e$^{+}$/e$^{-}$ Discrimination in Liquid Scintillator and Its Usage to Suppress $^{8}$He/$^{9}$Li Backgrounds

Reactor neutrino experiments build large-scale detector systems to detect neutrinos. In liquid scintillator, a neutral bound state of a positron and an electron, named positronium, can be formed. The spin triplet state is called ortho-positronium (o-Ps). In this article, an experiment is designed to measure the lifetime of o-Ps, giving a result of 3.1 ns. A PSD parameter based on photon emission time distribution (PETD) was constructed to discriminate e$^+$/e$^-$. Finally, the application of e$^+$/e$^-$ discrimination in the JUNO experiment is shown. It helps suppress $^{8}$He/$^{9}$Li backgrounds and improves the sensitivity by 0.6 in $χ^2$ analysis with an assumption of $σ$=1 ns PMT Transit Time Spread, which will bring a smearing effect to the PETD.

Quantum Defect Theory for Orbital Feshbach Resonance

In the ultracold gases of alkali-earth (like) atoms, a new type of Feshbach resonance, i.e., the orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR), has been proposed and experimentally observed in ultracold $^{173}$Yb atoms. When the OFR of the $^{173}$Yb atoms occurs, the energy gap between the open and closed channels is smaller by two orders of magnitudes than the van der Waals energy. As a result, quantitative accurate results for the low-energy two-body problems can be obtained via multi-channel quantum defect theory (MQDT), which is based on the exact solution of the Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger equation with the van der Waals potential. In this paper we use the MQDT to calculate the two-atom scattering length, effective range, and the binding energy of two-body bound states for the systems with OFR. With these results we further study the clock-transition spectrum for the two-body bound states, which can be used to experimentally measure the binding energy. Our results are helpful for the quantitative theoretical and experimental researches for the ultracold gases of alkali-earth (like) atoms with OFR.

Yin and Yang: Balancing and Answering Binary Visual Questions

The complex compositional structure of language makes problems at the intersection of vision and language challenging. But language also provides a strong prior that can result in good superficial performance, without the underlying models truly understanding the visual content. This can hinder progress in pushing state of art in the computer vision aspects of multi-modal AI. In this paper, we address binary Visual Question Answering (VQA) on abstract scenes. We formulate this problem as visual verification of concepts inquired in the questions. Specifically, we convert the question to a tuple that concisely summarizes the visual concept to be detected in the image. If the concept can be found in the image, the answer to the question is "yes", and otherwise "no". Abstract scenes play two roles (1) They allow us to focus on the high-level semantics of the VQA task as opposed to the low-level recognition problems, and perhaps more importantly, (2) They provide us the modality to balance the dataset such that language priors are controlled, and the role of vision is essential. In particular, we collect fine-grained pairs of scenes for every question, such that the answer to the question is "yes" for one scene, and "no" for the other for the exact same question. Indeed, language priors alone do not perform better than chance on our balanced dataset. Moreover, our proposed approach matches the performance of a state-of-the-art VQA approach on the unbalanced dataset, and outperforms it on the balanced dataset.

Chandra ACIS Survey of X-ray Point Sources: The Source Catalog

The $Chandra$ archival data is a valuable resource for various studies on different topics of X-ray astronomy. In this paper, we utilize this wealth and present a uniformly processed data set, which can be used to address a wide range of scientific questions. The data analysis procedures are applied to 10,029 ACIS observations, which produces 363,530 source detections, belonging to 217,828 distinct X-ray sources. This number is twice the size of the $Chandra$ Source Catalog (Version 1.1). The catalogs in this paper provide abundant estimates of the detected X-ray source properties, including source positions, counts, colors, fluxes, luminosities, variability statistics, etc. Cross-correlation of these objects with galaxies shows 17,828 sources are located within the $D_{25}$ isophotes of 1110 galaxies, and 7504 sources are located between the $D_{25}$ and 2$D_{25}$ isophotes of 910 galaxies. Contamination analysis with the log$N$--log$S$ relation indicates that 51.3\% of objects within 2$D_{25}$ isophotes are truly relevant to galaxies, and the "net" source fraction increases to 58.9\%, 67.3\%, and 69.1\% for sources with luminosities above $10^{37}$, $10^{38}$, and $10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Among the possible scientific uses of this catalog, we discuss the possibility to study intra-observation variability, inter-observation variability, and supersoft sources.

Kondo Effect in Alkali-Earth Atomic Gases with Confinement-induced Resonance

Alkali-earth atoms have a long-lived electronic excited state, which can be localized in the Fermi sea of ground state atoms by an external potential and serve as magnetic impurities, due to the spin-exchange interaction between the excited and the ground state atoms. This can give rise to the Kondo effect. However, in order to achieve this effect in current atomic gas experiment, it requires the Kondo temperature to be increased to a sizable portion of the Fermi temperature. In this letter we propose that the spin-exchange interaction can be strongly enhanced by utilizing the confinement-induced resonance (CIR). We analyze this system by the renormalization group approach, and we show that nearby a CIR, the Kondo temperature can indeed be increased to the regime attainable by current experiments.

Long-term Optical Studies of the Be/X-ray Binary RX J0440.9+4431/LS V+44 17

We present the spectroscopic and photometric observations on the Be/X-ray binary RX~J0440.9+4431 from 2001 to 2014. The short-term and long-term variability of the H$α$ line profile indicates that one-armed global oscillations existed in the circumstellar disk. Several positive and negative correlations between the $V$-band brightness and the H$α$ intensity \textbf{were} found from the long-term photometric and spectroscopic observations. We suggest that the monotonic increase of the $V$-band brightness and the H$α$ brightness between our 2005-2007 observations might be the result of a continuous mass ejection from the central Be star, while the negative correlation in 2007-2010 should be caused by the cessation of mass loss from the Be star just before the decline in $V$-band brightness began (around our 2007 observations). With the extension of the ejection material, the largest circumstellar disk during the last two decades has been observed in our 2010 observations with an equivalent width of $\sim$$-12.88$ Å, which corresponds to a circumstellar disk with a size of 12.9 times the radius of the central Be star. Three consecutive X-ray outbursts peaking around MJD 55293, 55444, and 55591 might be connected with the largest circumstellar disk around the Be star. We also use the orbital motion of the neutron star as a probe to constrain the structure of the circumstellar disk and estimate the eccentricity of the binary system to be $\ge$ 0.4. After three years of the H$α$ intensity decline after the X-ray outbursts, a new circumstellar disk was being formed around the Be star after our 2013 observations.

Faster and Simpler Width-Independent Parallel Algorithms for Positive Semidefinite Programming

This paper studies the problem of finding an $(1+ε)$-approximate solution to positive semidefinite programs. These are semidefinite programs in which all matrices in the constraints and objective are positive semidefinite and all scalars are non-negative. We present a simpler \NC parallel algorithm that on input with $n$ constraint matrices, requires $O(\frac{1}{ε^3} log^3 n)$ iterations, each of which involves only simple matrix operations and computing the trace of the product of a matrix exponential and a positive semidefinite matrix. Further, given a positive SDP in a factorized form, the total work of our algorithm is nearly-linear in the number of non-zero entries in the factorization.

Orbital Feshbach Resonance: A "Wide" Narrow Resonance for Higher Transition Temperature Fermi Superfluid

In this letter we show that the recently theoretically predicted and experimentally observed "orbital Feshbach resonance" in alkali-earth-like Yb-173 atom is a narrow resonance in energy, while it is hundreds Gauss wide in term of magnetic field strength, taking the advantage that the magnetic moment difference between the open and closed channels is quite small. Therefore this is an ideal platform for the experimental realization of a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid with narrow resonance. We show that the transition temperature for the Fermi superfluid in this system, especially at the BCS side of the resonance, is even higher than that in a wide resonance, which is also due to the narrow character of this resonance. Our results will encourage experimental efforts to realize Fermi superfluid in the alkali-earth-like Yb-173 system, the properties of which will be complementary to extensively studied Fermi superfluids nearby a wide resonance in alkali K-40 and Li-6 systems.

A multi-orbital iterated perturbation theory for model Hamiltonians and real material-specific calculations of correlated systems

Perturbative schemes utilizing a spectral moment expansion are well known and extensively used for investigating the physics of model Hamiltonians and real material systems. The advantages they offer, in terms of being computationally inexpensive, with real frequency output at zero and finite temperatures, compensate for their deficiencies and offer a quick, qualitative analysis of the system behavior. In this work, we have developed a method, that can be classified as a multi-orbital iterative perturbation theory (MO-IPT) to study N-fold degenerate and non degenerate Anderson impurity models. As applications of the solver, we have combined the method with dynamical mean field theory to explore lattice models like the single orbital Hubbard model, covalent band insulator and the multi-orbital Hubbard model for density-density type interactions in different parameter regimes. The Hund's coupling effects in case of multiple orbitals is also studied. The limitations and quality of results are gauged through extensive comparison with data from the numerically exact continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method (hybridization expansion CTQMC). In general we observe that the agreement with CTQMC results gets better as we move away from particle-hole symmetry. We have integrated MO-IPT with density functional theory based electronic structure methods to study real material systems. As a test case, we have studied the classic, strongly correlated electronic material, SrVO$_3$. A comparison of density of states and photo emission spectrum (PES) with results obtained from different impurity solvers and experiments yields good agreement.

Orbital Feshbach Resonance with Small Energy Gap between Open and Closed Channels

Recently a new type of Feshbach resonance, i.e., orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR) was proposed for the ultracold alkali-earth (like) atoms, and experimentally observed in the ultracold gases of $^{\rm 173}$Yb atoms. Unlike most of the magnetic Feshbach resonances of ultracold alkali atoms, when the OFR of $^{\rm 173}$Yb atoms appears, the energy gap between the thresholds of the open channel (OC) and the closed channel (CC) is much smaller than the characteristic energy of the inter-atomic interaction, i.e., the van der Waals energy. In this paper we study the OFR in the systems with small CC-OC threshold gap. We show that in these systems the OFR can be induced by the coupling between the OC and either an isolated bound state of the CC or the scattering states of the CC. Moreover, we also show that in each case the two-channel Huang-Yang pesudopoential is always applicable for the approximate calculation of the low-energy scattering amplitude. Our results imply that in the theoretical calculations for these systems it is appropriate to take into account the contributions from the scattering states of the CC.

Preliminary test results of LAr prototype detector

WIMPs are a well-motivated galactic dark matter candidate. Liquid argon (LAr) is an attractive target for the direct detection of WIMPs. The LAr prototype detector is designed to study the technology and property of LAr detector. The prototype detector have an active volume containing 0.65 kg of liquid argon. The liquid nitrogen(LN) cooling system allows the temperature of liquid argon to be maintained at the boiling point (87.8 K) with fluctuations less than 0.1 K. The prototype was calibrated with a Na$^{22}$ source, with the light yield 1.591$\pm$0.019 p.e./keV for the 511 keV gamma rays using the domestic-made argon purification system.

Selective enhancement of resonant multiphoton ionization with strong laser fields

High-resolution photoelectron momentum distributions of Xe atoms ionized by 800-nm linearly polarized laser fields have been traced at intensities from 1.1*1013 to 3.5*1013W/cm2 using velocity-map imaging techniques. At certain laser intensities, the momentum spectrum exhibits a distinct double-ring structure for low-order above-threshold ionization, which appears to be absent at lower or higher laser intensities. By investigating the intensity-resolved photoelectron energy spectrum, we find that this double-ring structure originates from resonant multiphoton ionization involving multiple Rydberg states of atoms. Varying the laser intensity, we can selectively enhance the resonant multiphoton ionization through certain atomic Rydberg states. The photoelectron angular distributions of multiphoton resonance are also investigated for the low-order above-threshold ionization.

Observation of a van Hove singularity and implication for strong coupling induced Cooper pairing in KFe2As2

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) have been investigated on single crystal samples of KFe2As2. A van Hove singularity (vHs) has been directly observed just a few meV below the Fermi level E_F of superconducting KFe2As2, which locates in the middle of the principle axes of the first Brillouin zone. The majority of the density-of-states at E_F, mainly contributed by the proximity effect of the saddle point to E_F, is non-gapped in the superconducting state. Our observation of nodal behavior of the momentum area close to the vHs points, while providing consistent explanations to many exotic behaviours previously observed in this material, suggests Cooper pairing induced by a strong coupling mechanism.

A Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws with discontinuous fluxes

The paper proposes a scheme by combining the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method with a δ-mapping algorithm for solving hyperbolic conservation laws with discontinuous fluxes. This hybrid scheme is particularly applied to nonlinear elasticity in heterogeneous media and multi-class traffic flow with inhomogeneous road conditions. Numerical examples indicate the scheme's efficiency in resolving complex waves of the two systems. Moreover, the discussion implies that the so-called δ-mapping algorithm can also be combined with any other classical methods for solving similar problems in general.

Further Theoretical Study of Distribution Separation Method for Information Retrieval

Recently, a Distribution Separation Method (DSM) is proposed for relevant feedback in information retrieval, which aims to approximate the true relevance distribution by separating a seed irrelevance distribution from the mixture one. While DSM achieved a promising empirical performance, theoretical analysis of DSM is still need further study and comparison with other relative retrieval model. In this article, we first generalize DSM's theoretical property, by proving that its minimum correlation assumption is equivalent to the maximum (original and symmetrized) KL-Divergence assumption. Second, we also analytically show that the EM algorithm in a well-known Mixture Model is essentially a distribution separation process and can be simplified using the linear separation algorithm in DSM. Some empirical results are also presented to support our theoretical analysis.

Suppression of two-body collisional loss in an ultracold gas via the Fano effect

The Fano effect (U. Fano, Phys. Rev. \textbf{15},1866 (1961) shows that an inelastic scattering process can be suppressed when the output channel (OC) is coupled to an isolated bound state. In this paper we investigate the application of this effect for the suppression of two-body collisional losses of ultracold atoms. The Fano effect is originally derived via a first-order perturbation treatment for coupling between the incident channel (IC) and the OC. We generalize the Fano effect to systems with arbitrarily strong IC--OC couplings. We analytically prove that, in a system with one IC and one OC, when the inter-atomic interaction potentials are real functions of the inter-atomic distance, the exact s-wave inelastic scattering amplitude can always be suppressed to \emph{zero} by coupling between the IC or the OC (or both of them) and an extra isolated bound state. We further show that when the low-energy inelastic collision between two ultracold atoms is suppressed by this effect, the real part of the elastic scattering length between the atoms is still possible to be much larger than the range of inter-atomic interaction. In addition, when open scattering channels are coupled to two bound states, with the help of the Fano effect, independent control of the elastic and inelastic scattering amplitudes of two ultracold atoms can be achieved. Possible experimental realizations of our scheme are also discussed.

Orbital Feshbach Resonance in Alkali-Earth Atoms

For a mixture of alkali-earth atomic gas in the long-lived excited state ${}^3P_0$ and ground state ${}^1S_0$, in addition to nuclear spin, another "orbital" index is introduced to distinguish these two internal states. In this letter we propose a mechanism to induce Feshbach resonance between two atoms with different orbital and nuclear spin quantum numbers. Two essential ingredients are inter-orbital spin-exchanging scattering and orbital dependence of the Landé g-factors. Here the orbital degrees of freedom plays similar role as electron spin degree of freedom in magnetic Feshbach resonance in alkali-metal atoms. This resonance is particularly accessible for ${}^{173}$Yb system. The BCS-BEC crossover in this system requires two fermion pairing order parameters, and displays significant difference comparing to that in alkali-metal system.

Dissociation of Feshbach molecules via spin-orbit coupling in ultracold Fermi gases

We study the dissociation of Feshbach molecules in ultracold Fermi gases with spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Since SO coupling can induce quantum transition between the Feshbach molecules and the fully polarized Fermi gas, the Feshbach molecules can be dissociated by the SO coupling. We experimentally realized this new type of dissociation in ultracold gases of 40K atoms with SO coupling created by Raman beams, and observed that the dissociation rate is highly non-monotonic on both the positive and negative Raman-detuning sides. Our results show that the dissociation of Feshbach molecules can be controlled by new degrees of freedoms, i.e., the SO-coupling intensity or the momenta of the Raman beams, as well as the detuning of the Raman beams.
