Graded $K$-Theory, Filtered $K$-theory and the classification of graph algebras

We prove that an isomorphism of graded Grothendieck groups $K^{gr}_0$ of two Leavitt path algebras induces an isomorphism of a certain quotient of algebraic filtered $K$-theory and consequently an isomorphism of filtered $K$-theory of their associated graph $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we show that, since for a finite graph $E$ with no sinks, $K^{gr}_0\big(L(E)\big)$ of the Leavitt path algebra $L(E)$ coincides with Krieger's dimension group of its adjacency matrix $A_E$, our result relates the shift equivalence of graphs to the filtered $K$-theory and consequently gives that two arbitrary shift equivalent matrices give stably isomorphic graph $C^*$-algebras. This result was only known for irreducible graphs.

The Realization Problem for Finitely Generated Refinement Monoids

We show that every finitely generated conical refinement monoid can be represented as the monoid $\mathcal V(R)$ of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over a von Neumann regular ring $R$. To this end, we use the representation of these monoids provided by adaptable separated graphs. Given an adaptable separated graph $(E, C)$ and a field $K$, we build a von Neumann regular $K$-algebra $Q_K (E, C)$ and show that there is a natural isomorphism between the separated graph monoid $M(E, C)$ and the monoid $\mathcal V(Q_K (E, C))$.

Strict comparison for $C^*$-algebras arising from Almost finite groupoids

In this paper we show that for an almost finite minimal ample groupoid $G$, its reduced $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $C_r^*(G)$ has real rank zero and strict comparison even though $C_r^*(G)$ may not be nuclear in general. Moreover, if we further assume $G$ being also second countable and non-elementary, then its Cuntz semigroup ${\rm Cu}(C_r^*(G))$ is almost divisible and ${\rm Cu}(C_r^*(G))$ and ${\rm Cu}(C_r^*(G)\otimes \mathcal{Z})$ are canonically order-isomorphic, where $\mathcal{Z}$ denotes the Jiang-Su algebra.

Amenability and paradoxicality in semigroups and C*-algebras

We analyze the dichotomy amenable/paradoxical in the context of (discrete, countable, unital) semigroups and corresponding semigroup rings. We consider also Følner's type characterizations of amenability and give an example of a semigroup whose semigroup ring is algebraically amenable but has no Følner sequence. In the context of inverse semigroups $S$ we give a characterization of invariant measures on $S$ (in the sense of Day) in terms of two notions: $domain$ $measurability$ and $localization$. Given a unital representation of $S$ in terms of partial bijections on some set $X$ we define a natural generalization of the uniform Roe algebra of a group, which we denote by $\mathcal{R}_X$. We show that the following notions are then equivalent: (1) $X$ is domain measurable; (2) $X$ is not paradoxical; (3) $X$ satisfies the domain Følner condition; (4) there is an algebraically amenable dense *-subalgebra of $\mathcal{R}_X$; (5) $\mathcal{R}_X$ has an amenable trace; (6) $\mathcal{R}_X$ is not properly infinite and (7) $[0]\not=[1]$ in the $K_0$-group of $\mathcal{R}_X$. We also show that any tracial state on $\mathcal{R}_X$ is amenable. Moreover, taking into account the localization condition, we give several C*-algebraic characterizations of the amenability of $X$. Finally, we show that for a certain class of inverse semigroups, the quasidiagonality of $C_r^*\left(X\right)$ implies the amenability of $X$. The converse implication is false.

The groupoids of adaptable separated graphs and their type semigroup

Given an adaptable separated graph, we construct an associated groupoid and explore its type semigroup. Specifically, we first attach to each adaptable separated graph a corresponding semigroup, which we prove is an $E^*$-unitary inverse semigroup. As a consequence, the tight groupoid of this semigroup is a Hausdorff étale groupoid. We show that this groupoid is always amenable, and that the type semigroups of groupoids obtained from adaptable separated graphs in this way include all finitely generated conical refinement monoids. The first three named authors will utilize this construction in forthcoming work to solve the Realization Problem for von Neumann regular rings, in the finitely generated case.

Leavitt path algebras over a poset of fields

Let $E$ be a finite directed graph, and let $I$ be the poset obtained as the antisymmetrization of its set of vertices with respect to a pre-order $\le$ that satisfies $v\le w$ whenever there exists a directed path from $w$ to $v$. Assuming that $I$ is a tree, we define a poset of fields over $I$ as a family $\mathbf K = \{ K_i :i\in I \}$ of fields $K_i$ such that $K_i\subseteq K_j$ if $j\le i$. We define the concepts of a Leavitt path algebra $L_{\mathbf K} (E)$ and a regular algebra $Q_{\mathbf K}(E)$ over the poset of fields $\mathbf K$, and we show that $Q_{\mathbf K}(E)$ is a hereditary von Neumann regular ring, and that its monoid $\mathcal V (Q_{\mathbf K}(E))$ of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules is canonically isomorphic to the graph monoid $M(E)$ of $E$.

Sylvester matrix rank functions on crossed products

In this paper we consider the algebraic crossed product $\mathcal A := C_K(X) \rtimes_T \mathbb{Z}$ induced by a homeomorphism $T$ on the Cantor set $X$, where $K$ is an arbitrary field and $C_K(X)$ denotes the $K$-algebra of locally constant $K$-valued functions on $X$. We investigate the possible Sylvester matrix rank functions that one can construct on $\mathcal A$ by means of full ergodic $T$-invariant probability measures $μ$ on $X$. To do so, we present a general construction of an approximating sequence of $*$-subalgebras $\mathcal A_n$ which are embeddable into a (possibly infinite) product of matrix algebras over $K$. This enables us to obtain a specific embedding of the whole $*$-algebra $\mathcal A$ into $\mathcal M_K$, the well-known von Neumann continuous factor over $K$, thus obtaining a Sylvester matrix rank function on $\mathcal A$ by restricting the unique one defined on $\mathcal M_K$. This process gives a way to obtain a Sylvester matrix rank function on $\mathcal A$, unique with respect to a certain compatibility property concerning the measure $μ$, namely that the rank of a characteristic function of a clopen subset $U \subseteq X$ must equal the measure of $U$.

Uniqueness of the von Neumann continuous factor

For a division ring $D$, denote by $\mathcal M_D$ the $D$-ring obtained as the completion of the direct limit $\varinjlim_n M_{2^n}(D)$ with respect to the metric induced by its unique rank function. We prove that, for any ultramatricial $D$-ring $\mathcal B$ and any non-discrete extremal pseudo-rank function $N$ on $\mathcal B$, there is an isomorphism of $D$-rings $\overline{\mathcal B} \cong \mathcal M_D$, where $\overline{\mathcal B}$ stands for the completion of $\mathcal B$ with respect to the pseudo-metric induced by $N$. This generalizes a result of von Neumann. We also show a corresponding uniqueness result for $*$-algebras over fields $F$ with positive definite involution, where the algebra $\mathcal M_F$ is endowed with its natural involution coming from the $*$-transpose involution on each of the factors $M_{2^n}(F)$.

Amenability of coarse spaces and K-algebras

In this article we analyze the notions of amenability and paradoxical decomposition from an algebraic perspective. We consider this dichotomy for locally finite extended metric spaces and for general algebras over commutative fields. In the context of algebras we also study the relation of amenability with proper infiniteness. We apply our general analysis to two important classes of algebras: the unital Leavitt path algebras and the translation algebras on locally finite extended metric spaces. In particular, we show that the amenability of a metric space is equivalent to the algebraic amenability of the corresponding translation algebra.

Amenability and uniform Roe algebras

Amenability for groups can be extended to metric spaces, algebras over commutative fields and $C^*$-algebras by adapting the notion of Følner nets. In the present article we investigate the close ties among these extensions and show that these three pictures unify in the context of the uniform Roe algebra $C_u^*(X)$ over a metric space $(X,d)$ with bounded geometry. In particular, we show that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $(X,d)$ is amenable; (2) the translation algebra generating $C_u^*(X)$ is algebraically amenable (3) $C_u^*(X)$ has a tracial state; (4) $C_u^*(X)$ is not properly infinite; (5) $[1]_0\neq [0]_0$ in the $K_0$-group $K_0(C_u^*(X))$; (6) $C_u^*(X)$ does not contain the Leavitt algebra as a unital $*$-subalgebra; (7) $C_u^*(X)$ is a Følner $C^*$-algebra in the sense that it admits a net of unital completely positive maps into matrices which is asymptotically multiplicative in the normalized trace norm. We also show that every possible tracial state of the uniform Roe algebra $C_u^*(X)$ is amenable.

Convex subshifts, separated Bratteli diagrams, and ideal structure of tame separated graph algebras

We introduce a new class of partial actions of free groups on totally disconnected compact Hausdorff spaces, which we call convex subshifts. These serve as an abstract framework for the partial actions associated with finite separated graphs in much the same way as classical subshifts generalize the edge shift of a finite graph. We define the notion of a finite type convex subshift and show that any such subshift is Kakutani equivalent to the partial action associated with a finite bipartite separated graph. We then study the ideal structure of both the full and the reduced tame graph C*-algebras, $\mathcal{O}(E,C)$ and $\mathcal{O}^r(E,C)$, of a separated graph $(E,C)$, and of the abelianized Leavitt path algebra $L_K^{\text{ab}}(E,C)$ as well. These algebras are the (reduced) crossed products with respect to the above-mentioned partial actions, and we prove that there is a lattice isomorphism between the lattice of induced ideals and the lattice of hereditary $D^{\infty}$-saturated subsets of a certain infinite separated graph $(F_{\infty},D^{\infty})$ built from $(E,C)$, called the separated Bratteli diagram of $(E,C)$. We finally use these tools to study simplicity and primeness of the tame separated graph algebras.

Graded Steinberg algebras and their representations

We study the category of left unital graded modules over the Steinberg algebra of a graded ample Hausdorff groupoid. In the first part of the paper, we show that this category is isomorphic to the category of unital left modules over the Steinberg algebra of the skew-product groupoid arising from the grading. To do this, we show that the Steinberg algebra of the skew product is graded isomorphic to a natural generalisation of the the Cohen-Montgomery smash product of the Steinberg algebra of the underlying groupoid with the grading group. In the second part of the paper, we study the minimal (that is, irreducible) representations in the category of graded modules of a Steinberg algebra, and establish a connection between the annihilator ideals of these minimal representations, and effectiveness of the groupoid. Specialising our results, we produce a representation of the monoid of graded finitely generated projective modules over a Leavitt path algebra. We deduce that the lattice of order-ideals in the $K_0$-group of the Leavitt path algebra is isomorphic to the lattice of graded ideals of the algebra. We also investigate the graded monoid for Kumjian--Pask algebras of row-finite $k$-graphs with no sources. We prove that these algebras are graded von Neumann regular rings, and record some structural consequences of this.

Reconstruction of graded groupoids from graded Steinberg algebras

We show how to reconstruct a graded ample Hausdorff groupoid with topologically principal neutrally graded component from the ring structure of its graded Steinberg algebra over any commutative integral domain with 1, together with the embedding of the canonical abelian subring of functions supported on the unit space. We deduce that diagonal-preserving ring isomorphism of Leavitt path algebras implies $C^*$-isomorphism of $C^*$-algebras for graphs $E$ and $F$ in which every cycle has an exit.

K-theory for the tame C*-algebra of a separated graph

A {\it separated graph} is a pair $(E,C)$ consisting of a directed graph $E$ and a set $C=\bigsqcup_{v\in E^0}C_v$, where each $C_v$ is a partition of the set of edges whose terminal vertex is $v$. Given a separated graph $(E,C)$, such that all the sets $X\in C$ are finite, the K-theory of the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E,C)$ is known to be determined by the kernel and the cokernel of a certain map, denoted by $1_C- A_{(E,C)}$, from $\mathbb Z^{(C)}$ to $\mathbb Z^{(E^0)}$. In this paper, we compute the K-theory of the {\it tame} graph C*-algebra $\mathcal O(E,C)$ associated to $(E,C)$, which has been recently introduced by the authors. Letting $π$ denote the natural surjective homomorphism from $C^*(E,C)$ onto $\mathcal O(E,C)$, we show that $K_1(π)$ is a group isomorphism, and that $K_0(π)$ is a split monomorphism, whose cokernel is a torsion-free abelian group. We also prove that this cokernel is a free abelian group when the graph $E$ is finite, and determine its generators in terms of a sequence of separated graphs $\{(E_n, C^n)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ naturally attached to $(E,C)$. On the way to showing our main results, we obtain an explicit description of a connecting map arising in a six-term exact sequence computing the K-theory of an amalgamated free product, and we also exhibit an explicit isomorphism between $\mathrm{ker} (1_C - A_{(E,C)})$ and $K_1(C^*(E,C))$.

The realization problem for von Neumann regular rings

Leavitt path algebras with at most countably many irreducible representatios

Let E be an arbitrary directed graph with no restrictions on the number of vertices and edges and let K be any field. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Leavitt path algebra L_K(E) to be of countable irreducible representation type, that is, we determine when L_K(E)has at most countably many distinct isomorphism classes of simple left L_K(E-modules. It is also shown that L_K(E) has dinitely many isomorphism classes of simple left modules if and only if L_K(E) is a semi-artinian von Neumann regular ring with at most finitely many ideals. Equivalent conditions on the graph E are also given. Examples are constructed showing that for each (finite or infinite) cardinal m there exists a Leavitt path algebra L having exactly m distinct isomorphism classes of simple left modules.

Dynamical systems associated to separated graphs, graph algebras, and paradoxical decompositions

We attach to each finite bipartite separated graph (E,C) a partial dynamical system (Ω(E,C), F, θ), where Ω(E,C) is a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space, F is a finitely generated free group, and θ is a continuous partial action of F on Ω(E,C). The full crossed product C*-algebra O(E,C) = C(Ω(E,C)) \rtimes_θ F is shown to be a canonical quotient of the graph C*-algebra C^*(E,C) of the separated graph (E,C). Similarly, we prove that, for any *-field K, the algebraic crossed product L^{ab}_K(E,C) = C_K(Ω(E,C)) \rtimes_θ^{alg} F is a canonical quotient of the Leavitt path algebra L_K(E,C) of (E,C). The monoid V(L^{ab}_K(E,C)) of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over L^{ab}_K(E,C) is explicitly computed in terms of monoids associated to a canonical sequence of separated graphs. Using this, we are able to construct an action of a finitely generated free group F on a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space Z such that the type semigroup S(Z, F, K) is not almost unperforated, where K denotes the algebra of clopen subsets of Z. Finally we obtain a characterization of the separated graphs (E,C) such that the canonical partial action of F on Ω(E,C) is topologically free.
