Implementing TD3 to train a Neural Network to fly a Quadcopter through an FPV Gate

Deep Reinforcement learning has shown to be a powerful tool for developing policies in environments where an optimal solution is unclear. In this paper, we attempt to apply Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradients to train a neural network to act as a velocity controller for a quadcopter. The quadcopter's objective is to quickly fly through a gate while avoiding crashing into the gate. We transfer our trained policy to the real world by deploying it on a quadcopter in a laboratory environment. Finally, we demonstrate that the trained policy is able to navigate the drone to the gate in the real world.

Initial Results from the LIGO Newtonian Calibrator

The precise calibration of the strain readout of the LIGO gravitational wave observatories is paramount to the accurate interpretation of gravitational wave events. This calibration is traditionally done by imparting a known force on the test masses of the observatory via radiation pressure. Here we describe the implementation of an alternative calibration scheme: the Newtonian Calibrator. This system uses a rotor consisting of both quadrupole and hexapole mass distributions to apply a time-varying gravitational force on one of the observatory's test masses. The force produced by this rotor can be predicted to $<1\%$ relative uncertainty and is well-resolved in the readout of the observatory. This system currently acts as a cross-check of the existing absolute calibration system.

Anomalous Hall Effect in perpendicularly magnetized Mn(_{3-x})Ga thin films

Mn$_{3-x}$Ga (x = 0.1, 0.4, 0.7) thin films on MgO and SrTiO$_3$ substrates were investigated with magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the film plane. An anomalous Hall-effect was observed for the tetragonal distorted lattice in the crystallographic D0$_{22}$ phase. The Hall resistivity $\varrho_{xy}$ was measured in a temperature range from 20 to 330 K. The determined skew scattering and side jump coefficients are discussed with regard to the film composition and used substrate and compared to the crystallographic and magnetic properties.

Fabrication of superconducting MgB2 thin films by magnetron co-sputtering on (001) MgO substrates

We fabricated superconducting MgB2 thin films on (001) MgO substrates. The samples were prepared by magnetron rf and dc co-sputtering on heated substrates. They were annealed ex-situ for one hour at temperatures between 450°C and 750°C. We will show that the substrate temperature during the sputtering process and the post annealing temperatures play a crucial role in forming MgB2 superconducting thin films. We achieved a critical onset temperature of 27.1K for a film thickness of 30nm. The crystal structures were measured by x-ray diffraction.
