Cuplength estimates in Morse cohomology

The main goal of this paper is to give a unified treatment to many known cuplength estimates. As the base case, we prove that for $C^0$-perturbations of a function which is Morse-Bott along a closed submanifold, the number of critical points is bounded below in terms of the cuplength of that critical submanifold. As we work with rather general assumptions the proof also applies in a variety of Floer settings. For example, this proves lower bounds for the number of fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, Hamiltonian chords for Lagrangian submanifolds, translated points of contactomorphisms, and solutions to a Dirac-type equation.

Symplectic Tate homology

For a Liouville domain $W$ satisfying $c_1(W)=0$, we propose in this note two versions of symplectic Tate homology $\underrightarrow{H}\underleftarrow{T}(W)$ and $\underleftarrow{H}\underrightarrow{T}(W)$ which are related by a canonical map $κ\colon \underrightarrow{H}\underleftarrow{T}(W) \to \underleftarrow{H}\underrightarrow{T}(W)$. Our geometric approach to Tate homology uses the moduli space of finite energy gradient flow lines of the Rabinowitz action functional for a circle in the complex plane as a classifying space for $S^1$-equivariant Tate homology. For rational coefficients the symplectic Tate homology $\underrightarrow{H}\underleftarrow{T}(W)$ has the fixed point property and is therefore isomorphic to $H(W;\mathbb{Q}) \otimes \mathrm{Q}[u,u^{-1}]$, where $\mathbb{Q}[u,u^{-1}]$ is the ring of Laurent polynomials over the rationals. Using a deep theorem of Goodwillie, we construct examples of Liouville domains where the canonical map $κ$ is not surjective and examples where it is not injective.

Orderability, contact non-squeezing, and Rabinowitz Floer homology

We study Liouville fillable contact manifolds $(Σ,ξ)$ with non-zero Rabinowitz Floer homology and assign spectral numbers to paths of contactomorphisms. As a consequence we prove that $\widetilde{\mathrm{Cont}_0}(Σ,ξ)$ is orderable in the sense of Eliashberg and Polterovich. This provides a new class of orderable contact manifolds. If the contact manifold is in addition periodic or a prequantization space $M \times S^1$ for $M$ a Liouville manifold, then we construct a contact capacity. This can be used to prove a general non-squeezing result, which amongst other examples in particular recovers the beautiful non-squeezing results from [EKP06].

Orderability and the Weinstein Conjecture

In this article we prove that the Weinstein conjecture holds for contact manifolds $(Σ,ξ)$ for which $\mathrm{Cont}_0(Σ,ξ)$ is non-orderable in the sense of Eliashberg-Polterovich [EP00]. More precisely, we establish a link between orderable and hypertight contact manifolds. In addition, we prove for certain contact manifolds a conjecture by Sandon [San13b] on the existence of translated points in the non-degenerate case.

Exponential decay for sc-gradient flow lines

In this paper we introduce the notion of sc-action functionals and their sc-gradient flow lines. Our approach is inspired by Floer's unregularized gradient flow. The main result of this paper is that under a Morse condition sc-gradient flow lines have uniform exponential decay towards critical points. The ultimate goal for the future is to construct a M-polyfold bundle over a M-polyfold such that the space of broken sc-gradient flow lines is the zero set of a appropriate sc-section. Here uniform exponential decay is essential. Of independent interest is that we derive exponential decay estimates using interpolation inequalities as opposed to Sobolev inequalities. An advantage is that interpolation inequalities are independent of the dimension of the source space.

Translated points and Rabinowitz Floer homology

We prove that if a contact manifold admits an exact filling then every local contactomorphism isotopic to the identity admits a translated point in the interior of its support, in the sense of Sandon [San11b]. In addition we prove that if the Rabinowitz Floer homology of the filling is non-zero then every contactomorphism isotopic to the identity admits a translated point, and if the Rabinowitz Floer homology of the filling is infinite dimensional then every contactmorphism isotopic to the identity has either infinitely many translated points, or a translated point on a closed leaf. Moreover if the contact manifold has dimension greater than or equal to 3, the latter option generically doesn't happen. Finally, we prove that a generic contactomorphism on $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}$ has infinitely many geometrically distinct iterated translated points all of which lie in the interior of its support.

The Conley-Zehnder indices of the rotating Kepler problem

We determine the Conley-Zehnder indices of all periodic orbits of the rotating Kepler problem for energies below the critical Jacobi energy. Consequently, we show the universal cover of the bounded component of the regularized energy hypersurface is dynamically convex. Moreover, in the universal cover there is always precisely one periodic orbit with Conley-Zehnder index 3, namely the lift of the doubly covered retrograde circular orbit.

Global surfaces of section in the planar restricted 3-body problem

The restricted planar three-body problem has a rich history, yet many unanswered questions still remain. In the present paper we prove the existence of a global surface of section near the smaller body in a new range of energies and mass ratios for which the Hill's region still has three connected components. The approach relies on recent global methods in symplectic geometry and contrasts sharply with the perturbative methods used until now.

A variational approach to Givental's nonlinear Maslov index

In this article we consider a variant of Rabinowitz Floer homology in order to define a homological count of discriminant points for paths of contactomorphisms. The growth rate of this count can be seen as an analogue of Givental's nonlinear Maslov index. As an application we prove a Bott-Samelson type obstruction theorem for positive loops of contactomorphisms.

The contact geometry of the restricted 3-body problem

We show that the planar circular restricted three body problem is of restricted contact type for all energies below the first critical value (action of the first Lagrange point) and for energies slightly above it. This opens up the possibility of using the technology of Contact Topology to understand this particular dynamical system.

Periodic bounce orbits of prescribed energy

We prove the existence of periodic bounce orbits of prescribed energy on an open bounded domain in Euclidean space. We derive explicit bounds on the period and the number of bounce points.

Rabinowitz Floer homology: A survey

Rabinowitz Floer homology is the semi-infinite dimensional Morse homology associated to the Rabinowitz action functional used in the pioneering work of Rabinowitz. Gradient flow lines are solutions of a vortex-like equation. In this survey article we describe the construction of Rabinowitz Floer homology and its applications to symplectic and contact topology, global Hamiltonian perturbations and the study of magnetic fields.

On a Theorem by Ekeland-Hofer

In [EH89, Theorem 1] Ekeland-Hofer prove that for a centrally symmetric, restricted contact type hypersurface in R^{2n} and for any global, centrally symmetric Hamiltonian perturbation there exists a leaf-wise intersection point. In this note we show that if we replace restricted contact type by star-shaped there exists infinitely many leaf-wise intersection points or a leaf-wise intersection point on a closed characteristic.

Spectral Invariants in Rabinowitz Floer homology and Global Hamiltonian perturbations

Spectral invariant were introduced in Hamiltonian Floer homology by Viterbo, Oh, and Schwarz. We extend this concept to Rabinowitz Floer homology. As an application we derive new quantitative existence results for leaf-wise intersections. The importance of spectral invariants for the presented application is that spectral invariants allow us to derive existence of critical points of the Rabinowitz action functional even in degenerate situations where the functional is not Morse.
