Clifford Algebra of Nonrelativistic Phase Space and the Concept of Mass

Prompted by a recent demonstration that the structure of a single quark-lepton generation may be understood via a Dirac-like linearization of the form p^2+x^2, we analyze the corresponding Clifford algebra in some detail. After classifying all elements of this algebra according to their U(1) x SU(3) and SU(2) transformation properties, we identify the element which might be associated with the concept of lepton mass. This element is then transformed into a corresponding element for a single coloured quark. It is shown that - although none of the three thus obtained individual quark mass elements is rotationally invariant - the rotational invariance of the quark mass term is restored when the sum over quark colours is performed.

The Harari-Shupe preon model and nonrelativistic quantum phase space

We propose that the whole algebraic structure of the Harari-Shupe rishon model originates via a Dirac-like linearization of quadratic form x^2+p^2, with position and momentum satisfying standard commutation relations. The scheme does not invoke the concept of preons as spin-1/2 subparticles, thus evading the problem of preon confinement, while fully explaining all symmetries emboded in the Harari-Shupe model. Furthermore, the concept of quark colour is naturally linked to the ordering of rishons. Our scheme leads to group U(1)xSU(3) combined with SU(2), with two of the SU(2) generators not commuting with reflections. An interpretation of intra-generation quark-lepton transformations in terms of genuine rotations and reflections in phase space is proposed.

Dispersive contribution to CP violation in hyperon decays

Within the standard model, CP-violating asymmetries A(Λ^0_-) and A(Ξ^-_-) have been estimated in short-distance calculations to occur at the level of a few times 10^{-5}. We show here that in this model the dispersive contribution tends to give asymmetries of similar size.

Nonleptonic charmed meson decays: Quark diagrams and final-state interactions

Effects of final-state interactions in nonleptonic decays of charmed mesons are studied in the framework of quark-diagram approach. For the case of u-d-s flavour symmetry we discuss how the inelastic coupled-channel rescattering effects (and, in particular, resonance formation in the final state) modify the input quark-diagram weak amplitudes. It is shown that such inelastic effects lead to the appearance of nonzero relative phases between various quark diagrams, thus invalidating some of the conclusions drawn in the past within the diagrammatical approach. The case of SU(3) symmetry-breaking in Cabibbo once-forbidden $D^0$ decays is also studied in some detail.

The puzzle of the quark model: Weak radiative hyperon decays

Weak radiative hyperon decays present us with a long-standing puzzle, namely the question of validity of a hadron-level theorem proved by Hara. We briefly discuss the conflict between expectations based on Hara's theorem and experiment as well as the way in which the quark model evades the theorem. Violation of Hara's theorem in the quark model is traced back to the issue of hadron compositeness and the nonequivalence of standard ways of imposing gauge-invariance condition at quark and hadron levels. This suggests that our understanding of nonlocal composite nature of hadrons may require some important change.
