On the vanishing of local cohomology of the absolute integral closure in positive characteristic

The aim of this paper is to extend the main result of C. Huneke and G. Lyubeznik in [Adv. Math. 210 (2007), 498--504] to the class of rings that are images of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Namely, let $R$ be a local Noetherian domain of positive characteristic that is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that all local cohomology of $R$ (below the dimension) maps to zero in a finite extension of the ring. As a direct consequence we obtain that the absolute integral closure of $R$ is a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Since every excellent local ring is an image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, this result is a generalization of the main result of M. Hochster and Huneke in [Ann. of Math. 135 (1992), 45--79] with a simpler proof.

On the associated primes of local cohomology

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring of prime characteristic $p$. In this paper we give a short proof using filter regular sequences that the set of associated prime ideals of $H^t_I(R)$ is finite for any ideal $I$ and for any $t \ge 0$ when $R$ has finite $F$-representation type or finite singular locus. This extends a previous result by Takagi-Takahashi and gives affirmative answers for a problem of Huneke in many new classes of rings in positive characteristic. We also give a criterion about the singularities of $R$ (in any characteristic) to guarantee that the set of associated primes of $H^2_I(R)$ is always finite.

On the index of reducibility in Noetherian modules

Let $M$ be a finitely generated module over a Noetherian ring $R$ and $N$ a submodule. The index of reducibility ir$_M(N)$ is the number of irreducible submodules that appear in an irredundant irreducible decomposition of $N$ (this number is well defined by a classical result of Emmy Noether). Then the main results of this paper are: (1) $\mathrm{ir}_M(N) = \sum_{{\frak p} \in \mathrm{Ass}_R(M/N)} \dim_{k(\frak p)} \mathrm{Soc}(M/N)_{\frak p} $; (2) For an irredundant primary decomposition of $N = Q_1 \cap \cdots \cap Q_n$, where $Q_i$ is $\frak p_i$-primary, then $\mathrm{ir}_M(N) = \mathrm{ir}_M(Q_1) + \cdots + \mathrm{ir}_M(Q_n)$ if and only if $Q_i$ is a $\frak p_i$-maximal embedded component of $N$ for all embedded associated prime ideals $\frak p_i$ of $N$; (3) For an ideal $I$ of $R$ there exists a polynomial $\mathrm{Ir}_{M,I}(n)$ such that $\mathrm{Ir}_{M,I}(n)=\mathrm{ir}_M(I^nM)$ for $n\gg 0$. Moreover, $\mathrm{bight}_M(I)-1\le °(\mathrm{Ir}_{M,I}(n))\le \ell_M(I)-1$; (4) If $(R, \frak m)$ is local, $M$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if there exist an integer $l$ and a parameter ideal $\frak q$ of $M$ contained in $\frak m^l$ such that $\mathrm{ir}_M({\frak q}M)=\dim_k\mathrm{Soc}(H^d_{\frak m}(M))$, where $d=\dim M$.

A study of the length function of generalized fractions of modules

Let $(R, \frak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module of dimension $d$. Let $\underline{x} = x_1, ..., x_d$ be a system of parameters of $M$ and $\underline{n} = (n_1, ..., n_d)$ a $d$-tuple of positive integers. In this paper we study the length of generalized fractions $M (1/(x_1, ..., x_d, 1))$ which was introduced by Sharp and Hamieh in \cite{ShH85}. First, we study the growth of the function $J_{\underline{x}, M}(\underline{n}) = \ell(M (1/(x_1^{n_1}, ..., x_d^{n_d}, 1))) - n_1...n_d e(\underline{x};M)$. Then we give an explicit calculation for the function $J_{\underline{x}, M}(\underline{n})$ in the case where $M$ admits a Macaulayfication. Most previous results on this topic are now easy to understand and to improve.

Attached primes of local cohomology modules under localization and completion

Let $(R,\m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. Following I. G. Macdonald \cite{Mac}, the set of all attached primes of the Artinian local cohomology module $H^i_{\m}(M)$ is denoted by $\Att_R(H^i_{\m}(M))$. In \cite[Theorem 3.7]{Sh}, R. Y. Sharp proved that if $R$ is a quotient of a Gorenstein local ring then the shifted localization principle always holds true, i.e. $$ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \Att_{R_{\p}}\big(H^{i-\dim (R/\p)}_{\p R_{\p}}(M_{\p})\big)=\big\{\q R_{\p}\mid \q\in\Att_RH^i_{\m}(M), \q\subseteq \p\big\} \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (1)$$ for any local cohomology modules $H^i_{\m}(M)$ and any $\p\in\Spec (R).$ In this paper, we improve Sharp's result as follows: the shifted localization principle always holds true if and only if $R$ is universally catenary and all its formal fibers are Cohen-Macaulay, if and only if $$\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \displaystyle \Att_{\R}(H^i_{\m}(M))=\bigcup_{\p\in\Att_R(H^i_{\m}(M))}\Ass_{\R}(\R/\p\R)\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (2)$$ holds true for any finitely generated $R$-module $M$ and any integer $i\geq 0.$ This also improves the main result of the paper \cite{CN}.

A Splitting Theorem for Local Cohomology and its Applications

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. We show in this paper that, for an integer $t$, if the local cohomology module $H^{i}_\mathfrak{a}(M)$ with respect to an ideal $\frak a$ is finitely generated for all $i<t$, then $$H^{i}_\mathfrak{a}(M/xM)\cong H^{i}_\mathfrak{a}(M)\oplus H^{i+1}_\mathfrak{a}(M)$ for all $\frak a$-filter regular elements $x$ containing in a enough large power of $\frak a$ and all $i<t-1$. As consequences we obtain generalizations, by very short proofs, of the main results of M. Brodmann and A.L. Faghani (A finiteness result for associated primes of local cohomology modules, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 128(2000), 2851-2853) and of H.L. Truong and the first author (Asymptotic behavior of parameter ideals in generalized Cohen-Macaulay module, J. Algebra, 320(2008),158-168).
