Thermoelectric Effects in Magnetic Nanostructures

We model and evaluate the Peltier and Seebeck effects in magnetic multilayer nanostructures by a finite-element theory of thermoelectric properties. We present analytical expressions for the thermopower and the current-induced temperature changes due to Peltier cooling/heating. The thermopower of a magnetic element is in general spin-polarized, leading to spin-heat coupling effects. Thermoelectric effects in spin valves depend on the relative alignment of the magnetization directions and are sensitive to spin-flip scattering as well as inelastic collisions in the normal metal spacer.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of FeAs based superconductors

The recently discovered high-temperature superconductivity in doped quaternary iron oxypnictides correlates experimentally with a magnetic instability. We have used first-principles calculations to determine a magnetic phase diagram of ReO$_{1-δ}$FeAs (Re=La--Dy) as a function of the doping $δ$, of the FeAs in-plane lattice constant $a$, and of the distance between the Fe and As planes, that is qualitatively consistent with recent experimental findings on the doping, internal (chemical) and external pressure dependence. The existence of a tricritical point (TCP) in the phase diagram suggests new ways of enhancing $T_c$.

Electronic structure induced reconstruction and magnetic ordering at the LaAlO$_3|$SrTiO$_3$ interface

Using local density approximation (LDA) calculations we predict GdFeO$_3$-like rotation of TiO$_6$ octahedra at the $n$-type interface between LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$. The narrowing of the Ti $d$ bandwidth which results means that for very modest values of $U$, LDA$+U$ calculations predict charge and spin ordering at the interface. Recent experimental evidence for magnetic interface ordering may be understood in terms of the close proximity of an antiferromagnetic insulating ground state to a ferromagnetic metallic excited state.

Substrate-induced bandgap in graphene on hexagonal boron nitride

We determine the electronic structure of a graphene sheet on top of a lattice-matched hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate using ab initio density functional calculations. The most stable configuration has one carbon atom on top of a boron atom, the other centered above a BN ring. The resulting inequivalence of the two carbon sites leads to the opening of a gap of 53 meV at the Dirac points of graphene and to finite masses for the Dirac fermions. Alternative orientations of the graphene sheet on the BN substrate generate similar band gaps and masses. The band gap induced by the BN surface can greatly improve room temperature pinch-off characteristics of graphene-based field effect transistors.

Thermal Spin-Transfer Torques in Magnetoelectronic Devices

We predict that the magnetization direction of a ferromagnet can be reversed by the spin-transfer torque accompanying spin-polarized thermoelectric heat currents. We illustrate the concept by applying a finite-element theory of thermoelectric transport in disordered magnetoelectronic circuits and devices to metallic spin valves. When thermalization is not complete, a spin heat accumulation vector is found in the normal metal spacer, i.e., a directional imbalance in the temperature of majority and minority spins.

Non-collinear Magnetoelectronics

The electron transport properties of hybrid ferromagnetic|normal metal structures such as multilayers and spin valves depend on the relative orientation of the magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic elements. Whereas the contrast in the resistance for parallel and antiparallel magnetizations, the so-called Giant Magnetoresistance, is relatively well understood for quite some time, a coherent picture for non-collinear magnetoelectronic circuits and devices has evolved only recently. We review here such a theory for electron charge and spin transport with general magnetization directions that is based on the semiclassical concept of a vector spin accumulation. In conjunction with first-principles calculations of scattering matrices many phenomena, e.g. the current-induced spin-transfer torque, can be understood and predicted quantitatively for different material combinations.

Spin accumulation and decay in magnetic Schottky barriers

The theory of charge and spin transport in forward-biased Schottky barriers reveals characteristic and experimentally relevant features. The conductance mismatch is found to enhance the current induced spin-imbalance in the semiconductor. The GaAs|MnAs interface resistance is obtained from an analysis of the magnetic field dependent Kerr rotation experiments by Stephens et al. and compared with first-principles calculations for intrinsic interfaces. With increasing current bias, the interface transparency grows towards the theoretical values, reflecting increasingly efficient Schottky barrier screening.

Dynamic ferromagnetic proximity effect in photoexcited semiconductors

The spin dynamics of photoexcited carriers in semiconductors in contact with a ferromagnet is treated theoretically and compared with time-dependent Faraday rotation experiments. The long time response of the system is found to be governed by the first tens of picoseconds in which the excited plasma interacts strongly with the intrinsic interface between semiconductor and ferromagnet in spite of the existence of a Schottky barrier in equilibrium.

Scattering theory of interface resistance in magnetic multilayers

The scattering theory of transport has to be applied with care in a diffuse environment. Here we discuss how the scattering matrices of heterointerfaces can be used to compute interface resistances of dirty magnetic multilayers. First principles calculations of these interface resistances agree well with experiments in the CPP (current perpendicular to the interface plane) configuration.

Semiclassical Concepts in Magnetoelectronics

Semiclassical theories of electron and spin transport in metallic magnetic structures are reviewed with emphasis on the role of disorder and electronic band structures in the current perpendicular to the interface plane (CPP) transport configuration.

Ballistic electron transport through magnetic domain walls

Electron transport limited by the rotating exchange-potential of domain walls is calculated in the ballistic limit for the itinerant ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. When realistic band structures are used, the domain wall magnetoresistance is enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to the results for previously studied two-band models. Increasing the pitch of a domain wall by confinement in a nano-structured point contact is predicted to give rise to a strongly enhanced magnetoresistance.
