The transmission problem in linear isotropic elasticity

We study the isotropic elastic wave equation in a bounded domain with boundary with coefficients having jumps at a nested set of interfaces satisfying the natural transmission conditions there. We analyze in detail the microlocal behavior of such solution like reflection, transmission and mode conversion of S and P waves, evanescent modes, Rayleigh and Stoneley waves. In particular, we recover Knott's equations in this setting. We show that knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map determines uniquely the speed of the P and the S waves if there is a strictly convex foliation with respect to them, under an additional condition of lack of full internal reflection of some of the waves.

Inverse problems for real principal type operators

We consider inverse boundary value problems for general real principal type differential operators. The first results state that the Cauchy data set uniquely determines the scattering relation of the operator and bicharacteristic ray transforms of lower order coefficients. We also give two different boundary determination methods for general operators, and prove global uniqueness results for determining coefficients in nonlinear real principal type equations. The article presents a unified approach for treating inverse boundary problems for transport and wave equations, and highlights the role of propagation of singularities in the solution of related inverse problems.

The Light Ray transform on Lorentzian manifolds

We study the weighted light ray transform $L$ of integrating functions on a Lorentzian manifold over lightlike geodesics. We analyze $L$ as a Fourier Integral Operator and show that if there are no conjugate points, one can recover the spacelike singularities of a function $f$ from its the weighted light ray transform $Lf$ by a suitable filtered back-projection.

A sharp stability estimate for the geodesic ray transform

We prove a sharp $L^2\to H^{1/2}$ stability estimate for the geodesic X-ray transform of tensor fields of order $0$, $1$ and $2$ on a simple Riemannian manifold with a suitable chosen $H^{1/2}$ norm. We show that such an estimate holds for a family of such $H^{1/2}$ norms, not topologically equivalent, but equivalent on the range of the transform. The reason for this is that the geodesic X-ray transform has a microlocally structured range.

Semiclassical sampling and discretization of certain linear inverse problems

We study sampling of Fourier Integral Operators $A$ at rates $sh$ with $s$ fixed and $h$ a small parameter. We show that the Nyquist sampling limit of $Af$ and $f$ are related by the canonical relation of $A$ using semiclassical analysis. We apply this analysis to the Radon transform in the parallel and the fan-beam coordinates. We explain and illustrate the optimal sampling rates for $Af$, the aliasing artifacts, and the effect of averaging (blurring) the data $Af$. We prove a Weyl type of estimate on the minimal number of sampling points to recover $f$ stably in terms of the volume of its semiclassical wave front set.

A Borg-Levinson theorem for magnetic Schrödinger operators on a Riemannian manifold

This article is concerned with uniqueness and stability issues for the inverse spectral problem of recovering the magnetic field and the electric potential in a Riemannian manifold from some asymptotic knowledge of the boundary spectral data of the corresponding Schrödinger operator under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The spectral data consist of some asymptotic knowledge of a subset of eigenvalues and Neumann traces of the associated eigenfunctions of the magnetic Laplacian. We also address the same question for Schrödinger operators under Neumann boundary conditions, in which case we measure the Dirichlet traces of eigenfunctions. In our results we characterize the uniqueness of the magnetic field from a rate of growth of the eigenvalues, combined with suitable asymptotic properties of boundary observation of eigenfunctions, of the associated magnetic Schrödinger operator. To our best knowledge this is the first result proving uniqueness from such general asymptotic behavior of boundary spectral data.

The attenuated geodesic X-ray transform

This article deals with stability issues related to geodesic X-ray transforms, where an interplay between the (attenuation type) weight in the transform and the underlying geometry strongly impact whether the problem is stable or unstable. In the unstable case, we also explain what types of artifacts are expected in terms of the underlying conjugate points and the microlocal weights at those points. We show in particular that the well-known iterative reconstruction Landweber algorithm cannot provide accurate reconstruction when the problem is unstable, though the artifacts generated, specific for the reconstruction algorithm, can be properly described.

The Inverse Problem for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on Lorentzian manifolds

We consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Λ$ on a cylinder-like Lorentzian manifold related to the wave equation related to the metric $g$, a magnetic field $A$ and a potential $q$. We show that we can recover the jet of $g,A,q$ on the boundary from $Λ$ up to a gauge transformation in a stable way. We also show that $Λ$ recovers the following three invariants in a stable way: the lens relation of $g$, and the light ray transforms of $A$ and $q$. Moreover, $Λ$ is an FIO away from the diagonal with a canonical relation given by the lens relation. We present applications for recovery of $A$ and $q$ in a logarithmically stable way in the Minkowski case, and uniqueness with partial data.

Thermo and photoacoustic Tomography with variable speed and planar detectors

We analyze the mathematical model of multiwave tomography with a variable speed with integrating measurements on planes tangent to a sphere surrounding the source. We prove sharp uniqueness and stability estimates with full and partial data and propose a time reversal algorithm which recovers the visible singularities.

Multiwave tomography with reflectors: Landweber's iteration

We use the Landweber method for numerical simulations for the multiwave tomography problem with a reflecting boundary and compare it with the averaged time reversal method. We also analyze the rate of convergence and the dependence on the step size for the Landweber iterations on a Hilbert space.

Boundary rigidity with partial data

We study the boundary rigidity problem with partial data consisting of determining locally the Riemannian metric of a Riemannian manifold with boundary from the distance function measured at pairs of points near a fixed point on the boundary. We show that one can recover uniquely and in a stable way a conformal factor near a strictly convex point where we have the information. In particular, this implies that we can determine locally the isotropic sound speed of a medium by measuring the travel times of waves joining points close to a convex point on the boundary. The local results lead to a global lens rigidity uniqueness and stability result assuming that the manifold is foliated by strictly convex hypersurfaces.

On the stable recovery of a metric from the hyperbolic DN map with incomplete data

We show that given two hyperbolic Dirichlet to Neumann maps associated to two Riemannian metrics of a Riemannian manifold with boundary which coincide near the boundary are close then the lens data of the two metrics is the same. As a consequence, we prove uniqueness of recovery a conformal factor (sound speed) locally under some conditions on the latter.

Multiwave tomography in a closed domain: averaged sharp time reversal

We study the mathematical model of multiwave tomography including thermo and photoacoustic tomography with a variable speed for a fixed time interval $[0,T]$. We assume that the waves reflect from the boundary of the domain. We propose an averaged sharp time reversal algorithm. In case of measurements on the whole boundary, we give an explicit solution in terms of a Neumann series expansion. When the measurements are taken on a part of the boundary, we show that the same algorithm produces a parametrix.

Inverting the local geodesic X-ray transform on tensors

We prove the local invertibility, up to potential fields, and stability of the geodesic X-ray transform on tensor fields of order 1 and 2 near a strictly convex boundary point, on manifolds with boundary of dimension n>=3. We also present an inversion formula. Under the condition that the manifold can be foliated with a continuous family of strictly convex surfaces, we prove a global result which also implies a lens rigidity result near such a metric. The class of manifolds satisfying the foliation condition includes manifolds with no focal points, and does not exclude existence of conjugate points.
