Star formation histories and evolution of 35 brightest E+A galaxies from SDSS DR5

We pick out the 35 brightest galaxies from Goto's E+A galaxies catalogue which are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5. The spectra of E+As are prominently characterized by the strong Balmer absorption lines but little [Oii] or H_alpha emission lines. In this work we study the stellar populations of the sample galaxies by fitting their spectra using ULySS, which is a robust full spectrum fitting method. We fit each of the sample with 1-population (a single stellar population-a SSP) and 3-population (3 SSPs) models, separately. By 1-population fits, we obtain SSP-equivalent ages and metallicities which correspond to the `luminosity-weighted' averages. By 3-population fits, we divide components into three groups in age (old stellar population-OSP, intermediate-age stellar population-ISP, and young stellar population-YSP), and then get the optimal age, metallicity and population fractions in both mass and light for OSP, ISP and YSP. During the fits, both Pegase.HR/Elodie3.1 and Vazdekis/Miles are used as two independent population models. The two models result in generally consistent conclusions as follows: for all the sample galaxies, YSPs (< 1Gyr) make important contributions to the light. However, the dominant contributors to mass are OSPs. We also reconstruct the smoothing star formation histories (SFHs) by giving star formation rate (SFR) versus evolutionary age. In addition, we fit the E+A sample and 34 randomly selected elliptical galaxies with 2-population (2 SSPs) model. We obtain the equivalent age of old components for each of the E+A sample and elliptical galaxies. By comparison, the old components of E+As are statistically much younger than those of ellipticals. From the standpoint of the stellar population age, this probably provides an evidence for the proposed evolutionary link from E+As to early-types (E/S0s).

Star formation history of KDG 61 and KDG 64 from spectroscopy and colour-magnitude diagrams

A study of two dE/dSph members of the nearby M 81 group of galaxies, KDG 61 and UGC 5442 = KDG 64, has been made. Direct Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images and integrated-light spectra of 6 m telescope of Special Astrophysical Observatory of Russian Academy of Sciences have been used for quantitative star formation history analysis. The spectroscopic and colour-magnitude diagrams analysis gives consistent results. These galaxies appear to be dominated by an old population (12-14 Gyr) of low metallicity ([Fe/H]~-1.5). Stars of ages about 1 to 4 Gyr have been detected in both galaxies. The later population shows marginal metal enrichment. We do not detect any significant radial gradients in age or metallicity in these galaxies. Our radial velocity measurement suggests that the HII knot on the line-of-sight of KDG 61 is not gravitationally attached to the galaxy.

Formation and Evolution of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies - II. Spatially resolved star-formation histories

We present optical VLT spectroscopy of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (or dEs) comparable in mass to NGC 205, and belonging to the Fornax cluster and to nearby groups of galaxies. Using ULySS and STECKMAP, we derive radial profiles of the SSP-equivalent ages, metallicities and star-formation histories. The old stellar population of the dEs, which dominates their mass, is likely coeval with that of massive ellipticals or bulges, but the star formation efficiency is lower. Important intermediate age (1-5 Gyr) populations, and frequently tails of star formation until recent times are detected. These histories are reminiscent of their lower mass dSph counterparts of the Local Group. Most galaxies (10/16) show significant metallicity gradients, with metallicity declining by 0.5 dex over one half-light radius on average. These gradients are already present in the old population. The flattened (or discy), rotating objects (6/16) have flat metallicity profiles. This may be consistent with a distinct origin for these galaxies or it may be due to their geometry. The central SSP-equivalent age varies between 1 and 6 Gyr, with the age slowly increasing with radius in the vast majority of objects. The group and cluster galaxies have similar radial gradients and star-formation histories. The strong and old metallicity gradients place important constraints on the possible formation scenarios of dEs. Numerical simulations of the formation of spherical low-mass galaxies reproduce these gradients, but they require a longer time for them to build up. A gentle depletion of the gas, by ram-pressure stripping or starvation, could drive the gas-rich, star-forming progenitors to the present dEs.

ULySS: A Full Spectrum Fitting Package

Aims. We provide an easy-to-use full-spectrum fitting package and explore its applications to (i) the determination of the stellar atmospheric parameters and (ii) the study of the history of stellar populations. Methods. We developed ULySS, a package to fit spectroscopic observations against a linear combination of non-linear model components convolved with a parametric line-of-sight velocity distribution. The minimization can be either local or global, and determines all the parameters in a single fit. We use chi2 maps, convergence maps and Monte-Carlo simulations to study the degeneracies, local minima and to estimate the errors. Results. We show the importance of determining the shape of the continuum simultaneously to the other parameters by including a multiplicative polynomial in the model (without prior pseudo-continuum determination, or rectification of the spectrum). We also stress the benefice of using an accurate line-spread function, depending on the wavelength, so that the line-shape of the models properly match the observation. For simple models, i. e., to measure the atmospheric parameters or the age/metallicity of a single-age stellar population, there is often a unique minimum, or when local minima exist they can unambiguously be recognized. For more complex models, Monte-Carlo simulations are required to assess the validity of the solution. Conclusions. The ULySS package is public, simple to use and flexible. The full spectrum fitting makes optimal usage of the signal.

Sigma-drop in galaxies and the sigma-metallicity degeneracy

In some galaxies, the central velocity dispersion, sigma, is depressed with respect to the surroundings. This sigma-drop phenomenon may have different physical origins, bearing information about the internal dynamics of the host galaxy. In this article, we stress the importance also of observational artifacts due to the sigma-metallicity degeneracy: when a spectrum of a population is compared with a template of miss-matched metallicity, the velocity dispersion may be wrongly estimated. A sigma-drop may appear in place of a metallicity peak. The discussion is illustrated using VLT/FORS spectra of diffuse elliptical galaxies. Some of the sigma-drop galaxies reported in the literature may be analysis artifacts.

Kinematics and Stellar Populations of Low-Luminosity Early-Type Galaxies in the Abell 496 Cluster

The morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity early-type galaxies in clusters have until now been limited to a few relatively nearby clusters such as Virgo or Fornax. Scenarii for the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies in clusters are therefore not well constrained. We investigate here the morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity galaxies in the relaxed cluster Abell 496 (z=0.0330). Deep multiband imaging obtained with the CFHT Megacam allowed us to select a sample of faint galaxies (-18.8<M_B<-15.1 mag). We observed 118 galaxies spectroscopically with the ESO VLT FLAMES/Giraffe spectrograph (R=6300). We present structural analysis and colour maps for the 48 galaxies belonging to the cluster. We fit the spectra of 46 objects with PEGASE.HR synthetic spectra to estimate the ages, metallicities, and velocity dispersions. We computed values of $α$/Fe abundance ratios from the measurements of Lick indices. High-precision estimates of stellar population properties have been obtained for a large sample of faint galaxies in a cluster, allowing for the extension of relations between stellar populations and internal kinematics to the low-velocity dispersion regime. We have revealed a peculiar population of elliptical galaxies in the core of the cluster, resembling massive early-type galaxies by their stellar population properties and velocity dispersions, but having luminosities of about 2 mag fainter. External mechanisms of gas removal (ram pressure stripping and gravitational harassment) are more likely to have occurred than internal mechanisms such as supernova-driven winds. The violent tidal stripping of intermediate-luminosity, early-type galaxies in the cluster core can explain the properties of the peculiar elliptical galaxies surrounding the cD galaxy.

Towards a Solution for the Ca II Triplet Puzzle : Results from Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies

We present new estimates of ages and metallicities, based on FORS/VLT optical (4400-5500A) spectroscopy, of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE's) in the Fornax Cluster and in Southern Groups. These dE's are more metal-rich and younger than previous estimates based on narrow-band photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy. For our sample we find a mean metallicity [Z/H] = -0.33 dex and mean age 3.5 Gyr, consistent with similar samples of dE's in other environments (Local Group, Virgo). Three dE's in our sample show emission lines and very young ages. This suggests that some dE's formed stars until a very recent epoch and were self-enriched by a long star formation history. Previous observations of large near-infrared (~8500A) Ca II absorption strengths in these dE's are in good agreement with the new metallicity estimates, solving part of the so-called Calcium puzzle.

NBursts: Simultaneous Extraction of Internal Kinematics and Parametrized SFH from Integrated Light Spectra

We present a novel approach for simultaneous extraction of stellar population parameters and internal kinematics from the spectra integrated along a line of sight. We fit a template spectrum into an observed one in a pixel space using a non-linear $χ^2$ minimization in the multidimensional parameter space, including characteristics of the line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) and parametrized star formation history (SFH). Our technique has been applied to IFU and multi-object spectroscopy of low-luminosity early type galaxies.

Analysis of stellar populations with large empirical libraries at high spectral resolution

The stellar population models dramatically progressed with the arrival of large and complete libraries, ELODIE, CFLIB (=Indo-US) and MILES at a relatively high resolution. We show that the quality of the fits is not anymore limited by the size of the stellar libraries in a large range of ages (0.1 to 10 Gyrs) and metallicities (-2 to +0.4 dex). The main limitations of the empirical stellar libraries are (i) the coverage of the parameters space (lack of hot stars of low metallicity), (ii) the precision and homogeneity of the atmospheric parameters and (iii) the non-resolution of individual element abundances (in particular [$α$/Fe]). Detailed abundance measurements in the large libraries, and usage of theoretical libraries are probably the next steps, and we show that a combination between an empirical (ELODIE) and a theoretical library (Coelho et al. 2005) immediately improves the modeling of ($α$-enhanced) globular clusters.

Comparison of different spectral population models

We have compared simple stellar populations (SSPs) generated with different population synthesis tools: BC03, Vazdekis and Pegase.HR and different stellar libraries: ELODIE3.1, SteLib and MILES. We find that BC03/SteLib SSPs are biased toward solar metallicity, however Pegase.HR/ELODIE3.1 and Vazdekis/MILES are extremely consistent. The extensive coverage of the space of atmospheric parameters in the large stellar libraries allows precise synthesis for a large range of ages (0.1 .. 10 Gyr) and metallicities (-2 .. +0.4 dex) limited by the quality of the determination of stellar parameters (like temperature scale of the giants).

Age and metallicity of Galactic clusters from full spectrum fitting

We are using full spectrum fitting to determine the ages and metallicities of Galactic clusters (M67 and globular clusters). We find that the method is very accurate to measure the metallicity. Blue horizontal branches are well identified as a 'young' sub-component, and the age of the 'old' component is in fair agreement with CMD determinations.

Kinematics and stellar populations of the dwarf elliptical galaxy IC 3653

We present the first 3D observations of a diffuse elliptical galaxy (dE). The good quality data (S/N up to 40) reveal the kinematical signature of an embedded stellar disc, reminiscent of what is commonly observed in elliptical galaxies, though similarity of their origins is questionable. Colour map built from HST ACS images confirms the presence of this disc. Its characteristic scale (about 3 arcsec = 250 pc) is about a half of galaxy's effective radius, and its metallicity is 0.1-0.2 dex larger than the underlying population. Fitting the spectra with synthetic single stellar populations (SSP) we found an SSP-equivalent age of 5 Gyr and nearly solar metallicity [Fe/H]=-0.06 dex. We checked that these determinations are consistent with those based on Lick indices, but have smaller error bars. The kinematical discovery of a stellar disc in dE gives additional support to an evolutionary link from dwarf irregular galaxies due to stripping of the gas against the intra-cluster medium.

Young Nuclei in Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies

We report discovery of young embedded structures in three diffuse elliptical galaxies (dE) in the Virgo cluster: IC 783, IC 3468, and IC 3509. We performed 3D spectroscopic observations of these galaxies using the MPFS spectrograph at the Russian 6-m telescope, and obtained spatially resolved distributions of kinematical and stellar population parameters by fitting high-resolution PEGASE.HR synthetic single stellar populations (SSP) in the pixel space. In all three galaxies, the luminosity weighted age of the nuclei, about 4 Gyr, is considerably younger than population in the outer regions of the galaxies. We discuss two possibilities to acquire the observed structures -- dissipative merger event and different ram pressure stripping efficiency during two consequent crossings of the Virgo cluster centre.

Internal kinematics and stellar populations of dE galaxies: Clues to their formation/evolution

What is the origin of the numerous population of diffuse elliptical galaxies (dE) in clusters? These galaxies formed their stars several billion years ago and lost their gas. Though the stellar winds resulting from star formation and the interactions with the environment undoubedtly play a role, their respective role and details of the mechanism of this evolution is still debated. In this presentation we will review the first 3D spectroscopic observations of a handful of dE galaxies. These data reveal complex kinematical structures, with embedded discs and counter rotating cores, and they open extremely promising perspectives for studying the history of the stellar population throughout these various features. The presence of disks, which was already known from detailed image analysis, and of complex kinematics and the new constraints on the stellar population enforce the hypothesis of the evolutionary connection between dEs and disk galaxies.

Modelling and interpreting optical spectra of galaxies at R=10000

One way to extract more information from the integrated light of galaxies is to improve the spectral resolution at which observations and analysis are carried out. The population synthesis code currently providing the highest spectral resolution is Pegase-HR, which was made available by D. Le Borgne et al. in 2004. Based on an empirical stellar library, it provides synthetic spectra between 4000 and 6800 A at lambda/d(lambda)=10000 for any star formation history, with or without chemical evolution. Such a resolution is particularly useful for the study of low mass galaxies, massive star clusters, or other galaxy regions with low internal velocity dispersions. After a summary of the main features of Pegase-HR and comparisons with other population synthesis codes, this paper focuses on the inversion of optical galaxy spectra. We explore the limits of what information can or can not be recovered, based on theoretical principles and extensive simulations. First applications to extragalactic objects are shown.

Diffuse elliptical galaxies, the first 3D spectroscopic observations

Diffuse elliptical galaxies (or dwarfs) are the numerically dominant population in clusters like Virgo and Fornax. They carry only a few percent of the baryonic mass but are very sensitive to the environment; so they keep a fossil record of the environmental conditions over the life of the cluster. Recent observations of their kinematics and stellar populations cast new insights to their evolutionary history. The most promising constraints come from integral field spectroscopy. We present for the first time 3D observations of a dwarf elliptical galaxy, IC 3653. These good signal to noise data (S/N=30) obtained with the Russian 6 meters telescope reveal a complex kinematics reminiscent of that commonly observed in elliptical galaxies. The disk-like feature has no morphological counterpart in ACS data. Kinematical evidences for thin stellar disks confirm and enforce the earlier imagery observations and strengthen the connection with disk galaxies. We suggest that dE galaxies formed from small units, developing a disk. This disk was heated or destroyed by the winds induced by the star formation, and the galaxy was later depleted from the remaining gas by ram-pressure stripping when crossing the cluster.

Evolutionary synthesis of galaxies at high spectral resolution with the code PEGASE-HR

We present PEGASE-HR, a new stellar population synthesis program generating high resolution spectra (R=10 000) over the optical range lambda=400--680 nm. It links the spectro-photometric model of galaxy evolution PEGASE.2 (Fioc & Rocca-Volmerange 1997) to an updated version of the ELODIE library of stellar spectra observed with the 193 cm telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (Prugniel & Soubiran 2001a). The ELODIE star set gives a fairly complete coverage of the Hertzprung-Russell (HR) diagram and makes it possible to synthesize populations in the range [Fe/H]=-2 to +0.4. This code is an exceptional tool for exploring signatures of metallicity, age, and kinematics. We focus on a detailed study of the sensitivity to age and metallicity of the high-resolution stellar absorption lines and of the classical metallic indices proposed until now to solve the age-metallicity degeneracy. Validity tests on several stellar lines are performed by comparing our predictions for Lick indices to the models of other groups. The comparison with the lower resolution library BaSeL (Lejeune et al. 1997) confirms the quality of the ELODIE library when used for simple stellar populations (SSPs) from 10 Myr to 20 Gyr. Predictions for the evolved populations of globular clusters and elliptical galaxies are given and compared to observational data. Two new high-resolution indices are proposed around the Hgamma line. They should prove useful in the analysis of spectra from the new generation of telescopes and spectrographs.
