Hamiltonian Evolutionary Games

We introduce a class of o.d.e.'s that generalizes to polymatrix games the replicator equations on symmetric and asymmetric games. We also introduce a new class of Poisson structures on the phase space of these systems, and characterize the corresponding subclass of Hamiltonian polymatrix replicator systems. This extends known results for symmetric and asymmetric replicator systems.

r-Regularity

We provide a characterization of r-regular sets in terms of the Lipschitz regularity of normal vector fields to the boundary.

Ergodicity of polygonal slap maps

Polygonal slap maps are piecewise affine expanding maps of the interval obtained by projecting the sides of a polygon along their normals onto the perimeter of the polygon. These maps arise in the study of polygonal billiards with non-specular reflections laws. We study the absolutely continuous invariant probabilities of the slap maps for several polygons, including regular polygons and triangles. We also present a general method for constructing polygons with slap maps having more than one ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability.

A Class of Morse Functions on Flag Manifolds

Given a positive definite symmetric matrix in one of the groups SL(n, R) or Sp(n, R), we analyse its actions on Flag Manifolds, proving these are diffeomorphisms which admit as strict Lyapunov functions a special class of quadratic functions, all of them Z2 -perfect Morse functions. Stratifications on the Flag Manifolds are provided which are invariant under both the diffeomorphisms and the gradient flows of the Lyapunov functions.

Continuity of the Lyapunov exponents for quasiperiodic cocycles

Consider the Banach manifold of real analytic linear cocycles with values in the general linear group of any dimension and base dynamics given by a Diophantine translation on the circle. We prove a precise higher dimensional Avalanche Principle and use it in an inductive scheme to show that the Lyapunov spectrum blocks associated to a gap pattern in the Lyapunov spectrum of such a cocycle are locally Holder continuous. Moreover, we show that all Lyapunov exponents are continuous everywhere in this Banach manifold, irrespective of any gap pattern in their spectra. These results also hold for Diophantine translations on higher dimensional tori, albeit with a loss in the modulus of continuity of the Lyapunov spectrum blocks.

Positive Lyapunov exponents for higher dimensional quasiperiodic cocycles

We consider an m-dimensional analytic cocycle with underlying dynamics given by an irrational translation on the circle. Assuming that the d-dimensional upper left corner of the cocycle is typically large enough, we prove that the d largest Lyapunov exponents associated with this cocycle are bounded away from zero. The result is uniform relative to certain measurements on the matrix blocks forming the cocycle. As an application of this result, we obtain nonperturbative (in the spirit of Sorets-Spencer theorem) positive lower bounds of the nonnegative Lyapunov exponents for various models of band lattice Schroedinger operators.

SRB measures for hyperbolic polygonal billiards

We prove that polygonal billiards with contracting reflection laws exhibit hyperbolic attractors with countably many ergodic SRB measures. These measures are robust under small perturbations of the reflection law, and the tables for which they exist form a generic set in the space of all polygons. Specific polygonal tables are studied in detail.

Chaos in the square billiard with a modified reflection law

The purpose of this paper is to study the dynamics of a square billiard with a non-standard reflection law such that the angle of reflection of the particle is a linear contraction of the angle of incidence. We present numerical and analytical arguments that the nonwandering set of this billiard decomposes into three invariant sets, a parabolic attractor, a chaotic attractor and a set consisting of several horseshoes. This scenario implies the positivity of the topological entropy of the billiard, a property that is in sharp contrast with the integrability of the square billiard with the standard reflection law.

Rank of Stably Dissipative Graphs

For the class of stably dissipative Lotka-Volterra systems we prove that the rank of its defining matrix, which is the dimension of the associated invariant foliation, is completely determined by the system's graph.

Agent-based Ecological Model Calibration - on the Edge of a New Approach

The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to ecological model calibration -- an agent-based software. This agent works on three stages: 1- It builds a matrix that synthesizes the inter-variable relationships; 2- It analyses the steady-state sensitivity of different variables to different parameters; 3- It runs the model iteratively and measures model lack of fit, adequacy and reliability. Stage 3 continues until some convergence criteria are attained. At each iteration, the agent knows from stages 1 and 2, which parameters are most likely to produce the desired shift on predicted results.

Abundance of elliptic dynamics on conservative 3-flows

We consider a compact 3-dimensional boundaryless Riemannian manifold M and the set of divergence-free (or zero divergence) vector fields without singularities, then we prove that this set has a C1-residual such that any vector field inside it is Anosov or else its elliptical orbits are dense in the manifold M.
