Global bounded and unbounded solutions to a chemotaxis system with indirect signal production

The well-posedness of a chemotaxis system with indirect signal production in a two-dimensional domain is shown, all solutions being global unlike the classical Keller-Segel chemotaxis system. Nevertheless, there is a threshold value $M_c$ of the mass of the first component which separates two different behaviours: solutions are bounded when the mass is below $M_c$ while there are unbounded solutions starting from initial conditions having a mass exceeding $M_c$. This result extends to arbitrary two-dimensional domains a previous result of Tao \& Winkler (2017) obtained for radially symmetric solutions to a simplified version of the model in a ball and relies on a different approach involving a Liapunov functional.

Touchdown is the only finite time singularity in a three-dimensional MEMS model

Touchdown is shown to be the only possible finite time singularity that may take place in a free boundary problem modeling a three-dimensional microelectromechanical system. The proof relies on the energy structure of the problem and uses smoothing effects of the semigroup generated in $L^1$ by the bi-Laplacian with clamped boundary conditions.

Mass-conserving solutions to coagulation-fragmentation equations with non-integrable fragment distribution function

Existence of mass-conserving weak solutions to the coagulation-fragmentation equation is established when the fragmentation mechanism produces an infinite number of fragments after splitting. The coagulation kernel is assumed to increase at most linearly for large sizes and no assumption is made on the growth of the overall fragmentation rate for large sizes. However, they are both required to vanish for small sizes at a rate which is prescribed by the (non-integrable) singularity of the fragment distribution.

Mass-conserving solutions to the Smoluchowski coagulation equation with singular kernel

Global weak solutions to the continuous Smoluchowski coagulation equation (SCE) are constructed for coagulation kernels featuring an algebraic singularity for small volumes and growing linearly for large volumes, thereby extending previous results obtained in Norris (1999) and Cueto Camejo \& Warnecke (2015). In particular, linear growth at infinity of the coagulation kernel is included and the initial condition may have an infinite second moment. Furthermore, all weak solutions (in a suitable sense) including the ones constructed herein are shown to be mass-conserving, a property which was proved in Norris (1999) under stronger assumptions. The existence proof relies on a weak compactness method in $L^1$ and a by-product of the analysis is that both conservative and non-conservative approximations to the SCE lead to weak solutions which are then mass-conserving.

Large time behavior of a two phase extension of the porous medium equation

We study the large time behavior of the solutions to a two phase extension of the porous medium equation, which models the so-called seawater intrusion problem. The goal is to identify the self-similar solutions that correspond to steady states of a rescaled version of the problem. We fully characterize the unique steady states that are identified as minimizers of a convex energy and shown to be radially symmetric. Moreover, we prove the convergence of the solution to the time-dependent model towards the unique stationary state as time goes to infinity. We finally provide numerical illustrations of the stationary states and we exhibit numerical convergence rates.

Weak compactness techniques and coagulation equations

Smoluchowski's coagulation equation is a mean-field model describing the growth of clusters by successive mergers. Since its derivation in 1916 it has been studied by several authors, using deterministic and stochastic approaches, with a blossoming of results in the last twenty years. In particular, the use of weak $L^1$-compactness techniques led to a mature theory of weak solutions and the purpose of these notes is to describe the results obtained so far in that direction, as well as the mathematical tools used.

Extinction for a singular diffusion equation with strong gradient absorption revisited

When $2N/(N+1)<p<2$ and $0<q<p/2$, non-negative solutions to the singular diffusion equation with gradient absorption $$\partial\_tu-Δ\_p u + |\nabla u|^q=0 \ \text{ in }\ (0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N$$ vanish after a finite time. This phenomenon is usually referred to as finite time extinction and takes place provided the initial condition $u\_0$ decays sufficiently rapidly as $|x|\to\infty$. On the one hand, the optimal decay of $u\_0$ at infinity guaranteeing the occurence of finite time extinction is identified. On the other hand, assuming further that $p-1<q<p/2$, optimal extinction rates near the extinction time are derived.

Finite time singularity in a MEMS model revisited

A free boundary problem modeling a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) consisting of a fixed ground plate and a deformable top plate is considered, the plates being held at different electrostatic potentials. It couples a second order semilinear parabolic equation for the deformation of the top plate to a Laplace equation for the electrostatic potential in the device. The validity of the model is expected to break down in finite time when the applied voltage exceeds a certain value, a finite time singularity occurring then. This result, already known for non-positive initial configurations of the top plate, is here proved for arbitrary ones and thus now includes, in particular, snap-through instabilities.

Oscillatory dynamics in Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with diagonal kernel

We characterize the long-time behaviour of solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with a diagonal kernel of homogeneity $γ< 1$. Due to the property of the diagonal kernel, the value of a solution depends only on a discrete set of points. As a consequence, the long-time behaviour of solutions is in general periodic, oscillating between different rescaled versions of a self-similar solution. Immediate consequences of our result are a characterization of the set of data for which the solution converges to self-similar form and a uniqueness result for self-similar profiles.

Self-similar extinction for a diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation with critical absorption

The behavior near the extinction time is identified for non-negative solutions to the diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation with critical gradient absorption $\partial_t u - Δ_p u + |\nabla u|^{p-1} = 0$ in $(0, \infty) \times \mathbb{R}^N$, and fast diffusion $2N/(N + 1) < p < 2$. Given a non-negative and radially symmetric initial condition with a non-increasing profile which decays sufficiently fast as $|x| \to \infty$, it is shown that the corresponding solution $u$ to the above equation approaches a uniquely determined separate variable solution of the form $U(t, x) = (T_e - t)^{1/(2-p)} f_* (|x|), (t, x) \in (0, T_e) \times \mathbb{R}^N$, as $t \to T_e$, where $T_e$ denotes the finite extinction time of $u$. A cornerstone of the convergence proof is an underlying variational structure of the equation. Also, the selected profile $f_*$ is the unique non-negative solution to a second order ordinary differential equation which decays exponentially at infinity. A complete classification of solutions to this equation is provided, thereby describing all separate variable solutions of the original equation. One important difficulty in the uniqueness proof is that no monotonicity argument seems to be available and it is overcome by the construction of an appropriate Pohozaev functional.

Classification of extinction profiles for a one-dimensional diffusive hamilton-jacobi equation with critical absorption

A classification of the behavior of the solutions $f(\cdot,a)$ to the ordinary differential equation $(|f'|^{p-2} f')' + f - |f'|^{p-1} = 0$ in $(0,\infty)$ with initial condition $f(0,a)=a$ and $f'(0,a)=0$ is provided, according to the value of the parameter $a>0$, the exponent $p$ ranging in $(1,2)$. There is a threshold value $a_*$ which separates different behaviors of $f(\cdot,a)$: if $a>a_*$ then $f(\cdot,a)$ vanishes at least once in $(0,\infty)$ and takes negative values while $f(\cdot,a)$ is positive in $(0,\infty)$ and decays algebraically to zero as $r\to\infty$ if $a\in (0,a_*)$. At the threshold value, $f(\cdot,a_*)$ is also positive in $(0,\infty)$ but decays exponentially fast to zero as $r\to\infty$. The proof of these results relies on a transformation to a first-order ordinary differential equation and a monotonicity property with respect to $a>0$. This classification is one step in the description of the dynamics near the extinction time of a diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation with critical gradient absorption and fast diffusion.

Vanishing aspect ratio limit for a fourth-order mems model

So far most studies on mathematical models for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are focused on the so-called small aspect ratio model which is a wave or beam equation with a singular source term. It is formally derived by setting the aspect ratio equal to zero in a more complex model involving a moving boundary. A rigorous justification of this derivation is provided here when bending is taken into account.

Instantaneous shrinking and single point extinction for viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with fast diffusion

For a large class of non-negative initial data, the solutions to the quasilinear viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation $\partial\_t u-Δ\_p u+|\nabla u|^q=0$ in $(0,\infty)\times\real^N$ are known to vanish identically after a finite time when $2N/(N+1) \textless{} p \leq 2$ and $q\in(0,p-1)$. Further properties of this extinction phenomenon are established herein: \emph{instantaneous shrinking} of the support is shown to take place if the initial condition $u\_0$ decays sufficiently rapidly as $|x|\to\infty$, that is, for each $t \textgreater{} 0$, the positivity set of $u(t)$ is a bounded subset of $\real^N$ even if $u\_0 \textgreater{} 0$ in $\real^N$. This decay condition on $u\_0$ is also shown to be optimal by proving that the positivity set of any solution emanating from a positive initial condition decaying at a slower rate as $|x|\to\infty$ is the whole $\real^N$ for all times. The time evolution of the positivity set is also studied: on the one hand, it is included in a fixed ball for all times if it is initially bounded (\emph{localization}). On the other hand, it converges to a single point at the extinction time for a class of radially symmetric initial data, a phenomenon referred to as \emph{single point extinction}. This behavior is in sharp contrast with what happens when $q$ ranges in $[p-1,p/2)$ and $p\in (2N/(N+1),2]$ for which we show \emph{complete extinction}. Instantaneous shrinking and single point extinction take place in particular for the semilinear viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation when $p=2$ and $q\in (0,1)$ and seem to have remained unnoticed.

Finite speed of propagation and waiting time for a thin film Muskat problem

Finite speed of propagation is established for non-negative weak solutions to a thin film approximation of the two-phase Muskat problem. The temporal expansion rate of the support matches the scale invariance of the system. Moreover, we determine sufficient conditions on the initial data for the occurrence of waiting time phenomena.
