Graph potentials and topological quantum field theories

We introduce graph potentials, which are Laurent polynomials associated to (colored) trivalent graphs. We show that the birational type of the graph potential only depends on the homotopy type of the colored graph, and use this to define a topological quantum field theory. A similar construction was recently introduced independently by Kontsevich--Odesskii under the name of multiplicative kernels. We end our paper by giving an efficient computational method to compute its partition function. This is the first paper in a series, and we give a survey of the applications of graph potentials in the other parts.

Hochschild cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

We compute the Hochschild cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces and observe that it is, in general, not determined solely by the Hochschild cohomology of the surface, but by its "Hochschild-Serre cohomology": the bigraded vector space obtained by taking Hochschild homologies with coefficients in powers of the Serre functor. As applications, we obtain various consequences on the deformation theory of the Hilbert schemes; in particular, we recover and extend results of Fantechi, Boissière, and Hitchin. Our method is to compute more generally for any smooth proper algebraic variety $X$ the Hochschild-Serre cohomology of the symmetric quotient stack $[X^n/\mathfrak{S}_n]$, in terms of the Hochschild-Serre cohomology of $X$.

On Chow rings of quiver moduli

We describe the point class and Todd class in the Chow ring of a quiver moduli space, building on a result of Ellingsrud-Strømme. This, together with the presentation of the Chow ring by the second author, makes it possible to compute integrals on quiver moduli. To do so we construct a canonical morphism of universal representations in great generality, and along the way point out its relation to the Kodaira-Spencer morphism. We illustrate the results by computing some invariants of some "small" Kronecker moduli spaces. We also prove that the first non-trivial (6-dimensional) Kronecker quiver moduli space is isomorphic to the zero locus of a general section of $\mathcal{Q}^\vee(1)$ on $\operatorname{Gr}(2,8)$.

Hochschild cohomology of generalised Grassmannians

We compute the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg decomposition of the Hochschild cohomology of generalised Grassmannians, i.e. partial flag varieties associated to maximal parabolic subgroups in a simple algebraic group. We explain how the decomposition is concentrated in global sections for so-called (co)minuscule and (co)adjoint generalised Grassmannians, and we suggest that for (almost) all other cases the same vanishing of the higher cohomology does not hold. Our methods give an explicit partial description of the Gerstenhaber algebra structure for the Hochschild cohomology of cominuscule and adjoint generalised Grassmannians. We also consider the case of adjoint partial flag varieties in type A, which are associated to certain submaximal parabolic subgroups.

Derived categories of flips and cubic hypersurfaces

A classical result of Bondal-Orlov states that a standard flip in birational geometry gives rise to a fully faithful functor between derived categories of coherent sheaves. We complete their embedding into a semiorthogonal decomposition by describing the complement. As an application, we can lift the "quadratic Fano correspondence" (due to Galkin-Shinder) in the Grothendieck ring of varieties between a smooth cubic hypersurface, its Fano variety of lines, and its Hilbert square, to a semiorthogonal decomposition. We also show that the Hilbert square of a cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 3 is again a Fano variety, so in particular the Fano variety of lines on a cubic hypersurface is a Fano visitor. The most interesting case is that of a cubic fourfold, where this exhibits the first higher-dimensional hyperkähler variety as a Fano visitor.

Projectivity and effective global generation of determinantal line bundles on quiver moduli

We give a moduli-theoretic treatment of the existence and properties of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations, avoiding methods from geometric invariant theory. Using the existence criteria of Alper--Halpern-Leistner--Heinloth, we show that for many stability functions, the stack of semistable representations admits an adequate moduli space, and prove that this moduli space is proper over the moduli space of semisimple representations. We construct a natural determinantal line bundle that descends to a semiample line bundle on the moduli space and provide new effective bounds for global generation. For an acyclic quiver, we show that this line bundle is ample, thus giving a modern proof of the fact that the moduli space is projective.

Graph potentials and symplectic geometry of moduli spaces of vector bundles

We give the first examples of Fano manifolds with multiple optimal tori, i.e.~we construct monotone Lagrangian tori $L$, such that the weighted number of holomorphic Maslov index two discs with boundary on $L$ equals the upper bound given by the symplectic invariant $\limsup_n ([m_0(L)^n]_{x^0})^{1/n}$, where $m_0(L)$ is the Floer potential. To every trivalent graph $γ$ of genus $g$ we associate an optimal torus $L_γ$ on the celebrated symplectic Fano manifold $\mathcal{N}_g$ (of complex dimension $3g-3$) with $\mathrm{T}_{\mathcal{N}_g} = 8g-8$), given by the character variety of rank 2 on a genus $g$ surface with prescribed odd monodromy at a puncture, We moreover show that all pairs $(\mathcal{N}_g,L_γ)$ are pairwise non-isotopic. In particular, we confirm a form of mirror symmetry between the A-model of the pairs $(\mathcal{N}_g,L_γ)$ (and also spaces $\mathcal{N}_g$ standalone) and B-model of graph potentials, a family of Laurent polynomials we introduced in earlier work. A crucial input from outside of symplectic geometry is an analysis of Manon's toric degenerations of algebro-geometric models $\mathrm{M}_C(2,\mathcal{L})$ for the spaces $\mathcal{N}_g$, as moduli spaces of stable rank $2$ bundles on an algebraic curve with a fixed determinant, constructed using conformal field theory.

Projectivity of the moduli space of vector bundles on a curve

We discuss the projectivity of the moduli space of semistable vector bundles on a curve of genus $g\geq 2$. This is a classical result from the 1960s, obtained using geometric invariant theory. We outline a modern approach that combines the recent machinery of good moduli spaces with determinantal line bundle techniques. The crucial step producing an ample line bundle follows an argument by Faltings with improvements by Esteves-Popa. We hope to promote this approach as a blueprint for other projectivity arguments.

Decompositions of moduli spaces of vector bundles and graph potentials

We propose a conjectural semiorthogonal decomposition for the derived category of the moduli space of stable rank 2 bundles with fixed determinant of odd degree, independently formulated by Narasimhan. We discuss some evidence for, and furthermore propose semiorthogonal decompositions with additional structure. We also discuss two other decompositions. One is a decomposition of this moduli space in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, which relates to various known motivic decompositions. The other is the critical value decomposition of a candidate mirror Landau-Ginzburg model given by graph potentials, which in turn is related under mirror symmetry to Munoz's decomposition of quantum cohomology. This corresponds to an orthogonal decomposition of the Fukaya category. We will explain how these decompositions can be seen as evidence for the conjectural semiorthogonal decomposition.

Homological projective duality for the Segre cubic

The Segre cubic and Castelnuovo-Richmond quartic are two projectively dual hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$, with a long and rich history starting in the 19th century. We will explain how Kuznetsov's theory of homological projective duality lifts this projective duality to a relationship between the derived category of a small resolution of the Segre cubic and a small resolution of the Coble fourfold, the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^4$ ramified along the Castelnuovo-Richmond quartic. Homological projective duality then provides a description of the derived categories of linear sections, which we will describe to illustrate the theory. The case of the Segre cubic and Coble fourfold is non-trivial enough to exhibit interesting behavior, whilst being easy enough to explain the general machinery in this special and very classical case.

Polyvector fields for Fano 3-folds

We compute the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg decomposition of the Hochschild cohomology of Fano 3-folds. This is the first step in understanding the non-trivial Gerstenhaber algebra structure, and yields some initial insights in the classification of Poisson structures on Fano 3-folds of higher Picard rank.

Derived categories of the Cayley plane and the coadjoint Grassmannian of type F

For the derived category of the Cayley plane, which is the cominuscule Grassmannian of Dynkin type $\mathrm{E}_6$, a full Lefschetz exceptional collection was constructed by Faenzi and Manivel. A general hyperplane section of the Cayley plane is the coadjoint Grassmannian of Dynkin type $\mathrm{F}_4$. We show that the restriction of the Faenzi-Manivel collection to such a hyperplane section gives a full Lefschetz exceptional collection, providing the first example of a full exceptional collection on a homogeneous variety of Dynkin type $\mathrm{F}$. We also describe the residual categories of these Lefschetz collections, confirming conjectures of the second and third named author for the Cayley plane and its hyperplane section. The latter description is based on a general result of independent interest, relating residual categories of a variety and its hyperplane section.

Derived categories of (nested) Hilbert schemes

In this paper we provide several results regarding the structure of derived categories of (nested) Hilbert schemes of points. We show that the criteria of Krug-Sosna and Addington for the universal ideal sheaf functor to be fully faithful resp. a $\mathbb{P}$-functor are sharp. Then we show how to embed multiple copies of the derived category of the surface using these fully faithful functors. We also give a semiorthogonal decomposition for the nested Hilbert scheme of points on a surface, and finally we give an elementary proof of a semiorthogonal decomposition due to Toda for the symmetric product of a curve.

Automorphisms of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

We show that every automorphism of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on a weak Fano or general type surface is natural, i.e. induced by an automorphism of the surface, unless the surface is a product of curves and $n=2$. In the exceptional case there exists a unique non-natural automorphism. More generally, we prove that any isomorphism between Hilbert schemes of points on smooth projective surfaces, where one of the surfaces is weak Fano or of general type and not equal to the product of curves, is natural. We also show that every automorphism of the Hilbert scheme of $2$ points on $\mathbb{P}^n$ is natural.

Relative tensor triangular Chow groups for coherent algebras

We apply the machinery of relative tensor triangular Chow groups to the action of the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a noetherian scheme $X$ on the derived category of quasi-coherent $\mathcal{A}$-modules, where $\mathcal{A}$ is a (not necessarily commutative) quasi-coherent $\mathcal{O}_X$-algebra. When $\mathcal{A}$ is commutative and coherent, we recover the tensor triangular Chow groups of the relative Spec of $\mathcal{A}$. We also obtain concrete descriptions for integral group algebras and hereditary orders over curves, and we investigate the relation of these invariants to the classical ideal class group of an order. An important tool for these computations is a new description of relative tensor triangular Chow groups as the image of a map in the K-theoretic localization sequence associated to a certain Verdier localization.

Construction of noncommutative surfaces with exceptional collections of length 4

Recently de Thanhoffer de Völcsey and Van den Bergh classified the Euler forms on a free abelian group of rank 4 having the properties of the Euler form of a smooth projective surface. There are two types of solutions: one corresponding to $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ (and noncommutative quadrics), and an infinite family indexed by the natural numbers. For $m=0,1$ there are commutative and noncommutative surfaces having this Euler form, whilst for $m\geq 2$ there are no commutative surfaces. In this paper we construct sheaves of maximal orders on surfaces having these Euler forms, giving a geometric construction for their numerical blowups.

Hochschild cohomology of noncommutative planes and quadrics

We give a description of the Hochschild cohomology for noncommutative planes (resp. quadrics) using the automorphism groups of the elliptic triples (resp. quadruples) that classify the Artin-Schelter regular $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras used to define noncommutative planes and quadrics. For elliptic triples the description of the automorphism groups is due to Bondal-Polishchuk, for elliptic quadruples it is new.

The Hochschild cohomology ring of a global quotient orbifold

We study the cup product on the Hochschild cohomology of the stack quotient [X/G] of a smooth quasi-projective variety X by a finite group G. More specifically, we construct a G-equivariant sheaf of graded algebras on X whose G-invariant global sections recover the associated graded algebra of the Hochschild cohomology of [X/G], under a natural filtration. This sheaf is an algebra over the polyvector fields T^{poly}_X on X, and is generated as a T^{poly}_X-algebra by the sum of the determinants det(N_{X^g}) of the normal bundles of the fixed loci in X. We employ our understanding of Hochschild cohomology to conclude that the analog of Kontsevich's formality theorem, for the cup product, does not hold for Deligne--Mumford stacks in general. We discuss relationships with orbifold cohomology, extending Ruan's cohomological conjectures. This employs a trivialization of the determinants in the case of a symplectic group action on a symplectic variety X, which requires (for the cup product) a nontrivial normalization missing in previous literature.
