High-harmonic generation in GaAs beyond the perturbative regime

We experimentally study the field-intensity dependence of high-harmonic generation in bulk gallium arsenide in reflection geometry. We find the oscillatory behavior at high fields where a perturbative scaling law no longer holds. By constructing a theoretical framework based on the Luttinger-Kohn model, we succeed in reproducing the observed oscillatory behavior. The qualitative agreement between the experiment and theory indicates that field-induced dynamic band modification is crucial in the nonperturbative regime. We consider the origin of the oscillatory behavior in terms of dynamical localization based on the Floquet subband picture.

Efficient Terahertz Harmonic Generation with Coherent Acceleration of Electrons in the Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2

We report strong terahertz (~10^12 Hz) high harmonic generation in thin films of Cd3As2, a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal at room temperature. The third harmonics is detectable with tabletop light source and can be as strong as 100 V/cm by applying the fundamental field of 6.5 kV/cm inside the film, showing an unprecedented efficiency for terahertz frequency conversion. Our time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy and calculations also clarify the microscopic mechanism of the nonlinearity originating in the coherent acceleration of Dirac electrons in momentum space. Our results provide clear insights for nonlinear current of Dirac electrons driven by terahertz field under an influence of scattering, paving the way toward novel devices for high-speed electronics and photonics based on topological semimetals.

Geometrical analysis of Kerr-lens mode-locking for high-peak-power ultrafast oscillators

Ultrashort pulses from Kerr-lens mode-locked oscillators have inspired a variety of applications. The design and alignment of these laser resonators have thus far been theoretically supported by the conventional analysis of beam propagation. However, the well-established theoretical framework is sometimes beyond the scope of high-peak-power oscillators. In this paper, we analyze the geometry of ring resonators by extending the ABCD-matrix method to a high-peak-power regime. The guidelines to achieving stable Kerr-lens mode-locking is provided for high-peak-power pulses.
