Surface adsorbates suppress low-frequency noise for shallow nitrogen-vacancy centers

Shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising nanoscale quantum sensors, yet their coherence is strongly limited by surface-induced noise. Surface adsorbates are widely believed to be a major source of decoherence. Here, we test this assumption by characterizing shallow single NV centers under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions, where the diamond surface is kept free of adsorbates, and comparing their behavior to ambient conditions. Surprisingly, we observe a ~4x reduction in the Hahn echo coherence time T2 in UHV. By combining Hahn echo measurements in the single-quantum (SQ) and double-quantum (DQ) bases, we separate contributions from different noise sources and find that both electric and magnetic noise are enhanced in UHV. In contrast, T1 measurements reveal an increased DQ T1 in UHV, indicating suppressed electric field noise in the ~100 MHz frequency regime. These results point to a modification of the surface noise spectrum upon adsorbate removal, with different frequency regimes arising from distinct microscopic mechanisms. Specifically, we find that the low frequency noise is consistent with increased surface charge in UHV that can be compensated by surface adsorbates in ambient conditions. Our findings highlight a complex and previously underappreciated role of surface adsorbates in shaping the noise environment of shallow NV centers, with important implications for nanoscale quantum sensing.

An integrated ultrahigh vacuum cluster tool for diamond surface science and single nitrogen-vacancy center measurements

We present a custom-designed ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) cluster tool developed for studying shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, enabling in situ diamond surface preparation, characterization, and single NV center dynamics measurements within a single connected platform. The system combines a surface science chamber for controlled surface modification and analysis with a cryogenic confocal microscope chamber dedicated to NV spin and optical measurements. This integrated approach enables a direct correlation between diamond surface chemistry and the resulting NV spin and charge properties. The instrument provides a versatile platform for systematic studies of surface-induced decoherence mechanisms and charge dynamics for shallow NV centers, and establishes a pathway toward reproducible surface engineering for quantum sensing applications.

A defect in diamond with millisecond-scale spin relaxation time at room temperature

Spin defects in diamond are promising platforms for quantum sensing. The longest electron spin relaxation times ($T_1$) at room temperature for solid-state defects are observed in nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond, which can reach 6.67 ms, and substitutional nitrogen ("P1 centers") in diamond, which exhibit a $T_1$ of 2 ms. No other solid-state defect has exhibited millisecond-scale spin relaxation times at room temperature thus far. Here, we characterize the spin properties of the WAR5 defect in diamond with pulsed electron spin resonance. The observed $T_1$ is one of the longest for solid-state spin defects: 0.97(27) ms at room temperature and 14.38(19) min at 4 K. The observed coherence time ($T_2$) is 246(7) $\mu$s, which can be extended to 6.49(34) ms at 4 K with dynamical decoupling. Furthermore, we demonstrate optical spin polarization with a range of wavelengths from 405 nm to 500 nm and propose potential zero-phonon line candidates.

Voltage-tunable superconducting resonators: a platform for random access quantum memory

In quantum computing architectures, one important factor is the trade-off between the need to couple qubits to each other and to an external drive and the need to isolate them well enough in order to protect the information for an extended period of time. In the case of superconducting circuits, one approach is to utilize fixed frequency qubits coupled to coplanar waveguide resonators such that the system can be kept in a configuration that is relatively insensitive to noise. Here, we propose a scalable voltage-tunable quantum memory (QuMem) design concept compatible with superconducting qubit platforms. Our design builds on the recent progress in fabrication of Josephson field effect transistors (JJ-FETs) which use InAs quantum wells. The JJ-FET is incorporated into a tunable coupler between a transmission line and a high-quality resonator in order to control the overall inductance of the coupler. A full isolation of the high-quality resonator can be achieved by turning off the JJ-FET. This could allow for long coherence times and protection of the quantum information inside the storage cavity. The proposed design would facilitate the implementation of random access memory for storage of quantum information in between computational gate operations.

Simultaneous Measurement of Torsional Oscillator and NMR of Very Dilute 3He in Solid 4He

We have investigated the NMR properties of dilute 3He impurities in solid 4He contained in a torsional oscillator (TO) by the simultaneous measurement of the NMR and the torsional oscillator response of the so-called supersolid 4He. From measurements on samples with one hundred to a few hundred ppm of 3He, we have found three different states of 3He. The first is the homogeneously distributed isolated 3He atom in a solid matrix of 4He. The second is the 3He cluster in a homogeneous 4He matrix, which appears below the phase separation temperature of a solid mixture. The third is the 3He cluster in some nonuniform part of a 4He crystal. We find that 3He atoms contained in the third component remain in a nearby location even above the phase separation temperature. Based on the fact that even a ppm of 3He affects the supersolid response in a TO below and above the phase separation temperature, we propose that the nonuniform part of a crystal that holds the third type of 3He and thus has a higher local concentration of 3He plays an important role in the supersolid phenomenon in a TO.
