Jet substructure shedding light on heavy Majorana neutrinos at the LHC

The existence of tiny neutrino masses and flavor mixings can be explained naturally in various seesaw models, many of which typically having additional Majorana type SM gauge singlet right handed neutrinos ($N$). If they are at around the electroweak scale and furnished with sizeable mixings with light active neutrinos, they can be produced at high energy colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A characteristic signature would be same sign lepton pairs, violating lepton number, together with light jets -- $pp\to N\ell^{\pm}, \; N\to\ell^{\pm}W^{\mp}, \; W^{\mp}\to jj$. We propose a new search strategy utilising jet substructure techniques, observing that for a heavy right handed neutrino mass $M_N$ much above $M_{W^\pm}$, the two jets coming out of the boosted $W^\pm$ may be interpreted as a single fat-jet ($J$). Hence, the distinguishing signal topology will be $\ell^{\pm}\ell^{\pm} J$. Performing a comprehensive study of the different signal regions along with complete background analysis, in tandem with detector level simulations, we compute statistical significance limits. We find that heavy neutrinos can be explored effectively for mass ranges $300$ GeV $\leq M_N \leq 800$ GeV and different light-heavy neutrino mixing $|V_{μN}|^{2}$. At the 13 TeV LHC with 3000 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity one can competently explore mixing angles much below present LHC limits, and moreover exceed bounds from electroweak precision data.

Demystifying the compressed top squark region with kinematic variables

The ongoing perplexing scenario with no hints of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider can be elucidated amicably if the exotic particle spectrum in many of the well-motivated theoretical models possesses degenerate mass. We investigate the usefulness of different kinematic variables sensitive to the compressed mass region, and propose a search strategy considering a phenomenological supersymmetric scenario where the top squark undergoes a four-body decay due to its extremely narrow mass difference with the lightest supersymmetric particle. Considering a challenging but relatively clean dileptonic decay channel, we demonstrate that one can effectively restrain the significant background from the top quark, which provides a complementary approach to the present CMS analysis. With the new strategic approach the current limit can be extended to a phase-space region that was not explored before.

Search for a compressed supersymmetric spectrum with a light Gravitino

Presence of the light gravitino as dark matter candidate in a supersymmetric (SUSY) model opens up interesting collider signatures consisting of one or more hard photons together with multiple jets and missing transverse energy from the cascade decay. We investigate such signals at the 13 TeV LHC in presence of compressed SUSY spectra, consistent with the Higgs mass as well as collider and dark matter constraints. We analyse and compare the discovery potential in different benchmark scenarios consisting of both compressed and uncompressed SUSY spectra, considering different levels of compression and intermediate decay modes. Our conclusion is that compressed spectra upto 2.5 TeV are likely to be probed even before the high luminosity run of LHC. Kinematic variables are also suggested, which offer distinction between compressed and uncompressed spectra yielding similar event rates for photons + multi-jets + $E\!\!\!\!/_T$.

Production of Heavy neutrino in next-to-leading order QCD at the LHC and beyond

Majorana and pseudo-Dirac heavy neutrinos are introduced into the type-I and inverse seesaw models, respectively, in explaining the naturally small neutrino mass. TeV scale heavy neutrinos can also be accommodated to have a sizable mixing with the Standard Model light neutrinos, through which they can be produced and detected at the high energy colliders. In this paper we consider the Next-to-Leading Order QCD corrections to the heavy neutrino production, and study the scale variation in cross-sections as well as the kinematic distributions with different final states at $14$ TeV LHC and also in the context of $100$ TeV hadron collider. The repertoire of the Majorana neutrino is realized through the characteristic signature of the same-sign dilepton pair, whereas, due to a small lepton number violation, the pseudo-Dirac heavy neutrino can manifest the trileptons associated with missing energy in the final state. Using the $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV, $20.3$ fb$^{-1}$ and $19.7$ fb$^{-1}$ data at the ATLAS and CMS respectively, we obtain prospective scale dependent upper bounds of the light-heavy neutrino mixing angles for the Majorana heavy neutrinos at the $14$ TeV LHC and $100$ TeV collider. Further exploiting a recent study on the anomalous multilepton search by CMS at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with $19.5$ fb$^{-1}$ data, we also obtain the prospective scale dependent upper bounds on the mixing angles for the pseudo-Dirac neutrinos. We thus project a scale dependent prospective reach using the NLO processes at the $14$ TeV LHC.

Reconstructing semi-invisible events in resonant tau pair production from Higgs

We study the possibility of utilising the constrained mass variable, $M_{2Cons}$, in reconstructing the semi-invisible events originated from a resonant production at the LHC. While this proposal is effective for any similar antler type production mechanism, here we demonstrate with potentially interesting scenario, when the Higgs boson decays into a pair of third generation $τ$ leptons. Buoyed with a relatively large Yukawa coupling, the LHC has already started exploring this pair production to investigate the properties of Higgs in the leptonic sector. Dominant signatures through hadronic decay of tau, associated with invisible neutrinos compound the difficulty in the reconstruction of such events. Exploiting the already existing Higgs mass bound, this new method provides a unique event reconstruction, together with a significant enhancement in terms of efficiency over the existing methods.

Drell-Yan as an avenue to test noncommutative Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the Drell-Yan process at the Large Hadron Collider in presence of the noncommutative extension of standard model. Using the Seiberg-Witten map, we calculate the production cross-section to the first order in the noncommutative parameter $Θ_{μν}$. Although this idea is evolving for long, limited amount of phenomenological analysis was done so far and dominantly in the context of linear collider. Some outstanding feature from this non-minimal noncommutative standard model not only modify the couplings over SM production channel, also allow additional nonstandard vertices which can play a significant role. Hence in the Drell-Yan process, as studied in present analysis, one also needs to account for gluon fusion process at the tree level. Some of the characteristic signatures such as oscillatory azimuthal distributions are outcome of the momentum dependent effective couplings. We explore the noncommutative scale $Λ_{NC} \ge 0.4~\rm{TeV}$ considering different machine energy ranging from $7~\rm{TeV}$ to $13~\rm{TeV}$.

Mass reconstruction with $M_2$ under constraint in semi-invisible production at a hadron collider

The mass-constraining variable $M_2$, a $(1+3)$-dimensional natural successor of extremely popular $M_{T2}$, possesses an array of rich features having the ability to use on-shell mass constraints in semi-invisible production at a hadron collider. In this work, we investigate the consequence of applying a heavy resonance mass-shell constraint in the context of a semi-invisible antler decay topology produced at the LHC. Our proposed variable, under additional constraint, develops a new kink solution at the true masses. This enables one to determine the invisible particle mass simultaneously with the parent particle mass from these events. We analyze in a way to measure this kink optimally, exploring the origin and the properties of such interesting characteristics. We also study the event reconstruction capability inferred from this new variable and find that the resulting momenta are unique and well correlated with true invisible particle momenta.

A revisit to a compressed supersymmetric spectrum with 125 GeV Higgs

A compressed spectrum was initially proposed as an explanation for the elusiveness of low-energy supersymmetry (SUSY). Some characteristic signals at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), such as mono-jet + \slashed{E}_T, had been propounded as its trademark signals. However, later investigations suggested that lower limits on the supersymmetric particle masses would be quite stringent in spite of compression. Also, most compressed SUSY scenarios studied so far are only partially compressed. In this backdrop, we make an exhaustive analysis of the compressed SUSY scenarios for the 13 TeV run of LHC, keeping the level of compression in the entire spectrum as high as possible. A broad class of benchmark spectra are thus considered, after ensuring consistency with the observed Higgs mass as well as the dark matter constraints. The rates of observable events in the high-energy run are obtained through detailed simulation, for both the multi-jet +\slashed{E}_T and mono-jet + \slashed{E}_T final states. Our conclusion is that the former is still more efficient to reveal a compressed SUSY spectrum first, while the latter can serve as a useful confirmatory channel.

Implications of Unitarity and Charge Breaking Minima in Left-Right Symmetric Model

We examine the usefulness of the unitarity conditions in Left-Right symmetric model which can translate into giving a stronger constraint on the model parameters together with the criteria derived from vacuum stability and perturbativity. In this light, we demonstrate the bounds on the masses of the physical scalars present in the model and find the scenario where multiple scalar modes are in the reach of Large Hadron Collider. We also analyse the additional conditions that can come from charge breaking minima in this context.

Search for associated production of Higgs with Z boson in the noncommutative Standard Model at linear colliders

We study the associated Higgs production with Z boson at future linear colliders in the framework of the minimal noncommutative standard model. Using the Seiberg-Witten map, we calculate the production cross-section considering all orders of the noncommutative parameter $Θ_{μν}$. We consider the effect of earth's rotation on the orientation of $Θ_{μν}$ with respect to the laboratory frame and thus on the total cross-section, it's azimuthal distribution and rapidity distribution for the machine energy ranging from 0.5 TeV to 3.0 TeV corresponding to the noncommutative scale $Λ\ge $ 0.5 TeV.

Mass determination and event reconstruction at Large Hadron Collider

After successful discovery of the Higgs boson, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) would confront the major challenge in searching for new physics and new particles. Any such observation necessitates the determination of mass and other quantum numbers like spin, polarisation etc. Many of our theories beyond the Standard Model (BSM) motivated from profound experimental indication of dark matter (DM), trying to accommodate them as some stable BSM particles within these theory. In such scenario, any production of heavy resonance of new particles eventually decay semi-invisibly resulting at least two stable particles in the final state. Reconstruction of these events at hadron colliders together with the mass determination of DM or intermediate particles is challenging and center to this present analysis. In this work we discuss some mass restricting way that can lead us to determine the new particle mass when it decays semi-invisibly. We will also present a new method which can be used for the full reconstruction of the event in the above scenario.

Constraints on a seesaw model leading to quasidegenerate neutrinos and signatures at the LHC

We consider a variant of TeV scale seesaw models in which three additional heavy right handed neutrinos are added to the standard model to generate the quasi-degenerate light neutrinos. This model is theoretically interesting since it can be fully rebuilt from the experimental data of neutrino oscillations except for an unknown factor in the Dirac Yukawa coupling. We study the constrains on this coupling coming from meta-stability of electro-weak vacuum. Even stronger bound comes from the lepton flavor violating decays on this model, especially in a heavy neutrino mass scenario which is within the collider reach. Bestowed with these constrained parameters, we explore the production and discovery potential coming from these heavy neutrinos at the $14$~TeV run of Large Hadron Collider. Signatures with tri-lepton final state together with backgrounds are considered in a realistic simulation.

Looking for hints of a reconstructible seesaw model at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the production of heavy neutrinos at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through the dominant s-channel production mode as well as the vector boson fusion (VBF) process. We consider the TeV scale minimal linear seesaw model containing two heavy singlets with opposite lepton number. This model is fully reconstructible from oscillation data apart from an overall normalization constant which can be constrained from meta-stability of the electroweak vacuum and bounds coming from lepton flavor violation (LFV) searches. Dirac nature of heavy neutrinos in this model implies suppression of the conventional same-sign-dilepton signal at the LHC. We analyze the collider signatures with tri-lepton final state and missing transverse energy as well as VBF type signals which are characterized by two additional forward tagged jets. Our investigation reveals that due to stringent constraints on light-heavy mixing coming from LFV and meta-stability bounds, the model can be explored only for light to moderate mass range of heavy neutrinos. We also note that in case of a positive signal, flavor counting of the final tri-lepton channel can give information about the mass hierarchy of the light neutrinos.

Constrained $\sqrt{\hat{S}_{min}}$ and reconstructing with semi-invisible production at hadron colliders

Mass variable \sqrt{\hat{S}_{min}} and its variants were constructed by minimising the parton level center of mass energy that is consistent with all inclusive measurements. They were proposed to have the ability to measure mass scale of new physics in a fully model independent way. In this work we relax the criteria by assuming the availability of partial informations of new physics events and thus constraining this mass variable even further. Starting with two different classes of production topology, i.e. antler and non-antler, we demonstrate the usefulness of these variables to constrain the unknown masses. This discussion is illustrated with different examples, from the standard model Higgs production and beyond standard model resonance productions leading to semi-invisible production. We also utilise these constrains to reconstruct the semi-invisible events with the momenta of invisible particles and thus improving the measurements to reveal the properties of new physics.

Copositive Criteria and Boundedness of the Scalar Potential

To understand physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) it is important to have the precise knowledge of Higgs boson and top quark masses as well as strong coupling. Recently discovered new boson which is likely to be the SM Higgs with mass 123-127 GeV has a submissive impact on the stability of the new physics beyond standard model (BSM). The beyond standard model scenarios that include many scalar fields posses scalar potential with many quartic couplings. Due to the complicated structures of such scalar potentials it is indeed difficult to adjudge the stability of the vacuum. Thus one needs to formulate a proper prescription for computing the vacuum stability criteria. In this paper we have used the idea of copositive matrices to deduce the conditions that guarantee the boundedness of the scalar potential. We have discussed the basic idea behind the copositivity and then used that to determine the vacuum stability criteria for the Left-Right symmetric models with doublet, and triplet scalars and Type-II seesaw. As this idea is based on the strong mathematical arguments it helps to compute simple and unique stability criteria embracing the maximum allowed parameter space.

Constraining a class of B-L extended models from vacuum stability and perturbativity

The precise knowledge of the Standard Model Higgs boson and top quark masses and couplings are crucial to understand the physics beyond it. SM like Higgs boson having mass in the range of 123-127 GeV squeezes the parameters for beyond standard model. In recent LHC era many TeV scale neutrino mass models have earned much attention as they pose many interesting phenomenological aspects. We have contemplated B-L extended models which are theoretically well motivated and phenomenologically interesting, and successfully explain neutrino mass generation. In this article we have analysed the detailed structures of the scalar potentials for such models. We have computed the criteria which guarantee that vacuum is bounded from below in all directions. Along with that triviality and perturbativity bounds are also necessitated. Incorporating all such effects we constrain the parameters of such models by performing their renormalization group evolutions.

Generation of Neutrino mass from new physics at TeV scale and Multi-lepton Signatures at the LHC

In this paper we consider generation of naturally small neutrino masses from a dimension-7 operator. Such a term can arise in presence of a scalar quadruplet and a pair of vector-like fermion triplets and enables one to obtain small neutrino masses through TeV scale linear seesaw mechanism. We study the phenomenology of the charged scalars of this model, in particular, the multi-lepton signatures at the Large Hadron Collider. Of special importance are the presence of the same-sign-tri-lepton signatures originating from the triply-charged scalars. The Standard Model background for such processes is small and hence this is considered as smoking gun signal of new physics. We also looked for events with three, four, five and six-leptons which have negligible contamination from the Standard Model. We further point out the spectacular lepton flavour violating four-lepton signal which can be the hallmark for these type of models. We also compute the added contributions in the rate for the Standard Model Higgs decaying to two photons via the charged scalars in this model.

A Storm in a "T" Cup

We revisit the process of transversification and agglomeration of particle momenta that are often performed in analyses at hadron colliders, and show that many of the existing mass-measurement variables proposed for hadron colliders are far more closely related to each other than is widely appreciated, and indeed can all be viewed as a common mass bound specialized for a variety of purposes.
