Multichannel quantum-defect theory for slow atomic collisions

We present a multichannel quantum-defect theory for slow atomic collisions that takes advantages of the analytic solutions for the long-range potential, and both the energy and the angular-momentum insensitivities of the short-range parameters. The theory provides an accurate and complete account of scattering processes, including shape and Feshbach resonances, in terms of a few parameters such as the singlet and the triplet scattering lengths. As an example, results for $^{23}$Na-$^{23}$Na scattering are presented and compared close-coupling calculations.

Spontaneous dissociation of long-range Feshbach molecules

We study the spontaneous dissociation of diatomic molecules produced in cold atomic gases via magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances. We provide a universal formula for the lifetime of these molecules that relates their decay to the scattering length and the loss rate constant for inelastic spin relaxation. Our universal treatment as well as our exact coupled channels calculations for $^{85}$Rb dimers predict a suppression of the decay over several orders of magnitude when the scattering length is increased. Our predictions are in good agreement with recent measurements of the lifetime of $^{85}$Rb$_2$.

Molecular production in two-component atomic Fermi gases

We provide a practical approach to the molecular production via linear downward sweeps of Feshbach resonances in degenerate Fermi gases containing incoherent mixtures of two atomic spin states. We show that the efficiency of the association of atoms is determined just by the Landau-Zener parameter in addition to the density of the gas. Our approach of pairwise summation of the microscopic binary transition probabilities leads to an intuitive explanation for the observed saturation of the molecular production and recovers all atomic loss curves of C.A. Regal et al. [Nature (London) 427, 47 (2003)] as well as K.E. Strecker et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 080406 (2003)] without adjustable parameters.

Adiabatic association of ultracold molecules via magnetic field tunable interactions

We consider in detail the situation of applying a time dependent external magnetic field to a 87Rb atomic Bose-Einstein condensate held in a harmonic trap, in order to adiabatically sweep the interatomic interactions across a Feshbach resonance to produce diatomic molecules. To this end, we introduce a minimal two-body Hamiltonian depending on just five measurable parameters of a Feshbach resonance, which accurately determines all low energy binary scattering observables, in particular, the molecular conversion efficiency of just two atoms. Based on this description of the microscopic collision phenomena, we use the many-body theory of T. Koehler and K. Burnett [Phys. Rev. A 65, 033601 (2002)] to study the efficiency of the association of molecules in a 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate during a linear passage of the magnetic field strength across the 100 mT Feshbach resonance. We explore different, experimentally accessible, parameter regimes, and compare the predictions of Landau-Zener, configuration interaction, and two level mean field calculations with those of the microscopic many-body approach. Our comparative studies reveal a remarkable insensitivity of the molecular conversion efficiency with respect to both the details of the microscopic binary collision physics and the coherent nature of the Bose-Einstein condensed gas, provided that the magnetic field strength is varied linearly. We provide the reasons for this universality of the molecular production achieved by linear ramps of the magnetic field strength, and identify the Landau-Zener coefficient determined by F.H. Mies et al. [Phys. Rev. A 61, 022721 (2000)] as the main parameter that controls the efficiency.

Radio-Frequency Transitions on Weakly-Bound Ultracold Molecules

We show that radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly-bound molecules is a powerful and sensitive tool to probe molecular energy structure as well as atomic scattering properties. An analytic expression of the rf excitation lineshape is derived, which in general contains a bound-free component and a bound-bound component. In particular, we show that the bound-free process strongly depends on the sign of the scattering length in the outgoing channel and acquires a Fano-type profile near a Feshbach resonance. The derived lineshapes provide an excellent fit to both the numerical calculation and the experimental measurements.

Imaging of s and d partial-wave interference in quantum scattering of identical bosonic atoms

We report on the direct imaging of s and d partial-wave interference in cold collisions of atoms. Two ultracold clouds of Rb87 atoms were accelerated by magnetic fields to collide at energies near a d-wave shape resonance. The resulting halos of scattered particles were imaged using laser absorption. By scanning across the resonance we observed a marked evolution of the scattering patterns due to the energy dependent phase shifts for the interfering s and d waves. Since only two partial wave states are involved in the collision process the scattering yield and angular distributions have a simple interpretation in terms of a theoretical model.

Analysis of dynamical tunnelling experiments with a Bose-Einstein condensate

Dynamical tunnelling is a quantum phenomenon where a classically forbidden process occurs, that is prohibited not by energy but by another constant of motion. The phenomenon of dynamical tunnelling has been recently observed in a sodium Bose-Einstein condensate. We present a detailed analysis of these experiments using numerical solutions of the three dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the corresponding Floquet theory. We explore the parameter dependency of the tunnelling oscillations and we move the quantum system towards the classical limit in the experimentally accessible regime.

Ultracold collision properties of metastable alkaline-earth atoms

Ultra-cold collisions of spin-polarized 24Mg,40Ca, and 88Sr in the metastable 3P2 excited state are investigated. We calculate the long-range interaction potentials and estimate the scattering length and the collisional loss rate as a function of magnetic field. The estimates are based on molecular potentials between 3P2 alkaline-earth atoms obtained from ab initio atomic and molecular structure calculations. The scattering lengths show resonance behavior due to the appearance of a molecular bound state in a purely long-range interaction potential and are positive for magnetic fields below 50 mT. A loss-rate model shows that losses should be smallest near zero magnetic field and for fields slightly larger than the resonance field, where the scattering length is also positive.

Vortices in atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

The structure and stability of vortices in hybrid atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates is analyzed in the framework of a two-component Gross-Pitaevskii-type model that describes the stimulated Raman-induced photoassociation process. New types of topological vortex states are predicted to exist in the coherently coupled two-component condensates even without a trap, and their nontrivial dynamics in the presence of losses is demonstrated.

Subthermal linewidths in photoassociation spectra of cold alkaline earth atoms

Narrow s-wave features with subthermal widths are predicted for the ^1Pi_g photoassociation spectra of cold alkaline earth atoms. The phenomenon is explained by numerical and analytical calculations. These show that only a small subthermal range of collision energies near threshold contributes to the s-wave features that are excited when the atoms are very far apart. The resonances survive thermal averaging, and may be detectable for Ca cooled near the Doppler cooling temperature of the 4^1P <- 4^1S laser cooling transition.

Calculations of collisions between cold alkaline earth atoms in a weak laser field

We calculate the light-induced collisional loss of laser-cooled and trapped magnesium atoms for detunings up to 50 atomic linewidths to the red of the ^1S_0-^1P_1 cooling transition. We evaluate loss rate coefficients due to both radiative and nonradiative state-changing mechanisms for temperatures at and below the Doppler cooling temperature. We solve the Schrodinger equation with a complex potential to represent spontaneous decay, but also give analytic models for various limits. Vibrational structure due to molecular photoassociation is present in the trap loss spectrum. Relatively broad structure due to absorption to the Mg_2 ^1Sigma_u state occurs for detunings larger than about 10 atomic linewidths. Much sharper structure, especially evident at low temperature, occurs even at smaller detunings due to of Mg_2 ^1Pi_g absorption, which is weakly allowed due to relativistic retardation corrections to the forbidden dipole transition strength. We also perform model studies for the other alkaline earth species Ca, Sr, and Ba and for Yb, and find similar qualitative behavior as for Mg.

Theory of four-wave mixing of matter waves from a Bose-Einstein condensate

A recent experiment [Deng et al., Nature 398, 218(1999)] demonstrated four-wave mixing of matter wavepackets created from a Bose-Einstein condensate. The experiment utilized light pulses to create two high-momentum wavepackets via Bragg diffraction from a stationary Bose-Einstein condensate. The high-momentum components and the initial low momentum condensate interact to form a new momentum component due to the nonlinear self-interaction of the bosonic atoms. We develop a three-dimensional quantum mechanical description, based on the slowly-varying-envelope approximation, for four-wave mixing in Bose-Einstein condensates using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We apply this description to describe the experimental observations and to make predictions. We examine the role of phase-modulation, momentum and energy conservation (i.e., phase-matching), and particle number conservation in four-wave mixing of matter waves, and develop simple models for understanding our numerical results.

Collisions of cold magnesium atoms in a weak laser field

We use quantum scattering methods to calculate the light-induced collisional loss of laser-cooled and trapped magnesium atoms for detunings up to 30 atomic linewidths to the red of the 1S_0-1P_1 cooling transition. Magnesium has no hyperfine structure to complicate the theoretical studies. We evaluate both the radiative and nonradiative mechanisms of trap loss. The radiative escape mechanism via allowed 1Sigma_u excitation is dominant for more than about one atomic linewidth detuning. Molecular vibrational structure due to photoassociative transitions to bound states begins to appear beyond about ten linewidths detuning.
