Movable Antenna Enhanced DF and AF Relaying Systems: Performance Analysis and Optimization

Movable antenna (MA) has been deemed as a promising technology to flexibly reconfigure wireless channels by adjusting the antenna positions in a given local region. In this paper, we investigate the application of the MA technology in both decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems, where a relay is equipped with multiple MAs to assist in the data transmission between two single-antenna nodes. For the DF relaying system, our objective is to maximize the achievable rate at the destination by jointly optimizing the positions of the MAs in two stages for receiving signals from the source and transmitting signals to the destination, respectively. To drive essential insights, we first derive a closed-form upper bound on the maximum achievable rate of the DF relaying system. Then, a low-complexity algorithm based on projected gradient ascent (PGA) and alternating optimization (AO) is proposed to solve the antenna position optimization problem. For the AF relaying system, our objective is to maximize the achievable rate by jointly optimizing the two-stage MA positions as well as the AF beamforming matrix at the relay, which results in a more challenging optimization problem due to the intricate coupling variables. To tackle this challenge, we first reveal the hidden separability among the antenna position optimization in the two stages and the beamforming optimization. Based on such separability, we derive a closed-form upper bound on the maximum achievable rate of the AF relaying system and propose a low-complexity algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution to the considered problem. Simulation results validate the efficacy of our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the superiority of the MA-enhanced relaying systems to the conventional relaying systems with fixed-position antennas (FPAs) and other benchmark schemes.

Secrecy Sum-Rate Maximization for Active IRS-Assisted MIMO-OFDM SWIPT System

The propagation loss of RF signals is a significant issue in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems. Additionally, ensuring information security is crucial due to the broadcasting nature of wireless channels. To address these challenges, we exploit the potential of active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) SWIPT system. The active IRS provides better beamforming gain than the passive IRS, reducing the "double-fading" effect. Moreover, the noise introduced at the active IRS can be used as artificial noise (AN) to jam eavesdroppers. This paper formulates a secrecy sum-rate maximization problem related to precoding matrices, power splitting (PS) ratios, and the IRS matrix. Since the problem is highly non-convex, we propose a block coordinate descent (BCD)-based algorithm to find a sub-optimal solution. Moreover, we develop a heuristic algorithm based on the zero-forcing precoding scheme to reduce computational complexity. Simulation results show that the active IRS achieves a higher secrecy sum rate than the passive and non-IRS systems, especially when the transmit power is low or the direct link is blocked. Moreover, increasing the power budget at the active IRS can significantly improve the secrecy sum rate.

FMBench: Benchmarking Fairness in Multimodal Large Language Models on Medical Tasks

Advancements in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have significantly improved medical task performance, such as Visual Question Answering (VQA) and Report Generation (RG). However, the fairness of these models across diverse demographic groups remains underexplored, despite its importance in healthcare. This oversight is partly due to the lack of demographic diversity in existing medical multimodal datasets, which complicates the evaluation of fairness. In response, we propose FMBench, the first benchmark designed to evaluate the fairness of MLLMs performance across diverse demographic attributes. FMBench has the following key features: 1: It includes four demographic attributes: race, ethnicity, language, and gender, across two tasks, VQA and RG, under zero-shot settings. 2: Our VQA task is free-form, enhancing real-world applicability and mitigating the biases associated with predefined choices. 3: We utilize both lexical metrics and LLM-based metrics, aligned with clinical evaluations, to assess models not only for linguistic accuracy but also from a clinical perspective. Furthermore, we introduce a new metric, Fairness-Aware Performance (FAP), to evaluate how fairly MLLMs perform across various demographic attributes. We thoroughly evaluate the performance and fairness of eight state-of-the-art open-source MLLMs, including both general and medical MLLMs, ranging from 7B to 26B parameters on the proposed benchmark. We aim for FMBench to assist the research community in refining model evaluation and driving future advancements in the field. All data and code will be released upon acceptance.

Over-the-Air Computation via 2D Movable Antenna Array

Movable antenna (MA) has emerged as a promising technology for improving the performance of wireless communication systems, which enables local movement of the antennas to create more favorable channel conditions. In this letter, we advance its application for over-the-air computation (AirComp) network, where an access point is equipped with a two-dimensional (2D) MA array to aggregate wireless data from massive users. We aim to minimize the computation mean square error (CMSE) by jointly optimizing the antenna position vector (APV), the receive combining vector at the access point and the transmit coefficients from all users. To tackle this highly non-convex problem, we propose a two-loop iterative algorithm, where the particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach is leveraged to obtain a suboptimal APV in the outer loop while the receive combining vector and transmit coefficients are alternately optimized in the inner loop. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed MA-enhanced AirComp network outperforms the conventional network with fixed-position antennas (FPAs).

System-Level Simulation Framework for NB-IoT: Key Features and Performance Evaluation

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a technology specifically designated by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to meet the explosive demand for massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and it is evolving to RedCap. Industrial companies have increasingly adopted NB-IoT as the solution for mMTC due to its lightweight design and comprehensive technical specifications released by 3GPP. This paper presents a system-level simulation framework for NB-IoT networks to evaluate their performance. The system-level simulator is structured into four parts: initialization, pre-generation, main simulation loop, and post-processing. Additionally, three essential features are investigated to enhance coverage, support massive connections, and ensure low power consumption, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the cumulative distribution function curves of the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio fully comply with industrial standards. Furthermore, the throughput performance explains how NB-IoT networks realize massive connections at the cost of data rate. This work highlights its practical utility and paves the way for developing NB-IoT networks.

Sum Rate Maximization for Movable Antenna Enabled Uplink NOMA

Movable antenna (MA) has been recently proposed as a promising candidate technology for the next generation wireless communication systems due to its significant capability of reconfiguring wireless channels via antenna movement. In this letter, we study an MA-enabled uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where each user is equipped with a single MA. Our objective is to maximize the users' sum rate by jointly optimizing the MAs' positions, the decoding order and the power control. To solve this non-convex problem, we equivalently transform it into two tractable subproblems. First, we use the successive convex approximation (SCA) to find a locally optimal solution for the antenna position optimization subproblem. Next, we derive the closed-form optimal solution of the decoding order and power control subproblem. Numerical results show that our proposed MA-enabled NOMA system can significantly enhance the sum rate compared to fixed-position antenna (FPA) systems and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) systems.

Movable Antenna Enhanced AF Relaying: Two-Stage Antenna Position Optimization

The movable antenna (MA) technology has attracted increasing attention in wireless communications due to its capability for flexibly adjusting the positions of multiple antennas in a local region to reconfigure channel conditions. In this paper, we investigate its application in an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system, where a multi-MA AF relay is deployed to assist in the wireless communications from a source to a destination. In particular, we aim to maximize the achievable rate at the destination, by jointly optimizing the AF weight matrix at the relay and its MAs' positions in two stages for receiving the signal from the source and transmitting its amplified version to the destination, respectively. However, compared to the existing one-stage antenna position optimization, the two-stage position optimization is more challenging due to its intricate coupling in the achievable rate at the destination. To tackle this challenge, we decompose the considered problem into several subproblems by invoking the alternating optimization (AO) and solve them by using the semidefinite programming and the gradient ascent. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed system over the conventional relaying system with fixed-position antennas (FPAs) and also drive essential insights.

Irredundant bases for the symmetric group

An irredundant base of a group $G$ acting faithfully on a finite set $Γ$ is a sequence of points in $Γ$ that produces a strictly descending chain of pointwise stabiliser subgroups in $G$, terminating at the trivial subgroup. Suppose that $G$ is $\operatorname{S}_n$ or $\operatorname{A}_n$ acting primitively on $Γ$, and that the point stabiliser is primitive in its natural action on $n$ points. We prove that the maximum size of an irredundant base of $G$ is $O\left(\sqrt{n}\right)$, and in most cases $O\left((\log n)^2\right)$. We also show that these bounds are best possible.

Decentralized Federated Learning with Asynchronous Parameter Sharing for Large-scale IoT Networks

Federated learning (FL) enables wireless terminals to collaboratively learn a shared parameter model while keeping all the training data on devices per se. Parameter sharing consists of synchronous and asynchronous ways: the former transmits parameters as blocks or frames and waits until all transmissions finish, whereas the latter provides messages about the status of pending and failed parameter transmission requests. Whatever synchronous or asynchronous parameter sharing is applied, the learning model shall adapt to distinct network architectures as an improper learning model will deteriorate learning performance and, even worse, lead to model divergence for the asynchronous transmission in resource-limited large-scale Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. This paper proposes a decentralized learning model and develops an asynchronous parameter-sharing algorithm for resource-limited distributed IoT networks. This decentralized learning model approaches a convex function as the number of nodes increases, and its learning process converges to a global stationary point with a higher probability than the centralized FL model. Moreover, by jointly accounting for the convergence bound of federated learning and the transmission delay of wireless communications, we develop a node scheduling and bandwidth allocation algorithm to minimize the transmission delay. Extensive simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the distributed algorithm in terms of fast learning model convergence and low transmission delay.

Air-to-Ground Communications Beyond 5G: UAV Swarm Formation Control and Tracking

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications have been widely accepted as promising technologies to support air-to-ground communications in the forthcoming sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel air-to-ground communication model consisting of aerial base stations served by UAVs and terrestrial user equipments (UEs) by integrating the technique of coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission with the theory of stochastic geometry. In particular, a CoMP set consisting of multiple UAVs is developed based on the theory of Poisson-Delaunay tetrahedralization. Effective UAV formation control and UAV swarm tracking schemes for two typical scenarios, including static and mobile UEs, are also developed using the multi-agent system theory to ensure that collaborative UAVs can efficiently reach target spatial positions for mission execution. Thanks to the ease of mathematical tractability, this model provides explicit performance expressions for a typical UE's coverage probability and achievable ergodic rate. Extensive simulation and numerical results corroborate that the proposed scheme outperforms UAV communications without CoMP transmission and obtains similar performance to the conventional CoMP scheme while avoiding search overhead.

Edge Learning for Large-Scale Internet of Things With Task-Oriented Efficient Communication

In the Internet of Things (IoT) networks, edge learning for data-driven tasks provides intelligent applications and services. As the network size becomes large, different users may generate distinct datasets. Thus, to suit multiple edge learning tasks for large-scale IoT networks, this paper performs efficient communication under the task-oriented principle by using the collaborative design of wireless resource allocation and edge learning error prediction. In particular, we start with multi-user scheduling to alleviate co-channel interference in dense networks. Then, we perform optimal power allocation in parallel for different learning tasks. Thanks to the high parallelization of the designed algorithm, extensive experimental results corroborate that the multi-user scheduling and task-oriented power allocation improve the performance of distinct edge learning tasks efficiently compared with the state-of-the-art benchmark algorithms.

Bayesian Compressive Channel Estimation for Hybrid Full-Dimensional MIMO Communications

Efficient channel estimation is challenging in full-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output communication systems, particularly in those with hybrid digital-analog architectures. Under a compressive sensing framework, this letter first designs a uniform dictionary based on a spherical Fibonacci grid to represent channels in a sparse domain, yielding smaller angular errors in three-dimensional beamspace than traditional dictionaries. Then, a Bayesian inference-aided greedy pursuit algorithm is developed to estimate channels in the frequency domain. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that both the designed dictionary and the proposed Bayesian channel estimation outperform the benchmark schemes and attain a lower normalized mean squared error of channel estimation.

UGV-assisted Wireless Powered Backscatter Communications for Large-Scale IoT Networks

Wireless powered backscatter communications (WPBC) is capable of implementing ultra-low-power communication, thus promising in the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. In practice, however, it is challenging to apply WPBC in large-scale IoT networks because of its short communication range. To address this challenge, this paper exploits an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) to assist WPBC in large-scale IoT networks. In particular, we investigate the joint design of network planning and dynamic resource allocation of the access point (AP), tag reader, and UGV to minimize the total energy consumption. Also, the AP can operate in either half-duplex (HD) or full-duplex (FD) multiplexing mode. Under HD mode, the optimal cell radius is derived and the optimal power allocation and transmit/receive beamforming are obtained in closed form. Under FD mode, the optimal resource allocation, as well as two suboptimal ones with low computational complexity, is developed. Simulation results disclose that dynamic power allocation at the tag reader rather than at the AP dominates the network energy efficiency while the AP operating in FD mode outperforms that in HD mode concerning energy efficienc

A Sparsity Adaptive Algorithm to Recover NB-IoT Signal from Legacy LTE Interference

As a forerunner in 5G technologies, Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) will be inevitably coexisting with the legacy Long-Term Evolution (LTE) system. Thus, it is imperative for NB-IoT to mitigate LTE interference. By virtue of the strong temporal correlation of the NB-IoT signal, this letter develops a sparsity adaptive algorithm to recover the NB-IoT signal from legacy LTE interference, by combining $K$-means clustering and sparsity adaptive matching pursuit (SAMP). In particular, the support of the NB-IoT signal is first estimated coarsely by $K$-means clustering and SAMP algorithm without sparsity limitation. Then, the estimated support is refined by a repeat mechanism. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed algorithm in terms of recovery probability and bit error rate, compared with competing algorithms.

Cooperative Beamforming for Wireless Fronthaul and Access Links in Ultra-Dense C-RANs with SWIPT: A First-Order Approach

This work studies multigroup multicasting transmission in cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where densely packed remote radio heads (RRHs) cooperatively provide information and energy services for information users (IUs) and energy users (EUs), respectively. To maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of information services while satisfying the energy harvesting levels at EUs, an optimization of joint beamforming design for the fronthaul and access links is formulated, which is however neither smooth nor convex and is indeed NP-hard. To tackle this difficulty, the smooth and successive convex approximations are used to transform the original problem into a sequence of convex problems, and two first-order algorithms are developed to find the initial feasible point and the nearly optimal solution, respectively. Moreover, an accelerated algorithm is designed to improve the convergence speed by exploiting both Nesterov and heavy-ball momentums. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed first-order algorithms achieve almost the same WSR as that of traditional second-order approaches yet with much lower computational complexity, and the proposed scheme outperforms state-of-the-art competing schemes in terms of WSR.

Energy-Efficient Non-Orthogonal Multicast and Unicast Transmission of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems with SWIPT

This work investigates the energy-efficient resource allocation for layered-division multiplexing (LDM) based non-orthogonal multicast and unicast transmission in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where each user equipment (UE) performs wireless information and power transfer simultaneously. To begin with, the achievable data rates for multicast and unicast services are derived in closed form, as well as the received radio frequency (RF) power at each UE. Based on the analytical results, a nonsmooth and nonconvex optimization problem for energy efficiency (EE) maximization is formulated, which is however a challenging fractional programming problem with complex constraints. To suit the massive access setting, a first-order algorithm is developed to find both initial feasible point and the nearly optimal solution. Moreover, an accelerated algorithm is designed to improve the convergence speed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed first-order algorithms can achieve almost the same EE as that of second-order approaches yet with much lower computational complexity, which provides insight into the superiority of the proposed algorithms for massive access in cell-free massive MIMO systems.

Optimal Tx-BF for MIMO SC-FDE Systems

Transmit beamforming (Tx-BF) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels is an effective means to improve system performance. In frequency-selective channels, Tx-BF can be implemented in combination with single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) to combat inter-symbol interference. In this paper, we consider the optimal design of the Tx-BF matrix for a MIMO SC-FDE system employing a linear minimum mean square error (MSE) receiver. We formulate the Tx-BF optimization problem as the minimization of a general function of the stream MSEs, subject to a transmit power constraint. The optimal structure of the Tx-BF matrix is obtained in closed form and an efficient algorithm is proposed for computing the optimal power allocation. Our simulation results validate the excellent performance of the proposed scheme in terms of uncoded bit-error rate and achievable bit rate.
