Unveiling pure-metal ejecta X-ray emission in supernova remnants through their radiative recombination continuum

Spectral analysis of X-ray emission from ejecta in supernova remnants (SNRs) is hampered by the low spectral resolution of CCD cameras, which creates a degeneracy between the best-fit values of abundances and emission measure. The combined contribution of shocked ambient medium and ejecta to the X-ray emission complicates the determination of the ejecta mass and chemical composition, leading to big uncertainties in mass estimates and it can introduce a bias in the comparison between the observed ejecta composition and the yields predicted by explosive nucleosynthesis. We explore the capabilities of present and future spectral instruments with the aim of identifying a spectral feature which may allow us to discriminate between metal-rich and pure-metal plasmas in X-ray spectra of SNRs. We studied the behavior of the most common X-ray emission processes of an optically thin plasma in the high-abundance regime. We investigated spectral features of bremsstrahlung, radiative recombination continua (RRC) and line emission, by exploring a wide range of chemical abundances, temperatures and ionization parameters. We synthesized X-ray spectra from a 3D hydrodynamic (HD) simulation of Cas A, by using the response matrix from the Chandra/ACIS-S CCD detector and that of the XRISM/Resolve X-ray calorimeter. We found that a bright RRC shows up when the plasma is made of pure-metal ejecta, and a high spectral resolution is needed to identify this ejecta signature. We verified the applicability of our novel diagnostic tool and we propose a promising target for the future detection of such spectral feature: the southeastern Fe-rich clump of Cas A. While there is no way to unambiguously reveal pure-metal ejecta emission with CCD detectors, X-ray calorimeters will be able to pinpoint the presence of pure-metal RRC and to recover correctly absolute mass and the chemical composition of the ejecta.

A Small-Scale Investigation of Molecular Emission toward the Tip of the Western Lobe of W50/SS433

We perform a molecular (CO and CN) line observation using IRAM 30m telescope toward two small regions near the western edge of supernova remnant (SNR) W50/SS433. CO observation reveals spatial correspondence of two molecular clumps at the local-standard-of-rest (LSR) velocity around +53 km s$^{-1}$ with multiwavelength local features of W50/SS433 system. One of the two clumps appears to be embedded in a void of diffuse radio and X-ray emission. Toward the two clumps, asymmetric broad line profiles of the $^{12}$CO lines are obtained, which provide kinematic evidence of the association between the clumps and the jet-related gas. The $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$/$J=1-0$ line ratios ($> 0.9$) and the kinetic temperatures ($\sim 30$ K) of the clumps are distinctively higher than all those of the clumps at other LSR velocities along the same line of sight, which may be physical signatures of the association. We show that the clump coincident with the void can survive the thermal heating if it is surrounded by hot gas, with an evaporation timescale much larger than the age of SNR W50. We also show that the thermal equilibrium in the high temperature clumps can be maintained by the heating of the penetrating environmental CRs. CN ($J=3/1-1/2$) line emission is detected in the two clumps, and the CN abundances derived are much higher than that in the interstellar molecular clouds (MCs) and that in the SNR-interacting MCs.

Local and non-local electron dynamics of Au/Fe/MgO(001) heterostructures analyzed by time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy

Employing femtosecond laser pulses in front and back side pumping of Au/Fe/MgO(001) combined with detection in two-photon photoelectron emission spectroscopy we analyze local relaxation dynamics of excited electrons in buried Fe, injection into Au across the Fe-Au interface, and electron transport across the Au layer at 0.6 to 2.0 eV above the Fermi energy. By analysis as a function of Au film thickness we obtain the electron lifetimes of bulk Au and Fe and distinguish the relaxation in the heterostructure's constituents. We also show that the excited electrons propagate through Au in a superdiffusive regime and conclude further that electron injection across the epitaxial interface proceeds ballistically by electron wavepacket propagation.

Simulation of Skin Stretching around the Forehead Wrinkles in Rhytidectomy

Objective: Skin stretching around the forehead wrinkles is an important method in rhytidectomy. Proper parameters are required to evaluate the surgical effect. In this paper, a simulation method was proposed to obtain the parameters. Methods: Three-dimensional point cloud data with a resolution of 50 μm were employed. First, a smooth supporting contour under the wrinkled forehead was generated via b-spline interpolation and extrapolation to constrain the deformation of the wrinkled zone. Then, based on the vector formed intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) algorithm, the simulation was implemented in Matlab for the deformation of wrinkled forehead skin in the stretching process. Finally, the stress distribution and the residual wrinkles of forehead skin were employed to evaluate the surgical effect. Results: Although the residual wrinkles are similar when forehead wrinkles are finitely stretched, their stress distribution changes greatly. This indicates that the stress distribution in the skin is effective to evaluate the surgical effect, and the forehead wrinkles are easily to be overstretched, which may lead to potential skin injuries. Conclusion: The simulation method can predict stress distribution and residual wrinkles after forehead wrinkle stretching surgery, which can be potentially used to control the surgical process and further reduce risks of skin injury.

Low-frequency radio absorption in Tycho's supernova remnant

Tycho's SNR is the remnant of the type Ia supernova explosion SN1572. In this work we present new low-frequency radio observations with the LOFAR Low-Band and High-Band Antennae, centred at 58 MHz and 143 MHz, and with an angular resolution of 41'' and 6'' respectively. We compare these maps to VLA maps at 327 MHz and 1420 MHz, and detect the effect of low-frequency absorption in some regions of the remnant due to the presence of free electrons along the line-of-sight. We investigate two origins for the low-frequency free-free absorption that we observe: external absorption from foreground, and internal absorption from Tycho's unshocked ejecta. The external absorption could be due to an ionised thin, diffuse cavity surrounding the SNR (although this cavity would need to be very thin to comply with the neutral fraction required to explain the remnant's optical lines), or it could be due to an over-ionised molecular shell in the vicinity of the remnant. We note that possible ionising sources are the X-ray emission from Tycho, its cosmic rays, or radiation from Tycho's progenitor. For the internal absorption, we are limited by our understanding of the spectral behaviour of the region at unabsorbed radio frequencies. However, the observations are suggestive of free-free absorption from unshocked ejecta inside Tycho's reverse shock.

Spatially resolved X-ray study of supernova remnants that host magnetars: Implication of their fossil field origin

Magnetars are regarded as the most magnetized neutron stars in the Universe. Aiming to unveil what kinds of stars and supernovae can create magnetars, we have performed a state-of-the-art spatially resolved spectroscopic X-ray study of the supernova remnants (SNRs) Kes 73, RCW 103, and N49, which host magnetars 1E 1841-045, 1E 161348-5055, and SGR 0526-66, respectively. The three SNRs are O- and Ne-enhanced and are evolving in the interstellar medium with densities of >1--2 cm$^{-3}$. The metal composition and dense environment indicate that the progenitor stars are not very massive. The progenitor masses of the three magnetars are constrained to be < 20 Msun (11--15 Msun for Kes 73, < 13 Msun for RCW 103, and ~13 --17 Msun for N49). Our study suggests that magnetars are not necessarily made from very massive stars, but originate from stars that span a large mass range. The explosion energies of the three SNRs range from $10^{50}$ erg to ~2$\times 10^{51}$ erg, further refuting that the SNRs are energized by rapidly rotating (millisecond) pulsars. We report that RCW 103 is produced by a weak supernova explosion with significant fallback, as such an explosion explains the low explosion energy (~$10^{50}$ erg), small observed metal masses ($M_{\rm O}\sim 4\times 10^{-2}$ Msun and $M_{\rm Ne}\sim 6\times 10^{-3}$ Msun), and sub-solar abundances of heavier elements such as Si and S. Our study supports the fossil field origin as an important channel to produce magnetars, given the normal mass range ($M_{\rm ZAMS} < 20$ Msun) of the progenitor stars, the low-to-normal explosion energy of the SNRs, and the fact that the fraction of SNRs hosting magnetars is consistent with the magnetic OB stars with high fields.

Doublon bottleneck in the ultrafast relaxation dynamics of hot electrons in 1T-TaS_2

Employing time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we analyze the relaxation dynamics of hot electrons in the charge density wave / Mott material 1T-TaS_2. At 1.2 eV above the Fermi level we observe a hot electron lifetime of 12 +- 5 fs in the metallic state and of 60 +- 10 fs in the broken symmetry ground state - a direct consequence of the reduced phase space for electron-electron scattering determined by the Mott gap. Boltzmann equation calculations which account for the interaction of hot electrons in a Bloch band with a doublon-holon excitation in the Mott state provide insight into the unoccupied electronic structure in the correlated state.

The environment of supernova remnant VRO 42.05.01 as probed with IRAM 30m molecular line observations

The environment of supernova remnants (SNRs) is a key factor in their evolution, particularly at later stages of their existence. It is often assumed that mixed-morphology (MM) SNRs evolve in very dense environments, and that their centre-filled X-ray morphology is due to interactions between the SNRs and their surroundings. We aim to determine whether MMSNR VRO 42.05.01 is embedded in, and interacting with, a dense molecular environment. We used the IRAM telescope in Pico Veleta, Spain, to search for interaction between the SNR and neighbouring molecular clouds. We observed a region of $26'\times14'$ towards the west of VRO 42.05.01 and a region of $8'\times4'$ towards the north of the remnant in the $^{12}$CO $J=1-0$, $^{13}$CO $J=1-0$, and $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ transitions with the EMIR receiver. We made maps of the properties of the observed molecular clouds (peak temperatures, central velocities, velocity dispersions), column density along the line of sight, and ratio of the $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ to $^{12}$CO $J=1-0$ transitions. We analyse archival optical, infrared, and radio spectroscopic data for other hints on the nature of the medium. We do not find conclusive physical proof that the SNR is interacting with the few, clumpy molecular clouds that surround it in the region of our observations, although there is some suggestion of such interaction (in a region outside our map) from infrared emission. There is a velocity gradient in one of the molecular clouds that is consistent with a stellar wind blown by a $12-14$ $M_{\odot}$ progenitor star. We reassess the literature distance to VRO 42.05.01, and propose that it has a local standard of rest velocity of $-6$ km s$^{-1}$, and that it is located $1.0\pm0.4$ kpc away (the earlier distance value was $4.5\pm1.5$ kpc). We find that a dust sheet intersects VRO 42.05.01 and is possibly related to its double shell-shaped morphology.

AI-Skin : Skin Disease Recognition based on Self-learning and Wide Data Collection through a Closed Loop Framework

There are a lot of hidden dangers in the change of human skin conditions, such as the sunburn caused by long-time exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which not only has aesthetic impact causing psychological depression and lack of self-confidence, but also may even be life-threatening due to skin canceration. Current skin disease researches adopt the auto-classification system for improving the accuracy rate of skin disease classification. However, the excessive dependence on the image sample database is unable to provide individualized diagnosis service for different population groups. To overcome this problem, a medical AI framework based on data width evolution and self-learning is put forward in this paper to provide skin disease medical service meeting the requirement of real time, extendibility and individualization. First, the wide collection of data in the close-loop information flow of user and remote medical data center is discussed. Next, a data set filter algorithm based on information entropy is given, to lighten the load of edge node and meanwhile improve the learning ability of remote cloud analysis model. In addition, the framework provides an external algorithm load module, which can be compatible with the application requirements according to the model selected. Three kinds of deep learning model, i.e. LeNet-5, AlexNet and VGG16, are loaded and compared, which have verified the universality of the algorithm load module. The experiment platform for the proposed real-time, individualized and extensible skin disease recognition system is built. And the system's computation and communication delay under the interaction scenario between tester and remote data center are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the system we put forward is reliable and effective.

Molecular Gas of the Most Massive Spiral Galaxies I: a Case Study of NGC 5908

We present IRAM 30m observations of molecular lines of CO and its isotopologues from the massive spiral galaxy NGC 5908 selected from the CGM-MASS sample. $^{12}$CO $J=1-0$, $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$, and $^{13}$CO $J=1-0$ lines have been detected in most of the positions along the galactic disk. The total molecular gas mass of NGC 5908 is $\sim7\times10^9\rm~M_\odot$ and the total cool gas mass adding atomic hydrogen is $\sim1.3\times10^{10}\rm~M_\odot$, comparable to the upper limit of the mass of the X-ray emitting hot gas in the halo. Modeling the rotation curves constructed with all three CO lines indicates that NGC 5908 has a dark matter halo mass of $M_{\rm vir}\sim10^{13}\rm~M_{\rm \odot}$, putting it among the most massive isolated spiral galaxies. The $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO $J=1-0$, $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$/$J=1-0$ line ratios and the estimated molecular gas temperature all indicate normal but non-negligible star formation in this fairly gas-rich massive isolated spiral galaxy, consistent with the measured star formation intensity and surface densities. The galaxy is probably at an early evolutionary stage after a fast growth stage with mergers and/or starbursts, with plenty of leftover cool gas, relatively high SFR, low hot CGM cooling rate, and low X-ray emissivity.

Non-equilibrium ionization in mixed-morphology supernova remnants

The mixed morphology class of supernova remnants (MMSNRs) comprises a substantial fraction of observed remnants and yet there is as yet no consensus on their origin. A clue to their nature is the presence of regions that show X-ray evidence of recombining plasmas. Recent calculations of remnant evolution in a cloudy interstellar medium (ISM) that included thermal conduction but not non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) showed promise in explaining observed surface brightness distributions but could not determine if recombining plasmas were present. In this paper, we present numerical hydrodynamical models of MMSNRs in 2D and 3D including explicit calculation of NEI effects. Both the spatial ionization distribution and temperature-density diagrams show that recombination occurs inside the simulated MMSNR, and that both adiabatic expansion and thermal conduction cause recombination, albeit in different regions. Features created by the adiabatic expansion stand out in the spatial and temperature-density diagrams, but thermal conduction also plays a role. Thus thermal conduction and adiabatic expansion both contribute significantly to the cooling of high-temperature gas. Realistic observational data are simulated with both spatial and spectral input from various regions. We also discuss the possibility of analyzing the sources of recombination and dominant hydrodynamical processes in observations using temperature-density diagrams and spatial maps.

JCMT Mapping of CO(3-2) in the Circumnuclear Region of M31

We present a survey of CO(3-2) molecular line emission in the circumnuclear region of M31 with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), aiming to explore the physical conditions of the molecular gas. Significant CO(3-2) lines are detected primarily along the so-called nuclear spiral, out to a projected galactocentric radius of 700 pc at a linear resolution of ~50 pc. We find that the velocity field of the molecular gas is in rough agreement with that of the ionized gas previously determined from optical observations. Utilizing existed CO(2-1) and CO(1-0) measurements in selected regions of the nuclear spiral, we derive characteristic intensity ratios of CO(3-2)/CO(2-1) and CO(3-2)/CO(1-0), which are both close to unity and are significantly higher than the typical intensity ratios in the disk. Such line ratios suggest high kinetic temperatures of the gas, which might be due to strong interstellar shocks prevalent in the circumnuclear region.

Observatory science with eXTP

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Developed by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s.

Molecular gas toward supernova remnant Cassiopeia A

We mapped 12CO J=1-0, 12CO J=2-1, 13CO J=1-0, and 13CO J=2-1 lines toward supernova remnant (SNR) Cassiopeia A with the IRAM 30m telescope. The molecular clouds (MCs) along the line of sight of Cas A do not show optically thin, shock-broadened 12CO lines ($ΔV \le 7$ km s$^{-1}$ toward Cas A), or high-temperature features from shock heating ($T_k \le 22$ K toward Cas A). Therefore, we suggest that there is no physical evidence to support that the SNR is impacting the molecular gas. All the detected MCs are likely in front of Cas A, as implied by the HCO+ absorption line detected in the same velocity ranges. These MCs contribute H$_2$ column densities of $5\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, $5\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, and $2\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the west, south, and center of the SNR, respectively. The 20 K warm gas at $V_{LSR}\sim -47$ km s$^{-1}$ is distributed along a large-scale molecular ridge in the south of Cas A. Part of the gas is projected onto Cas A, providing a foreground H$_2$ mass of $\sim 200 (d/3 kpc)^2$ Msun, consistent with the mass of cold dust (15--20 K; 2--4 Msun) found in front of the SNR. We suggest that the 20 K warm gas is heated by background cosmic rays with an ionization rate of $ζ({\rm H_2})\sim 2\times 10^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$. The cosmic rays or X-ray emission from Cas A are excluded as the heating sources of the clouds.

G7.7-3.7: a young supernova remnant probably associated with the guest star in 386 CE (SN 386)

Although the Galactic supernova rate is about 2 per century, only few supernova remnants are associated with historical records. There are a few ancient Chinese records of "guest stars" that are probably sightings of supernovae for which the associated supernova remnant is not established. Here we present an X-ray study of the supernova remnant G7.7-3.7, as observed by XMM-Newton, and discuss its probable association with the guest star of 386 CE. This guest star occurred in the ancient Chinese asterism Nan-Dou, which is part of Sagittarius. The X-ray morphology of G7.7-3.7 shows an arc-like feature in the SNR south, which is characterized by an under-ionized plasma with sub-solar abundances, a temperature of 0.4--0.8 keV, and a density of $\sim 0.5(d/4 kpc)^{-0.5}$ cm$^{-3}$. A small shock age of $1.2\pm 0.6 (d/4 kpc)^{0.5}$ kyr is inferred from the low ionization timescale of $2.4^{+1.1}_{-1.3}\times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$ s of the X-ray arc. The low foreground absorption ($N_H=3.5\pm0.5\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) of G7.7-3.7 made the supernova explosion visible to the naked eyes on the Earth. The position of G7.7-3.7 is consistent with the event of 386 CE, and the X-ray properties suggest that also its age is consistent. Interestingly, the association between G7.7-3.7 and guest star 386 would suggest the supernova to be a low-luminosity supernova, in order to explain the not very long visibility (2--4 months) of the guest star.

Spatially resolved broad-band synchrotron emission from the non-thermal limbs of SN1006

We present ~400ks NuSTAR observations of the northeast (NE) and southwest (SW) non-thermal limbs of the Galactic SNR SN1006. We discovered three sources with X-ray emission detected at >50keV. Two of them are identified as background AGN. We extract the NuSTAR spectra from a few regions along the non-thermal limbs and jointly analyze them with the XMM-Newton spectra and the radio data. The broad-band radio/X-ray spectra can be well described with a synchrotron emission model from a single population of CR electrons with a power law energy distribution and an exponential cutoff. The power law index of the electron particle distribution function (PDF) is ~1.88-1.95 for both the NE and SW limbs, and we do not find significant evidence for a variation of this index at different energy (curvature). There are significant spatial variations of the synchrotron emission parameters. The highest energy electrons are accelerated in regions with the lowest expansion velocity, which is opposite to what has been found in the Tycho's SNR. In addition to a gradual steepening of synchrotron emission from the center of the non-thermal limbs to larger azimuthal angles, we also find that both the emission spectrum and the PDF are significantly flatter in three regions in the SW limb where the shock encounters higher density ambient medium. The NE limb also shows significantly higher cutoff energy in the PDF than the SW limb. By comparing with the roughly symmetric TeV emission and largely asymmetric GeV emission from the two non-thermal limbs, we conclude that the asymmetry in the ambient medium and magnetic fields may have largely modified the acceleration and emission of CR leptons.

An Investigation of the Interstellar Environment of Supernova Remnant CTB 87

We present a new millimeter CO-line observation towards supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 87, which was regarded purely as a pulsar wind nebula (PWN), and an optical investigation of a coincident surrounding superbubble. The CO observation shows that the SNR delineated by the radio emission is projectively covered by a molecular cloud (MC) complex at V$_{\rm {LSR}}$ = $-60$ to $-54$ km s$^{-1}$. Both the symmetric axis of the radio emission and the trailing X-ray PWN appear projectively to be along a gap between two molecular gas patches at $-58$ to $-57$ km s$^{-1}$. Asymmetric broad profiles of $^{12}$CO lines peaked at $-58$ km s$^{-1}$ are found at the eastern and southwestern edges of the radio emission. This represents a kinematic signature consistent with an SNR-MC interaction. We also find that a superbubble, $\sim 37'$ in radius, appears to surround the SNR from HI 21cm (V$_{\rm {LSR}} \sim -61$ to $-68$ km s$^{-1}$), WISE mid-IR, and optical extinction data. We build a multi-band photometric stellar sample of stars within the superbubble region and find 82 OB star candidates. The likely peak distance in the stars' distribution seems consistent with the distance previously suggested for CTB 87. We suggest the arc-like radio emission is mainly the relic of the part of blastwave that propagates into the MC complex and is now in a radiative stage while the other part of blastwave has been expanding into the low-density region in the superbubble. This scenario naturally explains the lack of the X-ray emission related to the ejecta and blastwave. The SNR-MC interaction also favours a hadronic contribution to the γ-ray emission from the CTB 87 region.

Practical aspects of X-ray imaging polarimetry of supernova remnants and other extended sources

The new generation of X-ray polarisation detectors, gas pixel detectors, which will be employed by the future space missions IXPE and eXTP, allows for spatially resolved X-ray polarisation studies. This will be of particular interest for X-ray synchrotron emission from extended sources like young supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae. Here we report on employing a polarisation statistic that can be used to makes maps in the Stokes I, Q, and U parameters, a method that we expand by correcting for the energy-dependent instrumental modulation factor, using optimal weighting of the signal. In order to explore the types of Stokes maps that can be obtained, we present a Monte Carlo simulation program called xpolim, with which different polarisation weighting schemes are explored. We illustrate its use with simulations of polarisation maps of young supernova remnants, after having described the general science case for polarisation studies of supernova remnants, and its connection to magnetic-field turbulence. We use xpolim simulations to show that in general deep, ~2 Ms observations are needed to recover polarisation signals, in particular for Cas A, for which in the polarisation fraction may be as low as 5%.
