Global existence and uniform boundedness in a chemotaxis model with signal-dependent motility

Global existence is established for classical solutions to a chemotaxis model with signal-dependent motility for a general class of motility functions $γ$ which may in particular decay in an arbitrary way at infinity. Assuming further that $γ$ is non-increasing and decays sufficiently slowly at infinity, in the sense that $γ(s)\sim s^{-k}$ as $s\to\infty$ for some $k\in (0,N/(N-2)_+)$, it is also shown that global solutions are uniformly bounded with respect to time. The admissible decay of $γ$ at infinity here is higher than in previous works.

Bounded weak solutions to the thin film Muskat problem via an infinite family of Liapunov functionals

A countably infinite family of Liapunov functionals is constructed for the thin film Muskat problem, which is a second-order degenerate parabolic system featuring cross-diffusion. More precisely, for each n $\ge$ 2 we construct an homogeneous polynomial of degree n, which is convex on [0, $\infty$)^2 , with the property that its integral is a Liapunov functional for the problem. Existence of global bounded non-negative weak solutions is then shown in one space dimension.

The porous medium equation as a singular limit of the thin film Muskat problem

The singular limit of the thin film Muskat problem is performed when the density (and possibly the viscosity) of the lighter fluid vanishes and the porous medium equation is identified as the limit problem. In particular, the height of the denser fluid is shown to converge towards the solution to the porous medium equation and an explicit rate for this convergence is provided in space dimension d $\le$ 4. Moreover, the limit of the height of the lighter fluid is determined in a certain regime and is given by the corresponding initial condition.

Global existence, uniform boundedness, and stabilization in a chemotaxis system with density-suppressed motility and nutrient consumption

Well-posedness and uniform-in-time boundedness of classical solutions are investigated for a three-component parabolic system which describes the dynamics of a population of cells interacting with a chemoattractant and a nutrient. The former induces a chemotactic bias in the diffusive motion of the cells and is accounted for by a density-suppressed motility. Well-posedness is first established for generic positive and non-increasing motility functions vanishing at infinity. Growth conditions on the motility function guaranteeing the uniform-in-time boundedness of solutions are next identified. Finally, for sublinearly decaying motility functions, convergence to a spatially homogeneous steady state is shown, with an exponential rate for consumption rates behaving linearly near zero.

The fragmentation equation with size diffusion: Small and large size behavior of stationary solutions

The small and large size behavior of stationary solutions to the fragmentation equation with size diffusion is investigated. It is shown that these solutions behave like stretched exponentials for large sizes, the exponent in the exponential being solely given by the behavior of the overall fragmentation rate at infinity. In contrast, the small size behavior is partially governed by the daughter fragmentation distribution and is at most linear, with possibly non-algebraic behavior. Explicit solutions are also provided for particular fragmentation coefficients.

The fragmentation equation with size diffusion: Well-posedness and long-term behavior

The dynamics of the fragmentation equation with size diffusion is investigated when the size ranges in (0, $\infty$). The associated linear operator involves three terms and can be seen as a nonlocal perturbation of a Schr{ö}dinger operator. A Miyadera perturbation argument is used to prove that it is the generator of a positive, analytic semigroup on a weighted $L_1$-space. Moreover, if the overall fragmentation rate does not vanish at infinity, then there is a unique stationary solution with given mass. Assuming further that the overall fragmentation rate diverges to infinity for large sizes implies the immediate compactness of the semigroup and that it eventually stabilizes at an exponential rate to a one-dimensional projection carrying the information of the mass of the initial value.

H^2-regularity for a two-dimensional transmission problem with geometric constraint

The H^2-regularity of variational solutions to a two-dimensional transmission problem with geometric constraint is investigated, in particular when part of the interface becomes part of the outer boundary of the domain due to the saturation of the geometric constraint. In such a situation, the domain includes some non-Lipschitz subdomains with cusp points, but it is shown that this feature does not lead to a regularity breakdown. Moreover, continuous dependence of the solutions with respect to the domain is established.

Sharp Sobolev estimates for concentration of solutions to an aggregation-diffusion equation

We consider the drift-diffusion equation $u_t-εΔu + \nabla \cdot(u\nabla K^*u)=0$ in the whole space with global-in-time solutions bounded in all Sobolev spaces; for simplicity, we restrict ourselves to the model case $K(x)=-|x|$. We quantify the mass concentration phenomenon, a genuinely nonlinear effect, for radially symmetric solutions of this equation for small diffusivity $ε$ studied in our previous paper [3], obtaining optimal sharp upper and lower bounds for Sobolev norms.

Mass threshold for infinite-time blowup in a chemotaxis model with splitted population

We study the chemotaxis model $\partial$ t u = div($\nabla$u -- u$\nabla$w) + $θ$v -- u in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, $\partial$ t v = u -- $θ$v in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, $\partial$ t w = D$Δ$w -- $α$w + v in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, with no-flux boundary conditions in a bounded and smooth domain $Ω$ $\subset$ R 2 , where u and v represent the densities of subpopulations of moving and static individuals of some species, respectively, and w the concentration of a chemoattractant. We prove that, in an appropriate functional setting, all solutions exist globally in time. Moreover, we establish the existence of a critical mass M c > 0 of the whole population u + v such that, for M $\in$ (0, M c), any solution is bounded, while, for almost all M > M c , there exist solutions blowing up in infinite time. The building block of the analysis is the construction of a Liapunov functional. As far as we know, this is the first result of this kind when the mass conservation includes the two subpopulations and not only the moving one.

Stationary solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with source

Existence and non-existence of integrable stationary solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with source are investigated when the source term is integrable with an arbitrary support in (0, $\infty$). Besides algebraic upper and lower bounds, a monotonicity condition is required for the coagulation kernel. Connections between integrability properties of the source and the corresponding stationary solutions are also studied.

Delayed Blow-Up for Chemotaxis Models with Local Sensing

The aim of this paper is to analyze a model for chemotaxis based on a local sensing mechanism instead of the gradient sensing mechanism used in the celebrated minimal Keller-Segel model. The model we study has the same entropy as the minimal Keller-Segel model, but a different dynamics to minimize this entropy. Consequently, the conditions on the mass for the existence of stationary solutions or blow-up are the same, however we make the interesting observation that with the local sensing mechanism the blow-up in the case of supercritical mass is delayed to infinite time. Our observation is made rigorous from a mathematical point via a proof of global existence of weak solutions for arbitrary large masses and space dimension. The key difference of our model to the minimal Keller-Segel model is that the structure of the equation allows for a duality estimate that implies a bound on the $(H^1)'$-norm of the solutions, which can only grow with a square-root law in time. This additional $(H^1)'$-bound implies a lower bound on the entropy, which contrasts markedly with the minimal Keller-Segel model for which it is unbounded from below in the supercritical case. Besides, regularity and uniqueness of solutions are also studied.

Shape derivative of the Dirichlet energy for a transmission problem

For a transmission problem in a truncated two-dimensional cylinder located beneath the graph of a function u, the shape derivative of the Dirichlet energy (with respect to u) is shown to be well-defined and is computed. The main difficulties in this context arise from the weak regularity of the domain and the possible non-empty intersection of the graph of u and the transmission interface. The result is applied to establish the existence of a solution to a free boundary transmission problem for an electrostatic actuator.

Energy minimizers for an asymptotic MEMS model with heterogeneous dielectric properties

A model for a MEMS device, consisting of a fixed bottom plate and an elastic plate, is studied. It was derived in a previous work as a reinforced limit when the thickness of the insulating layer covering the bottom plate tends to zero. This asymptotic model inherits the dielectric properties of the insulating layer. It involves the electrostatic potential in the device and the deformation of the elastic plate defining the geometry of the device. The electrostatic potential is given by an elliptic equation with mixed boundary conditions in the possibly non-Lipschitz region between the two plates. The deformation of the elastic plate is supposed to be a critical point of an energy functional which, in turn, depends on the electrostatic potential due to the force exerted by the latter on the elastic plate. The energy functional is shown to have a minimizer giving the geometry of the device. Moreover, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation is computed and the maximal regularity of the electrostatic potential is established.

Stationary solutions to a nonlocal fourth-order elliptic obstacle problem

Existence of stationary solutions to a nonlocal fourth-order elliptic obstacle problem arising from the modelling of microelectromechanical systems with heterogeneous dielectric properties is shown. The underlying variational structure of the model is exploited to construct these solutions as minimizers of a suitably regularized energy, which allows us to weaken considerably the assumptions on the model used in a previous article.

Concentration phenomena in a diffusive aggregation model

We consider the drift-diffusion equation $$ u_t-\varepsilon Δu+\nabla\cdot(u\nabla K\star u)=0 $$ in the whole space with global-in-time bounded solutions. Mass concentration phenomena for radially symmetric solutions of this equation with small diffusivity are studied.

Stationary solutions to coagulation-fragmentation equations

Existence of stationary solutions to the coagulation-fragmentation equation is shown when the coagulation kernel $K$ and the overall fragmentation rate $a$ are given by $K(x, y) = x^αy^β+ x^βy^α$ and $a(x) = x^γ$, respectively, with $0\le α\le β\le1$, $α+β\in [0, 1)$, and $γ> 0$. The proof requires two steps: a dynamical approach is first used to construct stationary solutions under the additional assumption that the coagulation kernel and the overall fragmentation rate are bounded from below by a positive constant. The general case is then handled by a compactness argument.

Mass-conserving self-similar solutions to coagulation-fragmentation equations

Existence of mass-conserving self-similar solutions with a sufficiently small total mass is proved for a specific class of homogeneous coagulation and fragmentation coefficients. The proof combines a dynamical approach to construct such solutions for a regularised coagulation-fragmentation equation in scaling variables and a compactness method.
