A $(1.4 + ε)$-approximation algorithm for the $2$-Max-Duo problem

The maximum duo-preservation string mapping (Max-Duo) problem is the complement of the well studied minimum common string partition (MCSP) problem, both of which have applications in many fields including text compression and bioinformatics. $k$-Max-Duo is the restricted version of Max-Duo, where every letter of the alphabet occurs at most $k$ times in each of the strings, which is readily reduced into the well known maximum independent set (MIS) problem on a graph of maximum degree $Δ\le 6(k-1)$. In particular, $2$-Max-Duo can then be approximated arbitrarily close to $1.8$ using the state-of-the-art approximation algorithm for the MIS problem. $2$-Max-Duo was proved APX-hard and very recently a $(1.6 + ε)$-approximation was claimed, for any $ε> 0$. In this paper, we present a vertex-degree reduction technique, based on which, we show that $2$-Max-Duo can be approximated arbitrarily close to $1.4$.

How correlated is the FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system ?

Recent observation of $\sim$ 10 times higher critical temperature in FeSe monolayer compared with its bulk phase has drawn a great deal of attention because the electronic structure in the monolayer phase appears to be different than bulk FeSe. Using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, we find electronic correlations have important effects on the predicted atomic-scale geometry and the electronic structure of the monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$. The electronic correlations are dominantly controlled by the Se-Fe-Se angle either in the bulk phase or the monolayer phase. But the angle sensitivity increases and the orbital differentiation decreases in the monolayer phase compared to the bulk phase. The correlations are more dependent on Hund's J than Hubbard U. The observed orbital selective incoherence to coherence crossover with temperature confirms the Hund's metallic nature of the monolayer FeSe. We also find electron doping by oxygen vacancies in SrTiO$_3$ increases the correlation strength, especially in the $d_{xy}$ orbital by reducing the Se-Fe-Se angle.

Analytical calculation for the gluon fragmentation into spin-triplet S-wave quarkonium

Fragmentation is the dominant mechanism for hadron production with high transverse momentum. For spin-triplet S-wave heavy quarkonium production, contribution of gluon fragmenting to color-singlet channel has been numerically calculated since 1993. However, there is still no analytic expression available up to now because of its complexity. In this paper, we calculate both polarization-summed and polarized fragmentation functions of gluon fragmenting to a heavy quark-antiquark pair with quantum number $^3S_1^{[1]}$. Our calculations are performed in two different frameworks. One is the widely used nonrelativistic QCD factorization, and the other is the newly proposed soft gluon factorization. In either case, we calculate at both leading order and next-to-leading order in velocity expansion. All of our final results are presented in terms of compact analytic expressions.

Vortex-Ring-Induced Internal Mixing Upon the Coalescence of Initially Stationary Droplets

This study employs an improved volume of fluid method and adaptive mesh refinement algorithm to numerically investigate the internal jet-like mixing upon the coalescence of two initially stationary droplets of unequal sizes. The emergence of the internal jet is attributed to the formation of a main vortex ring, as the jet-like structure shows a strong correlation with the main vortex ring inside the merged droplet. By tracking the evolution of the main vortex ring together with its circulation, we identified two mechanisms that are essential to the internal-jet formation: the vortex-ring growth and the vortex-ring detachment. Recognizing that the manifestation of the vortex-ring-induced jet physically relies on the competition between the convection and viscous dissipation of the vortex ring, we further developed and substantiated a vortex-ring-based Reynolds number criterion to interpret the occurrence of the internal jet at various Ohnesorge numbers and size ratios. For the merged droplet with apparent jet formation, the average mixing rate after jet formation increases monotonically with the vortex-ring Reynolds number, which therefore serves as an approximate measure of the jet strength. In this respect, stronger internal jet is responsible for enhanced mixing of the merged droplet.

Center of Mass Momentum Dependent Interaction Between Ultracold Atoms

We show that a new type of two-body interaction, which depends on the momentum of the center of mass (CoM) of these two particles, can be realized in ultracold atom gases with a laser-modulaed magnetic Feshbach resonance (MFR). Here the MFR is modulated by two laser beams propagating along different directions, which can induce Raman transition between two-body bound states. The Doppler effect causes the two-atom scattering length to be strongly dependent on the CoM momentum of these two atoms. As a result, the effective two-atom interaction is CoM-momentum dependent, while the one-atom free Hamiltonian is still the simple kinetic energy ${\bf p}^2/(2m)$.

Security proof of the two-way quantum secure direct communication with channel loss and noise

Quantum secure direct communication is one of the important mode of quantum communication, which sends secret information through a quantum channel directly without setting up a prior key. Over the past decade, numerous protocols have been proposed, and part of them have been experimentally demonstrated. However, the strict security proof is still in suspense. Two-way protocol is seen as one of the most practical protocol, in this paper, the security of the two-way quantum secure direct communication protocol will be proved against general attacks when the noisy and lossy channel is taken into account. There are two steps included in the proof, firstly, we need to prove that the mutual information between Alice and Bob is larger than the mutual information shared between Alice and the eavesdropper when the error rate in control mode is less than the predetermined threshold. Secondly, once the error rate is lower than the threshold, one can always find out a forward error correction code to guarantee the security of information transmission.

Applying Software Patterns to Address Interoperability in Blockchain-based Healthcare Apps

Since the inception of the Bitcoin technology, its underlying data structure--the blockchain--has garnered much attention due to properties such as decentralization, transparency, and immutability. These properties make blockchains suitable for apps that require disintermediation through trustless exchange, consistent and incorruptible transaction records, and operational models beyond cryptocurrency. In particular, blockchain and its smart contract capabilities have the potential to address healthcare interoperability issues, such as enabling effective interactions between users and medical applications, delivering patient data securely to a variety of organizations and devices, and improving the overall efficiency of medical practice workflow. Despite the interest in using blockchain for healthcare interoperability, however, little information is available on the concrete architectural styles and patterns for applying blockchain to healthcare apps. This paper provides an initial step in filling this gap by showing: (1) the features and implementation challenges in healthcare interoperability, (2) an end-to-end case study of a blockchain-based healthcare app we are developing, and (3) how applying foundational software patterns can help address common interoperability challenges faced by blockchain-based healthcare apps.

Enhancing Kondo Coupling in Alkaline-Earth Atomic Gases with Confinement-induced Resonances in Mixed Dimensions

The Kondo effect describes the spin-exchanging interaction between localized impurity and the itinerant fermions. The ultracold alkaline-earth atomic gas provides a natural platform for quantum simulation of the Kondo model, utilizing its long-lived clock state and the nuclear-spin exchanging interaction between the clock state and the ground state. One of the key issue now is whether the Kondo temperature can be high enough to be reached in current experiment, for which we have proposed using a transverse confinement to confine atoms into a one-dimensional tube and to utilize the confinement-induced resonance to enhance the Kondo coupling. In this work, we further consider the $1+0$ dimensional scattering problem when the clock state is further confined by an axial harmonic confinement. We show that this axial confinement for the clock state atoms not only plays a role for localizing them, but also can act as an additional control knob to reach the confinement-induced resonance. We show that by combining both the transverse and the axial confinements, the confinement-induced resonance can be reached in the practical conditions and the Kondo effect can be attainable in this system.

SFCSD: A Self-Feedback Correction System for DNS Based on Active and Passive Measurement

Domain Name System (DNS), one of the important infrastructure in the Internet, was vulnerable to attacks, for the DNS designer didn't take security issues into consideration at the beginning. The defects of DNS may lead to users' failure of access to the websites, what's worse, users might suffer a huge economic loss. In order to correct the DNS wrong resource records, we propose a Self-Feedback Correction System for DNS (SFCSD), which can find and track a large number of common websites' domain name and IP address correct correspondences to provide users with a real-time auto-updated correct (IP, Domain) binary tuple list. By matching specific strings with SSL, DNS and HTTP traffic passively, filtering with the CDN CNAME and non-homepage URL feature strings, verifying with webpage fingerprint algorithm, SFCSD obtains a large number of highly possibly correct IP addresses to make an active manual correction in the end. Its self-feedback mechanism can expand search range and improve performance. Experiments show that, SFCSD can achieve 94.3% precision and 93.07% recall rate with the optimal threshold selection in the test dataset. It has 8Gbps processing speed stand-alone to find almost 1000 possibly correct (IP, Domain) per day for the each specific string and to correct almost 200.

Supporting Navigation of Outdoor Shopping Complexes for Visually-impaired Users through Multi-modal Data Fusion

Outdoor shopping complexes (OSC) are extremely difficult for people with visual impairment to navigate. Existing GPS devices are mostly designed for roadside navigation and seldom transition well into an OSC-like setting. We report our study on the challenges faced by a blind person in navigating OSC through developing a new mobile application named iExplore. We first report an exploratory study aiming at deriving specific design principles for building this system by learning the unique challenges of the problem. Then we present a methodology that can be used to derive the necessary information for the development of iExplore, followed by experimental validation of the technology by a group of visually impaired users in a local outdoor shopping center. User feedback and other experiments suggest that iExplore, while at its very initial phase, has the potential of filling a practical gap in existing assistive technologies for the visually impaired.

X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4: a Metal-Ceramic Composite with Unique Efficiency Values for Water-Splitting in Neutral Regime

Water splitting allows the storage of solar energy into chemical bonds (H2+O2) and will help to implement the urgently needed replacement of limited available fossil fuels. Particularly in neutral environment electrochemically initiated water splitting suffers from low efficiency due to high overpotentials caused by the anode. Electro-activation of X20CoCrWMo10-9, a Co-based tool steel resulted in a new composite material (X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4) that catalyzes the anode half-cell reaction of water electrolysis with a so far unequalled effectiveness. The current density achieved with this new anode in pH 7 corrected 0.1 M phosphate buffer is over a wide range of overpotentials around 10 times higher compared to recently developed, up-to-date electrocatalysts and represents the benchmark performance advanced catalysts show in regimes that support water splitting significantly better than pH 7 medium. X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4 exhibited electrocatalytic properties not only at pH 7, but also at pH 13, which is much superior to the ones of IrO2-RuO2, single-phase Co3O4- or Fe/Ni- based catalysts. Both XPS and FT-IR experiments unmasked Co3O4 as the dominating compound on the surface of the X20CoCrWMo10-9//Co3O4 composite. Upon a comprehensive dual beam FIB-SEM (focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy) study we could show that the new composite does not exhibit a classical substrate-layer structure due to the intrinsic formation of the Co-enriched outer zone. This structural particularity is basically responsible for the outstanding electrocatalytic OER performance.

Electro-Oxidation of Ni42 Steel: A highly Active Bifunctional Electrocatalyst

Janus type Water-Splitting Catalysts have attracted highest attention as a tool of choice for solar to fuel conversion. AISI Ni 42 steel was upon harsh anodization converted in a bifunctional electrocatalyst. Oxygen evolution reaction- (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are highly efficiently and steadfast catalyzed at pH 7, 13, 14, 14.6 (OER) respectively at pH 0, 1, 13, 14, 14.6 (HER). The current density taken from long-term OER measurements in pH 7 buffer solution upon the electro activated steel at 491 mV overpotential was around 4 times higher (4 mA/cm2) in comparison with recently developed OER electrocatalysts. The very strong voltage-current behavior of the catalyst shown in OER polarization experiments at both pH 7 and at pH 13 were even superior to those known for IrO2-RuO2. No degradation of the catalyst was detected even when conditions close to standard industrial operations were applied to the catalyst. A stable Ni-, Fe- oxide based passivating layer sufficiently protected the bare metal for further oxidation. Quantitative charge to oxygen- (OER) and charge to hydrogen (HER) conversion was confirmed. High resolution XPS spectra showed that most likely gamma-NiO(OH) and FeO(OH) are the catalytic active OER and NiO is the catalytic active HER species.

Uniqueness and traveling waves in a cell motility model

We study a non-linear and non-local evolution equation for curves obtained as the sharp interface limit of a phase-field model for crawling motion of eukaryotic cells on a substrate. We establish uniqueness of solutions to the sharp interface limit equation in the so-called subcritical parameter regime. The proof relies on a Grönwall estimate for a specially chosen weighted $L^2$ norm. Next, as persistent motion of crawling cells is of central interest to biologists we study the existence of traveling wave solutions. We prove that traveling wave solutions exist in the supercritical parameter regime provided the non-linear term of the sharp interface limit equation possesses certain asymmetry (related, e.g., to myosin contractility). Finally, we numerically investigate traveling wave solutions and simulate their dynamics. Due to non-uniqueness of solutions of the sharp interface limit equation we simulate a related, singularly perturbed PDE system which is uniquely solvable. Our simulations predict instability of traveling wave solutions and capture both bipedal wandering cell motion as well as rotating cell motion; these behaviors qualitatively agree with recent experimental and theoretical fidings.

Topologically entangled Rashba-split Shockley states on the surface of grey arsenic

We discover a pair of spin-polarized surface bands on the (111) face of grey arsenic by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the occupied side, the pair resembles typical nearly-free-electron Shockley states observed on noble-metal surfaces. However, pump-probe ARPES reveals that the spin-polarized pair traverses the bulk band gap and that the crossing of the pair at $\barΓ$ is topologically unavoidable. First-principles calculations well reproduce the bands and their non-trivial topology; the calculations also support that the surface states are of Shockley type because they arise from a band inversion caused by crystal field. The results provide compelling evidence that topological Shockley states are realized on As(111).

Approximation algorithms for the vertex happiness

We investigate the maximum happy vertices (MHV) problem and its complement, the minimum unhappy vertices (MUHV) problem. We first show that the MHV and MUHV problems are a special case of the supermodular and submodular multi-labeling (Sup-ML and Sub-ML) problems, respectively, by re-writing the objective functions as set functions. The convex relaxation on the Lovász extension, originally presented for the submodular multi-partitioning (Sub-MP) problem, can be extended for the Sub-ML problem, thereby proving that the Sub-ML (Sup-ML, respectively) can be approximated within a factor of $2 - \frac{2}{k}$ ($\frac{2}{k}$, respectively). These general results imply that the MHV and the MUHV problems can also be approximated within $\frac{2}{k}$ and $2 - \frac{2}{k}$, respectively, using the same approximation algorithms. For MHV, this $\frac{2}{k}$-approximation algorithm improves the previous best approximation ratio $\max \{\frac{1}{k}, \frac{1}{Δ+ 1}\}$, where $Δ$ is the maximum vertex degree of the input graph. We also show that an existing LP relaxation is the same as the concave relaxation on the Lovász extension for the Sup-ML problem; we then prove an upper bound of $\frac{2}{k}$ on the integrality gap of the LP relaxation. These suggest that the $\frac{2}{k}$-approximation algorithm is the best possible based on the LP relaxation. For MUHV, we formulate a novel LP relaxation and prove that it is the same as the convex relaxation on the Lovász extension for the Sub-ML problem; we then show a lower bound of $2 - \frac{2}{k}$ on the integrality gap of the LP relaxation. Similarly, these suggest that the $(2 - \frac{2}{k})$-approximation algorithm is the best possible based on the LP relaxation. Lastly, we prove that this $(2 - \frac{2}{k})$-approximation is optimal for the MUHV problem, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture.

Temporal Feature Selection on Networked Time Series

This paper formulates the problem of learning discriminative features (\textit{i.e.,} segments) from networked time series data considering the linked information among time series. For example, social network users are considered to be social sensors that continuously generate social signals (tweets) represented as a time series. The discriminative segments are often referred to as \emph{shapelets} in a time series. Extracting shapelets for time series classification has been widely studied. However, existing works on shapelet selection assume that the time series are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.). This assumption restricts their applications to social networked time series analysis, since a user's actions can be correlated to his/her social affiliations. In this paper we propose a new Network Regularized Least Squares (NetRLS) feature selection model that combines typical time series data and user network data for analysis. Experiments on real-world networked time series Twitter and DBLP data demonstrate the performance of the proposed method. NetRLS performs better than LTS, the state-of-the-art time series feature selection approach, on real-world data.

Configuration dependent reflection induced by dissipated localized modes

We study the one photon scattering problem for a super cavity (SC) coupling with two two-level atoms. With atomic decay, we find a sudden drop in reflection at $Δ=0$ for the two atoms in the node-antinode configuration but not in the antinode-node one. The underlying mechanism is due to the scatterer has a configuration dependent localized dissipated eigen-mode at $Δ=0$. In the node-antinode configuration, the eigen-mode localized near the input side, which can transport the photon into the SC. By exciting the atom at the node, the photon can leak into the reservoir due to atomic decay, which causes the sudden drop at $Δ=0$ in reflection. In the antinode-node case, however, the eigen-mode is localized near the output side, no photon can be transported into the SC and leads to completely reflection at $Δ=0$. A similar phenomenon has been observed in a recent experiment of X-ray quantum optics [Nature \textbf{482}, 199 (2012)] but with a much more complicated explanation due to electromagnetically induced transparency.

Protonation enhancement by dichloromethane doping in low-pressure photoionization

Doping has been used to enhance the ionization efficiency of analytes in atmospheric pressure photoionization, which is based on charge exchange. Compounds with excellent ionization efficiencies are usually chosen as dopants. In this paper, we report a new phenomenon observed in low-pressure photoionization: Protonation enhancement by dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) doping. CH2Cl2 is not a common dopant due to its high ionization energy (11.33 eV). The low-pressure photoionization source was built using a krypton VUV lamp that emits photons with energies of 10.0 and 10.6 eV and was operated at 500-1000 Pa. Protonation of water, methanol, ethanol, and acetaldehyde was respectively enhanced by 481.7 +/- 122.4, 197.8 +/- 18.8, 87.3 +/- 7.8, and 93.5 +/- 35.5 times after doping 291 ppmv CH2Cl2, meanwhile CH2Cl2 almost does not generate noticeable ions itself. This phenomenon has not been documented in the literature. A new protonation process involving in ion-pair and H-bond formations was proposed to expound the phenomenon. The observed phenomenon opens a new prospect for the improvement of the detection efficiency of VUV photoionization.
