Localized emission in MoSe$_2$ monolayers on GaN nanopillars

Solid-state quantum emitters (QEs) in two-dimensional semiconductors offer compact, chip-compatible sources for quantum photonics. In transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), nanopillars are widely used to induce localized emission, yet the underlying confinement mechanism and the relative roles of strain versus dielectric environment remain unclear. The general problem addressed here is whether strain alone explains quantum emitter formation and placement in MoSe$_2$, or whether dielectric contrast at suspended-supported interfaces is also required. Here, we combine hyperspectral superlocalization of photoluminescence with co-registered AFM topography and phase to map the positions of localized states (LS) in MoSe$_2$ suspended on GaN pillars and correlate them with bending strain and the local dielectric context. Contrary to the common assumption of purely strain-driven activation, LS frequently occur at suspended--supported interfaces around the pillar apex and span a broad strain range without a clear threshold, while being scarce along high-strain ripples. Our data indicate that deterministic emitter positioning in Mo-based TMDs benefits from co-engineering both strain gradients and nanoscale dielectric heterogeneity, rather than strain alone. More broadly, this combined optical-mechanical characterization approach provides a general framework for mapping structure-property relationships in 2D quantum materials at the single-emitter level.

Post-2000 Nonlinear Optical Materials and Measurements: Data Tables and Best Practices

In its 60 years of existence, the field of nonlinear optics has gained momentum especially over the past two decades thanks to major breakthroughs in material science and technology. In this article, we present a new set of data tables listing nonlinear-optical properties for different material categories as reported in the literature since 2000. The papers included in the data tables are representative experimental works on bulk materials, solvents, 0D-1D-2D materials, metamaterials, fiber waveguiding materials, on-chip waveguiding materials, hybrid waveguiding systems, and materials suitable for nonlinear optics at THz frequencies. In addition to the data tables, we also provide best practices for performing and reporting nonlinear-optical experiments. These best practices underpin the selection process that was used for including papers in the tables. While the tables indeed show strong advancements in the field over the past two decades, we encourage the nonlinear-optics community to implement the identified best practices in future works. This will allow a more adequate comparison, interpretation and use of the published parameters, and as such further stimulate the overall progress in nonlinear-optical science and applications.

Reduced lasing thresholds in GeSn microdisk cavities with defect management of the optically active region

GeSn alloys are nowadays considered as the most promising materials to build Group IV laser sources on silicon (Si) in a full complementary metal oxide semiconductor-compatible approach. Recent GeSn laser developments rely on increasing the band structure directness, by increasing the Sn content in thick GeSn layers grown on germanium (Ge) virtual substrates (VS) on Si. These lasers nonetheless suffer from a lack of defect management and from high threshold densities. In this work we examine the lasing characteristics of GeSn alloys with Sn contents ranging from 7 \% to 10.5 \%. The GeSn layers were patterned into suspended microdisk cavities with different diameters in the 4-\SI{8 }{\micro\meter} range. We evidence direct band gap in GeSn with 7 \% of Sn and lasing at 2-\SI{2.3 }{\micro\meter} wavelength under optical injection with reproducible lasing thresholds around \SI{10 }{\kilo\watt\per\square\centi\meter}, lower by one order of magnitude as compared to the literature. These results were obtained after the removal of the dense array of misfit dislocations in the active region of the GeSn microdisk cavities. The results offer new perspectives for future designs of GeSn-based laser sources.

Analysis of low-threshold optically pumped III-nitride microdisk lasers

Low-threshold lasing under pulsed optical pumping is demonstrated at room temperature for III-nitride microdisks with InGaN/GaN quantum wells on Si in the blue spectral range. Thresholds in the range of 18 kW/cm2 have been achieved along with narrow linewidths of 0.07 nm and a large peak to background dynamic of 300. We compare this threshold range with the one that can be calculated using a rate equation model. We show that thresholds in the few kW/cm2 range constitute the best that can be achieved with III-nitride quantum wells at room temperature. The sensitivity of lasing on the fabrication process is also discussed.

Monolithic integration of ultraviolet microdisk lasers into photonic circuits in a III-nitride-on-silicon platform

Ultraviolet microdisk lasers are integrated monolithically into photonic circuits using a III-nitride on silicon platform with gallium nitride (GaN) as the main waveguiding layer. The photonic circuits consist of a microdisk and a pulley waveguide terminated by out-coupling gratings. We measure quality factors up to 3500 under continuous-wave excitation. Lasing is observed from 374 nm to 399 nm under pulsed excitation, achieving low threshold energies of $0.14 ~\text{mJ/cm}^2$ per pulse (threshold peak powers of $35 ~\text{kW/cm}^2$). A large peak to background dynamic of around 200 is observed at the out-coupling grating for small gaps of 50 nm between the disk and waveguide. These devices operate at the limit of what can be achieved with GaN in terms of operation wavelength.

Demonstration of critical coupling in an active III-nitride microdisk photonic circuit on silicon

On-chip microlaser sources in the blue constitute an important building block for complex integrated photonic circuits on silicon. We have developed photonic circuits operating in the blue spectral range based on microdisks and bus waveguides in III-nitride on silicon. We report on the interplay between microdisk-waveguide coupling and its optical properties. We observe critical coupling and phase matching, i.e. the most efficient energy transfer scheme, for very short gap sizes and thin waveguides (g = 45 nm and w = 170 nm) in the spontaneous emission regime. Whispering gallery mode lasing is demonstrated for a wide range of parameters with a strong dependence of the threshold on the loaded quality factor. We show the dependence and high sensitivity of the output signal on the coupling. Lastly, we observe the impact of processing on the tuning of mode resonances due to the very short coupling distances. Such small footprint on-chip integrated microlasers providing maximum energy transfer into a photonic circuit have important potential applications for visible-light communication and lab-on-chip bio-sensors.

Blue Microlasers Integrated on a Photonic Platform on Silicon

The main interest of group-III-nitride nanophotonic circuits is the integration of active structures and laser sources. A photonic platform of group-III-nitride microdisk lasers integrated on silicon and emitting in the blue spectral range is demonstrated. The active microdisks are side-coupled to suspended bus waveguides, and the coupled emission is guided and outcoupled to free space using grating couplers. A small gap size of less than 100 nm between the disk and the waveguide is required in the blue spectral range for optimal evanescent coupling. To avoid reabsorption of the microdisk emission in the waveguide, the quantum wells are etched away from the waveguide. Under continuous-wave excitation, loaded quality factors greater than 2000 are observed for the whispering gallery modes for devices with small gaps and large waveguide bending angles. Under pulsed excitation conditions, lasing is evidenced for 3 $μ$m diameter microdisks integrated in a full photonic circuit. We thus present a first demonstration of a III-nitride microlaser coupled to a nanophotonic circuit.

Q factor limitation at short wavelength (around 300 nm) in III-nitride-on-silicon photonic crystal cavities

III-nitride-on-silicon L3 photonic crystal cavities with resonances down to 315 nm and quality factors (Q) up to 1085 at 337 nm have been demonstrated. The reduction of the quality factor with decreasing wavelength is investigated. Besides the quantum well absorption below 340 nm, a noteworthy contribution is attributed to the residual absorption present in thin AlN layers grown on silicon, as measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry. This residual absorption ultimately limits the Q factor to around 2000 at 300 nm when no active layer is present.

III-nitride on silicon electrically injected microrings for nanophotonic circuits

Nanophotonic circuits using group III-nitrides on silicon are still lacking one key component: efficient electrical injection. In this paper we demonstrate an electrical injection scheme using a metal microbridge contact in thin III-nitride on silicon mushroom-type microrings that is compatible with integrated nanophotonic circuits with the goal of achieving electrically injected lasing. Using a central buried n-contact to bypass the insulating buffer layers, we are able to underetch the microring, which is essential for maintaining vertical confinement in a thin disk. We demonstrate direct current room-temperature electroluminescence with 440 mW/cm$^2$ output power density at 20 mA from such microrings with diameters of 30 to 50 $μ$m. The first steps towards achieving an integrated photonic circuit are demonstrated.

Instanton dominance over $α_s$ at low momenta from lattice QCD simulations at $N_f=0$, $N_f=2+1$ and $N_f=2+1+1$

We report on an instanton-based analysis of the gluon Green functions in the Landau gauge for low momenta; in particular we use lattice results for $α_s$ in the symmetric momentum subtraction scheme (${\rm MOM}$) for large-volume lattice simulations. We have exploited quenched gauge field configurations, $N_f=0$, with both Wilson and tree-level Symanzik improved actions, and unquenched ones with $N_f=2+1$ and $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical flavors (domain wall and twisted-mass fermions, respectively). We show that the dominance of instanton correlations on the low-momenta gluon Green functions can be applied to the determination of phenomenological parameters of the instanton liquid and, eventually, to a determination of the lattice spacing. We furthermore apply the Gradient Flow to remove short-distance fluctuations. The Gradient Flow gets rid of the QCD scale, $Λ_{\rm QCD}$, and reveals that the instanton prediction extents to large momenta. For those gauge field configurations free of quantum fluctuations, the direct study of topological charge density shows the appearance of large-scale lumps that can be identified as instantons, giving access to a direct study of the instanton density and size distribution that is compatible with those extracted from the analysis of the Green functions.

High-performance and power-efficient 2${\times}$2 optical switch on Silicon-on-Insulator

A compact (15μm${\times}$μm) and highly-optimized 2${\times}$2 optical switch is demonstrated on a CMOS-compatible photonic crystal technology. On-chip insertion loss are below 1dB, static and dynamic contrast are 40dB and >20dB respectively. Owing to efficient thermo-optic design, the power consumption is below 3 mW while the switching time is 1 μs.

Testing OPE for ghosts, gluons and $α_s$

We present here our results on extracting Wilson coefficients from different quantities such as ghost and gluon propagators which are calculated by means of Lattice QCD. The results confirm the validity of our method for the calculation of the strong coupling constant as well as allow to estimate the range of momenta where OPE is applicable.

High quality factor nitride-based optical cavities: microdisks with embedded GaN/Al(Ga)N quantum dots

We compare the quality factor values of the whispery gallery modes of microdisks incorporating GaN quantum dots (QDs) grown on AlN and AlGaN barriers by performing room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL measurements show a large number of high Q factor (Q) resonant modes on the whole spectrum which allows us to identify the different radial mode families and to compare them with simulations. We report a considerable improvement of the Q factor which reflect the etching quality and the relatively low cavity loss by inserting QDs into the cavity. GaN/AlN QDs based microdisks show very high Q values (Q > 7000) whereas the Q factor is only up to 2000 in microdisks embedding QDs grown on AlGaN barrier layer. We attribute this difference to the lower absorption below bandgap for AlN barrier layers at the energies of our experimental investigation.

Kaon and D meson masses with N_f = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We discuss the computation of the kaon and D meson masses in the N_f = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD setup, where explicit heavy flavor and parity breaking occurs at finite lattice spacing. We present three methods suitable in this context and verify their consistency.

Computing K and D meson masses with N_f = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We discuss the computation of the mass of the K and D mesons within the framework of N_f = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD from a technical point of view. These quantities are essential, already at the level of generating gauge configurations, being obvious candidates to tune the strange and charm quark masses to their physical values. In particular, we address the problems related to the twisted mass flavor and parity symmetry breaking, which arise when considering a non-degenerate (c,s) doublet. We propose and verify the consistency of three methods to extract the K and D meson masses in this framework.

Light hadrons from lattice QCD with light (u,d), strange and charm dynamical quarks

We present results of lattice QCD simulations with mass-degenerate up and down and mass-split strange and charm (N_f = 2+1+1) dynamical quarks using Wilson twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. The tuning of the strange and charm quark masses is performed at two values of the lattice spacing a~0.078 fm and a~0.086 fm with lattice sizes ranging from L~1.9 fm to L~2.8 fm. We measure with high statistical precision the light pseudoscalar mass m_PS and decay constant f_PS in a range 270 < m_PS < 510 MeV and determine the low energy parameters f_0, l_3 and l_4 of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory. We use the two values of the lattice spacing, several lattice sizes as well as different values of the light, strange and charm quark masses to explore the systematic effects. A first study of discretisation effects in light-quark observables and a comparison to N_f=2 results are performed.

Status of ETMC simulations with Nf=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions

We present the status of runs performed in the twisted mass formalism with $N_{\rm f}=2+1+1$ flavours of dynamical fermions: a degenerate light doublet and a mass split heavy doublet. The procedure for tuning to maximal twist will be described as well as the current status of the runs using both thin and stout links. Preliminary results for a few observables obtained on ensembles at maximal twist will be given. Finally, a reweighting procedure to tune to maximal twist will be described.

The S, U and Δρparameters in the Zaragoza proposal for lattice chiral gauge fermions

Using the Zaragoza proposal for lattice chiral gauge fermions, the S, U and Δρparameters have been calculated at one loop. It is shown that the continuum values for these quantities can be reproduced without requiring explicit fine tuning of counterterms. Furthermore, fermion fields doubling is not necessary. To the best of our knowledge, the Zaragoza proposal is the only scheme which has these properties. A necessary (although not sufficient) symmetry is found to support the calculations. Previous results for some of these parameters in other lattice chiral regularizations are revisited in the light of this symmetry.
