New broad 8Be nuclear resonances

Energies, total and partial widths, and reduced width amplitudes of 8Be resonances up to an excitation energy of 26 MeV are extracted from a coupled channel analysis of experimental data. The presence of an extremely broad J^pi = 2^+ ``intruder'' resonance is confirmed, while a new 1^+ and very broad 4^+ resonance are discovered. A previously known 22 MeV 2^+ resonance is likely resolved into two resonances. The experimental J^pi T = 3^(+)? resonance at 22 MeV is determined to be 3^-0, and the experimental 1^-? (at 19 MeV) and 4^-? resonances to be isospin 0.

Gluonic charmonium resonances at BaBar and Belle?

We confront predictions for hybrid charmonium and other gluonic excitations in the charm region with recently observed structures in the mass range above 3 GeV. The Y(4260), if resonant, is found to agree with expectations for hybrid charmonium. The possibility that other gluonic excitations may be influencing the data in this region is discussed.

Hybrid and Conventional Baryons in the Flux-Tube and Quark Models

The status of conventional baryon flux-tubes and hybrid baryons is reviewed. Recent surprises are that a model prediction indicates that hybrid baryons are very weakly produced in glue-rich Psi decays, and an analysis of electro-production data concludes that the Roper resonance is not a hybrid baryon. The baryon decay flux-tube overlap has been calculated in the flux-tube model, and is discussed here. The behavior of the overlap follows naive expectations.

8Be Nuclear Data Evaluation

An R-matrix analysis of experimental nuclear data on the reactions 4He(alpha,alpha), 4He(alpha,p), 4He(alpha,d), 7Li(p,alpha), 7Li(p,p), 7Li(p,n), 7Be(n,p), 6Li(d,alpha), 6Li(d,p), 6Li(d,n) and 6Li(d,d), leading to the 8Be intermediate state, has been completed in the last two years. About 4700 data points from 69 experimental references are included. The excitation energy above the 8Be ground state is 25-26 MeV for all reactions except 4He(alpha,alpha) and 7Be(n,p). The data for the reactions 4He(alpha,alpha) and 6Li(d,d) do not fit well, but the other reactions fit with a chi^2/(point) of less than the overall value of 7.9. Most of the 19 resonances found in the R-matrix analysis correspond to resonances formerly known from experiment. Evaluated integrated 4He(alpha,p), 4He(alpha,d), 7Li(p,alpha), 7Li(p,n), 7Be(n,p), 6Li(d,alpha), 6Li(d,p) and 6Li(d,n) reaction cross-sections are presented. Evaluated cross-section and angular dependence files in ENDF format were prepared for the twelve reactions p 7Li, n 7Be, d 6Li -> alpha 4He, p 7Li, n 7Be, d 6Li. Maxwellian averaged temperature-dependent cross-sections in NDI format were prepared for the six reactions 7Li(p,alpha), 7Li(p,n), 7Be(n,p), 6Li(d,alpha), 6Li(d,p) and 6Li(d,n).

Selection rules for J^PC Exotic Hybrid Meson Decay in Large-N_c

The coupling of a neutral hybrid {1,3,5...}^-+ exotic particle (or current) to two neutral (hybrid) meson particles with the same J^PC and J=0 is proved to be sub-leading to the usual large-N_c QCD counting. The coupling of the same exotic particle to certain two - (hybrid) meson currents with the same J^PC and J=0 is also sub-leading. The decay of a {1,3,5...}^-+ hybrid to eta pi^0, eta' pi^0, eta' eta, eta(1295) pi^0, pi(1300)^0 pi0, eta(1440) pi^0, a_0(980)^0 sigma or f_0(980) sigma is sub-leading, assuming that these final state particles are (hybrid) mesons in the limit of large N_c.

Hybrid and Conventional Baryons in the Flux-Tube Model

Conventional and hybrid light quark baryons are constructed in the non-relativistic flux-tube model of Isgur and Paton, which is motivated by lattice QCD. The motion of the flux tube with the three quark positions fixed, except for center of mass corrections, is discussed. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to the independent motion of the junction and the strings connecting the junction to the quarks. The important role played by quark-exchange symmetry in constraining the flavor structure of (hybrid) baryons is emphasized. The flavor, quark spin S, total spin J, and parity P of the seven low-lying hybrid baryons are found to be N2(1/2)+, N2(3/2)+, Delta4(1/2)+, Delta4(3/2)+, and Delta4(5/2)+, where the notation is flavor[2S+1](J)P, and the N2(1/2)+ and N2(3/2)+ states are doublets. The motion of the three quarks in an adiabatic potential derived from the flux-tube dynamics is considered. A mass of 1870 +/- 100 MeV for the lightest nucleon hybrids is found by employing a variational method.

The isotensor pentaquark

Further consequences of the 1540 MeV Theta+ resonance as an isotensor pentaquark beyond Capstick et al. are explored. It is argued that the SAPHIR data may not currently exclude the existence of the charged partner Theta++. The usual prediction of the dominance of non-resonant Theta+ K, and Theta+ K*, final states in photoproduction on the proton is argued not to obtain for an isotensor Theta+. This enhances the importance of excited baryon final states, where the excited baryon decays to Theta+ K or Theta+ K*; as well as the non-resonant Theta+ K pi final state. The small width of the recently discovered Xi-- cascade resonance to Xi- pi- is easier to explain if Theta+ is an isotensor pentaquark than if it is in the 10bar representation, due to both an isospin and U-spin selection rule. A new production diagram for Theta+ in the photoproduction on the deuteron is suggested.

Interpretation of the Theta+ as an isotensor pentaquark with weakly decaying partners

The Theta+(1540), recently observed at LEPS, DIANA and CLAS, is hypothesized to be an isotensor resonance. This implies the existence of a multiplet where the Theta++, Theta+ and Theta0 have isospin-violating strong decays, and the Theta+++ and Theta- have weak decays and so are long-lived. Production mechanisms for these states are discussed. The J^P assignment of the Theta is most likely 1/2^- or 3/2^-.

Using pi_2(1670) -> b_1(1235) pi to Constrain Hadronic Models

We show that current analyses of experimental data indicate that the strong decay mode pi_2 -> b_1 pi is anomalously small. Non-relativistic quark models with spin-1 quark pair creation, such as ^3P_0, ^3S_1 and ^3D_1 models, as well as instanton and lowest order one-boson (in this case pi) emission models, can accommodate the analyses of experimental data, because of a quark-spin selection rule. Models and effects that violate this selection rule, such as higher order one-boson emission models, as well as mixing with other Fock states, may be constrained by the small pi_2 -> b_1 pi decay. This can provide a viability check on newly proposed decay mechanisms. We show that for mesons made up of a heavy quark and anti-quark, the selection rule is exact to all orders of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) perturbation theory.

Hybrid Baryons

We review the status of hybrid baryons. The only known way to study hybrids rigorously is via excited adiabatic potentials. Hybrids can be modelled by both the bag and flux-tube models. The low-lying hybrid baryon is N 1/2^+ with a mass of 1.5-1.8 GeV. Hybrid baryons can be produced in the glue-rich processes of diffractive gamma N and pi N production, Psi decays and p pbar annihilation.

Molecular States and 1^-+ Exotic Mesons

This work investigates whether the observed 1^-+ exotic mesons are molecular states. We first use a potential model to calculate the spectra and lifetimes of the f_0(980) and a_0(980), taken to be loosely bound molecular states of K Kbar, then apply the same scenario to the 1^-+ exotic states pi_1(1400) and pi_1(1600), assuming them to be pi eta(1295) and pi eta(1440) molecules respectively. We derive the effective potential in the framework of field theory at the hadronic level. Our results indicate that the present data on pi_1(1400) and pi_1(1600) rule out the specific molecular ansatz. We show that the lifetime of a loosely bound heavy-light molecule with enough angular momentum is fully determined by the lifetimes of its constituent mesons.

(Field) Symmetrization Selection Rules

QCD and QED exhibit an infinite set of three-point Green's functions that contain only OZI rule violating contributions, and (for QCD) are subleading in the large N_c expansion. The Green's functions describe the ``decay'' of a J^{PC}={1,3,5 ...}^{-+} exotic hybrid meson current to two J=0 (hybrid) meson currents with identical P and C. We prove that the QCD amplitude for a neutral hybrid {1,3,5 ...}^{-+} exotic current to create eta pi0 only comes from OZI rule violating contributions under certain conditions, and is subleading in N_c.

Multi-GeV Gluonic Mesons

Lattice QCD gives reliable predictions for hybrid charmonium and multi-GeV glueball masses. Proton-antiproton annihilation may offer an excellent opportunity for the first observation of these states. There are two distinct possible programs: The search for J^PC-exotic and non-J^PC-exotic states. The latter program represents substantially higher cross sections and does not absolutely require partial wave analysis, two very attractive features. The program can be performed with a varying pbar energy <10 GeV and a fixed target.

Relativistic Symmetry Suppresses Quark Spin-Orbit Splitting

Experimental data indicate small spin-orbit splittings in hadrons. For heavy-light mesons we identify a relativistic symmetry that suppresses these splittings. We suggest an experimental test in electron-positron annihilation. Furthermore, we argue that the dynamics necessary for this symmetry are possible in QCD.

Pseudovector mesons, hybrids and glueballs

We consider glueball- (hybrid) meson mixing for the low-lying four pseudovector states. The h_1'(1380) decays dominantly to K*K with some presence in rho pi and omega eta. The newly observed h_1(1600) has a D- to S-wave width ratio to omega eta which makes its interpretation as a conventional meson unlikely. We predict the decay pattern of the isopartner conventional or hybrid meson b_1(1650). A notably narrow s sbar partner h_1'(1810) is predicted.

Filter for strangeness in J^{PC} exotic four-quark states

Symmetrization selection rules for the decay of four-quark states to two J=0 mesons are analysed in a non - field theoretic context with isospin symmetry. The OZI allowed decay of an isoscalar J^PC = (1,3,...)^{-+} exotic state to eta' eta or f_0' f_0 is only allowed for four-quark components of the state containing one s sbar pair, providing a filter for strangeness content in these states. Decays of four-quark a_0 states are narrower than otherwise expected. If the experimentally observed 1^{-+} enhancement in eta pi is resonant, it is qualitatively in agreement with being a four-quark state.
