Modulated Luminescent Tomography

We propose and analyze a mathematical model of Modulated Luminescent Tomography. We show that when single X-rays or focused X-rays are used as an excitation, the problem is similar to the inversion of weighted X-ray transforms. In particular, we give an explicit inversion in the case of Dual Cone X-ray excitation.

The geodesic ray transform on Riemannian surfaces with conjugate points

We study the geodesic X-ray transform $X$ on compact Riemannian surfaces with conjugate points. Regardless of the type of the conjugate points, we show that we cannot recover the singularities and therefore, this transform is always unstable (ill-posed). We describe the microlocal kernel of $X$ and relate it to the conjugate locus. We present numerical examples illustrating the cancellation of singularities. We also show that the attenuated X-ray transform is well posed if the attenuation is positive and there are no more than two conjugate points along each geodesic; but still ill-posed, if there are three or more conjugate points. Those results follow from our analysis of the weighted X-ray transform.

Stability of Coupled-Physics Inverse Problems with internal measurements

In this paper, we develop a general approach to prove stability for the non linear second step of hybrid inverse problems. We work with general functionals of the form $σ|\nabla u|^p$, $0 < p \leq 1$, where $u$ is the solution of the elliptic partial differential equation $\nabla\cdot σ\nabla u =0$ on a bounded domain $Ω$ with boundary conditions $u|_{\partial Ω} = f$. We prove stability of the linearization and Hölder conditional stability for the non-linear problem of recovering $σ$ from the internal measurement.

Is a curved flight path in SAR better than a straight one?

In the plane, we study the transform $R_γf$ of integrating a unknown function $f$ over circles centered at a given curve $γ$. This is a simplified model of SAR, when the radar is not directed but has other applications, like thermoacoustic tomography, for example. We study the problem of recovering the wave front set $\WF(f)$. If the visible singularities of $f$ hit $γ$ once, we show that the "artifacts" cannot be resolved. If $γ$ is a closed curve, we show that this is still true. On the other hand, if $f$ is known a priori to have singularities in a compact set, then we show that one can recover $\WF(f)$, and moreover, this can be done in a simple explicit way, using backpropagation for the wave equation.

Stability for the multi-dimensional Borg-Levinson theorem with partial spectral data

We prove a stability estimate related to the multi-dimensional Borg-Levinson theorem of determining a potential from spectral data: the Dirichlet eigenvalues and the normal derivatives of the eigenfunctions on the boundary of a bounded domain. The estimate is of Hölder type, and we allow finitely many eigenvalues and normal derivatives to be unknown. We also show that if the spectral data is known asymptotically only, up to $O(k^{-a})$ with $a>>1$, then we still have Hölder stability.

The Identification Problem for the attenuated X-ray transform

We study the problem of recovery both the attenuation $a$ and the source $f$ in the attenuated X-ray transform in the plane. We study the linearization as well. It turns out that there are natural Hamiltonian flow that determines which singularities we can recover. If the perturbations $δa$, $δf$ are supported in a compact set that is non-trapping for that flow, then the problem is well posed. Otherwise, it may not be, and least in the case of radial $a$, $f$, it is not. We present uniqueness and non-uniqueness results for both the linearized and the non-linear problem; as well as a Hölder stability estimate.

Recovery of a source term or a speed with one measurement and applications

We study the problem of recovery the source $a(t,x)F(x)$ in the wave equation in anisotropic medium with $a$ known so that $a(0,x)\not=0$ with a single measurement. We use Carleman estimates combined with geometric arguments and give sharp conditions for uniqueness. We also study the non-linear problem of recovery the sound speed in the equation $u_{tt} -c^2(x)Δu =0$ with one measurement. We give sharp conditions for stability, as well. An application to thermoacoustic tomography is also presented.

A New Numerical Algorithm for Thermoacoustic and Photoacoustic Tomography with Variable Sound Speed

We present a new algorithm for reconstructing an unknown source in Thermoacoustic and Photoacoustic Tomography based on the recent advances in understanding the theoretical nature of the problem. We work with variable sound speeds that might be also discontinuous across some surface. The latter problem arises in brain imaging. The new algorithm is based on an explicit formula in the form of a Neumann series. We present numerical examples with non-trapping, trapping and piecewise smooth speeds, as well as examples with data on a part of the boundary. These numerical examples demonstrate the robust performance of the new algorithm.

Thermoacoustic tomography arising in brain imaging

We study the mathematical model of thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography when the sound speed has a jump across a smooth surface. This models the change of the sound speed in the skull when trying to image the human brain. We derive an explicit inversion formula in the form of a convergent Neumann series under the assumptions that all singularities from the support of the source reach the boundary.

The geodesic X-ray transform with fold caustics

We give a detailed microlocal study of X-ray transforms over geodesics-like families of curves with conjugate points of fold type. We show that the normal operator is the sum of a pseudodifferential operator and a Fourier integral operator. We compute the principal symbol of both operators and the canonical relation associated to the Fourier integral operator. In two dimensions, for the geodesic transform, we show that there is always a cancellation of singularities to some order, and we give an example where that order is infinite; therefore the normal operator is not microlocally invertible in that case. In the case of three dimensions or higher if the canonical relation is a local canonical graph we show microlocal invertibility of the normal operator. Several examples are also studied.

Thermoacoustic tomography with variable sound speed

We study the mathematical model of thermoacoustic tomography in media with a variable speed for a fixed time interval, greater than the diameter of the domain. In case of measurements on the whole boundary, we give an explicit solution in terms of a Neumann series expansion. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for uniqueness and stability when the measurements are taken on a part of the boundary.

The weighted doppler transform

We consider the tomography problem of recovering a covector field on a simple Riemannian manifold based on its weighted Doppler transformation over a family of curves $Γ$. This is a generalization of the attenuated Doppler transform. Uniqueness is proven for a generic set of weights and families of curves under a condition on the weight function. This condition is satisfied in particular if the weight function is never zero, and its derivatives along the curves in $Γ$ is never zero.

Uniqueness and Non-uniqueness in inverse radiative transfer

We characterize the non-uniqueness in the inverse problem for the stationary transport model, in which the absorption "a" and the scattering coefficient "k" are to be recovered from the albedo operator. We show that "gauge equivalent" pairs (a,k) yield the same albedo operator, and that we can recover uniquely the class of gauge equivalent pairs. We apply this result to show unique determination of the media when the absorption "a" depends on the line of travel through each point while scattering "k" obeys a symmetry property. Previously known results concerned directional independent absorption.

Linearizing non-linear inverse problems and an application to inverse backscattering

We propose an abstract approach to prove local uniqueness and conditional Hölder stability to non-linear inverse problems by linearization. The main condition is that, in addition to the injectivity of the linearization $A$, we need a stability estimate for $A$ as well. That condition is satisfied in particular, if $A^*A$ is an elliptic pseudo-differential operator. We apply this scheme to show uniqueness and Hölder stability for the inverse backscattering problem for the acoustic equation near a constant sound speed.
