Hybrid Baryon Signatures

We discuss whether a low-lying hybrid baryon should be defined as a three quark - gluon bound state or as three quarks moving on an excited adiabatic potential. We show that the latter definition becomes exact, not only for very heavy quarks, but also for specific dynamics. We review the literature on the signatures of hybrid baryons, with specific reference to strong hadronic decays, electromagnetic couplings, diffractive production and production in psi decay.

Tensor glueball-meson mixing phenomenology

The overpopulated isoscalar tensor states are sifted using Schwinger-type mass relations. Two solutions are found: one where the glueball is the fJ(2220), and one where the glueball is more distributed, with f2(1820) having the largest component. The f2(1565) and fJ(1710) cannot be accommodated as glueball-(hybrid) meson mixtures in the absense of significant coupling to decay channels. f2'(1525) -> pi pi is in agreement with experiment. The fJ(2220) decays neither flavour democratically nor is narrow.

Generalized Schwinger Mass Formula

We generalize Schwinger's original mass formula to the case of an additional isosinglet mixing with the nonet mesons. We then make further generalization to either (i) an arbitrary number of additional isosinglets mixing with nonet mesons, or (ii) an arbitrary number of mesons mixing with an additional isosinglet. In the former case, we present an explicit relation, while in the latter case, we show by numerical example that the new mass formula is only weakly affected by the inclusion of additional mesons, and hence holds with good accuracy for each of the 3x3 mass sub-matrices.

Interpretation of D(2637) from heavy quark symmetry

We demonstate from heavy quark symmetry that the width of D(2637) claimed by the DELPHI Collaboration is inconsistent with any bound state with one charm quark predicted in the D(2637) mass region, except possibly D*_3, D_2 or D'. The former two possibilities are favoured by heavy quark mass relations.

Gluonic Excitations' Millennial Finale

We provide an overview of theoretical developments on hybrid mesons and glueballs in the last year at this turn of the millenium conference. Cracks in potential models of conventional mesons are developing. Hybrid meson adiabatic surfaces have been calculated and interpreted, experimental J^PC exotics have hybrid meson, four-quark state or non-resonant interpretations, and the strong decay mechanism of hybrids has been studied. All theoretical progress on hybrid mesons in the last year is mentioned. Overall features of glueballs are visited: decays and the successes of the large N_c limit. Two promising experimental areas are mentioned: charmonium hybrids at B-factories and s sbar hybrids at Jefferson Lab.

(Hybrid) Baryons: Symmetries and Masses

We construct (hybrid) baryons in the flux-tube model of Isgur and Paton. In the limit of adiabatic quark motion, we build proper eigenstates of orbital angular momentum and construct the flavour, spin and J^P of hybrid baryons from the symmetries of the system. The lowest mass hybrid baryon is estimated at approximately 2 GeV.

(Hybrid) Baryons in the Flux-Tube Model

We construct baryons and hybrid baryons in the non-relativistic flux-tube model of Isgur and Paton. The motion of the flux-tube with the three quark positions fixed, except for centre of mass corrections, is discussed. It is shown that the problem can to an excellent approximation be reduced to the independent motion of a junction and strings.

Constructing Hybrid Baryons with Flux Tubes

Hybrid baryon states are described in quark potential models as having explicit excitation of the gluon degrees of freedom. Such states are described in a model motivated by the strong coupling limit of Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory, where three flux tubes meeting at a junction play the role of the glue. The adiabatic approximation for the quark motion is used, and the flux tubes and junction are modeled by beads which are attracted to each other and the quarks by a linear potential, and vibrate in various string modes. Quantum numbers and estimates of the energies of the lightest hybrid baryons are provided.

(Hybrid) Baryons: Quantum Numbers and Adiabatic Potentials

We construct (hybrid) baryons in the flux-tube model of Isgur and Paton. In the limit of adiabatic quark motion, we build proper eigenstates of orbital angular momentum and indicate the flavour, spin, chirality and J^P of (hybrid) baryons. The adiabatic potential is calculated as a function of the quark positions.

Have Gluonic Excitations Been Found?

New experimental information on the non-exotic J^PC = 0^-+ isovector seen at 1.8 GeV by VES yields convincing evidence of its excited gluonic (hybrid) nature when a critical study of alternative quarkonium assignments is made in the context of ^3 P_0 decay by flux-tube breaking. Production of this gluonic excitation via meson exchange is promising, although its two photon production vanishes.

Scalar Glueball Mixing and Decay

We provide the first explanation of the counter-intuitive scalar glueball couplings to pseudoscalar mesons found in lattice QCD and predict hitherto uncalculated decay modes. Significant a_1 pi and (pi pi)_S (pi pi)_S couplings are found. We demonstrate the equivalence of linear and quadratic mass matrices for glueball-quarkonium mixing. The equivalence of formalisms which deal with a glueball-quarkonium basis and only a quarkonium basis is demonstrated. We show that the f_0(1500) is not the heaviest state arising from glueball-quarkonium mixing for a glueball mass consistent with lattice QCD. The masses and couplings of scalar mesons, as well as their valence content, are calculated.

Interpretation of Experimental J^PC Exotic Signals

We investigate theoretical interpretations of the 1.4 GeV J^PC exotic resonance reported by the E852 collaboration. It is argued that interpretation in terms of a hybrid meson is untenable. A K-matrix analysis shows that the 1.4 GeV enhancement in the E852 eta pi data can be understood as an interference of a non-resonant Deck-type background and a resonance at 1.6 GeV. A final state rescattering calculation shows that the 1.6 GeV hybrid has a eta pi width which is bounded above by 57 \pm 14 MeV.

Gluonic Excitations in Mesons

We report on some interesting recent theoretical and experimental advances on J^PC exotics and hybrid mesons. These are the decay selection rules governing J^PC exotic decay, the experimental evidence for a J^PC = 1^-+ exotic in eta pi and rho pi, and the production of charmonium hybrids at forthcoming B-factories.

Photo-- and Electroproduction of $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotics

We estimate the kinematic dependence of the exclusive photo-- and electroproduction of $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotic mesons due to $π$ exchange. We show that the kinematic dependence is largely independent of the exotic meson form factor, which is explicitly derived for a $1^{-+}$ isovector hybrid meson in the flux-tube model of Isgur and Paton. The relevance to experiments currently planned at Jefferson Lab is indicated.

Strong Decays of Hybrid Mesons from the Heavy Quark Expansion of QCD

We calculate the strong decays of hybrid mesons to conventional mesons for all the lowest lying J^PC hybrids of flavour uu, dd, ss, cc and bb. A decay operator developed from the heavy quark expansion of quantum chromodynamics is employed. We show that the selection rule that hybrid mesons do not decay to identical S-wave mesons, found in other models, is preserved. We predict decays of charmonium hybrids, discuss decays of J^PC=1^-+ exotic isovector hybrids of various masses, and interpret the π(1800) as a hybrid meson.

Implications of a J^PC exotic

Recent experimental data from BNL on the isovector J^PC =1^-+ exotic at 1.6 GeV in ρπindicate the existence of a non-quarkonium state consistent with lattice gauge theory predictions. We discuss how further experiments can strengthen this conclusion. We show that the ρπ, η'πand ηπcouplings of this state qualitatively support the hypothesis that it is a hybrid meson, although other interpretations cannot be eliminated.

Symmetrization Selection Rules

We introduce strong and electromagnetic interaction selection rules for the two-body decay and production of exotic J^{PC} = 0^{+-}, 1^{-+}, 2^{+-}, 3^{-+} hybrid mesons, four-quark states and glueballs. The rules arise from symmetrization in states. Examples include various decays to eta' eta, eta pi, eta' pi and pi^{\pm} pi^0. The symmetrization rules can discriminate between hybrid and four-quark interpretations of a 1^{-+} signal.
