Absorption of heat into a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction from a fluctuating environment

We study a diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction in an environment with intrinsic incoherent fluctuations which couple to the junction through an electromagnetic field. When the temperature of the junction differs from that of the environment, this coupling leads to an energy transfer between the two systems, taking the junction out of equilibrium. We describe this effect in the linear response regime and show that the change in the supercurrent induced by this coupling leads to qualitative changes in the current-phase relation and for a certain range of parameters, an increase in the critical current of the junction. Besides normal metals, similar effects can be expected also in other conducting weak links.

Signatures of Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the superconducting proximity effect in helical Luttinger liquids

We consider the superconducting proximity effect in a helical Luttinger liquid at the edge of a 2D topological insulator, and derive the low-energy Hamiltonian for an edge state tunnel-coupled to a s-wave superconductor. In addition to correlations between the left and right moving modes, the coupling can induce them inside a single mode, as the spin axis of the edge modes is not necessarily constant. This can be induced controllably in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells via the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and is a consequence of the 2D nature of the edge state wave function. The distinction of these two features in the proximity effect is also vital for the use of such helical modes in order to split Cooper-pairs. We discuss the consequent transport signatures, and point out a long-ranged feature in a dc conductance measurement that can be used to distinguish the two types of correlations present and to determine the magnitude of the Rashba interaction.

Linear AC Response of Diffusive SNS Junctions

We explore the behavior of the ac admittance of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions as the phase difference of the order parameters between the superconductors is varied. We find three characteristic regimes, defined by comparing the driving frequency $ω$ to the inelastic scattering rate $Γ$ and the Thouless energy $E_T$ of the junction (typically $\hbarΓ\ll E_T$). Only in the first regime $ω\ll Γ$ the usual picture of the kinetic inductance holds. We show that the ac admittance can be used to directly access some of the characteristic quantities of the SNS junctions, in particular the phase dependent energy minigap and the typically phase dependent inelastic scattering rate. Our results partially explain the recent measurements of the linear response properties of SNS Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) and predict a number of new effects.

Dephasing of spin and charge interference in helical Luttinger liquids

We consider a four-terminal Aharonov-Bohm interference setup formed out of two edges of a quantum spin Hall insulator, supporting helical Luttinger liquids (HLLs). We show that the temperature and bias dependence of the interference oscillations are linked to the amount of spin flips in tunneling between two HLLs which is a unique signature of a HLL. We predict that spin dephasing depends on the electron-electron (e-e) interaction but differently from the charge dephasing due to distinct dominant tunneling excitations. In contrast, in a spinful Luttinger liquid with SU(2) invariance, uncharged spin excitations can carry spin current without dephasing in spite of the presence of e-e interactions.

Electron-phonon coupling in single walled carbon nanotubes determined by shot noise

We have measured shot noise in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes of length L=1 $μ$m and have found strong suppression of noise with increasing voltage. We conclude that the coupling of electron and phonon baths at temperatures $T_e$ and $T_{ph}$ is described at intermediate bias (20 mV $<$ \vv $\lesssim $ 200 mV) by heat flow equation $P=ΣL (T_e^3-T_{ph}^3)$ where $Σ\sim 3 \cdot 10^{-9}$ W/mK$^3$ due to electron interaction with acoustic phonons, while at higher voltages optical phonon - electron interaction leads to $P =κ_{op} L [N (T_e)-N(T_{ph})]$ where $N(T)= 1/(\exp(\hbarΩ/k_BT)-1)$ with optical phonons energy $\hbar Ω$ and $κ_{op}=2 \cdot 10^{2}$ W/m.

Theory of Microwave-Assisted Supercurrent in Diffusive SNS Junctions

The observation of very large microwave-enhanced critical currents in superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions at temperatures well below the critical temperature of the electrodes has remained without a satisfactory theoretical explanation for more than three decades. Here we present a theory of the supercurrent in diffusive SNS junctions under microwave irradiation based on the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. We show that the enhancement of the critical current is due to the energy redistribution of the quasiparticles in the normal wire induced by the electromagnetic field. The theory provides predictions across a wide range of temperatures, frequencies, and radiation powers, both for the critical current and the current-phase relationship.

Phase-dependent noise correlations in normal-superconducting structures

We study nonequilibrium noise correlations in diffusive normal-superconducting structures in the presence of a supercurrent. We present a parametrization for the quasiclassical Green's function in the first order of the counting field $χ$. This we employ to obtain the voltage and phase dependence of cross and autocorrelations and to describe the role played by the setup geometry. We find that the low-voltage behavior of the effective charge $q_{\rm eff}$ describing shot noise is a result of a competition between anticorrelation of Andreev pairs due to proximity effect and the depression of the local density of states. Furthermore, we show that the noise correlations are independent of the sign of the supercurrent.

Nonequilibrium transport in mesoscopic multi-terminal SNS Josephson junctions

We report the results of several nonequilibrium experiments performed on superconducting/normal/superconducting (S/N/S) Josephson junctions containing either one or two extra terminals that connect to normal reservoirs. Currents injected into the junctions from the normal reservoirs induce changes in the electron energy distribution function, which can change the properties of the junction. A simple experiment performed on a 3-terminal sample demonstrates that quasiparticle current and supercurrent can coexist in the normal region of the S/N/S junction. When larger voltages are applied to the normal reservoir, the sign of the current-phase relation of the junction can be reversed, creating a "$π$-junction." We compare quantitatively the maximum critical currents obtained in 4-terminal $π$-junctions when the voltages on the normal reservoirs have the same or opposite sign with respect to the superconductors. We discuss the challenges involved in creating a "Zeeman" $π$-junction with a parallel applied magnetic field and show in detail how the orbital effect suppresses the critical current. Finally, when normal current and supercurrent are simultaneously present in the junction, the distribution function develops a spatially inhomogeneous component that can be interpreted as an effective temperature gradient across the junction, with a sign that is controllable by the supercurrent. Taken as a whole, these experiments illustrate the richness and complexity of S/N/S Josephson junctions in nonequilibrium situations.

Thermoelectric effects in superconducting proximity structures

Attaching a superconductor in good contact with a normal metal makes rise to a proximity effect where the superconducting correlations leak into the normal metal. An additional contact close to the first one makes it possible to carry a supercurrent through the metal. Forcing this supercurrent flow along with an additional quasiparticle current from one or many normal-metal reservoirs makes rise to many interesting effects. The supercurrent can be used to tune the local energy distribution function of the electrons. This mechanism also leads to finite thermoelectric effects even in the presence of electron-hole symmetry. Here we review these effects and discuss to which extent the existing observations of thermoelectric effects in metallic samples can be explained through the use of the dirty-limit quasiclassical theory.

Peltier effects in Andreev interferometers

The superconducting proximity effect is known to modify transport properties of hybrid normal--superconducting structures. In addition to changing electrical and thermal transport separately, it alters the thermoelectric effects. Changes to one off-diagonal element $L_{12}$ of the thermoelectric matrix $L$ have previously been studied via the thermopower, but the remaining coefficient $L_{21}$ which is responsible for the Peltier effect has received less attention. We discuss symmetry relations between $L_{21}$ and $L_{12}$ in addition to the Onsager reciprocity, and calculate Peltier coefficients for a specific structure. Similarly as for the thermopower, for finite phase differences of the superconducting order parameter, the proximity effect creates a Peltier effect significantly larger than the one present in purely normal-metal structures. This results from the fact that a nonequilibrium supercurrent carries energy.

Supercurrent-induced temperature gradient across a nonequilibrium SNS Josephson junction

Using tunneling spectroscopy, we have measured the local electron energy distribution function in the normal part of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction containing an extra lead to a normal reservoir. In the presence of simultaneous supercurrent and injected quasiparticle current, the distribution function exhibits a sharp feature at very low energy. The feature is odd in energy, and odd under reversal of either the supercurrent or the quasiparticle current direction. The feature represents an effective temperature gradient across the SNS Josephson junction that is controllable by the supercurrent.

Measuring non-Gaussian fluctuations through incoherent Cooper pair current

We study a Josephson junction (JJ) in the regime of incoherent Cooper pair tunneling, capacitively coupled to a nonequilibrium noise source. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the JJ are sensitive to the excess voltage fluctuations in the source, and can thus be used for wide-band noise detection. Under weak driving, the odd part of the I-V can be related to the second cumulant of noise, whereas the even part is due to the third cumulant. After calibration, one can measure the Fano factors for the noise source, and get information about the frequency dependence of the noise.

Thermopower in Andreev interferometers

We examine the thermopower Q of a mesoscopic normal-metal (N) wire in contact to superconducting (S) segments and show that even with electron-hole symmetry, Q may become finite due to the presence of supercurrents. Moreover, we show how the dominant part of Q can be directly related to the equilibrium supercurrents in the structure. We also discuss the thermopower arising due to an anomalous kinetic coefficient which is finite in the presence of supercurrent and in some situations gives the dominant contribution. In general, a finite thermopower appears both between the N reservoirs and the superconductors, and between the N reservoirs themselves. The latter, however, strongly depends on the geometrical symmetry of the structure. The paper includes a detailed analytical derivation of the results and an exact numerical solution of the quasiclassical equations in a few sample geometries.
