Energy-Efficient Transmission of Hybrid Array with Non-Ideal Power Amplifiers and Circuitry

This paper presents a new approach to efficiently maximizing the energy efficiency (EE) of hybrid arrays under a practical setting of non-ideal power amplifiers (PAs) and non-negligible circuit power, where coherent and non-coherent beamforming are considered. As a key contribution, we reveal that a bursty transmission mode can be energy-efficient to achieve steady transmissions of a data stream under the practical setting. This is distinctively different from existing studies under ideal circuits and PAs, where continuous transmissions are the most energy-efficient. Another important contribution is that the optimal transmit duration and powers are identified to balance energy consumptions in the non-ideal circuits and PAs, and maximize the EE. This is achieved by establishing the most energy-efficient structure of transmit powers, given a transmit duration, and correspondingly partitioning the non-convex feasible region of the transmit duration into segments with self-contained convexity or concavity. Evident from simulations, significant EE gains of the proposed approach are demonstrated through comparisons with the state of the art, and the superiority of the bursty transmission mode is confirmed especially under low data rate demands.

Stochastic Control of Computation Offloading to a Helper with a Dynamically Loaded CPU

Due to densification of wireless networks, there exist abundance of idling computation resources at edge devices. These resources can be scavenged by offloading heavy computation tasks from small IoT devices in proximity, thereby overcoming their limitations and lengthening their battery lives. However, unlike dedicated servers, the spare resources offered by edge helpers are random and intermittent. Thus, it is essential for a user to intelligently control the amounts of data for offloading and local computing so as to ensure a computation task can be finished in time consuming minimum energy. In this paper, we design energy-efficient control policies in a computation offloading system with a random channel and a helper with a dynamically loaded CPU. Specifically, the policy adopted by the helper aims at determining the sizes of offloaded and locally-computed data for a given task in different slots such that the total energy consumption for transmission and local CPU is minimized under a task-deadline constraint. As the result, the polices endow an offloading user robustness against channel-and-helper randomness besides balancing offloading and local computing. By modeling the channel and helper-CPU as Markov chains, the problem of offloading control is converted into a Markov-decision process. Though dynamic programming (DP) for numerically solving the problem does not yield the optimal policies in closed form, we leverage the procedure to quantify the optimal policy structure and apply the result to design optimal or sub-optimal policies. For different cases ranging from zero to large buffers, the low-complexity of the policies overcomes the "curse-of-dimensionality" in DP arising from joint consideration of channel, helper CPU and buffer states.

Optimal Scheduling across Heterogeneous Air Interfaces of LTE/WiFi Aggregation

LTE/WiFi Aggregation (LWA) provides a promising approach to relieve data traffic congestion in licensed bands by leveraging unlicensed bands. Critical challenges arise from provisioning quality-of-service (QoS) through heterogenous interfaces of licensed and unlicensed bands. In this paper, we minimize the required licensed spectrum without degrading the QoS in the presence of multiple users. Specifically, the aggregated effective capacity of LWA is firstly derived by developing a new semi-Markov model. Multi-band resource allocation with the QoS guarantee between the licensed and unlicensed bands is formulated to minimize the licensed bandwidth, convexified by exploiting Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) and difference of two convex functions (DC) programming, and solved efficiently with a new iterative algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate significant performance gain of the proposed approach over heuristic alternatives.

Critical one component anisotropic regularity for 3-D Navier-Stokes system

Let us consider an initial data $v_0$ for the classical 3D Navier-Stokes equation with vorticity belonging to $L^{\frac 32}\cap L^2$. We prove that if the solution associated with $v_0$ blows up at a finite time $T^\star$, then for any $p\in]4,\infty[,~q_1\in[1,2[,~μ>0, ~q_2\in\bigl[2,\bigl(1/p+μ\bigr)^{-1}\bigr[,~κ\in ]1,\infty[$, and any unit vector $e$, the $L^p$ estimate in time of $\bigl\|(v(t)|e)_{\mathbb{R}^3}\bigr\|_{L^{\frac{3p}{p-2}}}^p +\bigl\|(v(t)|e)_{\mathbb{R}^3}\bigr\|^p_{ \bigl(\dot{B}^{μ+\frac2p+\frac2{q_1}-1}_{q_1,κ}\bigr)_{\rm h} \bigl(\dot{B}^{\frac1{q_2}-μ}_{q_2,κ}\bigr)_{\rm v}}$ blows up at $T^\star$.

Striated Regularity of 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with variable viscosity

In this paper, we investigate the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to 2D incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with viscous coefficient depending on the density and with initial density being discontinuous across some smooth interface. Compared with the previous results for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity, the main difficulty here lies in the fact that the $L^1$ in time Lipschitz estimate of the velocity field can not be obtained by energy method (see \cite{DM17,LZ1, LZ2} for instance). Motivated by the key idea of Chemin to solve 2-D vortex patch of ideal fluid (\cite{Chemin91, Chemin93}), namely, striated regularity can help to get the $L^\infty$ boundedness of the double Riesz transform, we derive the {\it a priori} $L^1$ in time Lipschitz estimate of the velocity field under the assumption that the viscous coefficient is close enough to a positive constant in the bounded function space. As an application, we shall prove the propagation of $H^3$ regularity of the interface between fluids with different densities.

Preserving Reliability to Heterogeneous Ultra-Dense Distributed Networks in Unlicensed Spectrum

This article investigates the prominent dilemma between capacity and reliability in heterogeneous ultra-dense distributed networks, and advocates a new measure of effective capacity to quantify the maximum sustainable data rate of a link while preserving the quality-of-service (QoS) of the link in such networks. Recent breakthroughs are brought forth in developing the theory of the effective capacity in heterogeneous ultra-dense distributed networks. Potential applications of the effective capacity are demonstrated on the admission control, power control and resource allocation of such networks, with substantial gains revealed over existing technologies. This new measure is of particular interest to ultra-dense deployment of the emerging fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks in the unlicensed spectrum, leveraging the capacity gain brought by the use of the unlicensed band and the stringent reliability sustained by 5G in future heterogeneous network environments.

Mapping electronic states of dual-parallel and symmetric zigzag grain boundaries of graphene on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

The grain boundaries (GBs) of a graphene surface were extensively studied because GBs with specific defect configurations result in the formation of new curved structures, which can be treated as new carbon allotropes. We studied the structures and electronic spectra of two periodic GBs in graphene on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S). Our results demonstrated that a GB consisting of dual parallel periodic dislocation cores of pentagonal-heptagonal (5-7) carbon rings gives rise to an enhanced localized state at 0.45 eV above the Dirac point in graphene surfaces, which is attributed to van Hove singularities (VHSs). Moreover, the energy positions of the localized states are varied between 0.40 and 0.47 eV depending on the site and eventually decayed to 0.36 eV. The variation of the energy positions is induced by two parallel GBs because of the higher electron density at the GB as a defect center and the lower electron away from the GB. Another periodic GB with a symmetric zigzag structural feature induced VHSs at -0.038 and 0.12 eV near the Fermi level. Moreover, intervalley scattering was observed on both these GBs. This means that carrier concentration and thus, the conductance around the periodic GBs can be significantly enhanced by localized density of states. This finding suggests that graphene with a properly embedded ordered GB is promising for improving the performance of graphene-based electronic devices.

Tunable spin states in two-dimensional magnet CrI3

The recent discovery of ferromagnetic single-layer CrI3 creates ample opportunities for studying fundamental properties of atomically-thin magnets. By using first-principles calculations and model analysis, we show that a lateral strain and/or charge doping can have unexpected effects on the magnetic properties of CrI3. In particular, strain tunes the magnetic order and anisotropy: (1) a compressive strain leads to a phase transition from a ferromagnetic insulator to an antiferromagnetic insulator, while (2) a tensile strain can flip the magnetic orientation from off-plane to in-plane. Interestingly, we find that the phase boundary for the first transition is insensitive to charge doping, whereas that of the second one can be significantly modulated by electron doping.

Topological crystalline antiferromagnetic state in tetragonal FeS

Integration between magnetism and topology is an exotic phenomenon in condensed-matter physics. Here, we propose an exotic phase named topological crystalline antiferromagnetic state, in which antiferromagnetism intrinsically integrates with nontrivial topology, and we suggest such a state can be realized in tetragonal FeS. A combination of first-principles calculations and symmetry analyses shows that the topological crystalline antiferromagnetic state arises from band reconstruction induced by pair checker-board antiferromagnetic order together with band-gap opening induced by intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in tetragonal FeS. The topological crystalline antiferromagnetic state is protected by the product of fractional translation symmetry, mirror symmetry, and time-reversal symmetry, and present some unique features. In contrast to strong topological insulators, the topological robustness is surface-dependent. These findings indicate that non-trivial topological states could emerge in pure antiferromagnetic materials, which sheds new light on potential applications of topological properties in fast-developing antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Secrecy-Optimized Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Communication Underlaying Heterogeneous Networks

Device-to-device (D2D) communications recently have attracted much attention for its potential capability to improve spectral efficiency underlaying the existing heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Due to no sophisticated control, D2D user equipments (DUEs) themselves cannot resist eavesdropping or security attacks. It is urgent to maximize the secure capacity for both cellular users and DUEs. This paper formulates the radio resource allocation problem to maximize the secure capacity of DUEs for the D2D communication underlaying HetNets which consist of high power nodes and low power nodes. The optimization objective function with transmit bit rate and power constraints, which is non-convex and hard to be directly derived, is firstly transformed into matrix form. Then the equivalent convex form of the optimization problem is derived according to the Perron-Frobenius theory. A heuristic iterative algorithm based on the proximal theory is proposed to solve this equivalent convex problem through evaluating the proximal operator of Lagrange function. Numerical results show that the proposed radio resource allocation solution significantly improves the secure capacity with a fast convergence speed.

Fast Depth Imaging Denoising with the Temporal Correlation of Photons

This paper proposes a novel method to filter out the false alarm of LiDAR system by using the temporal correlation of target reflected photons. Because of the inevitable noise, which is due to background light and dark counts of the detector, the depth imaging of LiDAR system exists a large estimation error. Our method combines the Poisson statistical model with the different distribution feature of signal and noise in the time axis. Due to selecting a proper threshold, our method can effectively filter out the false alarm of system and use the ToFs of detected signal photons to rebuild the depth image of the scene. The experimental results reveal that by our method it can fast distinguish the distance between two close objects, which is confused due to the high background noise, and acquire the accurate depth image of the scene. Our method need not increase the complexity of the system and is useful in power-limited depth imaging.

Topological orbital superfluid with chiral d-wave order in a rotating optical lattice

Topological superfluid is an exotic state of quantum matter that possesses a nodeless superfluid gap in the bulk and Andreev edge modes at the boundary of a finite system. Here, we study a multi-orbital superfluid driven by attractive s-wave interaction in a rotating optical lattice. Interestingly, we find that the rotation induces the inter- orbital hybridization and drives the system into topological orbital superfluid in accordance with intrinsically chiral d-wave pairing characteristics. Thanks to the conservation of spin, the topological orbital superfluid supports four rather than two chiral Andreev edge modes at the boundary of the lattice. Moreover, we find that the intrinsic harmonic confining potential forms a circular spatial barrier which accumulates atoms and supports a mass current under injection of small angular momentum as external driving force. This feature provides an experimentally detectable phenomenon to verify the topological orbital superfluid with chiral d-wave order in a rotating optical lattice.

Extremely large magnetoresistance in a topological semimetal candidate pyrite PtBi2

While pyrite-type PtBi2 with face-centered cubic structure has been predicted to be a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal, experimental study on its physical properties remains absent. Here we report the angular-dependent magnetoresistance (MR) measurements of PtBi2 single-crystal under high magnetic fields. We observed extreme large unsaturated magnetoresistance (XMR) up to 11.2 million percent at T = 1.8 K in a magnetic field of 33 T, which surpasses the previously reported Dirac materials, such as WTe2, LaSb and NbP. The crystals exhibit an ultrahigh mobility and significant Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry's phase. Analysis of Hall resistivity indicates that the XMR can be ascribed to the nearly compensated electron and hole. Our experimental results associated with the ab initio calculations suggest that pyrite PtBi2 is a topological semimetal candidate which might provide a platform for exploring topological materials with XMR in noble metal alloys.

Adaptive Depth Imaging with Single-Photon Detectors

For active optical imaging, the use of single-photon detectors can greatly improve the detection sensitivity of the system. However, the traditional maximum-likelihood based imaging method needs a long acquisition time to capture clear three-dimensional (3D) image in low light-level. To tackle this problem, we present a novel imaging method for depth estimate, which can obtain the accurate 3D image in a short acquisition time. Our method combines the photon-count statistics with the temporal correlations of the reflected signal. According to the characteristics of the target surface, including the surface reflectivity, our method is capable of adaptively changing the dwell time in each pixel. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can fast obtain the accurate depth image despite the existence of strong background noise.

On the global well-posedness of 3-D axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes system with small swirl component

In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness of 3-D axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes system with initial data in the critical Lebesgue spaces. We also obtain the global well-posedness result with small initial data. Furthermore, with the initial swirl component of the velocity being sufficiently small in the almost critical spaces, we can still prove the global well-posedness of the system.

Large time behavior of solutions to 3-D MHD system with initial data near equilibrium

In \cite{ChCa}, Califano and Chiuderi conjectured that the energy of incompressible Magnetic hydrodynamical system is dissipated at a rate that is independent of the ohmic resistivity. The goal of this paper is to mathematically justify this conjecture in three space dimension provided that the initial magnetic field and velocity is a small perturbation of the equilibrium state $(e_3,0).$ In particular, we prove that for such data, 3-D incompressible MHD system without magnetic diffusion has a unique global solution. Furthermore, the velocity field and the difference between the magnetic field and $e_3$ decay to zero in both $L^\infty$ and $L^2$ norms with explicit rates. We point out that the decay rate in the $L^2$ norm is optimal in sense that this rate coincides with that of the linear system. The main idea of the proof is to exploit H$\ddot{o}$rmander's version of Nash-Moser iteration scheme, which is very much motivated by the seminar papers \cite{Kl80, Kl82, Kl84} by Klainerman on the long time behavior to the evolution equations.

Electronic and magnetic properties of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ : A first-principles study

The atomic structures, electronic band structures and magnetic properties of monolayer FeSe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ of different configurations have been systematically investigated via first-principles calculations with the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Three different antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders, including checkerboard order, collinear order and pair-checkerboard order, as well as paramagnetic state have been explored. In monolayer FeSe, collinear AFM order is found to be the most stable order, in accordance with previous investigations. Substituting half Se atoms with Te atoms, the pair-checkerboard AFM order is the ground-state magnetic order in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$. Both AFM-ordered FeSe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ have Dirac-cone-like band structures. SOC has a great influence on the band structures at the Dirac cone. The direction of the magnetic moments (in-plane or out-of-plane) directly determines whether the Dirac cone could be opened by SOC, and the gap values also relate to the specific magnetic structure. Although SOC is stronger in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, the SOC-induced band gaps are either only slightly enlarged or even much shrunk compared with those gaps in FeSe. Due to the symmetry breaking brought by Te-substitution, the band structures of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ have a new feature of combined Rashba-Dresselhaus splitting. Our results have provided a comprehensive study on the magnetic property of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, which may help to understand the relation between magnetism and the superconductivity in the high-Tc monolayer superconductor.

Monochromatic loose path partitions in k-uniform hypergraphs

A conjecture of Gyárfás and Sárközy says that in every $2$-coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^k$, there are two disjoint monochromatic loose paths of distinct colors such that they cover all but at most $k-2$ vertices. A weaker form of this conjecture with $2k-5$ uncovered vertices instead of $k-2$ is proved, thus the conjecture holds for $k=3$. The main result of this paper states that the conjecture is true for all $k\ge 3$.
