Rethinking Generative Mode Coverage: A Pointwise Guaranteed Approach

Many generative models have to combat $\textit{missing modes}$. The conventional wisdom to this end is by reducing through training a statistical distance (such as $f$-divergence) between the generated distribution and provided data distribution. But this is more of a heuristic than a guarantee. The statistical distance measures a $\textit{global}$, but not $\textit{local}$, similarity between two distributions. Even if it is small, it does not imply a plausible mode coverage. Rethinking this problem from a game-theoretic perspective, we show that a complete mode coverage is firmly attainable. If a generative model can approximate a data distribution moderately well under a global statistical distance measure, then we will be able to find a mixture of generators that collectively covers $\textit{every}$ data point and thus $\textit{every}$ mode, with a lower-bounded generation probability. Constructing the generator mixture has a connection to the multiplicative weights update rule, upon which we propose our algorithm. We prove that our algorithm guarantees complete mode coverage. And our experiments on real and synthetic datasets confirm better mode coverage over recent approaches, ones that also use generator mixtures but rely on global statistical distances.

Cauchy problem for fractional non-autonomous evolution equations

This paper deals with the following Cauchy problem to nonlinear time fractional non-autonomous integro-differential evolution equation of mixed type via measure of noncompactness $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} ^CD^α_tu(t)+A(t)u(t)= f(t,u(t),(Tu)(t), (Su)(t)),\quad t\in [0,a], \\[12pt] u(0)=A^{-1}(0)u_0 \end{array} \right. $$ in infinite-dimensional Banach space $E$, where $ ^CD^α_t$ is the standard Caputo's fractional time derivative of order $0<α\leq 1$, $A(t)$ is a family of closed linear operators defined on a dense domain $D(A)$ in Banach space $E$ into $E$ such that $D(A)$ is independent of $t$, $a>0$ is a constant, $f:[0,a]\times E\times E\times E\rightarrow E$ is a Carathéodory type function, $u_0\in E$, $T$ and $S$ are Volterra and Fredholm integral operators, respectively. Combining the theory of fractional calculus and evolution families, the fixed point theorem with respect to convex-power condensing operator and a new estimation technique of the measure of noncompactness, we obtained the existence of mild solutions under the situation that the nonlinear function satisfy some appropriate local growth condition and a noncompactness measure condition. Our results generalize and improve some previous results on this topic, since the condition of uniformly continuity of the nonlinearity is not required, and also the strong restriction on the constants in the condition of noncompactness measure is completely deleted. As samples of applications, we consider the initial value problem to a class of time fractional non-autonomous partial differential equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition at the end of this paper.

Real-time Scene Segmentation Using a Light Deep Neural Network Architecture for Autonomous Robot Navigation on Construction Sites

Camera-equipped unmanned vehicles (UVs) have received a lot of attention in data collection for construction monitoring applications. To develop an autonomous platform, the UV should be able to process multiple modules (e.g., context-awareness, control, localization, and mapping) on an embedded platform. Pixel-wise semantic segmentation provides a UV with the ability to be contextually aware of its surrounding environment. However, in the case of mobile robotic systems with limited computing resources, the large size of the segmentation model and high memory usage requires high computing resources, which a major challenge for mobile UVs (e.g., a small-scale vehicle with limited payload and space). To overcome this challenge, this paper presents a light and efficient deep neural network architecture to run on an embedded platform in real-time. The proposed model segments navigable space on an image sequence (i.e., a video stream), which is essential for an autonomous vehicle that is based on machine vision. The results demonstrate the performance efficiency of the proposed architecture compared to the existing models and suggest possible improvements that could make the model even more efficient, which is necessary for the future development of the autonomous robotics systems.

Diffusion of Janus Particles in Bacterial Suspensions: Second-Order Phase Transition and Counterintuitive Directional Propulsion

By developing a molecular dynamics model of bacterial chemotaxis, we present the first investigation of tracer statistics in bacterial suspensions where chemotactic effects are considered. We demonstrate that the non-Gaussian statistics of full-coated tracer arises from the athermal bacterial noise. Moreover, Janus (half-coated) tracer performs a composite random walk combining power-law-tail distributed Lévy flights with Brownian jiggling at low coating concentration, but turns to an enhanced directional transport (EDT) when coating concentration is high. Unlike conventional self-propelled particles, upon increasing coating concentration, the direction of EDT counterintuitively reverses from along to against the tracer orientation. Both these transitions are identified to be second-order, with the phase boundaries meeting at a triple point. A theoretical modeling that reveals the origin of such anomalous transport behaviors is proposed. Our findings reveal the fundamental nonequilibrium physics of active matter under external stimuli, and underscore the crucial role of asymmetrical environment in regulating the transport processes in biological systems.

Optimal bilinear control of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with singular potentials

In this paper, we consider an optimal bilinear control problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with singular potentials. We show well-posedness of the problem and existence of an optimal control. In addition, the first order optimality system is rigorously derived. Our results generalize the ones in \cite{Sp} in several aspects.
