Ultralow Threshold, Single-Mode InGaAs/GaAs Multi-Quantum Disk Nanowire Lasers

We present single-mode nanowire (NW) lasers with ultralow threshold in the near-infrared spectral range. To ensure the single-mode operation, the NW diameter and length are reduced specifically to minimize the longitudinal and transverse modes of the NW cavity. Increased optical losses and reduced gain volume by the dimension reduction are compensated by excellent NW morphology and InGaAs/GaAs multi-quantum disks. At 5 K, a threshold low as 1.6 μJ/cm2 per pulse is achieved with a resulting quality factor exceeding 6400. By further passivating the NW with an AlGaAs shell to suppress surface non-radiative recombination, single-mode lasing operation is obtained with a threshold of only 48 μJ/cm2 per pulse at room temperature with a high characteristic temperature of 223 K and power output of ~ 0.9 μW. These single-mode, ultralow threshold, high power output NW lasers are promising for the development of near-infrared nanoscale coherent light sources for integrated photonic circuits, sensing, and spectroscopy.

JUNO Physics and Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detector at 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino mass ordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can be measured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos. With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of the proton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching for p->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solar metallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. A core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300) all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can be detected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design of the JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have been tested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCP PMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of 27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of 1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$ in simulations. The underwater electronics is designed to have a loss rate <0.5% in 6 years. With degassing membranes and a micro-bubble system, the radon concentration in the 35-kton water pool could be lowered to <10 mBq/m^3. Acrylic panels of radiopurity <0.5 ppt U/Th are produced. The 20-kton LS will be purified onsite. Singles in the fiducial volume can be controlled to ~10 Hz. The JUNO experiment also features a double calorimeter system with 25,600 3-inch PMTs, a LS testing facility OSIRIS, and a near detector TAO.

The Design and Sensitivity of JUNO's scintillator radiopurity pre-detector OSIRIS

The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator fillling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $10^{-16}$ g/g of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th requires a large ($\sim$20 m$^3$) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Rate-Diverse Gaussian Multiple Access: Efficient Encoder and Decoder Designs

In this work, we develop a pair of rate-diverse encoder and decoder for a two-user Gaussian multiple access channel (GMAC). The proposed scheme enables the users to transmit with the same codeword length but different coding rates under diverse user channel conditions. First, we propose the row-combining (RC) method and row-extending (RE) method to design practical low-density parity-check (LDPC) channel codes for rate-diverse GMAC. Second, we develop an iterative rate-diverse joint user messages decoding (RDJD) algorithm for GMAC, where all user messages are decoded with a single parity-check matrix. In contrast to the conventional network-coded multiple access (NCMA) and compute-forward multiple access (CFMA) schemes that first recover a linear combination of the transmitted codewords and then decode both user messages, this work can decode both the user messages simultaneously. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis and simulation results indicate that RDJD can achieve gains up to 1.0 dB over NCMA and CFMA in the two-user GMAC. In particular, we show that there exists an optimal rate allocation for the two users to achieve the best decoding performance given the channel conditions and sum rate.

Unraveling Ultrafast Photoionization in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

The non-linear response of dielectrics to intense, ultrashort electric fields has been a sustained topic of interest for decades with one of its most important applications being femtosecond laser micro/nano-machining. More recently, renewed interests in strong field physics of solids were raised with the advent of mid-infrared femtosecond laser pulses, such as high-order harmonic generation, optical-field-induced currents, etc. All these processes are underpinned by photoionization (PI), namely the electron transfer from the valence to the conduction bands, on a time scale too short for phononic motion to be of relevance. Here, in hexagonal boron nitride, we reveal that the bandgap can be finely manipulated by femtosecond laser pulses as a function of field polarization direction with respect to the lattice, in addition to the field's intensity. It is the modification of bandgap that enables the ultrafast PI processes to take place in dielectrics. We further demonstrate the validity of the Keldysh theory in describing PI in dielectrics in the few TW/cm2 regime.

Calibration Strategy of the JUNO Experiment

We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Design and Performance Analysis of a New STBC-MIMO LoRa System

LoRa is a modulation technology for low power wide area networks (LPWAN) with enormous potential in 5G era. However, the performance of LoRa system deteriorates seriously in fading-channel environments. To tackle this problem, in this paper we introduce multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) configuration employing space-time block coding (STBC) schemes into the LoRa system to formulate an STBC-MIMO LoRa system. Then, we investigate the theoretical performance of the proposed system over Rayleigh fading channels. To this end, we derive the distribution of the decision metric for the demodulator in the proposed system. Based on the above distribution, we propose the closed-form approximated bit error rate (BER) expression of the proposed system when perfect and imperfect channel information states (CSIs) are considered. In addition, we analyze the diversity order of the proposed system. The result demonstrates that the diversity order of the system in the imperfect CSI scenario with fixed channel estimate error variance is zero. However, in the imperfect CSI scenario with a decreasing channel estimate error variance and the perfect CSI scenario, the system can achieve full diversity. Finally, experimental results verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the excellent performance of the proposed system. Due to such superiority, the proposed STBC-MIMO LoRa system can be considered as a good scheme for LPWAN.

Feasibility and physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos at JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory~(JUNO) features a 20~kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent experiment for $^8$B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, its high energy resolution compared to water Cherenkov detectors, and its much large target mass compared to previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2~MeV threshold on the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable assuming the intrinsic radioactive background $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10$^{-17}$~g/g. With ten years of data taking, about 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the tension between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. If $Δm^{2}_{21}=4.8\times10^{-5}~(7.5\times10^{-5})$~eV$^{2}$, JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at the about 3$σ$~(2$σ$) level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moveover, JUNO can simultaneously measure $Δm^2_{21}$ using $^8$B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20\% or better depending on the central value and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos. A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help elucidate the current tension between the value of $Δm^2_{21}$ reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment.

TAO Conceptual Design Report: A Precision Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum with Sub-percent Energy Resolution

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.

Design of an MISO-SWIPT-Aided Code-Index Modulated Multi-Carrier M-DCSK System for e-Health IoT

Code index modulated multi-carrier M-ary differential chaos shift keying (CIM-MC-M-DCSK) system not only inherits low-power and low-complexity advantages of the conventional DCSK system, but also significantly increases the transmission rate. This feature is of particular importance to Internet of Things (IoT) with trillions of low-cost devices. In particular, for e-health IoT applications, an efficient transmission scheme is designed to solve the challenge of the limited battery capacity for numerous user equipments served by one base station. In this paper, a new multiple-input-single-output simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (MISO-SWIPT) scheme for CIM-MC-M-DCSK system is proposed by utilizing orthogonal characteristic of chaotic signals with different initial values. The proposed system adopts power splitting mode, which is very promising for simultaneously providing energy and transmitting information of the user equipments without any external power supply. In particular, the new system can achieve desirable anti-multipath-fading capability without using channel estimator. Moreover, the analytical bit-error-rate expression of the proposed system is derived over multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of the proposed system are analyzed. Simulation results not only validate the analytical expressions, but also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed system.

Physical-Layer Network Coding: An Efficient Technique for Wireless Communications

As a subfield of network coding, physical-layer network coding (PNC) can effectively enhance the throughput of wireless networks by mapping superimposed signals at receiver to other forms of user messages. Over the past twenty years, PNC has received significant research attention and has been widely studied in various communication scenarios, e.g., two-way relay communications (TWRC), nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in 5G networks, random access networks, etc. To ensure network reliability, channel-coded PNC is proposed and related communication techniques are investigated, such as the design of channel code, low-complexity decoding, and cross-layer design. In this article, we briefly review the variants of channel-coded PNC wireless communications with the aim of inspiring future research activities in this area. We also put forth open research problems along with a few selected research directions under PNC-aided frameworks.

Design of Protograph Codes for Additive White Symmetric Alpha-Stable Noise Channels

The protograph low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes possess many attractive properties, such as the low encoding/decoding complexity and better error floor performance, and hence have been successfully applied to different types of communication and data storage channels. In this paper,we design protograph LDPC codes for communication systems corrupted by the impulsive noise, which are modeled as additive white symmetric alpha-stable noise (AWSaSN) channels. We start by presenting a novel simulation-based protograph extrinsic information transfer (P-EXIT) analysis to derive the iterative decoding threshold of the protograph codes. By further applying the asymptotic weight distribution (AWD) analysis, we design new protograph codes for the AWSaSN channel. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protograph codes can provide better error rate performance than the prior art AR4JA code, the irregular codes optimized for the AWGN channel, as well as the irregular codes optimized for the AWSaSN channel.

Imaging non-local electron transport via local excess noise

Noise is usually a hindrance to signal detection. As stressed by Landauer, however, noise can be an invaluable signal that reveals kinetics of charge particles. Understanding local non-equilibrium electron kinetics at nano-scale is of decisive importance for the development of miniaturized electronic devices, optical nano-devices, and heat management devices. In non-equilibrium conditions electrons cause current fluctuation (excess noise) that contains fingerprint-like information about the electron kinetics. A crucial challenge is hence a local detection of excess noise and its real-space mapping. However, the challenge has not been tackled in existing noise measurements because the noise studied was the spatially integrated one. Here we report the experiment in which the excess noise at ultra-high-frequency(21.3THz), generated on GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) devices with a nano-scale constriction, is locally detected and mapped for the first time. We use a sharp tungsten tip as a movable, contact-free and noninvasive probe of the local noise, and achieved nano-scale spatial resolution (~50nm). Local profile of electron heating and hot-electron kinetics at nano-scales are thereby visualized for the first time, disclosing remarkable non-local nature of the transport, stemming from the velocity overshoot and the intervalley hot electron transfer. While we demonstrate the usefulness of our experimental method by applying to mesoscopic conductors, we emphasize that the method is applicable to a variety of different materials beyond the conductor, and term our instrument a scanning noise microscope (SNoiM):In general non-equilibrium current fluctuations are generated in any materials including dielectrics, metals and molecular systems. The fluctuations, in turn, excite fluctuating electric and magnetic evanescent fields on the material surface, which can be detected and imaged by our SNoiM.

Performance Analysis of Protograph-based LDPC Codes with Spatial Diversity

In wireless communications, spatial diversity techniques, such as space-time block code (STBC) and single-input multiple-output (SIMO), are employed to strengthen the robustness of the transmitted signal against channel fading. This paper studies the performance of protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with receive antenna diversity. We first propose a modified version of the protograph extrinsic information transfer (PEXIT) algorithm and use it for deriving the threshold of the protograph codes in a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system. We then calculate the decoding threshold and simulate the bit error rate (BER) of two protograph codes (accumulate-repeat-by-3-accumulate (AR3A) code and accumulate-repeat-by-4-jagged-accumulate (AR4JA) code), a regular (3, 6) LDPC code and two optimized irregular LDPC codes. The results reveal that the irregular codes achieve the best error performance in the low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) region and the AR3A code outperforms all other codes in the high-SNR region. Utilizing the theoretical analyses and the simulated results, we further discuss the effect of the diversity order on the performance of the protograph codes. Accordingly, the AR3A code stands out as a good candidate for wireless communication systems with multiple receive antennas.
