Finitely presented simple modules over Leavitt path algebras

Let $E$ be an arbitrary graph and $K$ be any field. We construct various classes of non-isomorphic simple modules over the Leavitt path algebra $L_{K}(E)$ induced by vertices which are infinite emiters, closed paths which are exclusive cycles and paths which are infinite, and call these simple modules Chen modules. It is shown that every primitive ideal of $L_{K}(E)$ can be realized as the annihilator ideal of some Chen module. Our main result establishes the equivalence between a graph theoretic condition and various conditions concerning the structure of simple modules over $L_K(E)$.

Amenable traces and Følner C*-Algebras

In the present article we review an approximation procedure for amenable traces on unital and separable C*-algebras acting on a Hilbert space in terms of Følner sequences of non-zero finite rank projections. We apply this method to improve spectral approximation results due to Arveson and Bédos. We also present an abstract characterization in terms of unital completely positive maps of unital separable C*-algebras admitting a non-degenerate representation which has a Følner sequence or, equivalently, an amenable trace. This is analogous to Voiculescu's abstract characterization of quasidiagonal C*-algebras. We define Følner C*-algebras as those unital separable C*-algebras that satisfy these equivalent conditions. Finally we also mention some permanence properties related to these algebras.

Følner sequences in operator theory and operator algebras

The present article is a review of recent developments concerning the notion of Følner sequences both in operator theory and operator algebras. We also give a new direct proof that any essentially normal operator has an increasing Følner sequence $\{P_n\}$ of non-zero finite rank projections that strongly converges to 1. The proof is based on Brown-Douglas-Fillmore theory. We use Følner sequences to analyze the class of finite operators introduced by Williams in 1970. In the second part of this article we examine a procedure of approximating any amenable trace on a unital and separable C*-algebra by tracial states $\mathrm{Tr}(\cdot P_n)/\mathrm{Tr}(P_n)$ corresponding to a Følner sequence and apply this method to improve spectral approximation results due to Arveson and Bédos. The article concludes with the analysis of C*-algebras admitting a non-degenerate representation which has a Følner sequence or, equivalently, an amenable trace. We give an abstract characterization of these algebras in terms of unital completely positive maps and define Følner C*-algebras as those unital separable C*-algebras that satisfy these equivalent conditions. This is analogous to Voiculescu's abstract characterization of quasidiagonal C*-algebras.

Ring coproducts embedded in power-series rings

Let $R$ be a ring (associative, with 1), and let $R<< a,b>>$ denote the power-series $R$-ring in two non-commuting, $R$-centralizing variables, $a$ and $b$. Let $A$ be an $R$-subring of $R<< a>>$ and $B$ be an $R$-subring of $R<< b>>$, and let $α$ denote the natural map $A \amalg_R B \to R<< a,b>>$. This article describes some situations where $α$ is injective and some where it is not. We prove that if $A$ is a right Ore localization of $R[a]$ and $B$ is a right Ore localization of $R[b]$, then $α$ is injective. For example, the group ring over $R$ of the free group on $\{1+a, 1+b\}$ is $R[ (1+a)^{\pm 1}] \amalg_R R[ (1+b)^{\pm 1}]$, which then embeds in $R<< a,b>>$. We thus recover a celebrated result of R H Fox, via a proof simpler than those previously known. We show that $α$ is injective if $R$ is \textit{$Π$-semihereditary}, that is, every finitely generated, torsionless, right $R$-module is projective. The article concludes with some results contributed by G M Bergman that describe situations where $α$ is not injective. He shows that if $R$ is commutative and $\text{w.gl.dim\,} R \ge 2$, then there exist examples where the map $α' \colon A \amalg_R B \to R<< a>>\amalg_R R<< b>>$ is not injective, and hence neither is $α$. It follows from a result of K R Goodearl that when $R$ is a commutative, countable, non-self-injective, von Neumann regular ring, the map $α"\colon R<< a>>\amalg_R R<< b>> \to R<< a,b>>$ is not injective. Bergman gives procedures for constructing other examples where $α"$ is not injective.

Purely infinite simple reduced C*-algebras of one-relator separated graphs

Given a separated graph $(E,C)$, there are two different C*-algebras associated to it, the full graph C*-algebra $C^*(E,C)$, and the reduced one $C^*_{\text{red}} (E,C)$. For a large class of separated graphs $(E,C)$, we prove that $C^*_{\text{red}} (E,C)$ either is purely infinite simple or admits a faithful tracial state. The main tool we use to show pure infiniteness of reduced graph C*-algebras is a generalization to the amalgamated case of a result on purely infinite simple free products due to Dykema.

Tensor products of Leavitt path algebras

We compute the Hochschild homology of Leavitt path algebras over a field $k$. As an application, we show that $L_2$ and $L_2\otimes L_2$ have different Hochschild homologies, and so they are not Morita equivalent; in particular they are not isomorphic. Similarly, $L_\infty$ and $L_\infty\otimes L_\infty$ are distinguished by their Hochschild homologies and so they are not Morita equivalent either. By contrast, we show that $K$-theory cannot distinguish these algebras; we have $K_*(L_2)=K_*(L_2\otimes L_2)=0$ and $K_*(L_\infty)=K_*(L_\infty\otimes L_\infty)=K_*(k)$.

Dynamical systems of type (m,n) and their C*-algebras

Given positive integers n and m, we consider dynamical systems in which n copies of a topological space is homeomorphic to m copies of that same space. The universal such system is shown to arise naturally from the study of a C*-algebra we denote by O_{mn}, which in turn is obtained as a quotient of the well known Leavitt C*-algebra L_{mn}, a process meant to transform the generating set of partial isometries of L{mn} into a tame set. Describing O_{mn} as the crossed-product of the universal (m,n)-dynamical system by a partial action of the free group F_{m+n}, we show that O_{mn} is not exact when n and m are both greater than or equal to 2, but the corresponding reduced crossed-product, denoted O_{mn}^r, is shown to be exact and non-nuclear. Still under the assumption that m,n>=2, we prove that the partial action of F_{m+n} is topologically free and that O_{mn}^r satisfies property (SP) (small projections). We also show that O_{mn}^r admits no finite dimensional representations. The techniques developed to treat this system include several new results pertaining to the theory of Fell bundles over discrete groups.

The regular algebra of a poset

Let $K$ be a field. We attach to each finite poset $\mathbb P$ a von Neumann regular $K$-algebra $Q_K(\mathbb P)$ in a functorial way. We show that the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective $Q_K(\mathbb P)$-modules is the abelian monoid generated by $\mathbb P$ with the only relations given by $p=p+q$ whenever $q<p$ in $\mathbb P$. This extends the class of monoids for which there is a positive solution to the realization problem for von Neumann regular rings.

Mixed quiver algebras

In this paper we introduce a new class of $K$-algebras associated with quivers. Given any finite chain $\mathbf{K}_r: K=K_0\subseteq K_1\subseteq ... \subseteq K_r$ of fields and a chain $\mathbf{E}_r : H_0\subset H_1\subset ... \subset H_r=E^0$ of hereditary saturated subsets of the set of vertices $E^0$ of a quiver $E$, we build the mixed path algebra $P_{\mathbf{K}_r}(E,\mathbf{H}_r)$, the mixed Leavitt path algebra $L_{\mathbf{K}_r}(E,\mathbf{H}_r)$ and the mixed regular path algebra $Q_{\mathbf{K}_r}(E,\mathbf{H}_r)$ and we show that they share many properties with the unmixed species $P_K(E)$, $L_K(E)$ and $Q_K(E)$.

Module theory over Leavitt path algebras and $K$-theory

Let $k$ be a field and let $E$ be a finite quiver. We study the structure of the finitely presented modules of finite length over the Leavitt path algebra $L_k (E)$ and show its close relationship with the finite-dimensional representations of the inverse quiver $\overline{E}$ of $E$, as well as with the class of finitely generated $P_k(E)$-modules $M$ such that ${\rm Tor}_q^{P_k (E)}(k^{|E^0|},M)=0$ for all $q$, where $P_k(E)$ is the usual path algebra of $E$. By using these results we compute the higher $K$-theory of the von Neumann regular algebra $Q_k (E)=L_k (E)Σ^{-1}$, where $Σ$ is the set of all square matrices over $P_k (E)$ which are sent to invertible matrices by the augmentation map $ε\colon P_k (E)\to k^{|E^0|}$.

$K$-theory of Leavitt path algebras

Let $E$ be a row-finite quiver and let $E_0$ be the set of vertices of $E$; consider the adjacency matrix $N'_E=(n_{ij})\in\Z^{(E_0\times E_0)}$, $n_{ij}=#\{$ arrows from $i$ to $j\}$. Write $N^t_E$ and 1 for the matrices $\in \Z^{(E_0\times E_0\setminus\Sink(E))}$ which result from $N'^t_E$ and from the identity matrix after removing the columns corresponding to sinks. We consider the $K$-theory of the Leavitt algebra $L_R(E)=L_\Z(E)\otimes R$. We show that if $R$ is either a Noetherian regular ring or a stable $C^*$-algebra, then there is an exact sequence ($n\in\Z$) \[ K_n(R)^{(E_0\setminus\Sink(E))}\stackrel{1-N_E^t}{\longrightarrow} K_n(R)^{(E_0)}\to K_n(L_R(E))\to K_{n-1}(R)^{(E_0\setminus\Sink(E))} \] We also show that for general $R$, the obstruction for having a sequence as above is measured by twisted nil-$K$-groups. If we replace $K$-theory by homotopy algebraic $K$-theory, the obstructions dissapear, and we get, for every ring $R$, a long exact sequence \[ KH_n(R)^{(E_0\setminus\Sink(E))}\stackrel{1-N_E^t}{\longrightarrow}KH_n(R)^{(E_0)}\to KH_n(L_R(E))\to KH_{n-1}(R)^{(E_0\setminus\Sink(E))} \] We also compare, for a $C^*$-algebra $\fA$, the algebraic $K$-theory of $L_\fA(E)$ with the topological $K$-theory of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra $C^*_\fA(E)$. We show that the map \[ K_n(L_\fA(E))\to K^{\top}_n(C^*_\fA(E)) \] is an isomorphism if $\fA$ is stable and $n\in\Z$, and also if $\fA=\C$, $n\ge 0$, $E$ is finite with no sinks, and $\det(1-N_E^t)\ne 0$.

K-Theory for operator algebras. Classification of C$^*$-algebras

In this article we survey some of the recent goings-on in the classification programme of C$^*$-algebras, following the interesting link found between the Cuntz semigroup and the classical Elliott invariant and the fact that the Elliott conjecture does not hold at its boldest. We review the construction of this object both by means of positive elements and via its recent interpretation using countably generated Hilbert modules (due to Coward, Elliott and Ivanescu). The passage from one picture to another is presented with full, concise, proofs. We indicate the potential role of the Cuntz semigroup in future classification results, particularly for non-simple algebras.

The Maximal C*-Algebra of Quotients as an Operator Bimodule

We establish a description of the maximal C*-algebra of quotients of a unital C*-algebra $A$ as a direct limit of spaces of completely bounded bimodule homomorphisms from certain operator submodules of the Haagerup tensor product $A\otimes_h A$ labelled by the essential closed right ideals of $A$ into $A$. In addition the invariance of the construction of the maximal C*-algebra of quotients under strong Morita equivalence is proved.

Maximal C*-algebras of quotients and injective envelopes of C*-algebras

A new C*-enlargement of a C*-algebra $A$ nested between the local multiplier algebra $M_{\text{loc}}(A)$ of $A$ and its injective envelope $I(A)$ is introduced. Various aspects of this maximal C*-algebra of quotients, $Q_{\text{max}}(A)$, are studied, notably in the setting of AW*-algebras. As a by-product we obtain a new example of a type I C*-algebra $A$ such that $M_{\text{loc}}(M_{\text{loc}}(A))\ne M_{\text{loc}}(A)$.

The regular algebra of a quiver

Let $K$ be a fixed field. We attach to each column-finite quiver $E$ a von Neumann regular $K$-algebra $Q(E)$ in a functorial way. The algebra $Q(E)$ is a universal localization of the usual path algebra $P(E)$ associated with $E$. The monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective right $Q(E)$-modules is explicitly computed.

A not so simple local multiplier algebra

We construct an AF-algebra $A$ such that its local multiplier algebra $M_{\text{loc}}(A)$ does not agree with $M_{\text{loc}}(M_{\text{loc}}(A))$, thus answering a question raised by G.K. Pedersen in 1978.

Extensions and Pullbacks in QB-rings

We prove a new extension result for $QB-$rings that allows us to examine extensions of rings where the ideal is purely infinite and simple. We then use this result to explore various constructions that provide new examples of $QB-$rings. More concretely, we show that a surjective pullback of two $QB-$rings is usually again a $QB-$ring. Specializing to the case of an extension of a semi-prime ideal $I$ of a unital ring $R$, the pullback setting leads naturally to the study of rings whose multiplier rings are $QB-$rings. For a wide class of regular rings, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for their multiplier rings to be $QB-$rings. Our analysis is based on the study of extensions and the use of non-stable $K-$theoretical techniques.
