New "Bigs" in cosmology

This paper contains a detailed discussion on new cosmic solutions describing the early and late evolution of a universe that is filled with a kind of dark energy that may or may not satisfy the energy conditions. The main distinctive property of the resulting space-times is that they make to appear twice the single singular events predicted by the corresponding quintessential (phantom) models in a manner which can be made symmetric with respect to the origin of cosmic time. Thus, big bang and big rip singularity are shown to take place twice, one on the positive branch of time and the other on the negative one. We have also considered dark energy and phantom energy accretion onto black holes and wormholes in the context of these new cosmic solutions. It is seen that the space-times of these holes would then undergo swelling processes leading to big trip and big hole events taking place on distinct epochs along the evolution of the universe. In this way, the possibility is considered that the past and future be connected in a non-paradoxical manner in the universes described by means of the new symmetric solutions.

Will black holes eventually engulf the universe?

The Babichev-Dokuchaev-Eroshenko model for the accretion of dark energy onto black holes has been extended to deal with black holes with non-static metrics. The possibility that for an asymptotic observer a black hole with large mass will rapidly increase and eventually engulf the Universe at a finite time in the future has been studied by using reasonable values for astronomical parameters. It is concluded that such a phenomenon is forbidden for all black holes in quintessential cosmological models.

On the accretion of phantom energy onto wormholes

By using a properly generalized accretion formalism it is argued that the accretion of phantom energy onto a wormhole does not make the size of the wormhole throat to comovingly scale with the scale factor of the universe, but instead induces an increase of that size so big that the wormhole can engulf the universe itself before it reaches the big rip singularity, at least relative to an asymptotic observer.

Holographic cosmic energy, fundamental physics and the future of the universe

Holographic dark energy models have been recently suggested which most clearly show that accelerating cosmology appears to be incompatible with mathematically consistent formulations of fundamental theories such as string/M theories. In this paper it is however argued that holographic phantom models are no longer incompatible with such theories, provided that we allow for the existence of wormholes and ringholes near the big rip singularity and a quantization condition on the parameter of the equation of state is introduced. It is also seen that such a condition actually implies a quantization of the phantom energy which stabilizes the fluid against decay processes.

Wiggly cosmic strings accrete dark energy

This paper deals with a study of the cylindrically symmetric accretion of dark energy with equation of state $p=wρ$ onto wiggly straight cosmic strings. We have obtained that when $w>-1$ the linear energy density in the string core gradually increases tending to a finite maximum value as time increases for all considered dark energy models. On the regime where the dominant energy condition is violated all such models predict a steady decreasing of the linear energy density of the cosmic strings as phantom energy is being accreted. The final state of the string after such an accretion process is a wiggleless defect. It is argued however that if accreation of phantom energy would proceed by successive quantum steps then the defect would continue losing linear energy density until a minimum nonzero value which can be quite smaller than that corresponding to the unperturbed string.

Fundamental theories in a phantom universe

Starting with the holographic dark energy model of Li it is shown that the holographic screen at the future event horizon is sent toward infinity in the phantom energy case, so allowing for the existence of unique fundamental theories which are mathematically consistent in phantom cosmologies.

On tachyon and sub-quantum phantom cosmologies

This paper deals with dark and phantom energy in the tachyon and sub-quantum models for dark energy. We obtain that the simplest condition for such a regime to occur in these scenarios is that the scalar field be Wick rotated to imaginary values which correspond to an axionic field classically. By introducing analytical expressions for the scale factor or the Hubble parameter that satisfy all constraint equations of the used models we show that such models describe universes which develop a big rip singularity in the finite future.

Dark energy and supermassive black holes

This paper deals with a cosmological model in which the universe is filled with tachyon dark energy in order to describe current and future accelerating expansion. We obtain that the simplest condition for the regime of phantom energy to occur in this scenario is that the scalar field be Wick rotated to imaginary values which correspond to an axionic field classically. By introducing analytical expressions for the scale factor or the Hubble parameter that satisfy all constraint equations of the used models we show that such models describe universes which may develop a big rip singularity in the finite future. It is argued that, contrary to a recent claim, the entropy for a universe filled with dark energy is definite positive even on the phantom regime where the universe would instead acquire a negative temperature. It is also seen that, whichever the fate of the tachyonic accelerating universe, it will be stable to any fluctuations of the scalar field, and that since the considered models have all an imaginary sound speed, any overdense regions will undergo an accelerate collapse leading rapidly to formation of giant black holes. Finally the conjecture is advanced that these black holes may be the supermassive black holes that most galaxies harbor at their center.

Phantom thermodynamics

This paper deals with the thermodynamic properties of a phantom field in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. General expressions for the temperature and entropy of a general dark-energy field with equation of state $p=ωρ$ are derived from which we have deduced that, whereas the temperature of a cosmic phantom fluid ($ω<-1$) is definite negative, its entropy is always positive. We interpret that result in terms of the intrinsic quantum nature of the phantom field and apply it to (i) attain a consistent explanation for some recent results concerning the evolution of black holes which, induced by accreting phantom energy, gradually loss their mass to finally vanish exactly at the big rip, and (ii) introduce the concept of cosmological information and its relation with life and the anthropic principle. Some quantum statistical-thermodynamic properties of the quantum quantum field are also considered that include a generalized Wien law and the prediction of some novel phenomena such as the stimulated absorption of phantom energy and the anti-laser effect.

Phantom inflation and the "Big Trip"

Primordial inflation is regarded to be driven by a phantom field which is here implemented as a scalar field satisfying an equation of state $p=ωρ$, with $ω<-1$. Being even aggravated by the weird properties of phantom energy, this will pose a serious problem with the exit from the inflationary phase. We argue however in favor of the speculation that a smooth exit from the phantom inflationary phase can still be tentatively recovered by considering a multiverse scenario where the primordial phantom universe would travel in time toward a future universe filled with usual radiation, before reaching the big rip. We call this transition the "big trip" and assume it to take place with the help of some form of anthropic principle which chooses our current universe as being the final destination of the time transition.

Achronal cosmic future

The spherically symmetric accretion of dark and phantom energy onto Morris-Thorne wormholes is considered. It is obtained that the accretion of phantom energy leads to a gradual increase of the wormhole throat radius which eventually overtakes the super-accelerated expansion of the universe and becomes infinite at a time in the future before the occurrence of the big rip singularity. After that time, as it continues accreting phantom energy, the wormhole becomes an Einstein-Rosen bridge whose corresponding mass decreases rapidly and vanishes at the big rip.

Sub-Quantum Dark Energy

A procedure is considered which upgrades the Lagrangian description of quantum relativistic particles to the Lagrangian of a proper field theory in the case that the Klein-Gordon wave equation is classically interpreted in terms of a relativistic sub-quantum potential. We apply the resulting field theory to cosmology and show that the relativistic version of the Bohm's subquantum potential which can be associated with a homogeneous and isotropic distribution of particles behaves like though it was a cosmological constant responsible for the current accelerating expansion of the universe, at least in the limit where the field potential vanishes.

Axion Phantom Energy

The existence of phantom energy in a universe which evolves to eventually show a big rip doomsday is a possibility which is not excluded by present observational constraints. In this letter it is argued that the field theory associated with a simple quintessence model is compatible with a field definition which is interpretable in terms of a rank-three axionic tensor field, whenever we consider a perfect-fluid equation of state that corresponds to the phantom energy regime. Explicit expressions for the axionic field and its potential, both in terms of an imaginary scalar field, are derived which show that these quantities both diverge at the big rip, and that the onset of phantom-energy dominance must take place just at present.

K-Essential Phantom Energy: Doomsday around the corner?

In spite of its rather weird properties which include violation of the dominant-energy condition, the requirement of superluminal sound speed and increasing vacuum-energy density, phantom energy has recently attracted a lot of scientific and popular interests. In this letter it is shown that in the framework of a general k-essence model, vacuum-phantom energy leads to a cosmological scenario having negative sound speed and a big-rip singularity, where the field potential also blows up, which might occur at an almost arbitrarily near time in the future that can still be comfortably accommodated within current observational constraints.

Tensorial perturbations in the bulk of inflating brane worlds

In this paper we consider the stability of some inflating brane-world models in quantum cosmology. It is shown that whereas the singular model based on the construction of inflating branes from Euclidean five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space is unstable to tensorial cosmological perturbations in the bulk, the nonsingular model which uses a five-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter wormhole to construct the inflating branes is stable to these perturbations.

Wormholes and Ringholes in a Dark-Energy Universe

The effects that the present accelerating expansion of the universe has on the size and shape of Lorentzian wormholes and ringholes are considered. It is shown that, quite similarly to how it occurs for inflating wormholes, relative to the initial embedding-space coordinate system, whereas the shape of the considered holes is always preserved with time, their size is driven by the expansion to increase by a factor which is proportional to the scale factor of the universe. In the case that dark energy is phantom energy, which is not excluded by present constraints on the dark-energy equation of state, that size increase with time becomes quite more remarkable, and a rather speculative scenario is here presented where the big rip can be circumvented by future advanced civilizations by utilizing sufficiently grown up wormholes and ringholes as time machines that shortcut the big-rip singularity.

You need not be afraid of phantom energy

Phantom energy which violates the dominant-energy condition and is not excluded by current constraints on the equation of state may be dominating the evolution of the universe now. It has been pointed out that in such a case the fate of the universe may be a big rid where the expansion is so violent that all galaxies, planet and even atomic nuclei will be successively ripped apart in finite time. Here we show however that there are certain unified models for dark energy which are stable to perturbations in matter density where the presence of phantom energy does not lead to such a cosmic doomsday.

Unified Model for Dark Energy

A new model for the universe filled with a generalized Chaplygin fluid is considered which unitarily describes as a single vacuum entity both a quintessence scalar field and a cosmological constant, so unifying the notion of dark energy. While the evolution of the universe filled with such a fluid does not obviously contradict the present cosmic acceleration, the introduced single dark-energy component, for equations of state with characteristic parameter $ω\geq -1$, behaves like an usual quintessence fluid with constant equation of state at early high densities, and like a pure cosmological constant at late cosmological times.
