Cosyzygy modules

We characterize all first cosyzygy modules of a given finitely generated module over a local ring. We do this by introducing the notion of a canonical cosyzygy module, and showing how other cosyzygy modules can be obtained from this module. As an application, we characterize Gorenstein rings via properties of canonical first cosyzygy modules.

On the cohomology of finite tensor categories

It has been conjectured that finite tensor categories have finitely generated cohomology. We show that this is equivalent to finitely generated Hochschild cohomology for the endomorphism algebras of the projective generators.

Asymptotic vanishing of cohomology in triangulated categories

Given a graded-commutative ring acting centrally on a triangulated category, our main result shows that if cohomology of a pair of objects of the triangulated category is finitely generated over the ring acting centrally, then the asymptotic vanishing of the cohomology is well-behaved. In particular, enough consecutive asymptotic vanishing of cohomology implies all eventual vanishing. Several key applications are also given.

On the representation type of a finite tensor category

Given an exact module category over a finite tensor category with finitely generated cohomology, we show that if there exists an object of complexity at least three, then the category is of wild representation type. In particular, if the Krull dimension of the cohomology ring of the finite tensor category is at least three, then this category is wild.

Multiplicity in triangulated categories

We lay out the theory of a multiplicity in the setting of a triangulated category having a central ring action from a graded-commutative ring $R$, in other words, an $R$-linear triangulated category. The invariant we consider is modelled on those for graded modules over a commutative graded ring. We show that this invariant is determined by the leading coefficients of the Hilbert polynomials expressing the lengths of certain Hom sets. Our theory is a natural analogue of Hochster's theta invariant for homology and Buchweitz's Herbrand difference for cohomology. Moreover, we give applications to vanishing of cohomology and modules over local complete intersection rings, group algebras of a finite group, and certain finite dimensional algebras.

Dimension and depth inequalities over complete intersections

For a pair of finitely generated modules $M$ and $N$ over a codimension $c$ complete intersection ring $R$ with $\ell(M\otimes_RN)$ finite, we pay special attention to the inequality $\dim M+\dim N \leq \dim R +c$. In particular, we develop an extension of Hochster's theta invariant whose nonvanishing detects equality. In addition, we consider a parallel theory where dimension and codimension are replaced by depth and complexity, respectively.

Support varieties for finite tensor categories: the tensor product property

We show that in a finite tensor category, the tensor product property holds for support varieties if and only if it holds between indecomposable periodic objects. We apply this to certain Hopf algebras in the form of skew group algebras. In particular, we show that the tensor product property holds for all objects in a symmetric finite tensor category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.

Support varieties without the tensor product property

We show that over a perfect field, every non-semisimple finite tensor category with finitely generated cohomology embeds into a larger such category where the tensor product property does not hold for support varieties.

Homology of complexes over finite tensor categories

We generalize a recent result by J.F. Carlson to finite tensor categories having finitely generated cohomology. Specifically, we show that if the Krull dimension of the cohomology ring is sufficiently large, then there exist infinitely many non-isomorphic and nontrivial bounded complexes of projective objects, and with small homology. We also prove a version for finite dimensional algebras with finitely generated cohomology.

Categorical matrix factorizations

In this paper we give a purely categorical construction of d-fold matrix factorizations of a natural transformation, for any even integer d. This recovers the classical definition of those for regular elements in commutative rings due to Eisenbud. We explore some natural functors between associated triangulated categories, and show that when d=2 these are full and faithful, and in some cases equivalences.

Separable equivalences, finitely generated cohomology and finite tensor categories

We show that finitely generated cohomology is invariant under separable equivalences for all algebras. As a result, we obtain a proof of the finite generation of cohomology for finite symmetric tensor categories in characteristic zero, as conjectured by Etingof and Ostrik. Moreover, for such categories we also determine the representation dimension and the Rouquier dimension of the stable category. Finally, we recover a number of results on the cohomology of stably equivalent and singularly equivalent algebras.

Support varieties for finite tensor categories: Complexity, realization, and connectedness

We advance support variety theory for finite tensor categories. First we show that the dimension of the support variety of an object equals the rate of growth of a minimal projective resolution as measured by the Frobenius-Perron dimension. Then we show that every conical subvariety of the support variety of the unit object may be realized as the support variety of an object. Finally, we show that the support variety of an indecomposable object is connected.

Matrix factorizations for self-orthogonal categories of modules

For a commutative ring $S$ and self-orthogonal subcategory $\mathsf{C}$ of $\mathsf{Mod}(S)$, we consider matrix factorizations whose modules belong to $\mathsf{C}$. Let $f\in S$ be a regular element. If $f$ is $M$-regular for every $M\in \mathsf{C}$, we show there is a natural embedding of the homotopy category of $\mathsf{C}$-factorizations of $f$ into a corresponding homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes. Moreover, we prove this is an equivalence if $\mathsf{C}$ is the category of projective or flat-cotorsion $S$-modules. Dually, using divisibility in place of regularity, we observe there is a parallel equivalence when $\mathsf{C}$ is the category of injective $S$-modules.

Modules of constant Jordan type over quantum complete intersections

We initiate the study of modules of constant Jordan type for quantum complete intersections, and prove a range of basic properties. We then show that for these algebras, constant Jordan type is an invariant of Auslander-Reiten components. Finally, we classify modules with stable constant Jordan type [1] or [n-1] in the 2-generator case.

On support varieties and tensor products for finite dimensional algebras

It has been asked whether there is a version of the tensor product property for support varieties over finite dimensional algebras defined in terms of Hochschild cohomology. We show that in general no such version can exist. In particular, we show that for certain quantum complete intersections, there are modules and bimodules for which the variety of the tensor product is not even contained in the variety of the one-sided module.

A generalized Dade's Lemma for local rings

We prove a generalized Dade's Lemma for quotients of local rings by ideals generated by regular sequences. That is, given a pair of finitely generated modules over such a ring with algebraically closed residue field, we prove a sufficient (and necessary) condition for the vanishing of all higher Ext or Tor of the modules. This condition involves the vanishing of all higher Ext or Tor of the modules over all quotients by a minimal generator of the ideal generated by the regular sequence.

Matrix factorizations for quantum complete intersections

We introduce twisted matrix factorizations for quantum complete intersections of codimension two. For such an algebra, we show that in a given dimension, almost all the indecomposable modules with bounded minimal projective resolutions correspond to such matrix factorizations.

The morphism axiom for n-angulated categories

The morphism axiom for n-angulated categories states that a morphism between the bases of two n-angles can be extended to a morphism of n-angles. We show that this axiom is redundant. For triangulated categories, this was proved by J.P. May.
