Lipschitz estimates in the Besov settings for Young and rough differential equations

We develop a set of techniques that enable us to effectively recover Besov rough analysis from p-variation rough analysis. Central to our approach are new metric groups, in which some objects in rough path theory that have been previously viewed as two-parameter can be considered as path increments. Furthermore, we develop highly precise Lipschitz estimates for Young and rough differential equations, both in the variation and Besov scale.

Diamonds and forward variance models

In this non-technical introduction to diamond trees and forests, we focus on their application to computation in stochastic volatility models written in forward variance form, rough volatility models in particular.

Almost sure diffusion approximation in averaging via rough paths theory

The paper deals with the fast-slow motions setups in the continuous time $\frac {dX^\ve(t)}{dt}=\frac 1\ve\sig(X^\ve(t))\xi(t/\ve^2)+b(X^\ve(t)),\, t\in [0,T]$ and the discrete time $X_N((n+1)/N)=X_N(n/N)+N^{-1/2}\sig(X_N(n/N))\xi(n))+N^{-1}b(X_N(n/N))\xi(n)$, $n=0,1,...,[TN]$ where $\sig$ and $b$ are smooth matrix and vector functions, respectively, $\xi$ is a centered stationary vector stochastic process and $\ve, 1/N$ are small parameters. We derive, first, estimates in the strong invariance principles for sums $S_{N}(t)=N^{-1/2}\sum_{0\leq k< [Nt]}\xi(k)$ and iterated sums $\bbS^{ij}_{N}(t)=N^{-1}\sum_{0\leq k<l<[Nt]}\xi_i(k)\xi_j(l)$ together with the corresponding results for integrals in the continuous time case which, in fact, yields almost sure invariance principles for iterated sums and integrals of any order and, moreover, implies laws of iterated logarithm for these objects. Then, relying on the rough paths theory, we obtain strong almost sure approximations of processes $X^\ve$ and $X_N$ by corresponding diffusion processes $\Xi^\ve$ and $\Xi_N$, respectively. Previous results for the above setup dealt either with weak or moment diffusion approximations and not with almost sure approximation which is the new and natural generalization of well known works on strong invariance principles for sums of weakly dependent random variables.

Besov rough path analysis

Rough path analysis is developed in the full Besov scale. This extends, and essentially concludes, an investigation started by [Pr\"omel--Trabs, Rough differential equations driven by signals in {B}esov spaces. J. Diff. Equ. 2016], further studied in a series of papers by Liu, Pr\"omel and Teichmann. A new Besov sewing lemma, a real-analysis result of interest in its own right, plays a key role, and the flexibility in the choice of Besov parameters allows for the treatment of equations not available in the H\"older or variation settings. Important classes of stochastic processes fit in the present framework.

A McKean-Vlasov SDE and particle system with interaction from reflecting boundaries

We consider a one-dimensional McKean-Vlasov SDE on a domain and the associated mean-field interacting particle system. The peculiarity of this system is the combination of the interaction, which keeps the average position prescribed, and the reflection at the boundaries; these two factors make the effect of reflection non local. We show pathwise well-posedness for the McKean-Vlasov SDE and convergence for the particle system in the limit of large particle number.

Rough semimartingales and $p$-variation estimates for martingale transforms

We establish a new scale of $p$-variation estimates for martingale paraproducts, martingale transforms, and It\^o integrals, of relevance in rough paths theory, stochastic, and harmonic analysis. As an application, we introduce rough semimartingales, a common generalization of classical semimartingales and (controlled) rough paths, and their integration theory.

Varieties of Signature Tensors

The signature of a parametric curve is a sequence of tensors whose entries are iterated integrals. This construction is central to the theory of rough paths in stochastic analysis. It is here examined through the lens of algebraic geometry. We introduce varieties of signature tensors for both deterministic paths and random paths. For the former, we focus on piecewise linear paths, on polynomial paths, and on varieties derived from free nilpotent Lie groups. For the latter, we focus on Brownian motion and its mixtures.

Pathwise McKean-Vlasov Theory with Additive Noise

Abstract. We take a pathwise approach to classical McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations with additive noise, as e.g. exposed in Sznitmann [38]. Our study was prompted by some concrete problems in battery modelling [23], and also by recent progrss on rough-pathwise McKean-Vlasov theory, notably Cass-Lyons [10], and then Bailleul, Catellier and Delarue [4]. Such a "pathwise McKean-Vlasov theory" can be traced back to Tanaka [40]. This paper can be seen as an attempt to advertize the ideas, power and simplicity of the pathwise appproach, not so easily extracted from [4, 10, 40], together with a number of novel applications. These include mean field convergence without a priori independence and exchangeability assumption; common noise, c\`adl\`ag noise, and reflecting boundaries. Last not least, we generalize Dawson-G\"artner large deviations and the central limit theorem to a non-Brownian noise setting.

Existence, uniqueness and stability of semi-linear rough partial differential equations

We prove well-posedness and rough path stability of a class of linear and semi-linear rough PDE's on $\mathbb{R}^d$ using the variational approach. This includes well-posedness of (possibly degenerate) linear rough PDE's in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$, and then -- based on a new method -- energy estimates for non-degenerate linear rough PDE's. We accomplish this by controlling the energy in a properly chosen weighted $L^2$-space, where the weight is given as a solution of an associated backward equation. These estimates then allow us to extend well-posedness for linear rough PDE's to semi-linear perturbations.

Pathwise stability of likelihood estimators for diffusions via rough paths

We consider the classical estimation problem of an unknown drift parameter within classes of nondegenerate diffusion processes. Using rough path theory (in the sense of T. Lyons), we analyze the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) with regard to its pathwise stability properties as well as robustness toward misspecification in volatility and even the very nature of the noise. Two numerical examples demonstrate the practical relevance of our results.

Varadhan's formula, conditioned diffusions, and local volatilities

Motivated by marginals-mimicking results for Itô processes via SDEs and by their applications to volatility modeling in finance, we discuss the weak convergence of the law of a hypoelliptic diffusions conditioned to belong to a target affine subspace at final time, namely $\mathcal{L}(Z_t|Y_t = y)$ if $X_{\cdot}=(Y_\cdot,Z_{\cdot})$. To do so, we revisit Varadhan-type estimates in a small-noise regime (as opposed to small-time), studying the density of the lower-dimensional component $Y$. The application to stochastic volatility models include the small-time and, for certain models, the large-strike asymptotics of the Gyongy-Dupire's local volatility function. The final product are asymptotic formulae that can (i) motivate parameterizations of the local volatility surface and (ii) be used to extrapolate local volatilities in a given model.

Option Pricing in the Moderate Deviations Regime

We consider call option prices in diffusion models close to expiry, in an asymptotic regime ("moderately out of the money") that interpolates between the well-studied cases of at-the-money options and out-of-the-money fixed-strike options. First and higher order small-time moderate deviation estimates of call prices and implied volatility are obtained. The expansions involve only simple expressions of the model parameters, and we show in detail how to calculate them for generic local and stochastic volatility models. Some numerical examples for the Heston model illustrate the accuracy of our results.

On the probability density function of baskets

The state price density of a basket, even under uncorrelated Black-Scholes dynamics, does not allow for a closed from density. (This may be rephrased as statement on the sum of lognormals and is especially annoying for such are used most frequently in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics.) In this note we discuss short time and small volatility expansions, respectively. The method works for general multi-factor models with correlations and leads to the analysis of a system of ordinary (Hamiltonian) differential equations. Surprisingly perhaps, even in two asset Black-Scholes situation (with its flat geometry), the expansion can degenerate at a critical (basket) strike level; a phenomena which seems to have gone unnoticed in the literature to date. Explicit computations relate this to a phase transition from a unique to more than one "most-likely" paths (along which the diffusion, if suitably conditioned, concentrates in the afore-mentioned regimes). This also provides a (quantifiable) understanding of how precisely a presently out-of-money basket option may still end up in-the-money.

General Rough integration, Levy Rough paths and a Levy--Kintchine type formula

We consider rough paths with jumps. In particular, the analogue of Lyons' extension theorem and rough integration are established in a jump setting, offering a pathwise view on stochastic integration against cadlag processes. A class of Levy rough paths is introduced and characterized by a sub-ellipticity condition on the left-invariant diffusion vector fields and and a certain integrability property of the Carnot--Caratheodory norm with respect to the Levy measure on the group, using Hunt's framework of Lie group valued Levy processes. Examples of Levy rough paths include standard multi-dimensional Levy process enhanced with stochastic area as constructed by D. Williams, the pure area Poisson process and Brownian motion in a magnetic field. An explicit formula for the expected signature is given.

Stochastic control with rough paths

We study a class of controlled rough differential equations. It is shown that the value function satisfies a HJB type equation; we also establish a form of the Pontryagin maximum principle. Deterministic problems of this type arise in the duality theory for controlled diffusion processes and typically involve anticipating stochastic analysis. We propose a formulation based on rough paths and then obtain a generalization of Roger's duality formula [L. C. G. Rogers, 2007] from discrete to continuous time. We also make the link to old work of [Davis--Burstein, 1987].

Physical Brownian motion in magnetic field as rough path

The indefinite integral of the homogenized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is a well-known model for physical Brownian motion, modelling the behaviour of an object subject to random impulses [L. S. Ornstein, G. E. Uhlenbeck: On the theory of Brownian Motion. In: Physical Review. 36, 1930, 823-841]. One can scale these models by changing the mass of the particle and in the small mass limit one has almost sure uniform convergence in distribution to the standard idealized model of mathematical Brownian motion. This provides one well known way of realising the Wiener process. However, this result is less robust than it would appear and important generic functionals of the trajectories of the physical Brownian motion do not necessarily converge to the same functionals of Brownian motion when one takes the small mass limit. In presence of a magnetic field the area process associated to the physical process converges - but not to Lévy's stochastic area. As this area is felt generically in settings where the particle interacts through force fields in a nonlinear way, the remark is physically significant and indicates that classical Brownian motion, with its usual stochastic calculus, is not an appropriate model for the limiting behaviour. We compute explicitly the area correction term and establish convergence, in the small mass limit, of the physical Brownian motion in the rough path sense. The small mass limit for the motion of a charged particle in the presence of a magnetic field is, in distribution, an easily calculable, but "non-canonical" rough path lift of Brownian motion. Viewing the trajectory of a charged Brownian particle with small mass as a rough path is informative and allows one to retain information that would be lost if one only considered it as a classical trajectory. We comment on the importance of this point of view.

Rough path stability of (semi-)linear SPDEs

We give meaning to linear and semi-linear (possibly degenerate) parabolic partial differential equations with (affine) linear rough path noise and establish stability in a rough path metric. In the case of enhanced Brownian motion (Brownian motion with its Lévy area) as rough path noise the solution coincides with the standard variational solution of the SPDE.

Doob--Meyer for rough paths

Recently, Hairer--Pillai proposed the notion of $θ$-roughness of a path which leads to a deterministic Norris lemma. In the Gubinelli framework (Hoelder, level 2) of rough paths, they were then able to prove a Hoermander type result (SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion, $H>1/3$). We take a step back and propose a natural "roughness" condition relative to a given $p$-rough path in the sense of Lyons; the aim being a Doob-Meyer result for rough integrals in the sense of Lyons. The interest in our (weaker) condition is that it is immediately verified for large classes of Gaussian processes, also in infinite dimensions. We conclude with an application to non-Markovian system under Hoermander's condition.
