A converged architecture for processing 32 Tbps of physics data in real-time at the LHCb experiment

The LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider has been upgraded to acquire an unprecedented 32 Tbps of particle-collision data to provide new insights in the High Energy Physics domain. The data produced by the detector is filtered in real-time to select interesting collisions. As part of the upgrade, a pre-filtering stage has been removed leading to a factor 40 increase in data rate. To deal with the high throughput demands of LHCb real-time data processing, we present an off-the-shelf network architecture using zero-copy techniques in conjunction with an efficient, fully-GPU-based filter. Our converged architecture is able to process the full 32 Tbps of particle-collision data in real-time, the highest in any physics experiment to date. Our result extends the reach of the LHCb physics programme and sets a new standard for real-time data processing at particle physics experiments.

A parallel algorithm for fast reconstruction of primary vertices on heterogeneous architectures

The physics programme of the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider requires an efficient and precise reconstruction of the particle collision vertices. The LHCb Upgrade detector relies on a fully software-based trigger with an online reconstruction rate of 30 MHz, necessitating fast vertex finding algorithms. This paper describes a new approach to vertex reconstruction developed for this purpose. The algorithm is based on cluster finding within a histogram of the particle trajectory projections along the beamline and on an adaptive vertex fit. Its implementations and optimisations on x86 and GPU architectures and its performance on simulated samples are also discussed.

The LHCb prompt charm triggers

The LHCb experiment has fully reconstructed close to 10^9 charm hadron decays---by far the world's largest sample. During the 2011-2012 running periods, the effective proton-proton beam crossing rate was 11-15 MHz while the rate at which events were written to permanent storage was 3-5 kHz. Prompt charm candidates (produced at the primary interaction vertex) were selected using a combination of exclusive and inclusive high level (software) triggers in conjunction with low level hardware triggers. The efficiencies, background rates, and possible biases of the triggers as they were implemented will be discussed, along with plans for the running at 13 TeV in 2015 and subsequently in the upgrade era.

Prospect of D0 mixing and CPV at LHCb

Precision measurements in charm physics offer a window into a unique sector of potential New Physics interactions. LHCb is poised to become a world leading experiment for charm studies, recording enormous statistics with a detector tailored for flavor physics. This article presents recent charm CPV and mixing studies from LHCb, including LHCb's first CP asymmetry measurement with 37 inverse pb of data collected in 2010. The difference of the CP asymmetries of D0 decays to the K-K+ and π-π+ final states is determined to be ΔA_{CP} = (-0.28 +/- 0.70 +/- 0.25)%. Significant updates to the material presented at the 4th International Workshop on Charm Physics are included.
