Realizability and the Avrunin-Scott theorem for higher-order support varieties

We introduce higher-order support varieties for pairs of modules over a commutative local complete intersection ring, and give a complete description of which varieties occur as such support varieties. In the context of a group algebra of a finite elementary abelian group, we also prove a higher-order Avrunin-Scott-type theorem, linking higher-order support varieties and higher-order rank varieties for pairs of modules.

Support varieties over complete intersections made easy

Using an alternate description of support varieties of pairs of modules over a complete intersection, we give several new applications of such varieties, including results for support varieties of intermediate complete intersections. Simpler proofs of known results are also given.

Complete intersections and equivalences with categories of matrix factorizations

We prove that one can realize certain triangulated subcategories of the singularity category of a complete intersection as homotopy categories of matrix factorizations. Moreover, we prove that for any commutative ring and non-zerodivisor, the homotopy category of matrix factorizations embeds into the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes of finitely generated projective modules over the factor ring.

Higher n-angulations from local rings

We show that the category of finitely generated free modules over certain local rings is n-angulated for every n at least 3. In fact, we construct several classes of n-angles, parametrized by equivalence classes of units in the local rings. Finally, we show that for odd values of n some of these n-angulated categories are not algebraic.

The Gorenstein defect category

We consider the homotopy category of complexes of projective modules over a Noetherian ring. Truncation at degree zero induces a fully faithful triangle functor from the totally acyclic complexes to the stable derived category. We show that if the ring is either Artin or commutative Noetherian local, then the functor is dense if and only if the ring is Gorenstein. Motivated by this, we define the Gorenstein defect category of the ring, a category which in some sense measures how far the ring is from being Gorenstein.

Homological algebra modulo exact zero-divisors

We study the homological behavior of modules over local rings modulo exact zero-divisors. We obtain new results which are in some sense "opposite" to those known for modules over local rings modulo regular elements.

The negative side of cohomology for Calabi-Yau categories

We study integer-graded cohomology rings defined over Calabi-Yau categories. We show that the cohomology in negative degree is a trivial extension of the cohomology ring in non-negative degree, provided the latter admits a regular sequence of central elements of length two. In particular, the product of elements of negative degrees are zero. As corollaries we apply this to Tate-Hochschild cohomology rings of symmetric algebras, and to Tate cohomology rings over group algebras. We also prove similar results for Tate cohomology rings over commutative local Gorenstein rings.

The Grothendieck group of an n-angulated category

We define the Grothendieck group of an n-angulated category and show that for odd n its properties are as in the special case of n=3, i.e. the triangulated case. In particular, its subgroups classify the dense and complete n-angulated subcategories via a bijective correspondence. For a tensor n-angulated category, the Grothendieck group becomes a ring, whose ideals classify the dense and complete n-angulated tensor ideals of the category.

The axioms for n-angulated categories

We discuss the axioms for an n-angulated category, recently introduced by Geiss, Keller and Oppermann. In particular, we introduce a higher octahedral axiom, and show that it is equivalent to the mapping cone axiom for an n-angulated category. For a triangulated category, the mapping cone axiom, our octahedral axiom and the classical octahedral axiom are all equivalent.

Tate-Hochschild homology and cohomology of Frobenius algebras

We study Tate-Hochschild homology and cohomology for a two-sided Noetherian Gorenstein algebra. These (co)homology groups are defined for all degrees, non-negative as well as negative, and they agree with the usual Hochschild (co)homology groups for all degrees larger than the injective dimension of the algebra. We prove certain duality theorems relating the Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups in positive degree to those in negative degree, in the case where the algebra is Frobenius. We explicitly compute all Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups for certain classes of Frobenius algebras, namely, certain quantum complete intersections.

Cohomological symmetry in triangulated categories

We give a criterion for cohomological symmetry in a triangulated category. As an application, we show that such cohomological symmetry holds for all pairs of modules over any exterior algebra.

The representation dimension of Hecke algebras and symmetric groups

We establish a lower bound for the representation dimension of all the classical Hecke algebras of types A, B and D. For all the type A algebras, and most of the algebras of types B and D, we also establish upper bounds. Moreover, we establish bounds for the representation dimension of group algebras of some symmetric groups.

Cluster tilting and complexity

We study the notion of positive and negative complexity of pairs of objects in cluster categories. The first main result shows that the maximal complexity occurring is either one, two or infinite, depending on the representation type of the underlying hereditary algebra. In the the second result, we study the bounded derived category of a cluster tilted algebra, and show that the maximal complexity occurring is either zero or one whenever the algebra is of finite or tame type.

The stable AR-quiver of a quantum complete intersection

We completely describe the tree classes of the components of the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver of a quantum complete intersection. In particular, we show that the tree class is always $A_{\infty}$ whenever the algebra is of wild representation type. Moreover, in the tame case, there is one component of tree class $\tilde{A}_{12}$, whereas all the other are of tree class $A_{\infty}$.

On the vanishing of homology for modules of finite complete intersection dimension

We prove rigidity type results on the vanishing of stable (co)homology for modules of finite complete intersection dimension, results which generalize and improve upon known results. We also introduce a notion of pre-rigidity, which generalizes phenomena for modules of finite complete intersection dimension and complexity one. Using this concept, we prove results on length and vanishing of homology modules.
