Coprime automorphisms of profinite groups and the commuting probability of Sylow subgroups

Given two (closed) subgroups H, K of a profinite group G, we write Pr(H,K) for the probability that a random pair from HxK commutes. Here we are concerned with profinite groups containing Sylow subgroups P, Q such that Pr(P,Q) > 0. First, we show that if G is a profinite group containing a Sylow 2-subgroup L and a Sylow p-subgroup P , where p is odd, such that Pr(L,P) is positive, then G is virtually pro-p-soluble (Theorem 1.1). Then we handle similar issues for profinite groups admitting coprime automorphisms. In particular, we prove that if G is a profinite group admitting a group of coprime automorphisms A such that there is a Sylow 2-subgroup L of C_G(A) and an A-invariant Sylow p-subgroup P of G, where p is odd, for which Pr(L,P) > 0, then G is virtually pro-p-soluble (Theorem 1.3). On the other hand, if we only have Pr([L,A],[P,A]) > 0, then [G,A] need not be virtually pro-p-soluble. We show that in this case [G,A] has an open normal subgroup of non-p-soluble length at most 1 (Theorem 1.4). Furthermore, if P is an A-invariant Sylow p-subgroup of G such that Pr([P, A],[P, A]^x) > 0 for every x in G, then [G,A] has an open normal subgroup of non-p-soluble length at most 1 (Theorem 1.5).

Rank properties of commutators in finite groups

For a subset $S$ of a finite group $G$, let $I_G(S)$ denote the set of commutators $[g,x]=g^{-1}g^x$, where $g\in G$ and $x\in S$. Suppose that a finite group $G$ has a Carter subgroup $C$, that is, a nilpotent subgroup containing its normalizer. Suppose that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(C)$ is $r$-generated. We prove that if $G$ is soluble, then the derived subgroup $G'$ has $r$-bounded rank. We produce examples showing that the solubility condition cannot be dropped. For any finite group, we prove that the rank of $G'$ is $(r,l)$-bounded, where $l$ is the maximum rank of composition factors of $G$ isomorphic to $PSL_2(q)$ for $q\equiv 7\,(\operatorname{mod}8)$. We also prove in the general case that $G'$ has $r$-bounded rank under the additional condition that for any $x\in I_G(C)$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(x)$ is $r$-generated. The proofs rely on the classification of finite simple groups, using which we prove that if a finite simple group $G$ has an element $x$ of prime order $p$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(x)$ is $r$-generated, then $G$ has $r$-bounded (Prüfer) rank or is isomorphic to $PSL_2(q)$ with $q \equiv 3\,(\operatorname{mod}4)$ when $p=2$, or to $PSL_2(q)$ with $q \equiv -1\,(\operatorname{mod} p)$ when $p\ne 2$.

Relative commuting probability and BFC-type results for finite skew braces

We develop a probabilistic approach to the structure of finite skew left braces, motivated both by classical commuting probability in finite group theory and by the role of skew left braces in the study of set-theoretic solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation. We introduce relative commuting probability for skew left braces and establish analogues of several classical structural results, including relative BFC-type theorems. For natural classes of finite skew left braces, we show that a positive lower bound for the commuting probability forces the existence of a large section which is trivial up to bounded subgroups. We also study the probability that two elements generate a trivial sub-skew brace and a Sylow-local version of commuting probability, obtaining further structural consequences. Finally, we introduce a commuting probability for finite non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation. Under natural hypotheses on the associated structure skew brace $G(X,r)$, a positive lower bound for this probability yields a bound on $|G(X,r):\Soc(G(X,r))|$ depending only on the probability and on $|X|$.

Involutory automorphisms of finite groups of odd order

For a finite group $G$ we write $γ_\infty(G)$ to denote the nilpotent residual of $G$, that is, the intersection of all terms of the lower central series. The following theorem is proved: Let $G$ be a finite group of odd order admitting an involutory automorphism $φ$ such that $G=[G,φ]$ and suppose that $γ_\infty(C_G(φ))$ has order $m$. Then the order of $γ_\infty(G')$ is bounded by a function depending only on $m$. This complements several earlier results on groups of odd order admitting involutory automorphisms.

On finite groups containing an element whose Engel sink is small

For an element $g$ of a group $G$, a right Engel sink of $g$ is a subset of $G$ containing all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g ,x],x],\dots ,x]$ for all $x\in G$. A left Engel sink of $g$ is a subset of $G$ containing all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x ,g ],g ],\dots ,g]$ for all $x\in G$. Using the classification of finite simple groups we prove that if a finite group $G$ has an element $g$ such that $G=[G,g]$, then the order of $G$ is bounded in terms of a right Engel sink of $g$, as well as in terms of a left Engel sink of $g$. Earlier Guralnick and Tracey proved this in the case where $g$ is an involution without using the classification.

New variations on the theme of Baer's theorem

Let $γ_s(G)$ and $Z_s(G)$ denote the $s$-th terms of the lower and upper central series of a group $G$, respectively. A classical theorem by R. Baer states that if $Z_s(G)$ has finite index $n$ in $G$, then $γ_{s+1}(G)$ is also finite. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a generalized soluble group such that the quotient $γ_s(G)/(γ_s(G) \cap Z_t(G))$ has finite rank $r$ for some $s,t$, then the rank of $γ_{s+t}(G)$ is finite and $(r,s,t)$-bounded. Moreover, a corresponding result replacing the finite-rank assumption by the condition to be a Chernikov group of bounded size is also obtained. These results extend recent generalizations of the classical Baer's theorem.

Finite groups with high commuting probability for Sylow subgroups

Given two subsets $X,Y$ of a finite group $G$, we write $\Pr(X,Y)$ for the probability that random elements $x \in X$ and $y \in Y$ commute. If $X,Y$ are subgroups, we denote by $\Pr^*(X,Y)$ the maximum real number $ε$ with the property that for every pair of distinct primes $p\inπ(X)$ and $q\inπ(Y)$ there is a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ of $X$ and a Sylow $q$-subgroup $Q$ of $Y$ such that $\Pr(P,Q) \geq ε$. In this paper we handle, among other things, finite groups $G$ with high probabilities $\Pr^*(T,G)$, where $T$ is either a term of the lower central series of $G$ or the generalized Fitting subgroup $F_i^*(G)$. Our main results show that the structure of such groups is similar, in some precise sense, to that of nilpotent groups.

Rank type conditions on commutators in finite groups

For a subgroup $S$ of a group $G$, let $I_G(S)$ denote the set of commutators $[g,s]=g^{-1}g^s$, where $g\in G$ and $s\in S$, so that $[G,S]$ is the subgroup generated by $I_G(S)$. We prove that if $G$ is a $p$-soluble finite group with a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We produce examples showing that such a result does not hold without the assumption of $p$-solubility. Instead, we prove that if a finite group $G$ has a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that (a) any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ is $r$-generated, and (b) for any $x\in I_G(P)$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(x)$ is $r$-generated, then $[G,P]$ has $r$-bounded rank. We also prove that if $G$ is a finite group such that for every prime $p$ dividing $|G|$ for any Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$, any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(P)$ can be generated by $r$ elements, then the derived subgroup $G'$ has $r$-bounded rank. As an important tool in the proofs, we prove the following result, which is also of independent interest: if a finite group $G$ admits a group of coprime automorphisms $A$ such that any subgroup generated by a subset of $I_G(A)$ is $r$-generated, then the rank of $[G,A]$ is $r$-bounded.

Local--global generation property of commutators in finite $π$-soluble groups

For a group $A$ acting by automorphisms on a group $G$, let $I_G(A)$ denote the set of commutators $[g,a]=g^{-1}g^a$, where $g\in G$ and $a\in A$, so that $[G,A]$ is the subgroup generated by $I_G(A)$. We prove that if $A$ is a $π$-group of automorphisms of a $π$-soluble finite group $G$ such that any subset of $I_G(A)$ generates a subgroup that can be generated by $r$ elements, then the rank of $[G,A]$ is bounded in terms of $r$. Examples show that such a result does not hold without the assumption of $π$-solubility. Earlier we obtained this type of results for groups of coprime automorphisms and for Sylow $p$-subgroups of $p$-soluble groups.

Length parameters of finite groups and their Hall subgroups

Let $π$ be a set of primes containing $2$ and an odd prime $p$. It is proved that if a finite group $G$ has a Hall $π$-subgroup $H$, then the non-$p$-soluble length of $G$ is bounded above by the generalized Fitting height of $H$. The proof uses the fact, obtained in [4] using the classification of finite simple groups, that a finite simple group of order divisible by $p$ cannot have a nilpotent Hall $\{2,p\}$-subgroup. As a corollary, it is proved that if in addition $H$ is soluble, then the non-$p$-soluble length of $G$ is bounded above by $2l_2(H)+1$, where $l_2(H)$ is the $2$-length of $H$.

Profinite groups with restricted centralizers of powers

A group $G$ is said to have restricted centralizers if for every $x\in G$ the centralizer $C_G(x)$ either is finite or has finite index in $G$. Shalev showed that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is virtually abelian. Here we take interest in profinite groups $G$ for which there is an integer $n$ such that $C_G(x^n)$ is either finite or open whenever $x\in G$. It is shown that such a group $G$ has an open normal subgroup $T$ with the property that $G/Z(T)$ has finite exponent.

Coprime commutators in profinite groups

By a coprime commutator in a profinite group $G$ we mean any element of the form $[x, y]$, where $x,y\in G$ and $(|x|,|y|)=1$. It is well-known that the subgroup generated by the coprime commutators of $G$ is precisely the pronilpotent residual $γ_\infty(G)$. There are several recent works showing that finiteness conditions on the set of coprime commutators have strong impact on the properties of $γ_\infty(G)$ and, more generally, on the structure of $G$. In this paper we show that if the set of coprime commutators of a profinite group $G$ is covered by countably many procyclic subgroups, then $γ_\infty(G)$ is finite-by-procyclic. In particular, it follows that $G$ is finite-by-pronilpotent-by-abelian.

On Chernikov-by-nilpotent groups

Let $γ_k=[x_1,\dots,x_k]$ be the $k$-th lower central group-word. Given a group $G$, we write $X_k(G)$ for the set of $γ_k$-values and $γ_k(G)$ for the $k$-th term of the lower central of $G$. This paper deals with groups in which $\langle g^{X_k(G)} \rangle$ is a Chernikov group of size at most $(m,n)$ for all $g\in G$. The main result is that $γ_{k+1}(G)$ is a Chernikov group and its size is $(k,m,n)$-bounded.

Finite groups, commuting probability, and coprime automorphisms

Given two subgroups $H,K$ of a finite group $G$, the probability that a pair of random elements from $H$ and $K$ commutes is denoted by $Pr(H,K)$. Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits a group of coprime automorphisms $A$ and let $ε>0$. We show that, if for any distinct primes $p,q\inπ(G)$ there is an $A$-invariant Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ and an $A$-invariant Sylow $q$-subgroup $Q$ of $G$ for which $Pr([P,A],[Q,A])\geε$, then $F_2([G,A])$ has $ε$-bounded index in $[G,A]$ (Theorem 1.2). Here $F_2(K)$ stands for the second term of the upper Fitting seris of a group $K$. We also show that, if $G=[G,A]$ and for any prime $p$ dividing the order of $G$ there is an $A$-invariant Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ such that $\Pr([P,A], [P,A]^x)\geqε$ for all $x\in G$, then $G$ is bounded-by-abelian-by-bounded (Theorem 1.4).

Finite and profinite groups with small Engel sinks of p-elements

A (left) Engel sink of an element g of a group G is a subset containing all sufficiently long commutators [...[[x,g],g],...,g], where x ranges over G. We prove that if p is a prime and G a finite group in which, for some positive integer m, every p-element has an Engel sink of cardinality at most m, then G has a normal subgroup N such that G/N is a p'-group and the index [N:O_p(G)] is bounded in terms of m only. Furthermore, if G is a profinite group in which every p-element possesses a finite Engel sink, then G has a normal subgroup N such that N is virtually pro-p while G/N is a pro-p' group.

Commuting probability for conjugate subgroups of a finite group

Given two subgroups H,K of a finite group G, the probability that a pair of random elements from H and K commutes is denoted by \pr(H,K). We address the following question. Let P be a p-subgroup of a finite group G and assume that \pr(P,P^x)\geq\e>0 for every x\in G. Is the order of P modulo O_p(G) bounded in terms of e only? With respect to this question, we establish several positive results but show that in general the answer is negative. In particular, we prove that if the composition factors of G which are isomorphic to simple groups of Lie type in characteristic p, have Lie rank at most n, then the order of P modulo O_p(G) is bounded in terms of n and e only. If P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G, then the order of P modulo O_p(G) is bounded in terms e only. Some other results of similar flavour are established. We also show that if \pr(P_1,P_2)>0 for every two Sylow p-subgroups P_1,P_2 of a profinite group G, then O_{p,p'}(G) is open in G.

Groups with finitely many long commutators of maximal order

Given a group $G$ and elements $x_1,x_2,\dots, x_\ell\in G$, the commutator of the form $[x_1,x_2,\dots, x_\ell]$ is called a commutator of length $\ell$. The present paper deals with groups having only finitely many commutators of length $\ell$ of maximal order. We establish the following results. Let $G$ be a residually finite group with finitely many commutators of length $\ell$ of maximal order. Then $G$ contains a subgroup $M$ of finite index such that $γ_\ell(M)=1$. Moreover, if $G$ is finitely generated, then $γ_\ell(G)$ is finite. Let $\ell,m,n,r$ be positive integers and $G$ an $r$-generator group with at most $m$ commutators of length $\ell$ of maximal order $n$. Suppose that either $n$ is a prime power, or $n=p^αq^β$, where $p$ and $q$ are odd primes, or $G$ is nilpotent. Then $γ_\ell(G)$ is finite of $(m,\ell,r)$-bounded order and there is a subgroup $M\le G$ of $(m,\ell,r)$-bounded index such that $γ_\ell(M)=1$.

On finite groups with bounded conjugacy classes of commutators

In 1954 B. H. Neumann discovered that if $G$ is a group in which all conjugacy classes have finite cardinality at most $m$, then the derived group $G'$ is finite of $m$-bounded order. In 2018 G. Dierings and P. Shumyatsky showed that if $|x^G| \le m$ for any commutator $x\in G$, then the second derived group $G''$ is finite and has $m$-bounded order. This paper deals with finite groups in which $|x^G|\le m$ whenever $x\in G$ is a commutator of prime power order. The main result is that $G''$ has $m$-bounded order.
