Small perturbations in generalized Cohen-Macaulay local rings

Let $(R, \frak m)$ be a generalized Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension $d$, and $f_1, \ldots, f_r$ a part of system of parameters of $R$. In this paper we give explicit numbers $N$ such that the lengths of all lower local cohomology modules and the Hilbert function of $R/(f_1, \ldots, f_r)$ are preserved when we perturbs the sequence $f_1, \ldots, f_r$ by $\varepsilon_1, \ldots, \varepsilon_r \in {\frak m}^N$. The second assertion extends a previous result of Srinivas and Trivedi for generalized Cohen-Macaulay rings.

A Note on Je{ś}manowicz' Conjecture for Non-primitive Pythagorean Triples

Let $(a, b, c)$ be a primitive Pythagorean triple parameterized as $a=u^2-v^2,\ b=2uv,\ c=u^2+v^2$,\ where $u>v>0$ are co-prime and not of the same parity. In 1956, L. Je{ś}manowicz conjectured that for any positive integer $n$, the Diophantine equation $(an)^x+(bn)^y=(cn)^z$ has only the positive integer solution $(x,y,z)=(2,2,2)$. In this connection we call a positive integer solution $(x,y,z)\ne (2,2,2)$ with $n>1$ exceptional. In 1999 M.-H. Le gave necessary conditions for the existence of exceptional solutions which were refined recently by H. Yang and R.-Q. Fu. In this paper we give a unified simple proof of the theorem of Le-Yang-Fu. Next we give necessary conditions for the existence of exceptional solutions in the case $v=2,\ u$ is an odd prime. As an application we show the truth of the Je{ś}manowicz conjecture for all prime values $u < 100$.

Frobenius test exponent for ideals generated by filter regular sequences

Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p>0$, and $t$ an integer such that $H_{\frak m}^j(R)/0^F_{H^j_{\frak m}(R)}$ has finite length for all $j<t$. The aim of this paper is to show that there exists an uniform bound for Frobenius test exponents of ideals generated by filter regular sequences of length at most $t$.

Asymptotic Lech's inequality

We explore the classical Lech's inequality relating the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicity and colength of an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal in a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$. We prove optimal versions of Lech's inequality for sufficiently deep ideals in characteristic $p>0$, and we conjecture that they hold in all characteristics. Our main technical result shows that if $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ has characteristic $p>0$ and $\widehat{R}$ is reduced, equidimensional, and has an isolated singularity, then for any sufficiently deep $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $I$, the colength and Hilbert--Kunz multiplicity of $I$ are sufficiently close to each other. More precisely, for all $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $N\gg0$ such that for any $I\subseteq R$ with $l(R/I)>N$, we have $(1-\varepsilon)l(R/I)\leq e_{HK}(I)\leq(1+\varepsilon)l(R/I)$.

Filter regular sequence under small perturbations

We answer affirmatively a question of Srinivas--Trivedi: in a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$, if $I=(f_1,\dots,f_r)$ is an ideal generated by a filter-regular sequence and $J$ is an ideal such that $I+J$ is $\mathfrak{m}$-primary, then there exists $N>0$ such that for any $\varepsilon_1,\dots,\varepsilon_r \in \mathfrak{m}^N$, we have an equality of Hilbert functions: $H(J, R/(f_1,\dots,f_r))(n)=H(J, R/(f_1+\varepsilon_1,\dots, f_r+\varepsilon_r))(n)$ for all $n\geq 0$. We also prove that the dimension of the non Cohen--Macaulay locus does not increase under small perturbations.

Upper bound of multiplicity in prime characteristic

Let $(R, \frak m)$ be a local ring of prime characteristic $p$ of dimension $d$ with the embedding dimension $v$. Suppose the Frobenius test exponent for parameter ideals $Fte(R)$ of $R$ is finite, and let $Q = p^{Fte(R)}$. It is shown that $$e(R) \le Q^{v-d} \binom{v}{d}.$$ We also improve our bound for $F$-nilpotent rings. Our result extends the main results of Huneke and Watanabe and of Katzman and Zhang.

Nilpotence of Frobenius actions on local cohomology and Frobenius closure of ideals

The study of Frobenius actions on local cohomology modules over a local ring of prime characteristic has interesting connections with the theory of tight closure. This paper establishes new connections by developing the notion of relative Frobenius actions on local cohomology. As an application, we show that a ring has $F$-nilpotent singularities if and only if the tight closure of every parameter ideal is equal to its Frobenius closure.

On the index of reducibility of parameter ideals: The stable and limit values

Let $(R, \frak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module of dimension $d$. A famous result of Northcott says that if $M$ is Cohen-Macaulay, then the index of reducibility of parameter ideals on $M$ is an invariant of the module. The aim of this paper is to extend Northcott's theorem for any finitely generated $R$-module. We call this invariant the stable value of the indices of reducibility of parameter ideals of $M$. We also introduce the limit value of the indices of reducibility of parameter ideals of $M$.

Lech's inequality, the Stückrad--Vogel conjecture, and uniform behavior of Koszul homology

Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring, and let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module of dimension $d$. We prove that the set $\left\{\frac{l(M/IM)}{e(I, M)} \right\}_{\sqrt{I}=\mathfrak{m}}$ is bounded below by ${1}/{d!e(\overline{R})}$ where $\overline{R}=R/Ann(M)$. Moreover, when $\widehat{M}$ is equidimensional, this set is bounded above by a finite constant depending only on $M$. The lower bound extends a classical inequality of Lech, and the upper bound answers a question of Stückrad--Vogel in the affirmative. As an application, we obtain results on uniform behavior of the lengths of Koszul homology modules.

On the uniform bound of Frobenius test exponents

In this paper we prove the existence of a uniform bound for Frobenius test exponents for parameter ideals of a local ring $(R, \frak m)$ of prime characteristic in the following cases: (1) $R$ is generalized Cohen-Macaulay. Our proof is much more simpler than the original proof of Huneke, Katzman, Sharp and Yao, (2) The Frobenius actions on all lower local cohomologies $H^i_{\frak m}(R)$, $i < \dim R$, are nilpotent.

Notes on the Frobenius test exponents

In this paper we show that the Frobenius test exponent for parameter ideals of a local ring of prime characteristic is always bigger than or equal to its Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik number. Our argument is based on an isomorphism of Nagel and Schenzel on local cohomology that we will provide an elementary proof.

On the length function of saturations of ideal powers

For an ideal $I$ in a local ring $(R, \fm)$, we prove that the integer-valued function $\ell_R(H^0_\fm(R/I^{n+1}))$ is a polynomial for $n$ big enough if either $I$ is a principle ideal or $I$ is generated by part of an almost p-standard system of parameters. Furthermore, we are able to compute the coefficients of this polynomial in terms of length of certain local cohomology modules and usual multiplicity if either the ideal is principal or it is generated by part of a standard system of parameters in a generalized Cohen-Macaulay ring. We also give an example of an ideal generated by part of a (general) system of parameters such that the function $\ell_R(H^0_\fm(R/I^{n+1}))$ is not a polynomial for $n\gg 0$.

Frobenius actions on local cohomology modules and deformation

Let $(R,m)$ be a Noetherian local ring of characteristic $p>0$. We introduce and study $F$-full and $F$-anti-nilpotent singularities, both are defined in terms of the Frobenius actions on the local cohomology modules of $R$ supported at the maximal ideal. We prove that if $R/(x)$ is $F$-full or $F$-anti-nilpotent for a nonzerodivisor $x\in R$, then so is $R$. We use these results to obtain new cases on the deformation of $F$-injectivity.

$F$-injectivity and Frobenius closure of ideals in Noetherian rings of characteristic $p>0$

The main aim of this article is to study the relation between $F$-injective singularity and the Frobenius closure of parameter ideals in Noetherian rings of positive characteristic. The paper consists of the following themes, including many other topics. We prove that if every parameter ideal of a Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p>0$ is Frobenius closed, then it is $F$-injective. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the injectivity of the Frobenius action on $H^i_{\fm}(R)$ for all $i \le f_{\fm}(R)$, where $f_{\fm}(R)$ is the finiteness dimension of $R$. As applications, we prove the following results. (a) If the ring is $F$-injective, then every ideal generated by a filter regular sequence, whose length is equal to the finiteness dimension of the ring, is Frobenius closed. It is a generalization of a recent result of Ma and which is stated for generalized Cohen-Macaulay local rings. (b) Let $(R,\fm,k)$ be a generalized Cohen-Macaulay ring of characteristic $p>0$. If the Frobenius action is injective on the local cohomology $H_{\fm}^i(R)$ for all $i < \dim R$, then $R$ is Buchsbaum. This gives an answer to a question of Takagi. We consider the problem when the union of two $F$-injective closed subschemes of a Noetherian $\mathbb{F}_p$-scheme is $F$-injective. Using this idea, we construct an $F$-injective local ring $R$ such that $R$ has a parameter ideal that is not Frobenius closed. This result adds a new member to the family of $F$-singularities. We give the first ideal-theoretic characterization of $F$-injectivity in terms the Frobenius closure and the limit closure. We also give an answer to the question about when the Frobenius action on the top local cohomology is injective.

Injective modules and torsion functors

A commutative ring is said to have ITI with respect to an ideal a if the a-torsion functor preserves injectivity of modules. Classes of rings with ITI or without ITI with respect to certain sets of ideals are identified. Behaviour of ITI under formation of rings of fractions, tensor products and idealisation is studied. Applications to local cohomology over non-noetherian rings are given.
