Detecting Hallucinated and Suspicious Citations: What Current Tools Can and Cannot Do

Large language models are increasingly used in academic writing, including for reference generation, raising concerns about hallucinated and unreliable citations. Recent research suggests that this problem is already widespread and is becoming increasingly prevalent in the published literature and at scientific conferences. In this position paper, we review recent studies on hallucinated references and evaluate several currently available tools for detecting problematic references using documents containing hallucinated citations. The tools assessed include CheckIfExist, HalluCiteChecker, Hallucinator, Hallucinated Reference Finder (HalRef), and RefChecker. While these systems can provide useful early warnings in many cases, their performance is limited by reference extraction errors, incomplete metadata, limited database coverage, and inconsistent verification results. We argue that hallucinated and suspicious references have become a real and growing problem for scientific communication, and that more transparent and multi-source detection systems are still needed.

AI Overviews in Academic Search: Evaluating AI-generated Summaries of Search Results in a Domain-specific Search Engine

Evaluating search engine results pages (SERPs) to assess result relevance is a demanding step in academic search. In a formative mixed-methods design study, we examine AI-generated SERP-level summaries as a support feature in an academic search engine for social science information. First, we manually evaluated summaries of the top five results for 10 queries using two general-purpose models, one commercial and one open, deriving an exploratory six-category error taxonomy and five safeguards for scholarly deployment. We then conducted a within-subjects user study (n = 30) comparing interfaces with and without AI summaries. Confirmatory analyses showed consistent but non-significant trends favoring AI summaries for subjective workload, perceived usefulness, satisfaction, and decision-making confidence. Exploratory analyses suggested lower mental demand, with frustration also tending to be lower. Behaviorally, participants rarely expanded the summaries and descriptively made slightly fewer result clicks and query reformulations when summaries were available. Drawing on Information Foraging Theory and participant feedback, we suggest that AI summaries may concentrate SERP-level information scent to support early triage. Overall, the findings indicate that SERP-level AI summaries are a context- and user-dependent aid rather than a universal improvement, while contributing an error taxonomy, safeguard-aware deployment guidance, and concrete design implications for scholarly search.

Co-creation of AI technology, empowering curators of cultural heritage information and guarding research commons

The substance of this paper is the description of the use of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) for specific digital collections of cultural assets. The collections are provided by institutions operating in the cultural sector. The topical areas are the humanities and social sciences. More concretely, most of the work presented here was enabled by a European-funded research project MuseIT which is clearly situated in the realm of fostering new technologies for Cultural Heritage. We adhere to this interaction by presenting a sequence of our experimentations. This sequence is narrated as a specific journey of engineering all executed around a specific data-sharing and archiving platform Dataverse. Implementing a local chatbot for collections - a method also known as RAG in Information Retrieval - is the current culmination of this journey. The engineering journey we describe in the core of the paper starts from "archives for everyone" and ends with "local chatbots for specific collections".

MIRA: An LLM-Assisted Benchmark for Multi-Category Integrated Retrieval

Users increasingly expect modern search systems to offer a unified interface that seamlessly retrieves information from diverse data sources and formats. However, current information retrieval (IR) evaluation benchmarks have not kept pace with this development, primarily due to the lack of test collections that represent the diversity of contemporary search domains. We address this critical gap with MIRA, a novel benchmark based on a large-scale social science search platform. MIRA is designed for category-aware ranking across heterogeneous categories - Publications, Research Data, Variables, and Instruments & Tools - within a single, unified evaluation framework. The proposed collection is distinctive in several ways: (1) it is built upon real user queries, providing a more realistic basis for evaluation; (2) it covers scholarly items from four distinct categories, enabling multi-faceted evaluation; and (3) it leverages a Large Language Model to generate topic descriptions and narratives, as well as for relevance assessment with respect to these topics, substantially reducing the labor and cost of test collection generation. We release this resource to benefit the community by providing a foundational testbed for the research on multi-faceted, category-aware, integrated, or cross-category information retrieval.

Rewrite the News: Tracing Editorial Reuse Across News Agencies

This paper investigates sentence-level text reuse in multilingual journalism, analyzing where reused content occurs within articles. We present a weakly supervised method for detecting sentence-level cross-lingual reuse without requiring full translations, designed to support automated pre-selection to reduce information overload for journalists (Holyst et al., 2024). The study compares English-language articles from the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) with reports from 15 foreign agencies (FA) in seven languages, using publication timestamps to retain the earliest likely foreign source for each reused sentence. We analyze 1,037 STA and 237,551 FA articles from two time windows (October 7-November 2, 2023; February 1-28, 2025) and identify 1,087 aligned sentence pairs after filtering to the earliest sources. Reuse occurs in 52% of STA articles and 1.6% of FA articles and is predominantly non-literal, involving paraphrase and compositional reuse from multiple sources. Reused content tends to appear in the middle and end of English articles, while leads are more often original, indicating that simple lexical matching overlooks substantial editorial reuse. Compared with prior work focused on monolingual overlap, we (i) detect reuse across languages without requiring full translation, (ii) use publication timing to identify likely sources, and (iii) analyze where reused material is situated within articles. Analysing Calls to Order in German Parliamentary Debates

Parliamentary debate constitutes a central arena of political power, shaping legislative outcomes and public discourse. Incivility within this arena signals political polarization and institutional conflict. This study presents a systematic investigation of incivility in the German Bundestag by examining calls to order (CtO; plural: CtOs) as formal indicators of norm violations. Despite their relevance, CtOs have received little systematic attention in parliamentary research. We introduce a rule-based method for detecting and annotating CtOs in parliamentary speeches and present a novel dataset of German parliamentary debates spanning 72 years that includes annotated CtO instances. Additionally, we develop the first classification system for CtO triggers and analyze the factors associated with their occurrence. Our findings show that, despite formal regulations, the issuance of CtOs is partly subjective and influenced by session presidents and parliamentary dynamics, with certain individuals disproportionately affected. An insult towards individuals is the most frequent cause of CtO. In general, male members and those belonging to opposition parties receive more calls to order than their female and coalition-party counterparts. Cultural Analytics for Good: Building Inclusive Evaluation Frameworks for Historical IR

This work bridges the fields of information retrieval and cultural analytics to support equitable access to historical knowledge. Using the British Library BL19 digital collection (more than 35,000 works from 1700-1899), we construct a benchmark for studying changes in language, terminology and retrieval in the 19th-century fiction and non-fiction. Our approach combines expert-driven query design, paragraph-level relevance annotation, and Large Language Model (LLM) assistance to create a scalable evaluation framework grounded in human expertise. We focus on knowledge transfer from fiction to non-fiction, investigating how narrative understanding and semantic richness in fiction can improve retrieval for scholarly and factual materials. This interdisciplinary framework not only improves retrieval accuracy but also fosters interpretability, transparency, and cultural inclusivity in digital archives. Our work provides both practical evaluation resources and a methodological paradigm for developing retrieval systems that support richer, historically aware engagement with digital archives, ultimately working towards more emancipatory knowledge infrastructures.

Investigating the originality of scientific papers across time and domain: A quantitative analysis

The study of creativity in science has long sought quantitative metrics capable of capturing the originality of the scientific insights contained within articles and other scientific works. In recent years, the field has witnessed a substantial expansion of research activity, enabled by advances in natural language processing and network analysis, and has utilised both macro- and micro-scale approaches with success. However, they often do not examine the text itself for evidence of originality. In this paper, we apply a computational measure correlating with originality from creativity science, Divergent Semantic Integration (DSI), to a set of 51,200 scientific abstracts and titles sourced from the Web of Science. To adapt DSI for application to scientific texts, we advance the original BERT method by incorporating SciBERT (a model trained on scientific corpora) into the computation of DSI. In our study, we observe that DSI plays a more pronounced role in the accrual of early citations for papers with fewer authors, varies substantially across subjects and research fields, and exhibits a declining correlation with citation counts over time. Furthermore, by modelling SciBERT- and BERT-DSI as predictors of the logarithm of 5-year citation counts alongside field, publication year, and the logarithm of author count, we find statistically significant relationships, with adjusted R-squared of 0.103 and 0.101 for BERT-DSI and SciBERT-DSI. Because existing scientometric measures rarely assess the originality expressed in textual content, DSI provides a valuable means of directly quantifying the conceptual originality embedded in scientific writing.

Bi-National Academic Funding and Collaboration Dynamics: The Case of the German-Israeli Foundation

Academic grant programs are widely used to motivate international research collaboration and boost scientific impact across borders. Among these, bi-national funding schemes -- pairing researchers from just two designated countries -- are common yet understudied compared with national and multinational funding. In this study, we explore whether bi-national programs are associated with new collaborations and lasting partnerships. To this end, we conducted an observational bibliometric case study of the German--Israeli Foundation (GIF), covering 642 grants, 2,386 researchers, and 52,847 publications. Our results show that GIF funding is associated with increased co-authorship behavior during, and even slightly before, the grant period, but it is rarely linked with long-lasting co-authorship patterns that persist once the funding concludes. By tracing co-authorship before, during, and after the funding period, clustering collaboration trajectories with temporally-aware K-means, and predicting cluster membership with ML models, we find that 45% of teams with no prior co-authored publications become active while funded, yet activity declines rapidly post-award; roughly one-third sustain longer-term co-authorship activity, whereas only a small subset sustains high, lasting co-authorship activity. Moreover, the team's composition and bibliometrics are found to be largely insufficient in predicting co-authorship activity during and after the grant.

PreprintToPaper dataset: connecting bioRxiv preprints with journal publications

The PreprintToPaper dataset connects bioRxiv preprints with their corresponding journal publications, enabling large-scale analysis of the preprint-to-publication process. It comprises metadata for 145,517 preprints from two periods, 2016-2018 (pre-pandemic) and 2020-2022 (pandemic), retrieved via the bioRxiv and Crossref APIs. We selected the two periods to capture preprint-publication dynamics before and during the COVID-19 pandemic while avoiding transitional years. Each record includes bibliographic information such as titles, abstracts, authors, institutions, submission dates, licenses, and subject categories, alongside enriched publication metadata including journal names, publication dates, author lists, and further information. In addition to the main dataset, a version-history subset provides all available versions of preprints within the two selected periods, enabling analysis of how preprints evolve over time. Preprints are categorized into three groups: Published (formally linked to a journal article), Preprint Only (posted on a preprint server), and Gray Zone (potentially published in a journal but unlinked). To enhance reliability, title and author similarity scores were computed, and a human-annotated subset of 299 records was created to evaluate Gray Zone cases. The dataset supports diverse applications, including studies of scholarly communication, open science policies, bibliometric tool development, and natural language processing research on textual changes between preprints and the corresponding journal articles. The dataset is publicly available in CSV format via Zenodo.

NFDI4DS Shared Tasks for Scholarly Document Processing

Shared tasks are powerful tools for advancing research through community-based standardised evaluation. As such, they play a key role in promoting findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), as well as transparent and reproducible research practices. This paper presents an updated overview of twelve shared tasks developed and hosted under the German National Research Data Infrastructure for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (NFDI4DS) consortium, covering a diverse set of challenges in scholarly document processing. Hosted at leading venues, the tasks foster methodological innovations and contribute open-access datasets, models, and tools for the broader research community, which are integrated into the consortium's research data infrastructure.

Open Political Corpora: Structuring, Searching, and Analyzing Political Text Collections with PoliCorp

In this work, we present PoliCorp (https://demo-pollux.gesis.org/), a web portal designed to facilitate the search and analysis of political text corpora. PoliCorp provides researchers with access to rich textual data, enabling in-depth analysis of parliamentary discourse over time. The platform currently features a collection of transcripts from debates in the German parliament, spanning 76 years of proceedings. With the advanced search functionality, researchers can apply logical operations to combine or exclude search criteria, making it easier to filter through vast amounts of parliamentary debate data. The search can be customised by combining multiple fields and applying logical operators to uncover complex patterns and insights within the data. Additional data processing steps were performed to enable web-based search and incorporate extra features. A key feature that differentiates PoliCorp is its intuitive web-based interface that enables users to query processed political texts without requiring programming skills. The user-friendly platform allows for the creation of custom subcorpora via search parameters, which can be freely downloaded in JSON format for further analysis.

Research Knowledge Graphs in NFDI4DataScience: Key Activities, Achievements, and Future Directions

As research in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science continues to grow in volume and complexity, it becomes increasingly difficult to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and discoverability. To address these challenges, as research artifacts should be understandable and usable by machines, the NFDI4DataScience consortium is developing and providing Research Knowledge Graphs (RKGs). Building upon earlier works, this paper presents recent progress in creating semantically rich RKGs using standardized ontologies, shared vocabularies, and automated Information Extraction techniques. Key achievements include the development of the NFDI4DS ontology, metadata standards, tools, and services designed to support the FAIR principles, as well as community-led projects and various implementations of RKGs. Together, these efforts aim to capture and connect the complex relationships between datasets, models, software, and scientific publications.

Chatting with Papers: A Hybrid Approach Using LLMs and Knowledge Graphs

This demo paper reports on a new workflow \textit{GhostWriter} that combines the use of Large Language Models and Knowledge Graphs (semantic artifacts) to support navigation through collections. Situated in the research area of Retrieval Augmented Generation, this specific workflow represents the creation of local and adaptable chatbots. Based on the tool-suite \textit{EverythingData} at the backend, \textit{GhostWriter} provides an interface that enables querying and ``chatting'' with a collection. Applied iteratively, the workflow supports the information needs of researchers when interacting with a collection of papers, whether it be to gain an overview, to learn more about a specific concept and its context, and helps the researcher ultimately to refine their research question in a controlled way. We demonstrate the workflow for a collection of articles from the \textit{method data analysis} journal published by GESIS -- Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences. We also point to further application areas.

Annotating Scientific Uncertainty: A comprehensive model using linguistic patterns and comparison with existing approaches

UnScientify, a system designed to detect scientific uncertainty in scholarly full text. The system utilizes a weakly supervised technique to identify verbally expressed uncertainty in scientific texts and their authorial references. The core methodology of UnScientify is based on a multi-faceted pipeline that integrates span pattern matching, complex sentence analysis and author reference checking. This approach streamlines the labeling and annotation processes essential for identifying scientific uncertainty, covering a variety of uncertainty expression types to support diverse applications including information retrieval, text mining and scientific document processing. The evaluation results highlight the trade-offs between modern large language models (LLMs) and the UnScientify system. UnScientify, which employs more traditional techniques, achieved superior performance in the scientific uncertainty detection task, attaining an accuracy score of 0.808. This finding underscores the continued relevance and efficiency of UnScientify's simple rule-based and pattern matching strategy for this specific application. The results demonstrate that in scenarios where resource efficiency, interpretability, and domain-specific adaptability are critical, traditional methods can still offer significant advantages.

Unveiling tortured phrases in Humanities and Social Sciences

A small amount of unscrupulous people, concerned by their career prospects, resort to paper mill services to publish articles in renowned journals and conference proceedings. These include patchworks of synonymized contents using paraphrasing tools, featuring tortured phrases, increasingly polluting the scientific literature. The Problematic Paper Screener (PPS) has been developed to allow articles (re)assessment on PubPeer. Since most of the known tortured phrases are found in publications in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), we extend this work by exploring their presence in the humanities and social sciences (HSS). To do so, we used the PPS to look for tortured abbreviations, generated from the two social science thesauri ELSST and THESOZ. We also used two case studies to find new tortured abbreviations, by screening the Hindawi EDRI journal and the GESIS SSOAR repository. We found a total of 32 multidisciplinary problematic documents, related to Education, Psychology, and Economics. We also generated 121 new fingerprints to be added to the PPS. These articles and future screening have to be investigated by social scientists, as most of it is currently done by STEM domain experts.

Originality in scientific titles and abstracts can predict citation count

In this research-in-progress paper, we apply a computational measure correlating with originality from creativity science: Divergent Semantic Integration (DSI), to a selection of 99,557 scientific abstracts and titles selected from the Web of Science. We observe statistically significant differences in DSI between subject and field of research, and a slight rise in DSI over time. We model the base 10 logarithm of the citation count after 5 years with DSI and find a statistically significant positive correlation in all fields of research with an adjusted $R^2$ of 0.13.

Utilizing Large Language Models for Named Entity Recognition in Traditional Chinese Medicine against COVID-19 Literature: Comparative Study

Objective: To explore and compare the performance of ChatGPT and other state-of-the-art LLMs on domain-specific NER tasks covering different entity types and domains in TCM against COVID-19 literature. Methods: We established a dataset of 389 articles on TCM against COVID-19, and manually annotated 48 of them with 6 types of entities belonging to 3 domains as the ground truth, against which the NER performance of LLMs can be assessed. We then performed NER tasks for the 6 entity types using ChatGPT (GPT-3.5 and GPT-4) and 4 state-of-the-art BERT-based question-answering (QA) models (RoBERTa, MiniLM, PubMedBERT and SciBERT) without prior training on the specific task. A domain fine-tuned model (GSAP-NER) was also applied for a comprehensive comparison. Results: The overall performance of LLMs varied significantly in exact match and fuzzy match. In the fuzzy match, ChatGPT surpassed BERT-based QA models in 5 out of 6 tasks, while in exact match, BERT-based QA models outperformed ChatGPT in 5 out of 6 tasks but with a smaller F-1 difference. GPT-4 showed a significant advantage over other models in fuzzy match, especially on the entity type of TCM formula and the Chinese patent drug (TFD) and ingredient (IG). Although GPT-4 outperformed BERT-based models on entity type of herb, target, and research method, none of the F-1 scores exceeded 0.5. GSAP-NER, outperformed GPT-4 in terms of F-1 by a slight margin on RM. ChatGPT achieved considerably higher recalls than precisions, particularly in the fuzzy match. Conclusions: The NER performance of LLMs is highly dependent on the entity type, and their performance varies across application scenarios. ChatGPT could be a good choice for scenarios where high recall is favored. However, for knowledge acquisition in rigorous scenarios, neither ChatGPT nor BERT-based QA models are off-the-shelf tools for professional practitioners.
