More Modality, More AI: Exploring Design Opportunities of AI-Based Multi-modal Remote Monitoring Technologies for Early Detection of Mental Health Sequelae in Youth Concussion Patients

Anxiety, depression, and suicidality are common mental health sequelae following concussion in youth patients, often exacerbating concussion symptoms and prolonging recovery. Despite the critical need for early detection of these mental health symptoms, clinicians often face challenges in accurately collecting patients' mental health data and making clinical decision-making in a timely manner. Today's remote patient monitoring (RPM) technologies offer opportunities to objectively monitor patients' activities, but they were not specifically designed for youth concussion patients; moreover, the large amount of data collected by RPM technologies may also impose significant workloads on clinicians to keep up with and use the data. To address these gaps, we employed a three-stage study consisting of a formative study, interface design, and design evaluation. We first conducted a formative study through semi-structured interviews with six highly professional concussion clinicians and identified clinicians' key challenges in remotely collecting patient information and accessing patient treatment compliance. Subsequently, we proposed preliminary clinician-facing interface designs with the integration of AI-based RPM technologies (AI-RPM), followed by design evaluation sessions with highly professional concussion clinicians. Clinicians underscored the value of integrating multi-modal AI-RPM technologies to support their decision-making while emphasizing the importance of customizable interfaces through collaborative design and multiple responsible design considerations.

A Survey of Secure Semantic Communications

Semantic communication (SemCom) is regarded as a promising and revolutionary technology in 6G, aiming to transcend the constraints of ``Shannon's trap" by filtering out redundant information and extracting the core of effective data. Compared to traditional communication paradigms, SemCom offers several notable advantages, such as reducing the burden on data transmission, enhancing network management efficiency, and optimizing resource allocation. Numerous researchers have extensively explored SemCom from various perspectives, including network architecture, theoretical analysis, potential technologies, and future applications. However, as SemCom continues to evolve, a multitude of security and privacy concerns have arisen, posing threats to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of SemCom systems. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the technologies that can be utilized to secure SemCom. Firstly, we elaborate on the entire life cycle of SemCom, which includes the model training, model transfer, and semantic information transmission phases. Then, we identify the security and privacy issues that emerge during these three stages. Furthermore, we summarize the techniques available to mitigate these security and privacy threats, including data cleaning, robust learning, defensive strategies against backdoor attacks, adversarial training, differential privacy, cryptography, blockchain technology, model compression, and physical-layer security. Lastly, this paper outlines future research directions to guide researchers in related fields.

Nonlinear asymptotic stability of 2D Taylor-Couette flow in the exterior disk

In this paper, we consider the asymptotic stability of the 2D Taylor-Couette flow in the exterior disk, with a small kinematic viscosity $ν\ll 1$ and a large rotation coefficient $|B|$. Due to the degeneracy of the Taylor-Couette flow at infinity, we cannot expect the solution to decay exponentially in a space-time decoupled manner. As stated in previous work \cite{LZZ-25}, even space-time coupled exponential decay can not be expected, and at most, we can obtain space-time coupled polynomial decay. To handle the space-time coupled decay multiplier, the previous time-independent resolvent estimate methods no longer work. Therefore, this paper introduces time-dependent resolvent estimates to deal with the space-time coupled decay multiplier $Λ_k$. We remark that the choice of $Λ_k$ is not unique, here we just provide one way to construct it. Finally, as an application, we derive a transition threshold bound of $\frac12$, which is the same as that for the Taylor-Couette flow in the bounded region.

Tunable Fano and Dicke effects in quantum transport of double quantum dots sandwiched between topological insulators

We study the quantum transport in double quantum dots (DQD) sandwiched between surfaces of topological insulator (TI) Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$, which possess strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and $^{d}$C$_{3v}$ double group symmetry. Different from the spin-conserved case with two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) electrodes, the conductance displays a universal scaling relation for different Fermi energy associated with the topological nature/linear dispersion of topological surface states. The interplay between direct inter-dot tunneling and surface state mediated interaction leads to tunable Dicke and Fano effects with changing the inter-dot distance. We propose nano-rulers with different measurement range and resolution based on the Fano $q$-factor. Furthermore, when applying an in-plane Zeeman field, a crossover from a double-peak shape to a quad-peak shape in conductance curve appears. Moreover, the rotational symmetry of the system could also be revealed from the conductance pattern. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the quantum transport in the presence of electrode's SOC topological states.

Lessons and Insights from a Unifying Study of Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) in Visual Recognition

Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) has attracted significant attention due to the growth of pre-trained model sizes and the need to fine-tune (FT) them for superior downstream performance. Despite a surge in new PEFT methods, a systematic study to understand their performance and suitable application scenarios is lacking, leaving questions like "when to apply PEFT" and "which method to use" largely unanswered, especially in visual recognition. In this paper, we conduct a unifying empirical study of representative PEFT methods with Vision Transformers. We systematically tune their hyperparameters to fairly compare their accuracy on downstream tasks. Our study offers a practical user guide and unveils several new insights. First, if tuned carefully, different PEFT methods achieve similar accuracy in the low-shot benchmark VTAB-1K. This includes simple approaches like FT the bias terms that were reported inferior. Second, despite similar accuracy, we find that PEFT methods make different mistakes and high-confidence predictions, likely due to their different inductive biases. Such an inconsistency (or complementarity) opens up the opportunity for ensemble methods, and we make preliminary attempts at this. Third, going beyond the commonly used low-shot tasks, we find that PEFT is also useful in many-shot regimes, achieving comparable or better accuracy than full FT while using significantly fewer parameters. Lastly, we investigate PEFT's ability to preserve a pre-trained model's robustness to distribution shifts (e.g., CLIP). Perhaps not surprisingly, PEFT approaches outperform full FT alone. However, with weight-space ensembles, full FT can better balance target distribution and distribution shift performance, suggesting a future research direction for robust PEFT.

Quasi-periodic oscillations of GHz-band polarization in a black hole

Relativistic jets from accreting black holes (BHs) radiate non-thermal emission which is highly variable in different time scales. Magnetic fields anchored to a rotating BH or accretion disc accelerate and collimate jets of the BH systems. Previous studies on black holes of different mass scales, including supermassive and stellar-mass black holes, only report flux quasi-periodic oscillations in radio, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray bands. No quasi-periodic variations in polarization have yet been detected in any black hole systems. Here, we report the first detection of GHz radio polarization oscillations in GRS 1915+105, which harbors a spinning stellar-mass BH with a relativistic jet. Our observations show that during the increasing phase of radio emission, linear polarization and flux exhibit similar oscillation periods of $\sim 17$ and $33$ seconds, and their variation patterns anti-correlate with each other. These rare, short-period oscillations in both polarization and flux would be important to understand instabilities and special dynamics in magnetized jets.

Federated Inverse Probability Treatment Weighting for Individual Treatment Effect Estimation

Individual treatment effect (ITE) estimation is to evaluate the causal effects of treatment strategies on some important outcomes, which is a crucial problem in healthcare. Most existing ITE estimation methods are designed for centralized settings. However, in real-world clinical scenarios, the raw data are usually not shareable among hospitals due to the potential privacy and security risks, which makes the methods not applicable. In this work, we study the ITE estimation task in a federated setting, which allows us to harness the decentralized data from multiple hospitals. Due to the unavoidable confounding bias in the collected data, a model directly learned from it would be inaccurate. One well-known solution is Inverse Probability Treatment Weighting (IPTW), which uses the conditional probability of treatment given the covariates to re-weight each training example. Applying IPTW in a federated setting, however, is non-trivial. We found that even with a well-estimated conditional probability, the local model training step using each hospital's data alone would still suffer from confounding bias. To address this, we propose FED-IPTW, a novel algorithm to extend IPTW into a federated setting that enforces both global (over all the data) and local (within each hospital) decorrelation between covariates and treatments. We validated our approach on the task of comparing the treatment effects of mechanical ventilation on improving survival probability for patients with breadth difficulties in the intensive care unit (ICU). We conducted experiments on both synthetic and real-world eICU datasets and the results show that FED-IPTW outperform state-of-the-art methods on all the metrics on factual prediction and ITE estimation tasks, paving the way for personalized treatment strategy design in mechanical ventilation usage.

Global well-posedness of 3-D density-dependent incompressible MHD equations with variable resistivity

In this paper, we investigate the global existence of weak solutions to 3-D inhomogeneous incompressible MHD equations with variable viscosity and resistivity, which is sufficiently close to $1$ in $L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^3),$ provided that the initial density is bounded from above and below by positive constants, and both the initial velocity and magnetic field are small enough in the critical space $\dot{H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(\mathbb{R}^3).$ Furthermore, if we assume in addition that the kinematic viscosity equals $1,$ and both the initial velocity and magnetic field belong to $\dot{B}^{\frac{1}{2}}_{2,1}(\mathbb{R}^3),$ we can also prove the uniqueness of such solution.

CardioAI: A Multimodal AI-based System to Support Symptom Monitoring and Risk Detection of Cancer Treatment-Induced Cardiotoxicity

Despite recent advances in cancer treatments that prolong patients' lives, treatment-induced cardiotoxicity remains one severe side effect. The clinical decision-making of cardiotoxicity is challenging, as non-clinical symptoms can be missed until life-threatening events occur at a later stage, and clinicians already have a high workload centered on the treatment, not the side effects. Our project starts with a participatory design study with 11 clinicians to understand their practices and needs; then we build a multimodal AI system, CardioAI, that integrates wearables and LLM-powered voice assistants to monitor multimodal non-clinical symptoms. Also, the system includes an explainable risk prediction module that can generate cardiotoxicity risk scores and summaries as explanations to support clinicians' decision-making. We conducted a heuristic evaluation with four clinical experts and found that they all believe CardioAI integrates well into their workflow, reduces their information overload, and enables them to make more informed decisions.

ResiComp: Loss-Resilient Image Compression via Dual-Functional Masked Visual Token Modeling

Recent advancements in neural image codecs (NICs) are of significant compression performance, but limited attention has been paid to their error resilience. These resulting NICs tend to be sensitive to packet losses, which are prevalent in real-time communications. In this paper, we investigate how to elevate the resilience ability of NICs to combat packet losses. We propose ResiComp, a pioneering neural image compression framework with feature-domain packet loss concealment (PLC). Motivated by the inherent consistency between generation and compression, we advocate merging the tasks of entropy modeling and PLC into a unified framework focused on latent space context modeling. To this end, we take inspiration from the impressive generative capabilities of large language models (LLMs), particularly the recent advances of masked visual token modeling (MVTM). During training, we integrate MVTM to mirror the effects of packet loss, enabling a dual-functional Transformer to restore the masked latents by predicting their missing values and conditional probability mass functions. Our ResiComp jointly optimizes compression efficiency and loss resilience. Moreover, ResiComp provides flexible coding modes, allowing for explicitly adjusting the efficiency-resilience trade-off in response to varying Internet or wireless network conditions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ResiComp can significantly enhance the NIC's resilience against packet losses, while exhibits a worthy trade-off between compression efficiency and packet loss resilience.

Continual Learning-Aided Super-Resolution Scheme for Channel Reconstruction and Generalization in OFDM Systems

Channel reconstruction and generalization capability are of equal importance for developing channel estimation schemes within deep learning (DL) framework. In this paper, we exploit a novel DL-based scheme for efficient OFDM channel estimation where the neural networks for channel reconstruction and generalization are respectively designed. For the former, we propose a dual-attention-aided super-resolution neural network (DA-SRNN) to map the channels at pilot positions to the whole time-frequency channels. Specifically, the channel-spatial attention mechanism is first introduced to sequentially infer attention maps along two separate dimensions corresponding to two types of underlying channel correlations, and then the lightweight SR module is developed for efficient channel reconstruction. For the latter, we introduce continual learning (CL)-aided training strategies to make the neural network adapt to different channel distributions. Specifically, the elastic weight consolidation (EWC) is introduced as the regularization term in regard to loss function of channel reconstruction, which can constrain the direction and space of updating the important weights of neural networks among different channel distributions. Meanwhile, the corresponding training process is provided in detail. By evaluating under 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) channel models, numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed channel estimation scheme with significantly improved channel reconstruction and generalization performance over counterparts.

NeRFCom: Feature Transform Coding Meets Neural Radiance Field for Free-View 3D Scene Semantic Transmission

We introduce NeRFCom, a novel communication system designed for end-to-end 3D scene transmission. Compared to traditional systems relying on handcrafted NeRF semantic feature decomposition for compression and well-adaptive channel coding for transmission error correction, our NeRFCom employs a nonlinear transform and learned probabilistic models, enabling flexible variable-rate joint source-channel coding and efficient bandwidth allocation aligned with the NeRF semantic feature's different contribution to the 3D scene synthesis fidelity. Experimental results demonstrate that NeRFCom achieves free-view 3D scene efficient transmission while maintaining robustness under adverse channel conditions.

CLLoRA: An Approach to Measure the Effects of the Context Length for LLM Fine-Tuning

Large language model fine-tuning has been identified as an efficient approach to applying the pre-trained Large language models to other domains. To guarantee data privacy for different data owners, models are often fine-tuned in federated learning environments across different data owners, which often involve data heterogeneity issues and affect the fine-tuning performance. In addition, the length of the context for the training data has been identified as a major factor that affects the LLM's model performance. To efficiently measure how the context length affects the LLM's model performance in heterogeneous federated learning environments, we propose CLLoRA. CLLoRA utilizes the parameter-efficient fine-tuning approach LoRA based on different kinds of LLMs with varying sizes as the fine-tuning approach to investigate whether the quality and length of contexts can serve as standards for measuring non-IID context. The findings indicate that an imbalance in context quality not only affects local training on clients but also impacts the global model's performance. However, context length has a minimal effect on local training but a more significant influence on the global model. These results provide insights into how context quality and length affect the model performance for LLM fine-tuning in federated learning environments.

Efficient Semantic-aware Encryption for Secure Communications in Intelligent Connected Vehicles

Semantic communication (SemCom) significantly improves inter-vehicle interactions in intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) within limited wireless spectrum. However, the open nature of wireless communications introduces eavesdropping risks. To mitigate this, we propose the Efficient Semantic-aware Encryption (ESAE) mechanism, integrating cryptography into SemCom to secure semantic transmission without complex key management. ESAE leverages semantic reciprocity between source and reconstructed information from past communications to independently generate session keys at both ends, reducing key transmission costs and associated security risks. Additionally, ESAE introduces a semantic-aware key pre-processing method (SA-KP) using the YOLO-v10 model to extract consistent semantics from bit-level diverse yet semantically identical content, ensuring key consistency. Experimental results validate ESAE's effectiveness and feasibility under various wireless conditions, with key performance factors discussed.

Rethinking Generative Semantic Communication for Multi-User Systems with Large Language Models

The surge in connected devices in 6G with typical complex tasks requiring multi-user cooperation, such as smart agriculture and smart cities, poses significant challenges to unsustainable traditional communication. Fortunately, the booming artificial intelligence technology and the growing computational power of devices offer a promising 6G enabler: semantic communication (SemCom). However, existing deep learning-based SemCom paradigms struggle to extend to multi-user scenarios due to its increasing model size with the growing number of users and its limited compatibility with complex communication environments. Consequently, to truly empower 6G networks with this critical technology, this article rethinks generative SemCom for multi-user system and proposes a novel framework called ``M-GSC" with the large language model (LLM) as the shared knowledge base (SKB). The LLM-based SKB plays three critical roles, that is, complex task decomposition, semantic representation specification, and semantic translation and mapping, for complex tasks, spawning a series of benefits such as semantic encoding standardization and semantic decoding personalization. Meanwhile, to enhance the performance of M-GSC framework, we highlight three optimization strategies unique to this framework: extending the LLM-based SKB into a multi-agent LLM system, offloading semantic encoding and decoding, and managing communication and computational resources. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the preliminary validation on the effectiveness of the M-GSC framework in terms of efficient decoding offloading.

WatchGuardian: Enabling User-Defined Personalized Just-in-Time Intervention on Smartwatch

While just-in-time interventions (JITIs) have effectively targeted common health behaviors, individuals often have unique needs to intervene in personal undesirable actions that can negatively affect physical, mental, and social well-being. We present WatchGuardian, a smartwatch-based JITI system that empowers users to define custom interventions for these personal actions with a small number of samples. For the model to detect new actions based on limited new data samples, we developed a few-shot learning pipeline that finetuned a pre-trained inertial measurement unit (IMU) model on public hand-gesture datasets. We then designed a data augmentation and synthesis process to train additional classification layers for customization. Our offline evaluation with 26 participants showed that with three, five, and ten examples, our approach achieved an average accuracy of 76.8%, 84.7%, and 87.7%, and an F1 score of 74.8%, 84.2%, and 87.2% We then conducted a four-hour intervention study to compare WatchGuardian against a rule-based intervention. Our results demonstrated that our system led to a significant reduction by 64.0 +- 22.6% in undesirable actions, substantially outperforming the baseline by 29.0%. Our findings underscore the effectiveness of a customizable, AI-driven JITI system for individuals in need of behavioral intervention in personal undesirable actions. We envision that our work can inspire broader applications of user-defined personalized intervention with advanced AI solutions.
