Quantum circuits based on coded qubits encoded in chirality of electron spin complexes in triple quantum dots

We present a theory of quantum circuits based on logical qubits encoded in chirality of electron spin complexes in lateral gated semiconductor triple quantum dot molecules with one electron spin in each dot. Using microscopic Hamiltonian we show how to initialize, coherently control and measure the quantum state of a chirality based coded qubit using static in-plane magnetic field and voltage tuning of individual dots. The microscopic model of two interacting coded qubits is established and mapped to an Ising Hamiltonian, resulting in conditional two-qubit phase gate.

Macroscopic quantum state in a semiconductor device

We show how nanostructuring of a metallic gate on a field-effect transistor (FET) can lead to a macroscopic, robust and voltage controlled quantum state in the electron channel of a FET. A chain of triple quantum dot molecules created by gate structure realizes a spin-half Heisenberg chain with spin-spin interactions alternating between ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic. The quantum state is a semiconductor implementation of an integer spin-one antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with a unique correlated ground state and a finite energy gap, originally conjectured by Haldane.

Theory of exciton fine structure in semiconductor quantum dots: quantum dot anisotropy and lateral electric field

Theory of exciton fine structure in semiconductor quantum dots and its dependence on quantum dot anisotropy and external lateral electric field is presented. The effective exciton Hamiltonian including long range electron-hole exchange interaction is derived within the k*p effective mass approximation (EMA). The exchange matrix elements of the Hamiltonian are expressed explicitly in terms of electron and hole envelope functions. The matrix element responsible for the "bright" exciton splitting is identified and analyzed. An excitonic fine structure for a model quantum dot with quasi- two-dimensional anisotropic harmonic oscillator (2DLAHO) confining potential is analyzed as a function of the shape anisotropy, size and applied lateral electric field.

Stability Diagram of a Few-Electron Triple Dot

Quantum dots are considered building blocks for future quantum information circuits. We present here experimental results on a quantum dot circuit consisting of three quantum dots with controlled electron numbers down to one per dot and tunable coupling. We experimentally map out for the first time the stability diagram of the triatomic system and reveal the existence of quadruple points, a signature of the three dots being in resonance. In their vicinity we observe a surprising effect, a 'cloning' of charge transfer transitions related to charge and spin reconfigurations. The experimental results are reproduced by equivalent circuit analysis and Hubbard models.

Spin transitions induced by a magnetic field in quantum dot molecules

We present a theoretical study of magnetic field driven spin transitions of electrons in coupled lateral quantum dot molecules. A detailed numerical study of spin phases of artificial molecules composed of two laterally coupled quantum dots with N=8 electrons is presented as a function of magnetic field, Zeeman energy, and the detuning using real space Hartree-Fock Configuration Interaction (HF-CI) technique. A microscopic picture of quantum Hall ferromagnetic phases corresponding to zero and full spin polarization at filling factors $ν=2$ and $ν=1$, and ferrimagnetic phases resulting from coupling of the two dots, is presented.

Electronic States of Magnetic Quantum Dots

We study quantum states of electrons in magnetically doped quantum dots as a function of exchange coupling between electron and impurity spins, the strength of Coulomb interaction, confining potential, and the number of electrons. The magnetic phase diagram of quantum dots, doped with a large number of magnetic Mn impurities, can be described by the energy gap in the spectrum of electrons and the mean field electron-Mn exchange coupling. A competition between these two parameters leads to a transition between spin-unpolarized and spin-polarized states, in the absence of applied magnetic field. Tuning the energy gap by electrostatic control of nonparabolicity of the confining potential can enable control of magnetization even at the fixed number of electrons. We illustrate our findings by directly comparing Mn-doped quantum dots with parabolic and Gaussian confining potential.

Voltage Induced Hidden Symmetry and Photon Entanglement Generation in a Single, Site-Selected Quantum Dot

Present proposals for the realisation of entangled photon pair sources using the radiative decay of the biexciton in semiconductor quantum dots are limited by the need to enforce degeneracy of the two intermediate, single exciton states. We show how this requirement is lifted if the biexciton binding energy can be tuned to zero and we demonstrate this unbinding of the biexciton in a single, pre-positioned InAs quantum dot subject to a lateral electric field. Full Configuration-Interaction calculations are presented that reveal how the biexciton is unbound through manipulation of the electron-hole Coulomb interaction and the consequent introduction of Hidden Symmetry.

LCHO-CI method for the voltage control of exchange interaction in gated lateral quantum dot networks

We present a computational LCHO-CI approach allowing for the simulation of exchange interactions in gated lateral quantum dot networks. The approach is based on single-particle states calculated using a linear combination of harmonic orbitals (LCHO) of each of the dots, and a configuration interaction (CI) approach to the interacting electron problem. The LCHO-CI method is applied to a network of three quantum dots with one electron spin per dot, and a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian is derived. The manipulation of spin states of a three-spin molecule by applying bias to one of the dots is demonstrated and related to the bias dependence of effective exchange interaction parameters.

Topological Hunds rules and the electronic properties of a triple lateral quantum dot molecule

We analyze theoretically and experimentally the electronic structure and charging diagram of three coupled lateral quantum dots filled with electrons. Using the Hubbard model and real-space exact diagonalization techniques we show that the electronic properties of this artificial molecule can be understood using a set of topological Hunds rules. These rules relate the multi-electron energy levels to spin and the inter-dot tunneling $t$, and control charging energies. We map out the charging diagram for up to N=6 electrons and predict a spin-polarized phase for two holes. The theoretical charging diagram is compared with the measured charging diagram of the gated triple-dot device.

Tailoring Magnetism in Quantum Dots

We study magnetism in magnetically doped quantum dots as a function of confining potential, particle numbers, temperature, and strength of Coulomb interactions. We explore possibility of tailoring magnetism by controlling the electron-electron Coulomb interaction, without changing the number of particles. The interplay of strong Coulomb interactions and quantum confinement leads to enhanced inhomogeneous magnetization which persist at higher temperatures than in the non-interacting case. The temperature of the onset of magnetization can be controlled by changing the number of particles as well as by modifying the quantum confinement and the strength of Coulomb interactions. We predict a series of electronic spin transitions which arise from the competition between the many-body gap and magnetic thermal fluctuations.

Voltage-controlled coded qubit based on electron spin

We design and analyze a solid state qubit based on electron spin and controlled by electrical means. The coded qubit is composed of a three-electron complex in three tunable gated quantum dots. The two logical states of a qubit, |0L> and |1L>, reside in a degenerate subspace of total spin S=1/2 states. We demonstrate how applying voltages to specific gates changes the one-electron properties of the structure, and show how electron-electron interaction translates these changes into the manipulation of the two lowest energy states of the three-electron complex.

Real Space Hartree-Fock Configuration Interaction Method For Complex Lateral Quantum Dot Molecules

We present unrestricted Hartree Fock method coupled with configuration interaction (CI) method (URHF-CI) suitable for the calculation of ground and excited states of large number of electrons localized by complex gate potentials in quasi-two-dimensional quantum dot molecules. The method employs real space finite difference method, incorporating strong magnetic field, for the calculating of single particle states. The Hartree-Fock method is employed for the calculation of direct and exchange interaction contribution to the ground state energy. The effects of correlations are included in energies and directly in the many-particle wavefunctions via configuration interaction (CI) method using a limited set of excitations above the Fermi level. The URHF-CI method and its performance are illustrated on the example of ten electrons confined in a two-dimensional quantum dot molecule.

Quantum Hall Ferrimagnetism in lateral quantum dot molecules

We demonstrate the existance of ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic phases in a spin phase diagram of coupled lateral quantum dot molecules in the quantum Hall regime. The spin phase diagram is determined from Hartree-Fock Configuration Interaction method as a function of electron numbers N, magnetic field B, Zeeman energy, and tunneling barrier height. The quantum Hall ferrimagnetic phase corresponds to spatially imbalanced spin droplets resulting from strong inter-dot coupling of identical dots. The quantum Hall ferromagnetic phases correspond to ferromagnetic coupling of spin polarization at filling factors between $ν=2$ and $ν=1$.

Theory of a two-level artificial molecule in laterally coupled quantum Hall droplets

We present a theory of laterally coupled quantum Hall droplets with electron numbers (N1,N2) at filling factor $ν=2$. We show that the edge states of each droplet are tunnel coupled and form a two-level artificial molecule. By populating the edge states with one electron each a two electron molecule is formed. We predict the singlet-triplet transitions of the effective two-electron molecule as a function of the magnetic field, the number of electrons, and confining potential using the configuration interaction method (CI) coupled with the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (URHF) basis. In addition to the singlet-triplet transitions of a 2 electron molecule involving edge states, triplet transitions involving transfer of electrons to the center of individual dots exist for $(N1 \geq 5, N2 \geq 5)$.

Quantum Hall droplets in coupled lateral quantum dots

We present a theory and Coulomb and Spin Blockade spectroscopy experiments on quantum Hall droplets with controlled electron numbers (N1,N2) in laterally coupled gated quantum dots. The theory is based on the configuration interaction method (CI) coupled with the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (URHF) basis. It allows us to calculate the magnetic field evolution of ground and excited states of coupled quantum dots with large electron numbers. The method is applied to the spin transitions in the (5,5) droplet. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the creation of the (5,5) droplet and its Spin Blockade spectra.

Atomistic theory of electronic and optical properties of InAs/InP self-assembled quantum dots on patterned substrates

We report on a atomistic theory of electronic structure and optical properties of a single InAs quantum dot grown on InP patterned substrate. The spatial positioning of individual dots using InP nano-templates results in a quantum dot embedded in InP pyramid. The strain distribution of a quantum dot in InP pyramid is calculated using the continuum elasticity theory. The electron and valence hole single-particle states are calculated using atomistic effective-bond-orbital model with second nearest-neighbor interactions, coupled to strain via Bir-Pikus Hamiltonian. The optical properties are determined by solving many-exciton Hamiltonian for interacting electron and hole complexes using the configuration-interaction method. The effect of positioning of quantum dots using nanotemplate on their optical spectra is determined by a comparison with dots on unpatterned substrates, and with experimental results. The possibility of tuning the quantum dot properties with varying the nano-template is explored.

Multiband theory of multi-exciton complexes in self-assembled quantum dots

We report on a multiband microscopic theory of many-exciton complexes in self-assembled quantum dots. The single particle states are obtained by three methods: single-band effective-mass approximation, the multiband $k\cdot p$ method, and the tight-binding method. The electronic structure calculations are coupled with strain calculations via Bir-Pikus Hamiltonian. The many-body wave functions of $N$ electrons and $N$ valence holes are expanded in the basis of Slater determinants. The Coulomb matrix elements are evaluated using statically screened interaction for the three different sets of single particle states and the correlated $N$-exciton states are obtained by the configuration interaction method. The theory is applied to the excitonic recombination spectrum in InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots. The results of the single-band effective-mass approximation are successfully compared with those obtained by using the of $k\cdot p$ and tight-binding methods.

Configuration interaction method for Fock-Darwin states

We present a configuration interaction method optimized for Fock-Darwin states of two-dimensional quantum dots with an axially symmetric, parabolic confinement potential subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. The optimization explicitly accounts for geometrical and dynamical symmetries of the Fock-Darwin single-particle states and for many-particle symmetries associated with the center-of-mass motion and with the total spin. This results in a basis set of reduced size and improved accuracy. The numerical results compare well with the quantum Monte Carlo and stochastic variational methods. The method is illustrated by the evolution of a strongly correlated few-electron droplet in a magnetic field in the regime of the fractional quantum Hall effect.
