The wavefunction reconstruction effects in calculation of DM-induced electronic transition in semiconductor targets

The physics of the electronic excitation in semiconductors induced by sub-GeV dark matter (DM) have been extensively discussed in literature, under the framework of the standard plane wave (PW) and pseudopotential calculation scheme. In this paper, we investigate the implication of the all-electron (AE) reconstruction on estimation of the DM-induced electronic transition event rates. As a benchmark study, we first calculate the wavefunctions in silicon and germanium bulk crystals based on both the AE and pseudo (PS) schemes within the projector augmented wave (PAW) framework, and then make comparisons between the calculated excitation event rates obtained from these two approaches. It turns out that in process where large momentum transfer is kinetically allowed, the two calculated event rates can differ by a factor of a few. Such discrepancies are found to stem from the high-momentum components neglected in the PS scheme. It is thus implied that the correction from the AE wavefunction in the core region is necessary for an accurate estimate of the DM-induced transition event rate in semiconductors.

Heat kernel approach for confined quantum gas

In this paper, based on the heat kernel technique, we calculate equations of state and thermodynamic quantities for ideal quantum gases in confined space with external potential. Concretely, we provide expressions for equations of state and thermodynamic quantities by means of heat kernel coefficients for ideal quantum gases. Especially, using an analytic continuation treatment, we discuss the application of the heat kernel technique to Fermi gases in which the expansion diverges when the fugacity $z>1$. In order to calculate the modification of heat kernel coefficients caused by external potentials, we suggest an approach for calculating the expansion of the global heat kernel of the operator $-Δ+U\left( x\right) $ based on an approximate method of the calculation of spectrum in quantum mechanics. At last, we discuss the properties of quantum gases under the condition of weak and complete degeneration, respectively.

Raman spectrum of 1T'-WTe2 under tensile strain: A first-principles prediction

Monolayer WTe2 attracts rapidly growing interests for its large-gap quantum spin Hall effect, which enables promising apllications in flexible logic devices. Due to one-dimensional W-W chains,1T'-WTe2 exhibits unique anisotropic structure and promising properties, which can be modified by simply applying strains. Based on the first-principles simulations, we show that phonon branch undergoes soft down to negative frequency at special q points under different critical strains, i.e., epsilon_a = 11.55 percent along a-axis (with W-W chains) direction, epsilon_b = 7.0 percent along b-axis direction and epsilon_ab = 8.44 percent along biaxial direction. Before each critical strain, the Raman-shift of A1_g, A3_g, and A4_g modes, corresponding to the main peaks in Raman spectra of 1T'-WTe2 , shows anisotropic response to uniaxial strain but most sensitive to biaxial strain. Interestingly, we find that the frequency shift of A3_g mode show parabolic characters of strained 1T'-WTe2, then we split it into two parts and it shows a Raman-shift transition at about 5 percent strains. While for the A1_g and A4_g modes, the frequencies change linearly. Through careful structure and vibration analysis, we try to explain these Raman irregularity in strained 1T'-WTe2.

Enhancing Interpretability of Black-box Soft-margin SVM by Integrating Data-based Priors

The lack of interpretability often makes black-box models difficult to be applied to many practical domains. For this reason, the current work, from the black-box model input port, proposes to incorporate data-based prior information into the black-box soft-margin SVM model to enhance its interpretability. The concept and incorporation mechanism of data-based prior information are successively developed, based on which the interpretable or partly interpretable SVM optimization model is designed and then solved through handily rewriting the optimization problem as a nonlinear quadratic programming problem. An algorithm for mining data-based linear prior information from data set is also proposed, which generates a linear expression with respect to two appropriate inputs identified from all inputs of system. At last, the proposed interpretability enhancement strategy is applied to eight benchmark examples for effectiveness exhibition.

Robust Vector Perturbation Precoding Design for MIMO Broadcast Channel

We consider the vector perturbation (VP) precoder design for multiuser multiple-input single output (MU-MISO) broadcast channel systems which is robust to power scaling factor errors. VP precoding has so far been developed and analyzed under the assumption that receivers could have known the power scaling factor in advance of tranmission perfectly, which is hard to obtain due to the large dynamic range and limited feedforward. However, as demonstrated in our results the performance of VP precoding is quite sensitive to the accuracy of power scaling factor and always encounter an error floor at mid to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. Motivated by such observations, we propose a robust VP precoder based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Simulation results show that, the robust VP precoder outperforms conventional VP precoding designs, as less sensitive to power scaling factor errors.

On the controllability of the Navier-Stokes equation in a rectangle, with a little help of a distributed phantom force

This note echoes the talk given by the second author during the Journées EDP 2018 in Obernai. Its aim is to provide an overview and a sketch of proof of the result obtained by the authors, concerning the controllability of the Navier-Stokes equation. We refer the interested readers to the original paper for the full technical details of the proof, which will be omitted here, to focus on the main underlying ideas.

Self-energy effects and energy band theory for warm dense matter

The energy band structures caused by self-energy shifting that results in bound energy levels broadening and merging in warm dense aluminum and beryllium are observed. An energy band theory for warm dense matter (WDM) is proposed and a new code based on the energy band theory is developed to improve the traditional density functional method. Massive data of the equation of state and transport coefficients for WDM in medium and low Z have been simulated. The transition from fully degenerate to partially degenerate (related to WDM) and finally to non-degenerate state is investigated using the Lorenz number varying with the degeneracy parameter, and the lower and upper parameter boundaries for WDM are achieved. It is shown that the pressure ionization results in the Wiedemann-Franz law no longer available for WDM.

Global strong solutions to 3-D Navier-Stokes system with strong dissipation in one direction

We consider three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation $(NS)$ with different viscous coefficient in the vertical and horizontal variables. In particular, when one of these viscous coefficients is large enough compared to the initial data, we prove the global well-posedness of this system. In fact, we obtain the existence of a global strong solution to $(NS)$ when the initial data verify an anisotropic smallness condition which takes into account the different roles of the horizontal and vertical viscosity.

Global solutions of $3$-D Navier-Stokes system with small unidirectional derivative

Given initial data $u_0=(u_0^\h,u_0^3)\in H^{-\d,0}\cap H^{\f12}(\R^3)$ with both~$\uh_0$ and~$\nabla_{\rm h}\uh_0$ belonging to ~$L^2(\R^3)\cap L^\infty(\R_\v;L^2(\R^2_\h))$ and $u_0^\h\in L^\infty(\R_\v, H^{-\d}(\R^2_\h))$ for some $δ\in ]0,1[,$ if in addition $\pa_3u_0$ belongs to $H^{-\frac12,0}\cap H^{\frac12,0}(\R^3),$ we prove that the classical $3$-D Navier-Stokes system has a unique global Fujita-Kato solution provided that $\|\pa_3u_0\|_{H^{-\f12,0}}$ is sufficiently small compared to a constant which depends only on the norms of the initial data. In particular, this result provides some classes of large initial data which generate unique global solutions to 3-D Navier-Stokes system.

Global well-posedness of 3-D anisotropic Navier-Stokes system with large vertical viscous coefficient

In this paper, we first prove the global well-posedness of 3-D anisotropic Navier-Stokes system provided that the vertical viscous coefficient of the system is sufficiently large compared to some critical norm of the initial data. Then we shall construct a family of initial data, $u_{0,ν},$ which vary fast enough in the vertical variable and which are not small in the space, $BMO^{-1}.$ Yet $u_{0,ν}$ generates a unique global solution to the classical 3-D Navier-Stokes system provided that $ν$ is sufficiently large.

Existence of incompressible and immiscible flows in critical function spaces on bounded domains

We study global existence and uniqueness of solutions to instationary inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations on bounded domains of $\R^n, n\geq 3$, with initial velocity in $B^0_{q,\infty}(\Om)$, $q\geq n$, and piecewise constant initial density. \par To this end, first, existence for momentum equations with prescribed density is obtained based on maximal $L^\infty_\ga$-regularity of the Stokes operator in little Nicolskii space $b^{s}_{q,\infty}(\Om)$, $s\in\R$, exploited in \cite{RiZh14} and existence for divergence problem in $b^{-s}_{q,\infty}(\Om)$, $s>0$. Then, we obtain an existence result for transport equations in the space of pointwise multipliers for $b^{-s}_{q,\infty}(\Om)$, $s>0$. Finally, the existence of the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations is proved via an iterate scheme while the proof of uniqueness is done via a Lagrangian approach based on the prior results on momentum equations and transport equation.

Re-estimation of thermal contact resistance considering near-field thermal radiation effect

Thermal contact has always been a hot issue in many engineering fields and thermal contact resistance (TCR) is one of the important indicators weighing the heat transfer efficiency among the interfaces. In this paper, the contact heat transfer of conforming rough surfaces is theoretically re-estimated considering both the heat transfer from contact and non-contact regions. The fluctuational electrodynamics (an ab initio calculation) is adopted to calculate the thermal radiation. The contribution of contact regions is estimated by the CMY TCR model and further studied by modelling specific surfaces with corresponding surface roughness power spectrum (PSD). Several tests are presented where aluminum and amorphous alumina are mainly used in the simulations. Studies showed that there exists a significant synergy between the thermal conduction and near-field thermal radiation at the interface in a certain range of effective roughness. When the effective roughness is near to the scales of submicron, the near-field radiation effect should not be neglected even at room temperature.

Trajectory-driven Influential Billboard Placement

In this paper we propose and study the problem of trajectory-driven influential billboard placement: given a set of billboards $U$ (each with a location and a cost), a database of trajectories $\mathcal{T}$ and a budget $L$, find a set of billboards within the budget to influence the largest number of trajectories. One core challenge is to identify and reduce the overlap of the influence from different billboards to the same trajectories, while keeping the budget constraint into consideration. We show that this problem is NP-hard and present an enumeration based algorithm with $(1-1/e)$ approximation ratio. However, the enumeration should be very costly when $|U|$ is large. By exploiting the locality property of billboards' influence, we propose a partition-based framework PartSel. PartSel partitions $U$ into a set of small clusters, computes the locally influential billboards for each cluster, and merges them to generate the global solution. Since the local solutions can be obtained much more efficient than the global one, PartSel should reduce the computation cost greatly; meanwhile it achieves a non-trivial approximation ratio guarantee. Then we propose a LazyProbe method to further prune billboards with low marginal influence, while achieving the same approximation ratio as PartSel. Experiments on real datasets verify the efficiency and effectiveness of our methods.

Determinstic and stochastic 2d Navier-Stokes equations with anisotropic viscosity

In this paper, we investigate both deterministic and stochastic 2D Navier Stokes equations with anisotropic viscosity. For the deterministic case, we prove the global well-posedness of the system with initial data in the anisotropic Sobolev space $\tilde{H}^{0,1}.$ For the stochastic case, we obtain existence of the martingale solutions and pathwise uniqueness of the solutions, which imply existence of the probabilistically strong solution to this system by the Yamada-Watanabe Theorem.

Some remarks about the possible blow-up for the Navier-Stokes equations

In this work we investigate the question of preventing the three-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations from developing singularities, by controlling one component of the velocity field only, in space-time scale invariant norms. In particular we prove that it is not possible for one component of the velocity field to tend to~$0$ too fast near blow up. We also introduce a space "almost" invariant under the action of the scaling such that if one component of the velocity field measured in this space remains small enough, then there is no blow up.

Global Fujita-Kato solution of 3-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system

In this paper, we shall prove the global existence of weak solutions to 3D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system $({\rm INS})$ with initial density in the bounded function space and having a positive lower bound and with initial velocity being sufficiently small in the critical Besov space, $\dot B^{\f12}_{2,1}.$ This result corresponds to the Fujita-Kato solutions of the classical Navier-Stokes system. The same idea can be used to prove the global existence of weak solutions in the \emph{critical functional framework} to $({\rm INS})$ with one component of the initial velocity being large and can also be applied to provide a lower bound for the lifespan of smooth enough solutions of $({\rm INS}).$

In-flight energy calibration of the space-borne Compton polarimeter POLAR

POLAR is a compact wide-field space-borne detector for precise measurements of the linear polarisation of hard X-rays emitted by transient sources in the energy range from 50 keV to 500 keV. It consists of a 40$\times$40 array of plastic scintillator bars used as a detection material. The bars are grouped in 25 detector modules. The energy range sensitivity of POLAR is optimized to match with the prompt emission photons from the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Polarization measurements of the prompt emission would probe source geometries, emission mechanisms and magnetic structures in GRB jets. The instrument can also detect hard X-rays from solar flares and be used for precise measurement of their polarisation. POLAR was launched into a low Earth orbit on-board the Chinese space-lab TG-2 on September 15th, 2016. To achieve high accuracies in polarisation measurements it is essential to assure both before and during the flight a precise energy calibration. Such calibrations are performed with four low activity $^{22}$Na radioactive sources placed inside the instrument. Energy conversion factors are related to Compton edge positions from the collinear annihilation photons from the sources. This paper presents main principles of the in-flight calibration, describes studies of the method based on Monte Carlo simulations and its laboratory verification and finally provides some observation results based on the in-flight data analysis.

Effective Capacity Analysis in Ultra-Dense Wireless Networks with Random Interference

Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) provide a promising paradigm to cope with exponentially increasing mobile traffic. However, little work has to date considered unsaturated traffic with quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. This paper presents a new cross-layer analytical model to capture the unsaturated traffic of a UDN in the presence of QoS requirements. The effective capacity (EC) of the UDN is derived, taking into account small-scale channel fading and possible interference. Key properties of the EC are revealed. The amount of traffic impacts effective capacity of the UDN due to the sophisticated interactions among small base stations operating in the same frequency. The maximization of total effective capacity is formulated as a non-cooperative game in the paper. The best-response function is derived, iteratively searching the Nash equilibrium point. System simulation results indicate that our proposed model is accurate. The simulations also show the maximum allowed arrival rate with the QoS guarantee, compared with the full interference model.
