Asymmetric Type-Ia supernova origin of W49B as revealed from spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopic study

The origin of the asymmetric supernova remnant (SNR) W49B has been a matter of debate: is it produced by a rare jet-driven core-collapse supernova, or by a normal supernova that is strongly shaped by its dense environment? Aiming to uncover the explosion mechanism and origin of the asymmetric, centrally filled X-ray morphology of W49B, we have performed spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy and a search for potential point sources. We report new candidate point sources inside W49B. The Chandra X-ray spectra from W49B are well-characterized by two-temperature gas components ($\sim 0.27$ keV + 0.6--2.2 keV). The hot component gas shows a large temperature gradient from the northeast to the southwest and is over-ionized in most regions with recombination timescales of 1--$10\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$ s. The Fe element shows strong lateral distribution in the SNR east, while the distribution of Si, S, Ar, Ca is relatively smooth and nearly axially symmetric. Asymmetric Type-Ia explosion of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf well-explains the abundance ratios and metal distribution of W49B, whereas a jet-driven explosion and normal core-collapse models fail to describe the abundance ratios and large masses of iron-group elements. A model based on a multi-spot ignition of the white dwarf can explain the observed high $M_{\rm Mn}/M_{\rm Cr}$ value (0.8--2.2). The bar-like morphology is mainly due to a density enhancement in the center, given the good spatial correlation between gas density and X-ray brightness. The recombination ages and the Sedov age consistently suggest a revised SNR age of 5--6 kyr. This study suggests that despite the presence of candidate point sources projected within the boundary of this SNR, W49B is likely a Type-Ia SNR, which suggests that Type-Ia supernovae can also result in mixed-morphology SNRs.

A Study of Fermi-LAT GeV gamma-ray Emission towards the Magnetar-harboring Supernova Remnant Kesteven 73 and Its Molecular Environment

We report our independent GeV gamma-ray study of the young shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 73 which harbors a central magnetar, and CO-line millimeter observations toward the SNR. Using 7.6 years of Fermi-LAT observation data, we detected an extended gamma-ray source ("source A") with the centroid on the west of the SNR, with a significance of 21.6 sigma in 0.1-300 GeV and an error circle of 5.4 arcminute in angular radius. The gamma-ray spectrum cannot be reproduced by a pure leptonic emission or a pure emission from the magnetar, and thus a hadronic emission component is needed. The CO-line observations reveal a molecular cloud (MC) at V_LSR~90 km/s, which demonstrates morphological correspondence with the western boundary of the SNR brightened in multiwavelength. The 12CO (J=2-1)/12CO (J=1-0) ratio in the left (blue) wing 85-88 km/s is prominently elevated to ~1.1 along the northwestern boundary, providing kinematic evidence of the SNR-MC interaction. This SNR-MC association yields a kinematic distance 9 kpc to Kes 73. The MC is shown to be capable of accounting for the hadronic gamma-ray emission component. The gamma-ray spectrum can be interpreted with a pure hadronic emission or a magnetar+hadronic hybrid emission. In the case of pure hadronic emission, the spectral index of the protons is 2.4, very similar to that of the radio-emitting electrons, essentially consistent with the diffusive shock acceleration theory. In the case of magnetar+hadronic hybrid emission, a magnetic field decay rate >= 10^36 erg/s is needed to power the magnetar's curvature radiation.

A Circulating Biomarker-based Framework for Diagnosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Clinically Relevant Model of Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis; An OAD to NASH

Although cirrhosis is a key risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), mounting evidence indicates that in a subset of patients presenting with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), HCC manifests in the absence of cirrhosis. Given the sheer size of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) epidemic, and the dismal prognosis associated with late-stage primary liver cancer, there is an urgent need for HCC surveillance in the NASH patient. In the present study, adult male mice randomized to control diet or a fast food diet (FFD) were followed for up to 14 mo and serum level of a panel of HCC-relevant biomarkers was compared with liver biopsies at 3 and 14 mo. Both NAFLD Activity Score (NAS) and hepatic hydroxyproline content were elevated at 3 and 14 mo on FFD. Picrosirius red staining of liver sections revealed a filigree pattern of fibrillar collagen deposition with no cirrhosis at 14 mo on FFD. Nevertheless, 46% of animals bore one or more tumors on their livers confirmed as HCC in hematoxylin-eosin-stained liver sections. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves analysis for serum levels of the HCC biomarkers osteopontin (OPN), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) returned concordance-statistic/area under ROC curve of > 0.89. These data suggest that serum levels of OPN (threshold, 218 ng/mL; sensitivity, 82%; specificity, 86%), AFP (136 ng/mL; 91%; 97%) and DKK1 (2.4 ng/mL; 82%; 81%) are diagnostic for HCC in a clinically relevant model of NASH

3xmm j181923.7$-$170616: an x-ray binary with a 408s pulsar

We carry out a dedicated study of 3XMM J181923.7$-$170616\ with an approximate pulsation period of 400~s using the XMM-Newton and Swift observations spanning across nine years. We have refined the period of the source to 407.904(7) s (at epoch MJD 57142) and determined a period derivative limit of $\dot{P}{\leq} 5.9\pm 5.4\times 10^{-9} s s^{-1}$ ($1σ$). The source radiates hard, persistent X-ray emission during the observation epochs, which is best described by an absorbed \powerlaw\ model ($Γ\sim 0.2$--0.8) plus faint Fe lines at 6.4 keV and 6.7 keV. The X-ray flux revealed a variation within a factor of 2, along with a spectral hardening as the flux increased. The pulse shape is sinusoid-like and the spectral properties of different phases do not present significant variation. The absorption N$_H$ $\sim 1.3\times 10^{22} cm^{-2}$ is similar to the total Galactic hydrogen column density along the direction, indicating that it is a distant source. A search for the counterpart in optical and near-infrared surveys reveals a low mass K-type giant, while the existence of a Galactic OB supergiant is excluded. A symbiotic X-ray binary is the favored nature of 3XMM J181923.7$-$170616 and can essentially explain the low luminosity of ${2.78\times 10^{34} d_{10}^{2} erg s^{-1}}$, slow pulsation, hard X-ray spectrum, and possible K3~III companion. An alternative explanation of the source is a persistent Be/X-ray binary with a companion star no earlier than B3-type.

Ultrafast doublon dynamics in photo-excited 1T-TaS$_2$

Strongly correlated systems exhibit intriguing properties caused by intertwined microscopic in- teractions that are hard to disentangle in equilibrium. Employing non-equilibrium time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the quasi-two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$, we identify a spectroscopic signature of double occupied sites (doublons) that are reflects fundamental Mott physics. Doublon-hole recombination is estimated to occur on time scales of one electronic hopping cycle $\hbar/J\approx$ 14 fs. Despite strong electron-phonon coupling the dynamics can be explained by purely electronic effects captured by the single band Hubbard model, where thermalization is fast in the small-gap regime. Qualitative agreement with the experimental results however requires the assumption of an intrinsic hole-doping. The sensitivity of the doublon dynamics on the doping level provides a way to control ultrafast processes in such strongly correlated materials.

Pentaquarks in semileptonic $Λ_b$ decays

In terms of ${\cal P}_{c1,c2}={\cal P}_c(4380,4450)^+$ as the hidden charm pentaquark states to consist of $c\bar c uud$, we study the semileptonic $Λ_b\to ({\cal P}_{c1,c2}\to)J/ψp \ell^-\bar ν_\ell$ decays. In our discussion, while the main contribution to $Λ_b\to K^-J/ψp$ is from the non-perturbative process via the doubly charmful $b\to c\bar cs$ transition, we propose that the $Λ_b\to {\cal P}_{c1,c2}\to J/ψp$ transitions are partly contribute to the $Λ_b\to K^-({\cal P}_{c1,c2}\to)J/ψp$ decays, in which the required $c\bar c$ pair is formed by the sea quarks, intrinsic charm, or both. We predict that ${\cal B}(Λ_b\to J/ψp \ell^-\bar ν_\ell)=(2.04^{+4.82}_{-1.57},1.75^{+4.14}_{-1.35})\times 10^{-6}$ for $\ell=(e,μ)$, which are about two orders of magnitude smaller than the observed decay of $Λ_b\to pμ\bar ν_μ$. We also explore the angular correlations for the $J/ψp$ and $\ell^-\bar ν_\ell$ pairs. Our results of the decay branching ratios and angular asymmetries in $Λ_b\to J/ψp \ell^-\bar ν_\ell$, accessible to the ongoing experiments at the LHCb, can be used to improve the understanding of the hidden charm pentaquark states.

Global and Local Information Based Deep Network for Skin Lesion Segmentation

With a large influx of dermoscopy images and a growing shortage of dermatologists, automatic dermoscopic image analysis plays an essential role in skin cancer diagnosis. In this paper, a new deep fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) is proposed to automatically segment melanoma out of skin images by end-to-end learning with only pixels and labels as inputs. Our proposed FCNN is capable of using both local and global information to segment melanoma by adopting skipping layers. The public benchmark database consisting of 150 validation images, 600 test images and 2000 training images in the melanoma detection challenge 2017 at International Symposium Biomedical Imaging 2017 is used to test the performance of our algorithm. All large size images (for example, $4000\times 6000$ pixels) are reduced to much smaller images with $384\times 384$ pixels (more than 10 times smaller). We got and submitted preliminary results to the challenge without any pre or post processing. The performance of our proposed method could be further improved by data augmentation and by avoiding image size reduction.

Microfocus small-angle X-ray scattering at SSRF BL16B1

Offering high-brilliance X-ray beams on micrometer length scales, the microfocus-SAXS at SSRF BL16B1 was established with a KB mirror system for studying small sample volumes, or probing micro-scopic morphologies. The SAXS minimum q value was 0.1nm-1 with a flux of 1.5 * 10^10 photons/s. Two position-resolved scanning experimental methods were combined with microfocus-SAXS that include STXM and CT. To improve the significant smearing effect in the horizontal direction, an effective and easy-to-use desmearing procedure for two-dimensional SAXS pattern based on the blind deconvolution was developed and the deblurring results demonstrated the good restoration effect for the defocus image. Finally, a bamboo sample was selected for SAXS-CT experiment which illustrated the performance of the microfocus-SAXS method.

Multi-wavelength study of the supernova remnant Kes 79 (G33.6+0.1): On its supernova properties and expansion into a molecular environment

Kes 79 (G33.6+0.1) is an aspherical thermal composite supernova remnant (SNR) observed across the electromagnetic spectrum and showing an unusual highly-structured morphology, in addition to harboring a central compact object (CCO). Using the CO J=1-0, J=2-1, and J=3-2 data, we provide the first direct evidence and new morphological evidence to support the physical interaction between the SNR and the molecular cloud at $V_LSR\sim 105$ km s$^{-1}$. We revisit the 380 ks XMM-Newton observations and perform a dedicated spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopic study with careful background subtraction. The overall X-ray-emitting gas is characterized by an under-ionized ($τ_c \sim 6\times 10^{11}$ cm^${-3}$) cool ($kT_c \approx 0.20$ keV) plasma with solar abundances, plus an under-ionized ($τ_h\sim 8\times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$) hot ($kT_h\approx 0.80$ keV) plasma with elevated Ne, Mg, Si, S and Ar abundances. Kes 79 appears to have a double-hemisphere morphology viewed along the symmetric axis. Projection effect can explain the multiple shell structures and the thermal composite morphology. The X-ray filaments, spatially correlated with the 24 um IR filaments, are suggested to be due to the SNR shock interaction with dense gas, while the halo forms from SNR breaking out into a tenuous medium. The high-velocity, hot ($kT_h\sim 1.4$--1.6 keV) ejecta patch with high metal abundances, together with the non-uniform metal distribution across the SNR, indicating an asymmetric SN explosion of Kes 79. We refine the Sedov age to 4.4--6.7 kyr and the mean shock velocity to 730 km s$^{-1}$. Our multi-wavelength study suggests a progenitor mass of $\sim 15$--20 solar masses for the core-collapse explosion that formed Kes 79 and its CCO, PSR J1852+0040.

Renal Parenchymal Area and Kidney Collagen Content

The extent of renal scarring in chronic kidney disease (CKD) can only be ascertained by highly invasive, painful and sometimes risky tissue biopsy. Interestingly, CKD-related abnormalities in kidney size can often be visualized using ultrasound. Nevertheless, not only does the ellipsoid formula used today underestimate true renal size but also the relation governing renal size and collagen content remains unclear. We used coronal kidney sections from healthy mice and mice with renal disease to develop a new technique for estimating the renal parenchymal area. While treating the kidney as an ellipse with the major axis the polar distance, this technique involves extending the minor axis into the renal pelvis. The calculated renal parenchymal area is remarkably similar to the measured area. Biochemically determined kidney collagen content revealed a strong and positive correlation with the calculated renal parenchymal area. The extent of renal scarring, i.e. kidney collagen content, can now be computed by making just two renal axial measurements which can easily be accomplished via noninvasive imaging of this organ.

Saliency Detection for Improving Object Proposals

Object proposals greatly benefit object detection task in recent state-of-the-art works. However, the existing object proposals usually have low localization accuracy at high intersection over union threshold. To address it, we apply saliency detection to each bounding box to improve their quality in this paper. We first present a geodesic saliency detection method in contour, which is designed to find closed contours. Then, we apply it to each candidate box with multi-sizes, and refined boxes can be easily produced in the obtained saliency maps which are further used to calculate saliency scores for proposal ranking. Experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 test dataset demonstrate the proposed refinement approach can greatly improve existing models.

Expanding molecular bubble surrounding Tycho's supernova remnant (SN 1572) observed with IRAM 30 m telescope: evidence for a single-degenerate progenitor

Whether the progenitors of SNe Ia are single-degenerate or double-degenerate white dwarf (WD) systems is a highly debated topic. To address the origin of the Type Ia Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR), SN 1572, we have carried out a $^{12}$CO J=2-1 mapping and a 3-mm line survey toward the remnant using the IRAM 30 m telescope. We show that Tycho is surrounded by a clumpy molecular bubble at a local standard of rest velocity of $\sim 61$ km s$^{-1}$ which expands at a speed of $\sim 4.5$ km s$^{-1}$ and has a mass of $\sim 220$ M$_\odot$ (at the distance of 2.5 kpc). Enhanced $^{12}$CO J=2-1 line emission relative to $^{12}$CO J=1-0 emission and possible line broadenings (in velocity range $-64$ to $-60$ km s$^{-1}$) are found at the northeastern boundary of the SNR, where the shell is deformed and decelerated. These features, combined with the morphological correspondence between the expanding molecular bubble and Tycho, suggest that the SNR is associated with the bubble at the velocity range $-66$ to $-57$ km s$^{-1}$. The most plausible origin for the expanding bubble is the fast outflow (with velocity of hundreds km s$^{-1}$) driven from the vicinity of a WD as it accreted matter from a nondegenerate companion star. The SNR has been expanding in the low-density wind-blown bubble, and the shock wave has just reached the molecular cavity wall. The SNR has been expanding in the low-density wind-blown bubble, and the shock wave has just reached the molecular cavity wall. This is the first unambiguous detection of an expanding bubble driven by the progenitor of a Type-Ia SNR, which constitutes evidence for a single-degenerate progenitor for this SN Ia.

Construction of a Pragmatic Base Line for Journal Classifications and Maps Based on Aggregated Journal-Journal Citation Relations

A number of journal classification systems have been developed in bibliometrics since the launch of the Citation Indices by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) in the 1960s. These systems are used to normalize citation counts with respect to field-specific citation patterns. The best known system is the so-called "Web-of-Science Subject Categories" (WCs). In other systems papers are classified by algorithmic solutions. Using the Journal Citation Reports 2014 of the Science Citation Index and the Social Science Citation Index (n of journals = 11,149), we examine options for developing a new system based on journal classifications into subject categories using aggregated journal-journal citation data. Combining routines in VOSviewer and Pajek, a tree-like classification is developed. At each level one can generate a map of science for all the journals subsumed under a category. Nine major fields are distinguished at the top level. Further decomposition of the social sciences is pursued for the sake of example with a focus on journals in information science (LIS) and science studies (STS). The new classification system improves on alternative options by avoiding the problem of randomness in each run that has made algorithmic solutions hitherto irreproducible. Limitations of the new system are discussed (e.g. the classification of multi-disciplinary journals). The system's usefulness for field-normalization in bibliometrics should be explored in future studies.

Discovery of X-ray Emission from the Galactic Supernova Remnant G32.8-0.1 with Suzaku

We present the first dedicated X-ray study of the supernova remnant (SNR) G32.8-0.1 (Kes 78) with Suzaku. X-ray emission from the whole SNR shell has been detected for the first time. The X-ray morphology is well correlated with the emission from the radio shell, while anti-correlated with the molecular cloud found in the SNR field. The X-ray spectrum shows not only conventional low-temperature (kT ~ 0.6 keV) thermal emission in a non-equilibrium ionization state, but also a very high temperature (kT ~ 3.4 keV) component with a very low ionization timescale (~ 2.7e9 cm^{-3}s), or a hard non-thermal component with a photon index Gamma~2.3. The average density of the low-temperature plasma is rather low, of the order of 10^{-3}--10^{-2} cm^{-3}, implying that this SNR is expanding into a low-density cavity. We discuss the X-ray emission of the SNR, also detected in TeV with H.E.S.S., together with multi-wavelength studies of the remnant and other gamma-ray emitting SNRs, such as W28 and RCW 86. Analysis of a time-variable source, 2XMM J185114.3-000004, found in the northern part of the SNR, is also reported for the first time. Rapid time variability and a heavily absorbed hard X-ray spectrum suggest that this source could be a new supergiant fast X-ray transient.

Charged Higgs Pair Production at the LHC as a Probe of the Top-Seesaw Assisted Technicolor Models

The top-seesaw assisted technicolor (TC) model, which was proposed recently to explain the 126 GeV Higgs mass discovered by the Large Hadron Colliders (LHC), predicts light and heavy charged Higgs bosons in addition to the neutral Higgses. In this paper we will study the pair productions of the charged Higgs, proceeding through gluon-gluon fusion and quark-anti-quark annihilation, at the LHC in the frame of the top-seesaw assisted TC model. We find that in a large part of parameter space the production cross sections of the light charged Higgs pair at the LHC can be quite large compared with the low standard model backgrounds, while it is impossible for the pair production of the heavy ones to be detected with the strong final mass suppression. Therefore, at the LHC future experiments, the light charged Higgs pair production may be served as a probe of this new TC model.

The Metal-enriched Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant Kesteven 41 (G337.8-0.1) in a Molecular Environment

The physical nature of thermal composite supernova remnants (SNRs) remains controversial. We have revisited the archival XMM-Newton and Chandra data of the thermal composite SNR Kesteven 41 (Kes 41 or G337.8-0.1) and performed a millimeter observation toward this source in the $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O lines. The X-ray emission, mainly concentrated toward the southwestern part of the SNR, is characterized by distinct S and Ar He-like lines in the spectra. The X-ray spectra can be fitted with an absorbed nonequilibrium ionization collisional plasma model at a temperature of 1.3-2.6 keV and an ionization timescale of 0.1-1.2$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$ s. The metal species S and Ar are overabundant, with 1.2-2.7 and 1.3-3.8 solar abundances, respectively, which strongly indicate the presence of a substantial ejecta component in the X-ray-emitting plasma of this SNR. Kes 41 is found to be associated with a giant molecular cloud (MC) at a systemic local standard of rest velocity of -50 km s$^{-1}$ and confined in a cavity delineated by a northern molecular shell, a western concave MC that features a discernible shell, and an HI cloud seen toward the southeast of the SNR. The birth of the SNR in a preexisting molecular cavity implies a mass of $\gtrsim$18 M$_{\odot}$ for the progenitor if it was not in a binary system. Thermal conduction and cloudlet evaporation seem to be feasible mechanisms to interpret the X-ray thermal composite morphology, and the scenario of gas reheating by the shock reflected from the cavity wall is quantitatively consistent with the observations. An updated list of thermal composite SNRs is also presented in this paper.

Interaction Between Supernova Remnant G22.7-0.2 And The Ambient Molecular Clouds

We have carried out 12CO (J=1-0 and 2-1), 13CO (J=1-0), and C18O (J=1-0) observations in the direction of the supernova remnant (SNR) G22.7-0.2. A filamentary molecular gas structure, which is likely part of a larger molecular complex with VLSR~75-79 km/s, is detected and is found to surround the southern boundary of the remnant. In particular, the high-velocity wing (77-110 km/s) in the 12CO (J=1-0 and J=2-1) emission shows convincing evidence of the interaction between SNR G22.7-0.2 and the 75-79 km/s molecular clouds (MCs). Spectra with redshifted profiles, a signature of shocked molecular gas, are seen in the southeastern boundary of the remnant. The association between the remnant and the 77 km/s MCs places the remnant at the near distance of 4.0-4.8 kpc, which agrees with a location on the Scutum-Crux arm. We suggest that SNR G22.7-0.2, SNR W41, and HII region G022.760-0.485 are at the same distance and are associated with GMC G23.0-0.4.

An XMM-Newton study of the mixed-morphology supernova remnant W28 (G6.4-0.1)

We have performed an XMM-Newton imaging and spectroscopic study of supernova remnant (SNR) W28, a prototype mixed-morphology or thermal composite SNR, believed to be interacting with a molecular cloud. The observed hot X-ray emitting plasma is characterized by low metal abundances, showing no evidence of ejecta. The X-rays arising from the deformed northeast shell consist of a thermal component with a temperature of $\sim0.3$ keV plus a hard component of either thermal (temperature $\sim 0.6$ keV) or non-thermal (photon index $=0.9$-2.4) origin. The X-ray emission in the SNR interior is blobby and the corresponding spectra are best described as the emission from a cold ($kT\sim0.4$ keV) plasma in non-equilibrium ionization with an ionization timescale of $\sim4.3\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$ s plus a hot ($kT \sim 0.8$ keV) gas in collisional ionization equilibrium. Applying the two-temperature model to the smaller central regions, we find non-uniform interstellar absorption, temperature and density distribution, which indicates that the remnant is evolving in a non-uniform environment with denser material in the east and north. The cloudlet evaporation mechanism can essentially explain the properties of the X-ray emission in the center and thermal conduction may also play a role for length scales comparable to the remnant radius. A recombining plasma model with an electron temperature of $\sim 0.6$ keV is also feasible for describing the hot central gas with the recombination age of the gas estimated at $\sim2.9\times 10^4$ yr.
