How to look for supersymmetry under the lamppost at the LHC

We apply a model-independent, agnostic approach to the collider phenomenology of supersymmetry (SUSY), in which all mass parameters are taken as free inputs at the weak scale. We consider the gauginos, higgsinos, and the first two generations of sleptons and squarks, and analyze all possible mass hierarchies among them ($4\times 8!=161,280$ in total) in which the lightest superpartner is neutral, leading to missing energy. In each case, we identify the full set of the dominant (i.e. least suppressed by phase space, small mixing angles or Yukawa couplings) decay chains originating from the lightest colored superpartner. Our exhaustive search reveals several quite dramatic yet unexplored multilepton signatures with up to 8 isolated leptons (plus possibly up to 2 massive gauge or Higgs bosons) in the final state. Such events are spectacular, background-free for all practical purposes, and may lead to a discovery of SUSY in the very early stage ($\sim 10\ {\rm pb}^{-1}$) of LHC operations at 7 TeV.

RECO level \sqrt{s}_{min} and subsystem \sqrt{s}_{min}: improved global inclusive variables for measuring the new physics mass scale in missing energy events at hadron colliders

The variable \sqrt{s}_{min} was originally proposed in arXiv:0812.1042 as a model-independent, global and fully inclusive measure of the new physics mass scale in missing energy events at hadron colliders. In the original incarnation of \sqrt{s}_{min}, however, the connection to the new physics mass scale was blurred by the effects of the underlying event, most notably initial state radiation and multiple parton interactions. In this paper we advertize two improved variants of the \sqrt{s}_{min} variable, which overcome this problem. First we show that by evaluating the \sqrt{s}_{min} variable at the RECO level, in terms of the reconstructed objects in the event, the effects from the underlying event are significantly diminished and the nice correlation between the peak in the \sqrt{s}_{min}^{(reco)} distribution and the new physics mass scale is restored. Secondly, the underlying event problem can be avoided altogether when the \sqrt{s}_{min} concept is applied to a subsystem of the event which does not involve any QCD jets. We supply an analytic formula for the resulting subsystem \sqrt{s}_{min}^{(sub)} variable and show that its peak exhibits the usual correlation with the mass scale of the particles produced in the subsystem. Finally, we contrast \sqrt{s}_{min} to other popular inclusive variables such as H_T, M_{Tgen} and M_{TTgen}. We illustrate our discussion with several examples from supersymmetry, and with dilepton events from top quark pair production.

Superpartner mass measurements with 1D decomposed MT2

We propose a new model-independent technique for mass measurements in missing energy events at hadron colliders. We illustrate our method with the most challenging case of a short, single-step decay chain. We consider inclusive same-sign chargino pair production in supersymmetry, followed by leptonic decays to sneutrinos. We introduce two one-dimensional decompositions of the Cambridge MT2 variable: MT2_\parallel and MT2_\perp, on the direction of the upstream transverse momentum PT and the direction orthogonal to it, respectively. We show that the sneutrino mass can be measured directly by minimizing the number of events N in which MT2 exceeds a certain threshold, conveniently measured from the endpoint MT2^max_\perp.

Dark Matter Particle Spectroscopy at the LHC: Generalizing MT2 to Asymmetric Event Topologies

We consider SUSY-like missing energy events at hadron colliders and critically examine the common assumption that the missing energy is the result of two identical missing particles. In order to experimentally test this hypothesis, we generalize the subsystem MT2 variable to the case of asymmetric event topologies, where the two SUSY decay chains terminate in different "children" particles. In this more general approach, the endpoint MT2max of the MT2 distribution now gives the mass Mp(Mc(a),Mc(b)) of the parent particle as a function of two input children masses Mc(a) and Mc(b). We propose two methods for an independent determination of the individual children masses Mc(a) and Mc(b). First, in the presence of upstream transverse momentum P(UTM) the corresponding function Mp(Mc(a),Mc(b),P(UTM)) is independent of P(UTM) at precisely the right values of the children masses. Second, the previously discussed MT2 "kink" is now generalized to a "ridge" on the 2-dimensional surface Mp(Mc(a),Mc(b)). As we show in several examples, quite often there is a special point along that ridge which marks the true values of the children masses. Our results allow collider experiments to probe a multi-component dark matter sector directly and without any theoretical prejudice.

Shedding Light on the Dark Sector with Direct WIMP Production

A Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) provides an attractive dark matter candidate, and should be within reach of the next generation of high-energy colliders. We consider the process of direct WIMP pair-production, accompanied by an initial-state radiation photon, in electron-positron collisions at the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). We present a parametrization of the differential cross section for this process which conveniently separates the model-independent information provided by cosmology from the model-dependent inputs from particle physics. As an application, we consider two simple models, one supersymmetric, and another of the "universal extra dimensions" (UED) type. The discovery reach of the ILC and the expected precision of parameter measurements are studied in each model. In addition, for each of the two examples, we also investigate the ability of the ILC to distinguish between the two models through a shape-discrimination analysis of the photon energy spectrum. We show that with sufficient beam polarization the alternative model interpretation can be ruled out in a large part of the relevant parameter space.

\sqrt{s}_min: a global inclusive variable for determining the mass scale of new physics in events with missing energy at hadron colliders

We propose a new global and fully inclusive variable \sqrt{s}_{min} for determining the mass scale of new particles in events with missing energy at hadron colliders. We define \sqrt{s}_{min} as the minimum center-of-mass parton level energy consistent with the measured values of the total calorimeter energy E and the total visible momentum \vec{P}. We prove that for an arbitrary event, \sqrt{s}_{min} is simply given by the formula \sqrt{s}_{min}=\sqrt{E^2-P_z^2}+\sqrt{\met^2+M_{inv}^2}, where M_{inv} is the total mass of all invisible particles produced in the event. We use t\bar{t} production and several supersymmetry examples to argue that the peak in the \sqrt{s}_{min} distribution is correlated with the mass threshold of the parent particles originally produced in the event. This conjecture allows a determination of the heavy superpartner mass scale (as a function of the LSP mass) in a completely general and model-independent way, and without the need for any exclusive event reconstruction. In our SUSY examples of several multijet plus missing energy signals, the accuracy of the mass measurement based on \sqrt{s}_{min} is typically at the percent level, and never worse than 10%. After including the effects of initial state radiation and multiple parton interactions, the precision gets worse, but for heavy SUSY mass spectra remains 10%.

Graviton production with 2 jets at the LHC in large extra dimensions

We study Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton production in the large extra dimensions model via 2 jets plus missing transverse momentum signatures at the LHC. We make predictions for both the signal and the dominant Zjj and Wjj backgrounds, where we introduce missing P_T-dependent jet selection cuts that ensure the smallness of the 2-jet rate over the 1-jet rate. With the same jet selection cuts, the distributions of the two jets and their correlation with the missing transverse momentum provide additional evidence for the production of an invisible massive object.

Looking for a heavy wino LSP in collider and dark matter experiments

We investigate the phenomenology of a wino LSP as obtained in AMSB and some string models. The WMAP constraint on the DM relic density implies a wino LSP mass of 2.0-2.3 TeV. We find a viable signature for such a heavy wino at CLIC, operating at its highest CM energy of 5 TeV. One also expects a viable monochromatic $γ$-ray signal from its pair-annihilation at the galactic centre at least for cuspy DM halo profiles.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to slepton pair production via vector-boson fusion

Slepton pairs can be produced in vector-boson fusion processes at hadron colliders. The next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the electroweak production cross section for p p -> slepton+ slepton- +2jets at order alpha_s alpha^4 have been calculated and implemented in a NLO parton-level Monte Carlo program. Numerical results are presented for the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Event shape discrimination of supersymmetry from large extra dimensions at a linear collider

The production of a charged lepton (e/mu) pair with a large missing energy at a linear collider is discussed as a means of distinguishing the minimal supersymmetry (MSSM) scenario from that with large extra dimensions (ADD) for parameter ranges where the total cross sections are comparable for both. Analyses in terms of event shape variables, specifically sphericity and thrust, are shown to enable a clear discrimination in this regard.

Looking for a Heavy Higgsino LSP in Collider and Dark Matter Experiments

A large part of the mSUGRA parameter space satisfying the WMAP constraint on the dark matter relic density corresponds to a higgsino LSP of mass $\simeq 1$ TeV. We find a promising signal for this LSP at CLIC, particularly with polarized electron and positron beams. One also expects a viable monochromatic $γ$-ray signal from its pair annihilation at the galactic center at least for cuspy DM halo profiles. All these results hold equally for the higgsino LSP of other SUSY models like the non-universal scalar or gaugino mass models and the so-called inverted hierarchy and more minimal supersymmetry models.

R-parity violation in split supersymmetry

In the recently proposed `split supersymmetry' scenario, the squark and slepton masses are allowed to be at a high scale while the gauginos and Higgsinos are within a TeV. We show that in a theory with broken R-parity, the parameter space of such a scenario allows a situation where the lightest neutralino is still stable on the cosmological scale and can be a dark matter candidate. We also separate the cases where (a) it may be invisible but not a dark matter candidate, or (b) it may decay showing a displaced vertex. It is also emphasized how the constraint on the simultaneous violation of baryon and lepton numbers gets relaxed in this scenario.

Gauge boson fusion as a probe of inverted hierarchies in supersymmetry

Supersymmetric scenarios with inverted mass hierarchy can be hard to observe at a hadron collider, particularly for the non-strongly interacting sector. We show how the production of stau-pairs via gauge boson fusion, along with hard jets in the high rapidity region, can be instrumental in uncovering the signatures of such scenarios. We demonstrate this both in a model-independent way and with reference to some specific, well-motivated models.

Slepton production from gauge boson fusion

We emphasise that charged slepton pairs produced via vector-boson fusion along with two high-mass, high-$p_T$ forward/backward jets (in two opposite hemispheres) can have a higher production cross-section for heavy slepton masses than that from conventional Drell-Yan production at a hadronic collider like the LHC. We analyse the signal and leading backgrounds in detail in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with conserved baryon and lepton numbers. Our investigation reveals that the mass reach of the vector-boson fusion channel is certainly an improvement over the scope of the Drell-Yan mode.

Bhabha Scattering with Radiated Gravitons at Linear Colliders

We study the process e+- e- -> e+- e- +- missing energy at a high-energy e+- e- collider, where the missing energy arises from the radiation of Kaluza-Klein gravitons in a model with large extra dimensions. It is shown that at a high-energy linear collider, this process can not only confirm the signature of such theories but can also sometimes be comparable in effectiveness to the commonly discussed channel e+- e- -> gamma +- missing energy, especially for a large number of extra dimensions and with polarized beams. We also suggest some ways of distinguishing the signals of a graviton tower from other types of new physics signals by combining data on our suggested channel with those on the photon-graviton channel.

Invisible charginos and neutralinos from gauge boson fusion : a way to explore anomaly mediation ?

We point out that vector boson fusion (VBF) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can lead to useful signals for charginos and neutralinos in supersymmetric scenarios where these particles are almost invisible. The proposed signals are just two forward jets with missing transverse energy. It is shown that in this way one can put by far the strongest constraint on the parameter space of a theory with anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) at the LHC. In addition, scenarios where the lightest neutralinos and charginos are Higgsino-like can give signals of the above type.

Signals of neutralinos and charginos from gauge boson fusion at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We point out that interesting signals of the non-strongly interacting sector of the supersymmetric standard model arise from the production of charginos and neutralinos via vector boson fusion (VBF) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In particular, if R-parity is violated, the hadronically quiet signals of charginos and neutralinos through direct production get considerably suppressed. We show that in such cases, the VBF channel can be useful in identifying this sector through clean and background-free final states.
