On the Boundary Regularity of Phase-Fields for Willmore's Energy

We demonstrate that Radon measures which arise as the limit of the Modica-Mortola measures associated to phase-fields with uniformly bounded diffuse area and Willmore energy may be singular at the boundary of a domain and discuss implications for practical applications. We furthermore give partial regularity results for the phase-fields $u_ε$ at the boundary in terms of boundary conditions and counterexamples without boundary conditions.

On the existence of minimisers for strain-gradient single-crystal plasticity

We prove the existence of minimisers for a family of models related to the single-slip-to-single-plane relaxation of single-crystal, strain-gradient elastoplasticity with $L^p$-hardening penalty. In these relaxed models, where only one slip-plane normal can be activated at each material point, the main challenge is to show that the energy of geometrically necessary dislocations is lower-semicontinuous along bounded-energy sequences which satisfy the single-plane condition, meaning precisely that this side condition should be preserved in the weak $L^p$-limit. This is done with the aid of an 'exclusion' lemma of Conti \& Ortiz, which essentially allows one to put a lower bound on the dislocation energy at interfaces of (single-plane) slip patches, thus precluding fine phase-mixing in the limit. Furthermore, using div-curl techniques in the spirit of Mielke \& Müller, we are able to show that the usual multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into plastic and elastic parts interacts with weak convergence and the single-plane constraint in such a way as to guarantee lower-semicontinuity of the (polyconvex) elastic energy, and hence the total elasto-plastic energy, given sufficient ($p>2$) hardening, thus delivering the desired result.

Optimization of the branching pattern in coherent phase transitions

Branching can be observed at the austenite-martensite interface of martensitic phase transformations. For a model problem, Kohn and Müller studied a branching pattern with optimal scaling of the energy with respect to its parameters. Here, we present finite element simulations that suggest a topologically different class of branching patterns and derive a novel, low dimensional family of patterns. After a geometric optimization within this family, the resulting pattern bears a striking resemblance to our simulation. The novel microstructure admits the same scaling exponents but results in a significantly lower upper energy bound.

Optimal energy scaling for a shear experiment in single-crystal plasticity with cross-hardening

Consideration is given to a non-convex variational model for a shear experiment in the framework of single-crystal linearised plasticity with infinite cross-hardening. The rectangular shear sample is clamped at each end, and is subjected to a prescribed horizontal or diagonal shear, modelled by an appropriate hard Dirichlet condition. We ask: how much energy is required to impose such a shear, and how does it depend on the aspect ratio? Assuming that just two slip systems are active, we show that there is a critical aspect ratio, above which the energy is strictly positive, and below which it is zero. Furthermore, in the respective regimes determined by the aspect ratio, we prove energy scaling bounds, expressed in terms of the amount of prescribed shear.
