Algorithms for minimal Picard-Fuchs operators of Feynman integrals

In even space-time dimensions the multi-loop Feynman integrals are integrals of rational function in projective space. By using an algorithm that extends the Griffiths--Dwork reduction for the case of projective hypersurfaces with singularities, we derive Fuchsian linear differential equations, the Picard--Fuchs equations, with respect to kinematic parameters for a large class of massive multi-loop Feynman integrals. With this approach we obtain the differential operator for Feynman integrals to high multiplicities and high loop orders. Using recent factorisation algorithms we give the minimal order differential operator in most of the cases studied in this paper. Amongst our results are that the order of Picard--Fuchs operator for the generic massive two-point $n-1$-loop sunset integral in two-dimensions is $2^{n}-\binom{n+1}{\left\lfloor \frac{n+1}{2}\right\rfloor }$ supporting the conjecture that the sunset Feynman integrals are relative periods of Calabi--Yau of dimensions $n-2$. We have checked this explicitly till six loops. As well, we obtain a particular Picard--Fuchs operator of order 11 for the massive five-point tardigrade non-planar two-loop integral in four dimensions for generic mass and kinematic configurations, suggesting that it arises from $K3$ surface with Picard number 11. We determine as well Picard--Fuchs operators of two-loop graphs with various multiplicities in four dimensions, finding Fuchsian differential operators with either Liouvillian or elliptic solutions.

Motivic geometry of two-loop Feynman integrals

We study the geometry and Hodge theory of the cubic hypersurfaces attached to two-loop Feynman integrals for generic physical parameters. We show that the Hodge structure attached to planar two-loop Feynman graphs decomposes into mixed Tate pieces and the Hodge structures of families of hyperelliptic, elliptic, or rational curves depending on the space-time dimension. For two-loop graphs with a small number of edges, we give more precise results. In particular, we recover a result of Bloch arXiv:2105.06132 that in the well-known double box example, there is an underlying family of elliptic curves, and we give a concrete description of these elliptic curves. We argue that the motive for the non-planar two-loop tardigrade graph is that of a K3 surface of Picard number 11 and determine the generic lattice polarization. Lastly, we show that generic members of the ice cream cone family of graph hypersurfaces correspond to pairs of sunset Calabi--Yau varieties.

Effective Field Theory and Applications: Weak Field Observables from Scattering Amplitudes in Quantum Field Theory

In this chapter, we will review the field-theoretic treatment of General Relativity based on an effective field theory extension of the Einstein-Hilbert action. This pragmatic route to low-energy quantum effects in gravity critically underpins miscellaneous investigations of phenomenological and quantum extensions of General Relativity. We discuss how it allows quantum field theory to be a theoretical laboratory for testing Einstein's theory of gravity and demonstrate the current state of the art of an efficient and practical scheme for evaluating the classical components of perturbative weak-field scattering amplitudes until the fourth post-Minkowskian order. Such results complement numerical predictions in Einstein's theory of gravity.

Analytical evaluation of AdS${}_4$ Witten diagrams as flat space multi-loop Feynman integrals

We describe a systematic approach for the evaluation of Witten diagrams for multi-loop scattering amplitudes of a conformally coupled scalar $ϕ^4$-theory in Euclidean AdS$_4$, by recasting the Witten diagrams as flat space Feynman integrals. We derive closed form expressions for the anomalous dimensions for all double-trace operators up to the second order in the coupling constant. We explain the relation between the flat space unitarity methods and the discontinuities of the short distance expansion on the boundary of Witten diagrams.

On an Exponential Representation of the Gravitational S-Matrix

An exponential representation of the S-matrix provides a natural framework for understanding the semi-classical limit of scattering amplitudes. While sharing some similarities with the eikonal formalism it differs from it in details. Computationally, rules are simple because pieces that must be subtracted are given by combinations of unitarity cuts. Analyzing classical gravitational scattering to third Post-Minkowskian order in both maximal supergravity and Einstein gravity we find agreement with other approaches, including the contributions from radiation reaction terms. The kinematical relation for the two-body problem in isotropic coordinates follows immediately from this procedure, again with the inclusion of radiation reaction pieces up to third Post-Minkowskian order.

Remodeling the Effective One-Body Formalism in Post-Minkowskian Gravity

The Effective One-Body formalism of the gravitational two-body problem in general relativity is reconsidered in the light of recent scattering amplitude calculations. Based on the kinematic relationship between momenta and the effective potential, we consider an energy-dependent effective metric describing the scattering in terms of an Effective One-Body problem for the reduced mass. The identification of the effective metric simplifies considerably in isotropic coordinates when combined with a redefined angular momentum map. While the effective energy-dependent metric as expected is not unique, solutions can be chosen perturbatively in the Post-Minkowskian expansion without the need to introduce non-metric corrections. By a canonical transformation, our condition maps to the one based on the standard angular momentum map. Expanding our metric around the Schwarzschild solution we recover the solution based on additional non-metric contributions.

Classical Gravity from Loop Amplitudes

We describe an efficient method for extracting the parts of $D$-dimensional loop integrals that are needed to derive observables in classical general relativity from scattering amplitudes. Our approach simplifies the soft-region method of integration by judiciously combining terms before the final integrations. We demonstrate the method by computing the required integrals for black-hole scattering to the second Post-Minkowskian order in Einstein gravity coupled to scalars. We also confirm recent results at the third Post-Minkowskian order regarding universality and high-energy behavior of gravitational interactions in maximal supergravity.

Single-valued hyperlogarithms, correlation functions and closed string amplitudes

We give new proofs of a global and a local property of the integrals which compute closed string theory amplitudes at genus zero. Both kinds of properties are related to the newborn theory of single-valued periods, and our proofs provide an intuitive understanding of this relation. The global property, known in physics as the KLT formula, is a factorisation of the closed string integrals into products of pairs of open string integrals. We deduce it by identifying closed string integrals with special values of single-valued correlation functions in two dimensional conformal field theory, and by obtaining their conformal block decomposition. The local property is of number theoretical nature. We write the asymptotic expansion coefficients as multiple integrals over the complex plane of special functions known as single-valued hyperlogarithms. We develop a theory of integration of single-valued hyperlogarithms, and we use it to demonstrate that the asymptotic expansion coefficients belong to the ring of single-valued multiple zeta values.

Building blocks of closed and open string amplitudes

In this text we review various relations between building blocks of closed and open string amplitudes at tree-level and genus one. We explain that KLT relations between tree-level closed and open string amplitudes follow from the holomorphic factorisation of conformal correlation functions on conformal blocks. We give a simple hands-on evaluation of the $α'$-expansion of tree-level closed string amplitudes displaying the special single-valued nature of the coefficients. We show that the same techniques can be used also at genus-one, where we give a new proof of the single-valued nature of the coefficients of 2-point closed string amplitudes. We conclude by giving an overview of some open problems.

The Schwarzschild-Tangherlini metric from scattering amplitudes in various dimensions

We derive the static Schwarzschild-Tangherlini metric by extracting the classical contributions from the multi-loop vertex functions of a graviton emitted from a massive scalar field. At each loop orders the classical contribution is proportional to a unique master integral given by the massless sunset integral. By computing the scattering amplitudes up to three-loop order in general dimension, we explicitly derive the expansion of the metric up to the fourth post-Minkowskian order $O(G_N^4)$ in four, five and six dimensions. There are ultraviolet divergences that are cancelled with the introduction of higher-derivative non-minimal couplings. The standard Schwarzschild-Tangherlini is recovered by absorbing their effects by an appropriate coordinate transformation induced from the de Donder gauge condition.

On Post-Minkowskian Hamiltonians in General Relativity

We describe the computation of post-Minkowskian Hamiltonians in General Relativity from scattering amplitudes. Using a relativistic Lippmann-Schwinger equation, we relate perturbative amplitudes of massive scalars coupled to gravity to the post-Minkowskian Hamiltonians of classical General Relativity to any order in Newton's constant. We illustrate this by deriving an Hamiltonian for binary black holes without spin up to 2nd order in the post-Minkowskian expansion and demonstrate explicitly the equivalence with the recently proposed method based on an effective field theory matching.

New Bounds on Dark Energy Induced Fifth Forces

We consider the gravitational Wilsonian effective action at low energy when all the particles of the standard model have decoupled. When the ${\cal R}^2$ terms dominate, the theory is equivalent to a scalar-tensor theory with the universal coupling $β=1/\sqrt 6$ to matter for which we present strong lower and upper bounds on the scalaron mass $m$ obtained by using results from the Eöt-Wash experiment on the modification of the inverse-square law, the observations of the hot gas of galaxy clusters and the Planck satellite data on the neutrino masses. In terms of the range of the scalar interaction mediated over a distance of order $m^{-1}$, this leads to the small interval $4\,μm \lesssim m^{-1} \lesssim 68\, μm$ within reach of future experimental tests of deviations from Newton's gravitational inverse-square law.

General Relativity from Scattering Amplitudes

We outline the program to apply modern quantum field theory methods to calculate observables in classical general relativity through a truncation to classical terms of the multi-graviton two-body on-shell scattering amplitudes between massive fields. Since only long-distance interactions corresponding to non-analytic pieces need to be included, unitarity cuts provide substantial simplifications for both post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions. We illustrate this quantum field theoretic approach to classical general relativity by computing the interaction potentials to second order in the post-Newtonian expansion, as well as the scattering functions for two massive objects to second order in the post-Minkowskian expansion. We also derive an all-order exact result for gravitational light-by-light scattering.

A Vertex Operator Algebra Construction of the Colour-Kinematics Dual numerator

We derive a vertex operator based expression for the kinematic numerators of Yang-Mills amplitudes by applying the momentum kernel formalism to open string amplitudes. The expression involves an $α'$-weighted commutator induced by the monodromy relations between the colour ordered Yang-Mills amplitudes, which mirrors the $α'$ deformed colour structure observed in open string and semi-abelian $Z$-theory. The kinematic algebra given by this construction contains the Lie algebra of diffeomorphism as an obvious sub-algebra.

Feynman integrals, toric geometry and mirror symmetry

This expository text is about using toric geometry and mirror symmetry for evaluating Feynman integrals. We show that the maximal cut of a Feynman integral is a GKZ hypergeometric series. We explain how this allows to determine the minimal differential operator acting on the Feynman integrals. We illustrate the method on sunset integrals in two dimensions at various loop orders. The graph polynomials of the multi-loop sunset Feynman graphs lead to reflexive polytopes containing the origin and the associated variety are ambient spaces for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. Therefore the sunset family is a natural home for mirror symmetry techniques. We review the evaluation of the two-loop sunset integral as an elliptic dilogarithm and as a trilogarithm. The equivalence between these two expressions is a consequence of 1) the local mirror symmetry for the non-compact Calabi-Yau three-fold obtained as the anti-canonical hypersurface of the del Pezzo surface of degree 6 defined by the sunset graph polynomial and 2) that the sunset Feynman integral is expressed in terms of the local Gromov-Witten prepotential of this del Pezzo surface.

$R^2$ Dark Energy in the Laboratory

We analyse the role, on large cosmological scales and laboratory experiments, of the leading curvature squared contributions to the low energy effective action of gravity. We argue for a natural relationship $c_0λ^2\simeq 1$ at low-energy between the ${\cal R}^2$ coefficients $c_0$ of the Ricci scalar squared term in this expansion and the dark energy scale $Λ=(λM_{\rm Pl})^4$ in four dimensional Planck mass units. We show how the compatibility between the acceleration of the expansion rate of the Universe, local tests of gravity and the quantum stability of the model all converge to select such a relationship up to a coefficient which should be determined experimentally. When embedding this low energy theory of gravity into candidates for its ultraviolet completion, we find that the proposed relationship is guaranteed in string-inspired supergravity models with modulus stabilisation and supersymmetry breaking leading to de Sitter compactifications. In this case, the scalar degree of freedom of ${\cal R}^2$ gravity is associated to a volume modulus. Once written in terms of a scalar-tensor theory, the effective theory corresponds to a massive scalar field coupled with the universal strength $β=1/\sqrt{6}$ to the matter stress-energy tensor. When the relationship $c_0λ^2\simeq 1$ is realised we find that on astrophysical scales and in cosmology the scalar field is ultralocal and therefore no effect arises on such large scales. On the other hand, the scalar field mass is tightly constrained by the non-observation of fifth forces in torsion pendulum experiments such as Eöt-Wash. It turns out that the observation of the dark energy scale in cosmology implies that the scalar field could be detectable by fifth force experiments in the near future.
