

Exploring CP phase in $τ$-lepton Yukawa coupling in Higgs decays at the LHC

We study the prospect of determining the CP violating phase in $τ$-lepton Yukawa coupling at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While the current run is already exploring the production of a pair of the third generation $τ$ leptons from Higgs decay, these measurements are not sensitive enough to constrain the CP violating phase. In this paper, several CP odd observables are proposed and analyzed utilizing the dominant channels with the semi-invisible hadronic decay of $τ$. Several asymmetries corresponding to the T odd momentum correlations are also studied and their sensitivities to the CP violating phase in tau-lepton Yukawa couplings are estimated at 13 TeV LHC with 1000 ${fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We also present a novel way to reconstruct $τ$ momentum at the LHC utilizing the information of impact parameter. Finally, we obtain that the asymmetries can be as large as 35$\%$ for a case of maximal CP violation in the $τ$ Yukawa couplings.

Inferring the covariant $Θ$-exact noncommutative coupling in the top quark pair production at linear colliders

A novel non-minimal interaction of neutral right-handed fermion and abelian gauge field in the covariant $Θ$-exact noncommutative standard model (NCSM) which is invariant under Very Special Relativity (VSR) Lorentz subgroup, opens an avenue to study the top quark pair production at linear colliders. Here the coupling denoted as $κ$ and the noncommutative (NC) scale $Λ$. In this work, we consider two types of analysis, one is without considering helicity basis and another, considering helicity states of the polarized and unpolarized initial and final particles. In the first case, when $κ$ is positive and for certain values of $Λ$, we arrived a specific threshold value of machine energy (units of GeV) $\sqrt{s_0}$ ($ \simeq 2.52 ~Λ+ 39$ ) may be quite useful to probe NCSM with the unpolarized beam. The statistical $χ^2$ analysis of the azimuthal anisotropy is quite possible when $κ$ takes negative value $0 >κ> -0.596$ which persuade a lower limit on NC scale $Λ$ ($ 1.0\, \text{to} \, 2.4\,\text{TeV}$) at $κ_{max}=-0.296 (95\%$ C.L) according to luminosity ranging from $100\,fb^{-1} \text{to}1000\,fb^{-1}$ at machine energy $\sqrt{s}=1.4\,\text{TeV}\,\text{and}\, 3.0\,\text{TeV}$. In another case, we performed polarized beam analysis to probe NCSM in the light of following observables azimuthal anisotropy, helicity correlation, and top quark helicity left-right asymmetry. The polarization of the initial beam $\{ P_{e^{-}},P_{e^{+}}\} = \{-0.8,0.3\}( \{-0.8,0.6\})$ enhances the ranges of lower limit on $Λ$, $i.e.\, 1.13 \, \text{to} \, 2.80\,\text{TeV}$ at $κ_{max}$ alongside the $κ_{max}$ enhanced into $-0.5445 \,(-0.607)$ $95\%$C.L accord with luminosity and $\sqrt{s}$. Finally, we studied the intriguing mixing of the UV and the IR by invoking $T(2)$ VSR Lorentz subgroup symmetry on NC tensor $Θ_{μν}$.

Constraining slepton and chargino through compressed top squark search

We examine the compressed mass spectrum with sub-TeV top squark ($\tilde t$) as lightest colored (s)particle in natural supersymmetry (SUSY). Such spectra are searched along with an additional hard jet, not only to boost the soft decay particles, also to yield enough missing transverse momentum. Several interesting kinematic variables are proposed to improve the probe performance for this difficult region, where we concentrate on relatively clean dileptonic channel of the top squark decaying into lightest neutralino ($χ_1^0$), which is also the lightest supersymmetric particle. In this work, we investigate the merit of these kinematic variables, sensitive to compressed mass region extending the search by introducing additional states, chargino and slepton (sneutrino) having masses in between the $\tilde t$ and $χ_1^0$. Enhanced production and lack of branching suppression are capable of providing a strong limit on chargino and slepton/sneutrino mass along with top squark mass. We perform a detailed collider analysis using simplified SUSY spectrum and found that with the present LHC data $M_{\tilde t}$ can be excluded up to 710 GeV right away for $M_{χ_1^0}$ of 640 GeV for a particular mass gap between different states.
