Rabinowitz Floer homology of negative line bundles and Floer Gysin sequence

This article is concerned with the Rabinowitz Floer homology of negative line bundles. We construct a refined version of Rabinowitz Floer homology and study its properties. In particular, we build a Gysin-type long exact sequence for this new invariant and discuss an application to the orderability problem for prequantization spaces. We also construct a short exact sequence for the ordinary Rabinowitz Floer homology and provide computational results.

On conformal points of area preserving maps and related topics

In this article we consider area preserving diffeomorphisms of planar domains, and we are interested in their conformal points, i.e., points at which the derivative is a similarity. We present some conditions that guarantee existence of conformal points for the infinitesimal problem of Hamiltonian vector fields as well as for what we call moderate symplectomorphisms of simply connected domains. We also link this problem to the Carathéodory and Loewner conjectures.

On the Geometric Mechanics of Assignment Flows for Metric Data Labeling

Metric data labeling refers to the task of assigning one of multiple predefined labels to every given datapoint based on the metric distance between label and data. This assignment of labels typically takes place in a spatial or spatio-temporal context. Assignment flows are a class of dynamical models for metric data labeling that evolve on a basic statistical manifold, the so called assignment manifold, governed by a system of coupled replicator equations. In this paper we generalize the result of a recent paper for uncoupled replicator equations and adopting the viewpoint of geometric mechanics, relate assignment flows to critical points of an action functional via the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. We also show that not every assignment flow is a critical point and characterize precisely the class of coupled replicator equations fulfilling this relation, a condition that has been missing in recent related work. Finally, some consequences of this connection to Lagrangian mechanics are investigated including the fact that assignment flows are, up to initial conditions of measure zero, reparametrized geodesics of the so-called Jacobi metric.

Loewner's "forgotten" theorem

Let $f(t)$ be a smooth and periodic function of one real variable. Then the planar curves $t\mapsto \big(f'(t),f(t)\big)$ and $t\mapsto \big(f''(t)-f(t),f'(t)\big)$ both have non-negative rotation number around every point not on the curve. These are the two simplest cases of a beautiful Theorem by C. Loewner. This article is expository, we prove the two statements by elementary means following work by Bol [3]. After that, we present Loewner's Theorem and his proof from [7].

Symplectically convex and symplectically star-shaped curves -- a variational problem

In this article we propose a generalization of the 2-dimensional notions of convexity resp. being star-shaped to symplectic vector spaces. We call such curves symplectically convex resp. symplectically star-shaped. After presenting some basic results we study a family of variational problems for symplectically convex and symplectically star-shaped curves which is motivated by the affine isoperimetric inequality. These variational problems can be reduced back to two dimensions. For a range of the family parameter extremal points of the variational problem are rigid: they are multiply traversed conics. For all family parameters we determine when non-trivial first and second order deformations of conics exist. In the last section we present some conjectures and questions and two galleries created with the help of a Mathematica applet by Gil Bor.

Hamiltonian delay equations -- examples and a lower bound for the number of periodic solutions

We describe a variational approach to a notion of Hamiltonian delay equations. Our delay Hamiltonians are of product form. We consider several examples. For closed symplectically aspherical symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$ we prove that for generic delay Hamiltonians the number of 1-periodic solutions of the Hamiltonian delay equation is at least the sum of the Betti numbers of $M$, extending the proof of the Arnold conjecture to the case with delay.

Polygonal symplectic billiards

In this article, we study polygonal symplectic billiards. We provide new results, some of which are inspired by numerical investigations. In particular, we present several polygons for which all orbits are periodic. We demonstrate their properties and derive various conjectures using two numerical implementations.

A symplectic dynamics proof of the degree-genus formula

We classify global surfaces of section for the Reeb flow of the standard contact form on the 3-sphere, defining the Hopf fibration. As an application, we prove the degree-genus formula for complex projective curves, using an elementary degeneration process inspired by the language of holomorphic buildings in symplectic field theory.

Pseudorotations of the 2-disc and Reeb flows on the 3-sphere

We use Lerman's contact cut construction to find a sufficient condition for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of compact surfaces to embed into a closed 3-manifold as Poincaré return maps on a global surface of section for a Reeb flow. In particular, we show that the irrational pseudorotations of the 2-disc constructed by Fayad-Katok embed into the Reeb flow of a dynamically convex contact form on the 3-sphere.

An iterated graph construction and periodic orbits of Hamiltonian delay equations

According to the Arnold conjectures and Floer's proofs, there are non-trivial lower bounds for the number of periodic solutions of Hamiltonian differential equations on a closed symplectic manifold whose symplectic form vanishes on spheres. We use an iterated graph construction and Lagrangian Floer homology to show that these lower bounds also hold for certain Hamiltonian delay equations.

Periodic Reeb orbits on prequantization bundles

In this paper, we prove that every graphical hypersurface in a prequantization bundle over a symplectic manifold $M$, pinched between two circle bundles whose ratio of radii is less than $\sqrt{2}$ carries either one short simple periodic orbit or carries at least $\operatorname{cuplength}(M)+1$ simple periodic Reeb orbits.

Introducing symplectic billiards

In this article we introduce a simple dynamical system called symplectic billiards. As opposed to usual/Birkhoff billiards, where length is the generating function, for symplectic billiards symplectic area is the generating function. We explore basic properties and exhibit several similarities, but also differences of symplectic billiards to Birkhoff billiards.

Positive loops and $L^{\infty}$-contact systolic inequalities

We prove an inequality between the $L^{\infty}$-norm of the contact Hamiltonian of a positive loop of contactomorphims and the minimal Reeb period. This implies that there are no small positive loops on hypertight or Liouville fillable contact manifolds. Non-existence of small positive loops for overtwisted 3-manifolds was proved by Casals-Presas-Sandon in [CPS16]. As corollaries of the inequality we deduce various results. E.g. we prove that certain periodic Reeb flows are the unique minimizers of the $L^\infty$-norm. Moreover, we establish $L^\infty$-type contact systolic inequalities in the presence of a positive loop.

Reeb dynamics inspired by Katok's example in Finsler geometry

Inspired by Katok's examples of Finsler metrics with a small number of closed geodesics, we present two results on Reeb flows with finitely many periodic orbits. The first result is concerned with a contact-geometric description of magnetic flows on the 2-sphere found recently by Benedetti. We give a simple interpretation of that work in terms of a quaternionic symmetry. In the second part, we use Hamiltonian circle actions on symplectic manifolds to produce compact, connected contact manifolds in dimension at least five with arbitrarily large numbers of periodic Reeb orbits. This contrasts sharply with recent work by Cristofaro-Gardiner, Hutchings and Pomerleano on Reeb flows in dimension three. With the help of Hamiltonian plugs and a surgery construction due to Laudenbach we reprove a result of Cieliebak: one can produce Hamiltonian flows in dimension at least five with any number of periodic orbits; in dimension three, with any number greater than one.

Bubbles and Onis

In this article we study the gradient flow equation of a variant of the Rabinowitz action functional on very negative line bundles and relate it to periodic orbits on the base of this bundle. On very negative line bundles there are generically no holomorphic spheres.

Local systems on the free loop space and finiteness of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity

In this article we examine under which conditions symplectic homology with local coefficients of a unit disk bundle $D^*M$ vanishes. For instance this is the case if the Hurewicz map $π_2(M)\to H_2(M;\mathbb{Z})$ is nonzero. As an application we prove finiteness of the $π_1$-sensitive Hofer-Zehnder capacity of unit disk bundles in these cases. We also prove uniruledness for such cotangent bundles. Moreover, we find an obstruction to the existence of $H$-space structures on general topological spaces, formulated in terms of local systems.
