Overcoming correlation fluctuations in two-photon interference experiments with differently bright and independently blinking remote quantum emitters

As a fundamental building block for quantum computation and communication protocols, the correct verification of the two-photon interference (TPI) contrast between two independent quantum light sources is of utmost importance. Here, we experimentally demonstrate how frequently present blinking dynamics and changes in emitter brightness critically affect the Hong-Ou-Mandel-type (HOM) correlation histograms of remote TPI experiments measured via the commonly utilized setup configuration. We further exploit this qualitative and quantitative explanation of the observed correlation dynamics to establish an alternative interferometer configuration, which is overcoming the discussed temporal fluctuations, giving rise to an error-free determination of the remote TPI visibility. We prove full knowledge of the obtained correlation by reproducing the measured correlation statistics via Monte-Carlo simulations. As exemplary system, we make use of two pairs of remote semiconductor quantum dots, however, the same conclusions apply for TPI experiments with flying qubits from any kind of remote solid state quantum emitters.

Tuning emission energy and fine structure splitting in quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band

We report on optical investigations of MOVPE-grown InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots emitting at the telecom O-band that were integrated onto uniaxial piezoelectric actuators. This promising technique, which does not degrade the optical quality or performances of the quantum emitters, enables us to tune the quantum dot emission wavelengths and their fine-structure splitting. By spectrally analyzing the emitted light with respect to its polarization, we are able to demonstrate the cancelation of the fine structure splitting within the experimental resolution limit. This work represents an important step towards the high-yield generation of entangled photon pairs at telecommunication wavelength, together with the capability to precisely tune the emission to target wavelengths.

Single-photon interaction between two quantum dots located in different cavities of a weakly coupled double microdisk structure

We report on the radiative interaction of two single quantum dots (QDs) each in a separate InP/GaInP-based microdisk cavity via resonant whispering gallery modes. The investigations are based on ab initio coupled disk modes. We apply optical spectroscopy involving a $4f$-setup, as well as mode-selective real space imaging and photoluminescence mapping to discern single QDs coupled to a resonant microdisk mode. Excitation of one disk of the double cavity structure and detecting photoluminescene from the other yields proof of single photon emission of a QD excited by incoherent energy transfer from one disk to the other via a mode in the weak coupling regime. Finally, we present evidence of photons emitted by a QD in one disk that are transferred to the other disk by a resonant mode and are subsequently resonantly scattered by another QD.

Hyper-entanglement of photons emitted by a quantum dot

Entanglement is a unique quantum mechanical attribute and a fundamental resource of quantum technologies. Entanglement can be achieved in various individual degrees of freedom, nonetheless some systems are able to create simultaneous entanglement in multiple degrees of freedom - hyper-entanglement. A hyper-entangled state of light represents a valuable tool capable of reducing the experimental requirements and resource overheads and it can improve the success rate of quantum information protocols. Here, we report on demonstration of polarization and time-bin hyper-entangled photons emitted from a single quantum dot. We achieved this result by applying resonant and coherent excitation on a quantum dot system with marginal fine structure splitting. Our results yield fidelities to the maximally entangled state of 0.81(6) and 0.87(4) in polarization and time-bin, respectively.

Phase super-resolution with N00N states generated by on demand single-photon sources

Multi-photon entangled states such as `N00N states' have attracted a lot of attention because of their possible application in high-precision phase measurements. So far, N00N states have been generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources and by mixing quantum and classical light on a beam splitter. However, single-photon on demand sources promise to be more efficient and scalable than down-conversion sources which are probabilistic in nature. Here, we demonstrate super-resolving phase measurements based on two-photon N00N states generated by a quantum dot single-photon source utilizing the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect on a beam splitter. The quantum dot was excited through a two-photon resonant excitation scheme. Using a $π$-pulse, this results in the deterministic generation of indistinguishable single photons from both, the biexciton and exciton radiative recombination processes. Launching either type of the photons into both inputs of an interferometer, phase super-resolution, i.e. an interference fringe spacing with doubled rate relative to the single photon rate has been observed for both transitions. Interference visibilities of $V_{N=2,\mathit{XX}}=0.54\pm0.01$ for the biexciton and $V_{N=2,\mathit{X}}=0.46\pm0.02$ for the exciton transition have been obtained, respectively.

Cavity-enhanced simultaneous dressing of quantum dot exciton and biexciton states

We demonstrate the simultaneous dressing of both vacuum-to-exciton and exciton-to-biexciton transitions of a single semiconductor quantum dot in a high-Q micropillar cavity, using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Resonant two-photon excitation of the biexciton is achieved by spectrally tuning the quantum dot emission with respect to the cavity mode. The cavity couples to both transitions and amplifies the Rabi-frequency of the likewise resonant cw laser, driving the transitions. We observe strong-field splitting of the emission lines, which depend on the driving Rabi field amplitude and the cavity-laser detuning. A dressed state theory of a driven 4-level atom correctly predicts the distinct spectral transitions observed in the emission spectrum, and a detailed description of the emission spectra is further provided through a polaron master equation approach which accounts for cavity coupling and acoustic phonon interactions of the semiconductor medium.

Faraday Filtering on the Cs-D$_1$-Line for Quantum Hybrid Systems

Narrow-band filtering of light is widely used in optical spectroscopy. Atomic filters, which rely on the Faraday effect, allow for GHz-wide transmission spectra, which are intrinsically matched to an atomic transition. We present an experimental realization and a theoretical study of a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) based on cesium and its D$_1$-line-transition ($6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow6^2P_{1/2}$) around 894nm. We also present the prospects and visions for combining this filter with the single photon emission of a single quantum dot (QD), which matches with the atomic transition.

Monolithic on-chip integration of semiconductor waveguides, beamsplitters and single-photon sources

The implementation of a fully integrated Hadamard gate on one single chip is currently one of the major goals in the quantum computation and communication community. Prerequisites for such a chip are the integration of single-photon sources and detectors into waveguide structures such as photonic crystals or slab and ridge waveguide. Here, we present an implementation of a single-photon on-chip experiment based on a III-V semiconductor platform. Individual semiconductor quantum dots were used as pulsed single-photon sources integrated in ridge waveguides, and on-chip waveguide-beamsplitter operation is verified on the single-photon level by performing off-chip photon cross-correlation measurements between the two output ports of the beamsplitter. A careful characterization of the waveguide propagation losses (~ 0.0068 dB/um) documents the applicability of such GaAs-based waveguide structures in more complex photonic integrated circuits. The presented work marks an important step towards the realization of fully integrated photonic quantum circuits including on-demand single-photon sources.

On-demand generation of indistinguishable polarization-entangled photon pairs

An on-demand source of indistinguishable and entangled photon pairs is a fundamental component for different quantum information applications such as optical quantum computing, quantum repeaters, quantum teleportation and quantum communication. Parametric down-conversion and four-wave mixing sources of entangled photons have shown high degrees of entanglement and indistinguishability but the probabilistic nature of their generation process also creates zero or multiple photon pairs following a Poissonian distribution. This limits their use in complex algorithms where many qubits and gate operations are required. Here we show simultaneously ultra-high purity (g^(2)(0) < 0.004), high entanglement fidelity (0.81 +/- 0.02), high two-photon interference non-post selective visibilities (0.86 +/- 0.03 and 0.71 +/- 0.04) and on-demand generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs from a single semiconductor quantum dot. Through a two-photon resonant excitation scheme, the biexciton population is deterministically prepared by a Pi-pulse. Applied on a quantum dot showing no exciton fine structure splitting, this results in the deterministic generation of indistinguishable entangled photon pairs.

Post-selected indistinguishable single-photon emission from the Mollow triplet sidebands of a resonantly excited quantum dot

Applying high power continuous-wave resonant s-shell excitation to a single self-assembled In- GaAs quantum dot, we demonstrate the generation of post-selected single-indistinguishable photons from the Mollow triplet sidebands. A sophisticated spatial filtering technique based on a double Michelson interferometer enabled us to separate the spectrally close lying individual Mollow components and perform almost background free two-photon interference measurements. Showing high consistency with the results of an independent determination of the emission coherence of 250 +/- 30 ps, our analysis reveals a close to ideal visibility contrast of up to 97 %. Due to their easy spectral tunability and their distinct advantage of cascaded photon emission between the individual Mollow sidebands, they resemble a versatile tool for quantum information applications.

Detuning-Dependent Mollow Triplet of a Coherently-Driven Single Quantum Dot

We present both experimental and theoretical investigations of a laser-driven quantum dot (QD) in the dressed-state regime of resonance fluorescence. We explore the role of phonon scattering and pure dephasing on the detuning-dependence of the Mollow triplet and show that the triplet sidebands may spectrally broaden or narrow with increasing detuning. Based on a polaron master equation approach which includes electron-phonon interaction nonperturbatively, we derive a fully analytical expression for the spectrum. With respect to detuning dependence, we identify a crossover between the regimes of spectral sideband narrowing or broadening. A comparison of the theoretical predictions to detailed experimental studies on the laser detuning-dependence of Mollow triplet resonance emission from single In(Ga)As QDs reveals excellent agreement.

Visible-to-telecom quantum frequency conversion of light from a single quantum emitter

Quantum frequency conversion (QFC), a nonlinear optical process in which the frequency of a quantum light field is altered while conserving its non-classical correlations, was first demonstrated 20 years ago. Meanwhile, it is considered an essential tool for the implementation of quantum repeaters since it allows for interfacing quantum memories with telecom-wavelength photons as quantum information carriers. Here we demonstrate efficient (>30%) QFC of visible single photons (711 nm) emitted by a quantum dot (QD) to a telecom wavelength (1,313 nm). Analysis of the first and second-order coherence before and after wavelength conversion clearly proves that important properties, such as the coherence time and photon antibunching, are fully conserved during the frequency translation process. Our findings underline the great potential of single photon sources on demand in combination with QFC as a promising technique for quantum repeater schemes.

The phase boundary of superconducting niobium thin films with antidot arrays fabricated with microsphere photolithography

The experimental investigation of the $I_c(B)$--$T_c(B)$ phase boundary of superconducting niobium films with large area quasihexagonal hole arrays is reported. The hole arrays were patterned with microsphere photolithography. We investigate the perforated niobium films by means of electrical directed current transport measurements close to the transition temperature $T_c$ in perpendicularly applied magnetic fields. We find pronounced modulations of the critcal current with applied magnetic field, which we interpret as a consequence of commensurable states between the Abrikosov vortex lattice and the quasihexagonal pinning array. Furthermore, we observe Little-Parks oscillations in the critical temperature vs magnetic field.

Heralded Single-Photon Emission from the Mollow Triplet Sidebands of a Quantum Dot

Emission from a resonantly excited quantum emitter is a fascinating research topic within quantum optics and a useful source for different types of quantum light fields. The resonance spectrum consists of a single spectral line below saturation of a quantum emitter which develops into a triplet at powers above saturation of the emitter. The spectral properties of the triplet strongly depends on pump power and detuning of the excitation laser. The three closely spaced photon channels from the resonance fluorescence have different photon statistical signatures. We present a detailed photon-statistics analysis of the resonance fluorescence emission triplet from a solid state-based artificial atom, i.e. a semiconductor quantum dot. The photon correlation measurements demonstrate both 'single' and 'heralded' photon emission from the Mollow triplet sidebands. The ultra-bright and narrowband emission (5.9 MHz into the first lens) can be conveniently frequency-tuned by laser detuning over 15 times its linewidth ({Δν} \approx 1.0 GHz). These unique properties make the Mollow triplet sideband emission a valuable light source for, e.g.quantum light spectroscopy and quantum information applications.

Heterogeneous confinement in laterally coupled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot molecules under lateral electric fields

We study the electronic and optical properties of laterally coupled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot molecules under lateral electric field. We find that electrons perceive the double-dot structure as a compound single object, while the holes discern two well separated dots. Through a combination of predictive atomistic modeling, detailed morphology studies, and single object micro-photoluminescence measurements, we show that this peculiar confinement results in an unusual heterogeneous behavior of electrons and holes with profound consequences on optical properties.

Indistinguishable photons from the resonance fluorescence of a single quantum dot in a microcavity

We demonstrate purely resonant continuous-wave optical laser excitation to coherently prepare an excitonic state of a single semiconductor quantum dot (QDs) inside a high quality pillar microcavity. As a direct proof of QD resonance fluorescence, the evolution from a single emission line to the characteristic Mollow triplet10 is observed under increasing pump power. By controlled utilization of weak coupling between the emitter and the fundamental cavity mode through Purcell-enhancement of the radiative decay, a strong suppression of pure dephasing is achieved, which reflects in close to Fourier transform-limited and highly indistinguishable photons with a visibility contrast of 90%. Our experiments reveal the model-like character of the coupled QD-microcavity system as a promising source for the generation of ideal photons at the quantum limit. From a technological perspective, the vertical cavity symmetry -- with optional dynamic tunability -- provides strongly directed light emission which appears very desirable for future integrated emitter devices.

InP-quantum dots in Al0.20Ga0.80InP with different barrier configurations

Systematic ensemble photoluminescence studies have been performed on type-I InP-quantum dots in Al0.20Ga0.80InP barriers, emitting at approximately 1.85 eV at 5 K. The influence of different barrier configurations as well as the incorporation of additional tunnel barriers on the optical properties has been investigated. The confinement energy between the dot barrier and the surrounding barrier layers, which is the sum of the band discontinuities for the valence and the conduction bands, was chosen to be approximately 190 meV by using Al0.50Ga0.50InP. In combination with 2 nm thick AlInP tunnel barriers, the internal quantum efficiency of these barrier configurations can be increased by up to a factor of 20 at elevated temperatures with respect to quantum dots without such layers.
