Doob--Meyer for rough paths

Recently, Hairer--Pillai proposed the notion of $θ$-roughness of a path which leads to a deterministic Norris lemma. In the Gubinelli framework (Hoelder, level 2) of rough paths, they were then able to prove a Hoermander type result (SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion, $H>1/3$). We take a step back and propose a natural "roughness" condition relative to a given $p$-rough path in the sense of Lyons; the aim being a Doob-Meyer result for rough integrals in the sense of Lyons. The interest in our (weaker) condition is that it is immediately verified for large classes of Gaussian processes, also in infinite dimensions. We conclude with an application to non-Markovian system under Hoermander's condition.

Convergence rates for the full Gaussian rough paths

Under the key assumption of finite ρ-variation, ρ\in[1,2), of the covariance of the underlying Gaussian process, sharp a.s. convergence rates for approximations of Gaussian rough paths are established. When applied to Brownian resp. fractional Brownian motion (fBM), ρ=1 resp. ρ=1/(2H), we recover and extend the respective results of [Hu--Nualart; Rough path analysis via fractional calculus; TAMS 361 (2009) 2689-2718] and [Deya--Neuenkirch--Tindel; A Milstein-type scheme without Lévy area terms for SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion; AIHP (2011)]. In particular, we establish an a.s. rate k^{-(1/ρ-1/2-ε)}, any ε>0, for Wong-Zakai and Milstein-type approximations with mesh-size 1/k. When applied to fBM this answers a conjecture in the afore-mentioned references.

Integrability of (non-)linear rough differential equations and integrals

Integrability properties of (classical, linear, linear growth) rough differential equations (RDEs) are considered, the Jacobian of the RDE flow driven by Gaussian signals being a motivating example. We revisit and extend some recent ground-breaking work of Cass-Litterer-Lyons in this regard; as by-product, we obtain a user-friendly "transitivity property" of such integrability estimates. We also consider rough integrals; as a novel application, uniform Weibull tail estimates for a class of (random) rough integrals are obtained. A concrete example arises from the stochastic heat-equation, spatially mollified by hyper-viscosity, and we can recover (in fact: sharpen) a technical key result of [Hairer, Comm.PureAppl.Math.64,no.11,(2011),1547-1585].

Don't stay local - extrapolation analytics for Dupire's local volatility

A robust implementation of a Dupire type local volatility model is an important issue for every option trading floor. Typically, this (inverse) problem is solved in a two step procedure : (i) a smooth parametrization of the implied volatility surface; (ii) computation of the local volatility based on the resulting call price surface. Point (i), and in particular how to extrapolate the implied volatility in extreme strike regimes not seen in the market, has been the subject of numerous articles, starting with Lee (Math. Finance, 2004). In the present paper we give direct analytic insights into the asymptotic behavior of local volatility at extreme strikes.

A note on higher dimensional $p$-variation

We discuss $p$-variation regularity of real-valued functions defined on $[0,T]^2$, based on rectangular increments. When $p>1$, there are two slightly different notions of $p$-variation; both of which are useful in the context of Gaussian rough paths. Unfortunately, these concepts were blurred in previous works; the purpose of this note is to show that the aforementioned notions of $p$-variations are "$ε$-close". In particular, all arguments relevant for Gaussian rough paths go through with minor notational changes.

A (rough) pathwise approach to a class of non-linear stochastic partial differential equations

We consider nonlinear parabolic evolution equations of the form $\partial_{t}u=F(t,x,Du,D^{2}u) $, subject to noise of the form $H(x,Du) \circ dB$ where $H$ is linear in $Du$ and $\circ dB$ denotes the Stratonovich differential of a multidimensional Brownian motion. Motivated by the essentially pathwise results of [Lions, P.-L. and Souganidis, P.E.; Fully nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations. C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math. 326 (1998), no. 9] we propose the use of rough path analysis [Lyons, T. J.; Differential equations driven by rough signals. Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 14 (1998), no. 2, 215--310] in this context. Although the core arguments are entirely deterministic, a continuity theorem allows for various probabilistic applications (limit theorems, support, large deviations, ...).

Semi-Closed Form Cubature and Applications to Financial Diffusion Models

Cubature methods, a powerful alternative to Monte Carlo due to Kusuoka~[Adv.~Math.~Econ.~6, 69--83, 2004] and Lyons--Victoir~[Proc.~R.~Soc.\\Lond.~Ser.~A 460, 169--198, 2004], involve the solution to numerous auxiliary ordinary differential equations. With focus on the Ninomiya-Victoir algorithm~[Appl.~Math.~Fin.~15, 107--121, 2008], which corresponds to a concrete level $5$ cubature method, we study some parametric diffusion models motivated from financial applications, and exhibit structural conditions under which all involved ODEs can be solved explicitly and efficiently. We then enlarge the class of models for which this technique applies, by introducing a (model-dependent) variation of the Ninomiya-Victoir method. Our method remains easy to implement; numerical examples illustrate the savings in computation time.

On the splitting-up method for rough (partial) differential equations

This article introduces the splitting method to systems responding to rough paths as external stimuli. The focus is on nonlinear partial differential equations with rough noise but we also cover rough differential equations. Applications to stochastic partial differential equations arising in control theory and nonlinear filtering are given.

Backward stochastic differential equations with rough drivers

Backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) in the sense of Pardoux-Peng [Backward stochastic differential equations and quasilinear parabolic partial differential equations, Lecture Notes in Control and Inform. Sci., 176, 200--217, 1992] provide a non-Markovian extension to certain classes of non-linear partial differential equations; the non-linearity is expressed in the so-called driver of the BSDE. Our aim is to deal with drivers which have very little regularity in time. To this end we establish continuity of BSDE solutions with respect to rough path metrics in the sense of Lyons [Differential equations driven by rough signals. Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 14, no. 2, 215--310, 1998] and so obtain a notion of "BSDE with rough driver". Existence, uniqueness and a version of Lyons' limit theorem in this context are established. Our main tool, aside from rough path analysis, is the stability theory for quadratic BSDEs due to Kobylanski [Backward stochastic differential equations and partial differential equations with quadratic growth. Ann. Probab., 28(2):558--602, 2000].

A generalized Fernique theorem and applications

We prove a generalisation of Fernique's theorem which applies to a class of (measurable) functionals on abstract Wiener spaces by using the isoperimetric inequality. Our motivation comes from rough path theory where one deals with iterated integrals of Gaussian processes (which are generically not Gaussian). Gaussian integrability with explicitly given constants for variation and Hölder norms of the (fractional) Brownian rough path, Gaussian rough paths and the Banach space valued Wiener process enhanced with its Lévy area [Ledoux, Lyons, Quian. "Lévy area of Wiener processes in Banach spaces". Ann. Probab., 30(2):546--578, 2002] then all follow from applying our main theorem.

From random walks to rough paths

Donsker's invariance principle is shown to hold for random walks in rough path topology. As application, we obtain Donsker-type weak limit theorems for stochastic integrals and differential equations.

Non-standard approximations of the Ito-map

The Wong-Zakai theorem asserts that ODEs driven by "reasonable" (e.g. piecewise linear) approximations of Brownian motion converge to the corresponding Stratonovich stochastic differential equation. With the aid of rough path analysis, we study "non-reasonable" approximations and go beyond a well-known criterion of [Ikeda--Watanabe, North Holland 1989] in the sense that our result applies to perturbations on all levels, exhibiting additional drift terms involving any iterated Lie brackets of the driving vector fields. In particular, this applies to the approximations by McShane ('72) and Sussmann ('91). Our approach is not restricted to Brownian driving signals. At last, these ideas can be used to prove optimality of certain rough path estimates.

Partial differential equations driven by rough paths

We study a class of linear first and second order partial differential equations driven by weak geometric $p$-rough paths, and prove the existence of a unique solution for these equations. This solution depends continuously on the driving rough path. This allows a robust approach to stochastic partial differential equations. In particular, we may replace Brownian motion by more general Gaussian and Markovian noise. Support theorems and large deviation statements all became easy corollaries of the corresponding statements of the driving process. In the case of first order equations with Gaussian noise, we discuss the existence of a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure for the solution.

Non-degeneracy of Wiener functionals arising from rough differential equations

Malliavin Calculus is about Sobolev-type regularity of functionals on Wiener space, the main example being the Ito map obtained by solving stochastic differential equations. Rough path analysis is about strong regularity of solution to (possibly stochastic) differential equations. We combine arguments of both theories and discuss existence of a density for solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by a general class of non-degenerate Gaussian processes, including processes with sample path regularity worse than Brownian motion.

Differential Equations Driven by Gaussian Signals II

Large classes of multi-dimensional Gaussian processes can be enhanced with stochastic Levy area(s). In a previous paper, we gave sufficient and essentially necessary conditions, only involving variational properties of the covariance. Following T. Lyons, the resulting lift to a "Gaussian rough path" gives a robust theory of (stochastic) differential equations driven by Gaussian signals with sample path regularity worse than Brownian motion. The purpose of this sequel paper is to establish convergence of Karhunen-Loeve approximations in rough path metrics. Particular care is necessary since martingale arguments are not enough to deal with third iterated integrals. An abstract support criterion for approximately continuous Wiener functionals then gives a description of the support of Gaussian rough paths as the closure of the (canonically lifted) Cameron-Martin space.

Isoperimetry and Rough Path Regularity

Optimal sample path properties of stochastic processes often involve generalized Hölder- or variation norms. Following a classical result of Taylor, the exact variation of Brownian motion is measured in terms of $ψ(x) \equiv $ $x^{2}/\log \log (1/x) $ near $0+$. Such $ψ$-variation results extend to classes of processes with values in abstract metric spaces. (No Gaussian or Markovian properties are assumed.) To establish integrability properties of the $ψ$-variation we turn to a large class of Gaussian rough paths (e.g. Brownian motion and Lévy's area viewed as a process in a Lie group) and prove Gaussian integrability properties using Borell's inequality on abstract Wiener spaces. The interest in such results is that they are compatible with rough path theory and yield certain sharp regularity and integrability properties (for iterated Stratonovich integrals, for example) which would be difficult to obtain otherwise. At last, $ψ$-variation is identified as robust regularity property of solutions to (random) rough differential equations beyond semimartingales.

On Uniformly Subelliptic Operators and Stochastic Area

We consider uniformly subelliptic operators on certain unimodular Lie groups of polynomial growth. It was shown by Saloff-Coste and Stroock that classical results of De Giorgi, Nash, Moser, Aronson extend to this setting. It was then observed by Sturm that many proofs extend naturally to the setting of locally compact Dirichlet spaces. We relate these results to what is known as rough path theory by showing that they provide a natural and powerful analytic machinery for construction and study of (random) geometric Hoelder rough paths. (In particular, we obtain a simple construction of the Lyons-Stoica stochastic area for a diffusion process with uniformly elliptic generator in divergence form.) Our approach then enables us to establish a number of far-reaching generalizations of classical theorems in diffusion theory including Wong-Zakai approximations, Freidlin-Wentzell sample path large deviations and the Stroock-Varadhan support theorem. The latter was conjectured by T. Lyons in his recent St. Flour lecture.
